"Is everything ok?" The auburn haired woman's head shot up, startled from her thoughts, not having noticed the taller man that was standing adjacent to her, though noticeably not as close as he normally stood.
"Um…what?" Audrey wasn't sure if she understood what the question was completely. What was ok? Was she ok? Were they ok?
"With Nicki?" Sam clarified with a concerned, curious look on his face.
"Oh, no, it wasn't Nicki. It was just this guy I knew from college. I didn't get it in time. He didn't leave a message, so it must not have been important," she said, fidgeting with the cluster of pearls that dangled from her ear and finding her silver shoes utterly mesmerizing. It was only a little white lie, not even that really, but still she felt horrible for not telling him the full truth. But….he wasn't a part of her life anymore, and perhaps that still hurt just a little, and she didn't want to tell Sam about him. It wasn't important really.
Seeing that he had been left for something unimportant, or perhaps another man, Sam's expression shifted to a mildly crestfallen look. "Oh, ok. It's nice that you still keep in touch with your friends from college. I kind of wish I had kept up with mine." Insert forced smile. "I, uh...should probably go. Dean's got the keys to the car and it's getting kind of late. Good thing the walk back isn't so bad." Sam gave a forced laugh to accompany the smile before he turned and looked like he was all but ready to sprint for the door.
"Sam, wait! Look, I'm sorry I…" Audrey trailed off for a moment, not sure what to say. I'm sorry I shot you down? I'm sorry I made you look like an idiot? What?
Sam gave her a light, sad smile and attempted to save her. "It's ok, Audrey. I shouldn't have tried to….I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
"No, no, it's not that. It's just…..I just can't, Sam," Audrey said, trying very hard to seem cold and indifferent near the end in order to drive him away.
It worked. "Ok, I understand. Well, if Dean stops by, can you tell him I just went back to the motel then? I'll talk to you some other time I guess, see if we can't figure this demon thing out faster," he said almost mechanically.
"Yeah, ok, Sam." She could look at him when she spoke, fearful that she might betray herself when she looked at him or try to stop him again when he went for the door. When the sound of the door closing resonated through the house Audrey let out a breath that she hadn't realized she had been holding. She scrubbed her face with her hand, telling herself that this was the best thing for everybody.
"My, what an unattractive face that is." Audrey looked up as her Aunt graced the entrance of the hallway from the other end. "You really shouldn't make that expression, dear. It's an insult to God and man to have such pretty features make such ugly expression."
"So, you're back. How was the theatre?" Bridget sighed with a bit of a sneer as she whipped off her shawl with a bit of dramatic flair, reveling her vintage maroon evening dress that looked like it had been directly pinched from a 1930's fashion magazine; like all of her clothes. In a conversation with her Aunt about why she didn't wear more modern clothes, she had explained that styles went out of fashion, but fashion never went out of style. It was Bridget's very odd way of explaining everything while explaining nothing.
"Awful. I told Cordeila that the next time we want to see theater we should go somewhere more recognized. I've never seen such an amateur performance," the elder woman replied in a lofty manner as she hung up her silky shawl and smoothed the graying sable hair in its fashionable updo. Bridget always took the time to look her best, no matter the occasion or location.
"Maybe it's because it was amateur theater, Aunt Bridget," Audrey reminded her in a snarky tone, and Bridget smirked over her shoulder at her.
"There is a difference between amateur theater and amateur acting, Audrey, you know that."
Audrey sighed exasperatedly at her Aunt before slumping off the wall she was leaning on to follow her clicking heels and flairing skirt.
"Yes, how could I forget the tedious hours of my childhood spent learning about flatware, the difference between Monet and Manet, playing classical music 'til my fingers almost bled, and of course the very subtle art of insult through compliment?"
"I tried to teach you girls how to be well rounded, sophisticated ladies. I will not apologize for that," Bridget responded as her aged, nimble fingers prepared her tea cup for the whistle of the iron tea kettle on the stove.
"And when you taught us how con people and hex those that were rude?" Audrey questioned, a smirk gracing her lips, her chin sitting perched in the palm of her hand as she leaned against the kitchen island. The older woman flinched slightly in a grimace before replying.
"I taught you two how to manipulate situations and people for your best benefit should the situation arise, and rude people deserve to be supernaturally smacked. Again, I will not apologize for that." She finished with a flick of her hand that one would use to shoo away an annoying insect.
"Normal people don't teach their grand-nieces these things," Audrey reminded.
"And normal people are frightfully boring and horribly inept in what really goes on in the world. Besides, dear, what has ever been normal for us?"
"The strange and unusual?"
