File 16: November Rain
When the last customer had finally left, Lorne came back over to where Krycek was sitting quietly. “Are you ready?”
Wordlessly, he nodded and headed towards the stage. He punched a number into the box. Before the music started, he turned to Lorne. “Don’t tell anyone that I did this.”
“Your secret’s safe with me.”
“This romeo is bleeding
But you can't see his blood
It's nothing but some feelings
That this old dog kicked up
It's been raining since you left me
Now I'm drowning in the flood
You see I've always been a fighter
But without you I give up
Now I can't sing a love song
Like the way it's meant to be
Well, I guess I'm not that good anymore
But baby, that's just me
And I will love you, baby - Always
And I'll be there forever and a day - Always
I'll be there till the stars don't shine
Till the heavens burst and
The words don't rhyme
And I know when I die, you'll be on my mind
And I'll love you - Always
Now your pictures that you left behind
Are just memories of a different life
Some that made us laugh, some that made us cry
One that made you have to say goodbye
What I'd give to run my fingers through your hair
To touch your lips, to hold you near
When you say your prayers try to understand
I've made mistakes, I'm just a man
When he holds you close, when he pulls you near
When he says the words you've been needing to hear
I'll wish I was him 'cause those words are mine
To say to you till the end of time
Yeah, I will love you baby - Always
And I'll be there forever and a day - Always
If you told me to cry for you
I could
If you told me to die for you
I would
Take a look at my face
There's no price I won't pay
To say these words to you
Well, there ain't no luck
In these loaded dice
But baby if you give me just one more try
We can pack up our old dreams
And our old lives
We'll find a place where the sun still shines
And I will love you, baby - Always
And I'll be there forever and a day - Always
I'll be there till the stars don't shine
Till the heavens burst and
The words don't rhyme
And I know when I die, you'll be on my mind
And I'll love you – Always”
Lorne walked up to him at the end of the song, shaking his head. “Boy, do you ever have issues. Even Angel seems pretty normal in comparison. Love your voice though. You wouldn’t be willing to give up your present life to do that professionally, would you?”
“No.”
“I guess it was too much to hope for.” He sighed. “Alright. My advice? Go for it. I’ve seen your intentions. I don’t recommend tying her up again, though. She won’t ever forgive me, but you can tell her I said so. You’re both lonely souls that somehow seem to belong together.”
“Has she ever done this?”
“A couple times. Mostly she doesn’t like to sing, though. Try using that voice of yours. She likes to listen to music. She finds it relaxing.”
“I can’t just walk up to her and start singing. That just sounds bizarre.”
“You’d be guaranteed to get her attention,” Lorne teased. “No, seriously though. Get alone and into some kind of close contact with her. A hug, a shoulder rub, whatever. Your call there. Don’t be too obvious about the singing. Just quietly. When she starts to relax, then go for it.”
“I have it on good authority that I should wait a while before seeing her.”
“That’s sound advice. I know my Riley girl pretty well.”
“Have you seen her recently?”
“Since the time you tried to hit on her here? Yes. She was in here before the place opened. Didn’t say much. Just sang.”
“What did she sing?” he asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
“It wasn’t familiar to me at first, but she told me it was called ‘Field of Innocence’. Pretty little song. Ironic, too.”
“How so?”
“The line I remember the best from it is Where has my heart gone/ Trapped in the eyes of a stranger/ I want to go back to/ Believing in everything. When she sang it, I kept seeing these eyes that I now realize are yours.” Lorne leaned forward conspiratorially. “There’s a picture of you stuck in her head and it’s driving her nuts. Don’t ask me what it looks like. She’ll have to tell you that herself.”
“Now, about getting her in a neutral place.”
“Ah, right. I’ll be right back.” Lorne went behind the bar and got a sheet of paper and a pen. He scribbled something on it and came back, handing it to Krycek. “This is a place she likes to hang out at when she needs to be completely alone to think. It’s supposed to be a secret. I saw it in her head once when she was singing, so there’s no way that she’ll connect you being there with me telling you. She doesn’t know that I know about it.”