"Exactly!" Bridget congratulated, snatching the screeching kettle off the stove. The crisp, soothing scent of peppermint filled the air as the hot liquid blended with the tea leaves. "So, do you want to tell me the real reason you're awake and are standing in this kitchen when I saw that handsome young man walking down the street like a kicked puppy?" Calculating mocha eyes stared at her younger grand-niece over the rim of her cup. Audrey blinked for a moment before straightening and placing her palms of the countertop. Apparently she was taking too long, because Bridget answered for her. "I think it's safe to assume that this has something to do with the rather moody auras I'm getting from the both of you." Audrey looked up at her Aunt with an arched brow. "Don't give me that look. You of all people should know that aura reading is the easiest trick in the book. Not to mention how easy you two are making it to read." She took a sip of her tea. "So, want to tell Auntie Bridget what happened while we were away?"
"Sam and Dean think that the demon that's killed James and the others is after us," Audrey explained, brushing invisible crumbs off the counter and staring at the tile grout like it was the most fascinating thing in the world.
"Hm, well, I suppose it wouldn't be the first time something like this happened," the older woman commented offhandedly before sipping her tea again casually.
"They asked about Mom and Dad." The clatter of china nearly being dropped rang off the walls as Bridget's cup and saucer almost had a tragic mishap with the floor.
"And you told them?" the elder Corbin asked, the epitome of shocked.
"Just Sam. Nicki might have told Dean if he caught her when she took off, but it's not likely. They think it's the same one."
"Well, that explains the anger spike I sensed earlier," Bridget pondered out loud and rolled her eyes under her grand-niece's scrutiny. "I'm psychic, dear. Am I really going to have to remind you every time so you stop looking at me that way?" She sighed and reverted to a look of seriousness before she made another cup of peppermint tea. "So…what happened next?"
"Nothing, we talked some more. Then he…" Audrey trailed off there for a moment and Bridget grinned lecherously.
"Nothing happened. My phone started ringing and I came inside. After that, I made him leave," she said, one arm clutching her elbow while the other dropped to the side, looking as shameful she felt of how she had acted toward him.
"Ah, so that's what that face was about then. Regret."
Audrey scoffed momentarily before turning her back to her great-aunt, to lean against the counter. "I don't regret anything. It's for the best," the younger woman said forcefully.
"And yet you are standing in the kitchen, sulking, with your spinster of an aunt, when you could be happily enthralled with that nice young man who would be more than willing to sweep you off your feet."
"Have you been reading those cheap romance novels again?"
"Don't change the subject, young lady, and my romance novels aren't cheap! Now, my question is, why are you here and not there?"
"You know why." Audrey's tone was mournful. Behind her, Bridget sighed.
"Ah, so we're back to this again. We're going to lock ourselves away in safe, secure bubbles so there's no chance that someone maybe gets hurt."
"It's not a maybe Aunt Bridget," Audrey argued venomously.
"Oh I know it's not a maybe, someone is going to get hurt." The soft click of heels echoed through the kitchen as the older woman stood in front of the younger and lifted her chin to look in her eyes. "It's just not always the one we think sweetie." Audrey opened her mouth a few times to speak, but couldn't find the words to argue with the other woman. The serious sadness in Bridget face and eyes vanished quickly and she stepped back with a wave her hand as it left Audrey's face. "But what do I know? I only did the same thing for eighty plus years, so maybe I don't even know what I'm talking about. Of course, I took your sister's approach more than this hermit one you seem to be enjoying."
"I can't do that." Audrey stated flatly and Bridget rolled her eyes.
"Well, you should at least tell him why you can't. The boy's going to think something's wrong with him." Bridget finished her second cup of tea and rinsed out the china piece before heading for the door to go to bed. "By the way dear, just because you don't admit something is there doesn't make it any less real," the older woman said over her shoulder before exiting the kitchen and heading up stairs.
Audrey stared after her for a moment before furrowing her brow to think. She nodded, coming to a conclusion before she exited the kitchen and walked with purpose down the narrow expanse of hall toward the door
At the top of the stairs the older woman stood with a gleam in her eye and a smile on her lips. "Well then, there might be some hope for them yet."

Sam pulled his brown jacket closer to himself, feeling the air get colder. Or maybe that was just his imagination. He felt stupid for what had happened, but also confused. It was like she was hot one minute and cold the next. She always seemed to be lost in the moment up until her brain remaindered her what she was about to do and seemed almost horrified at the idea. Sam thought that maybe it was because he was a hunter. Yeah, that had to be it. He got the impression that she didn't really do one night stands and the life of a hunter only had that to offer. She probably knew that, when this case was done, he and his brother would pack up and leave, so she didn't want to get to close to him. That was actually a philosophy that Sam used to be fairly good at. Up until now that is…
"Sam!" The younger Winchester brother stopped in the middle of the sidewalk and turned partially around as a slim brunette came running up to him.
"Goddamn, you walk fast," Audrey muttered, trying to catch her breath from the sprint.
"Audrey? What are you doing out here? Did something happen??" Sam asked, becoming concerned as his mind began to spin scenarios that would have her running after him in the middle of the night.