Krycek looked at the paper. “Seems easy enough to get to. Thanks for all your help.”
“Anytime. I hope this works out. More for her sake than for yours, but I know her better. She needs a friend.”
“She has Fred.”
“Not that kind of friend. She needs someone she can share things with, someone she can go to for comfort. You know what I mean?”
“I got it. Right. I’m off. I’ve got things to do.”
Lorne sat down in a chair until long after Krycek had left. He hoped that he’d done the right thing in interfering in Riley’s life.
Wayside Motel
Three days later
7:48 pm
Krycek sat on the couch in his motel room, listening to the rain. It had rained since he’d left Caritas three days ago, preventing him from going to Riley’s secret place. He clearly recalled telling himself the night before that, if it rained today, he’d go crazy. Sure enough, it had started to rain just after lunch time. He had tried to stay calm in the hopes that it would clear up, but now, six hours later, it was still pouring rain.
He stood and walked over to the window to look at the sheets of water streaming down. It was miserable weather. He didn’t mind so much because it matched his mood. He was tired of being stuck in his motel room. He slammed his fist on the glass and turned around to go and get his gun and jacket and put his shoes on.
This has gone on long enough. I’m going to go see her no matter what. If it means going to her apartment, then so be it. I can’t take this any more.
Riley’s Spot
9:29 pm
It had taken him a little while to get there and make it undetected, but he was there and that was all he really cared about. The place Lorne had directed him to was the roof of an tall building in the city center. The building held some kind of business. He hadn’t paid any attention to the sign on the front, so he didn’t know what it was, nor was it terribly important to him. What was important to him was standing in front of him, leaning on a fragile-looking wrought iron railing that was all that was keeping her from plummeting to a very messy death on the street below.
It had been a few days since he’d last seen her, but he was still wary of approaching her. Though it was pouring rain, he was content so simply stand in the shadows and watch her, grateful that she was here instead of sitting in her apartment and keeping out of the rain.
Riley was wearing her long black trench coat. Beneath it, he could make out her heeled boots but nothing else. Like as not, the outfit she wore under the jacket was similar to the one she’d worn three days ago when he’d captured her. He knew without having to see it that she had her sword. Through small breaks in the clouds, scattered rays of moonlight could be seen. One of them reflected off her shoulder length blond hair, giving it silver highlights. It was a strange effect, but one he found himself enjoying.
Taking a deep breath, Krycek stepped out of the shadows and headed towards her, deciding that it was now or never. He had to take the chance that she wouldn’t skewer him on sight.
“I was wondering when you were going to come out where I could see you,” she said without turning to look at him.
He paused a few feet away from her. “You knew I was there?”
“l could hear you breathing.”
“I wasn’t aware that I was breathing that loudly.”
“You weren’t. I just have good hearing. I herd something that wasn’t the rain. I admit, it took me a minute or two to figure out what it was.” She paused. “What do you want, Krycek?”
“Not going to ask how I found you here?”
“I’m not so interested in the how as the why right now. Otherwise, I would have asked.”
“I wanted to see you.”
She laughed. “You wanted to see me. I don’t particularly want to see you, though.”
He took a step forward. “That’s what I hear. All I want is a few minutes to figure something out.”
“What would that be?”
He came forward another couple steps. “I want to know if this rumor I heard two days ago about something called the ‘Hunter’s Moon’ is real and not just a fairy tale.”
She jumped, spinning around. In the dim light he could see her grey eyes flash angrily. “How do you know about that?”
He shrugged. “Like I said; rumors. How true is it? Or is my source just pulling my leg in hopes that I’ll try and press my luck?”
“What do you know about it?”
“I know it messes with your head, making you physically stronger except in regards to men, that you can’t resist if pressed.”
“Crude, but accurate.” She turned away from him. “This doesn’t really improve your chances, though. You do realize this, right?”
“My chances of you accepting me, perhaps.”
“That sounds like a threat.”
“It’s not; it’s an observation. Relax, Riley. I have no intention of doing anything to you.”
“You’ll pardon me if I don’t act all relieved about that.”
“I thought it would help you.”
“Well, it didn’t,” she snapped. “Your being here alone isn’t helping, so how can anything you say or do help me feel better?”
He walked up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders. “What can I do? Don’t tell me to go away. Not just yet. Anything else.” As she spoke, he gently rubbed her shoulders. It was hard work to get through the tough leather of her jacket, but judging by the reaction she gave, he was getting through.
Her shoulders slumped forward. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
“What does it feel like I’m doing?” He stopped. “Do you want me to stop?”
“Damn you,” she whispered, breaking free of his grip and moving away. “Why can’t you just leave me alone? Is it too much to ask to be left in peace?”
“I need to get things straightened out with you first. If I’m going to leave L.A without you, my employers will have me killed. Are you worth it? Is your freedom worth loosing my life?”
“Why are you asking me? I don’t value my own life. It sounds harsh, but we’re lucky to live long enough to see our daughters grow up. Most of us die young. It’s an occupational hazard. Never ask us to place a value on our lives. It’s our job that’s the most important. The very idea of you giving up your life for mine is ludicrous.”
“So what am I supposed to do here?” he asked, tiredly. “I refuse to take you to them against your will, but if I don’t, I’m a dead man.”
“It’s your life. You decide.”
“You’re not being very helpful here.”
“You asked me a question. I answered it. What more do you want from me?”
“I was hoping for a little more…emotion. It looks like my expectations were too high. I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Every second you linger here, you cause me pain,” she said, wrapping her arms around her shoulders in a protective gesture.
“Riley,“ he started, but stopped, unsure of what to say in response to that. He walked up to her, stopping just shy of being able to put his hands on her. It took all of his willpower not to. The rain pelted down on them even harder than before, all traces of moonlight vanishing. The only illumination was provided by the city around them.
“Why can’t you just leave me alone? Why must you torment me like this?”
“Torment?”
“If you aren’t going to leave me alone, why won’t you come here?” Her eyes took on a pained look. “Why won’t you hold me?”
“You won’t run me through?” he asked, placing his hands on her shoulders.
Riley stepped into his arms and cupped his face in her hands, kissing him. Shock warred with desire as Krycek returned the kiss. A small portion of his mind compared it to the last few times they’d kissed. The first one had just been friendly compared to the second and the second had nothing on this one. He’d thought she’d been serious that time, but it paled in comparison.
Echoing her insistence, he wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her in right up against him. As the rain poured down around them, their hands explored each others faces and upper bodies and their lips told the other the things they couldn’t have said out loud. Krycek could hardly believe what was happening. He had to pull back and look down at her to be sure he wasn’t dreaming. He cupped her face in his hands, stroking her rain slicked cheeks.
“I don’t know about you, but the rain isn’t helping things. Can we go someplace dryer?”
She laughed quietly. “Sure. My car isn’t far from here.”
He took her hands into his. “Are you really sure about this?”
“I’ll explain when we’re warm and dry again.”
That was good enough for him. Hand in hand, they walked down the stairwell to the parking garage where she’d parked her car. The drive back to her place wasn’t long. She knew a shortcut that would keep them out of the worst of the traffic. Along the way, her stereo provided a soothing background noise. When she pulled into her parking space at her apartment building, he noted that the doorman was no where in sight. Looking at her, he saw a little bit of relief. So she wasn’t completely comfortable with him or with people knowing he was with her. It hardly mattered at the moment.
She was silent as they rode the elevator up to her floor, but her closeness to him, her small hand in his larger on was all he needed. It felt so good just to touch her without fear. She let him in to her apartment and stepped inside herself, taking off her wet jacket and hanging it on a peg on the wall over a heat vent. She unbuckled her sword belt and hung it back in its hidden spot.
“Hand me your jacket. I’ll dry it with mine.” Krycek pealed the wet leather jacket off and handed it to her. She hung it up and stepped up to him, scrutinizing his soaked clothing. “You’d best take those off, too.”
“That’s an odd way to put it.”
She snorted. “Don’t be an idiot. If you sit around in them much longer, you could get sick and where would that leave me?”
“Good point.”
“I think I might have something you can wear in the meantime. Come with me.”