After a quick moment to regain for her composure and toss of dark chestnut hair out of her face, she began to speak. "No, nothing happened. Well, something happened, but not something new, and you were there when that happened." Sam arched a brow at her curiously and Audrey took another breath and put her face in her hand for a moment to collect herself in order to stop her rambling. "I need to explain something to you."
Sam, realizing what she was talking about, tried to cut her off before she could. "Audrey, you don't have to explain anything. I get it."
"No, Sam I-" Audrey got flustered for a moment, hands flying every which way when she talked, then suddenly froze with a slight gasp like something had clicked.
"Audrey?" Sam asked cautiously, seeing a serious, possibly fearful expression pass over her eyes. Her face shifted up to his and she paused for a moment, glancing around.
"Remember that thing you wanted me to find?" Audrey asked quietly.
"Yeah…" Sam's senses went on high alert, looking around everywhere for something out of place, stepping closer to Audrey and draping an arm carefully over her shoulders as if to shield her; pervious awkwardness forgotten, replaced with the need to protect.
"I think I found it." Her eyes locked onto something past Sam's shoulder, and he looked behind him to see the shadowy apparition that they had encountered several nights ago manifest itself in the middle of the street.
"Shit!" Sam hissed under his breath and turned Audrey around as he took off with her down the one of the side streets.
"Didn't you bring your gun or something?" she asked, frantically, as they rounded a corner and almost bounced off a wall.
"Gun or something is back in the Impala," Sam told her, sparing a glance over his shoulder to see if the demon was behind them.
"You left it there?!" the slightly shorter woman screeched.
"I didn't grab it when we got to your house and I didn't think that I'd have to be shooting anything tonight! Where's your gun?!"
"I'm not the hunter here, Sam!"
The running, arguing duo skidded to a halt a few blocks from the Corbin house, panting and trying to catch their breaths. "Think we lost it?" Sam asked, hesitant to stop before reaching the Impala, but this roundabout way was annoying and exhausting.
"I don't know. I'm not sensing anything," Audrey replied, rolling up the long sleeves of her knit top, suddenly very warm from all the running.
"We should head back to your house since its safe there. I'll call Dean. Hopefully he and your sister are ok." Sam walked off in the direction that he thought the house was. He must have been right, since Audrey followed.
"They should be fine. Nicki probably picked it up too and she and, I'm assuming, your brother aren't the type to leave their guns at home." Audrey joked, and smirked at the taller man as she pulled her sleeves back down. Sam seemed to notice and rolled his eyes at her.
"You forget your gun one time and you never hear the end of it," he joked back, happy that the comfortable feeling between them had returned.
The feeling was short lived, however, as he was suddenly thrown to the other side of the small street by an invisible force. "Sam!" Audrey tried to rush over to him, but was thrown to the other side by the same force, banging against a car and crumpling to the ground in a heap.
"Audrey!" Sam tried to scramble to his feet to help her but was held back by the dark clawed hand that was now latched to his throat.
"Can't run from me. Can't hide. I see everything, I know everything. You're gonna be the final piece to end everything." Sam tried to speak out against the dark, sickly spoken words the demon hissed into his ear. He could almost feel the demon smirking beneath the cloak it wore. If it was, it probably didn't last long as the thundering crack of gunfire rang out and bullets pelted the dark creature. The demon turned to sneer at its assailants and Sam went flying again. He ended up on the other side of the street, denting the same car Audrey had, before disappearing.
"Who's awesome? I'm awesome!" The victorious chant of Nicki Corbin, complete with gun-toting fist pump, announced her arrival on the scene.
"Sammy!" Dean holstered his gun and rushed over to his staggering brother's side.
"Oh, right, injured people. Audi, you ok?" Nicki put away her own gun and walked much more calmly to the pair on the ground.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks so much for being concerned." Audrey replied sarcastically, dusting the gravel off her hands as she sat up properly.
"I'm ok, Dean. Really, I'm fine." Sam realized his response would have been much more convincing if he didn't sound so hoarse from the choking or if he didn't hiss painfully when he moved to get up.
"He might have broken something in the attack. If we get him back to the house I can check him up there," Audrey said, going into doctor-mode and quickly examining him superficially. "Where the hell did you two come from anyway?"
"We were a few blocks away, near the park, when Nicki said she felt something," Dean explained, helping his brother onto his feet and giving him a shoulder to lean on should he need it.
"What the hell were you doing in a park in the middle of the night?" Sam asked in curious agitation, shrugging his brother off to show that he could walk for himself but winced as his chest burst with pain.
"Making out furiously in order to attract scary things." The group looked at Nicki in confusion at the completely serious words that came out of her mouth. "What?! It's a proven fact that the big bad always show up when some couple somewhere is making out. It's the laws of science and nature."
"That is the most retarded thing I've ever heard you say," Audrey told her sister angrily.
"And yet, we're all still here. This means I'm right, my plan worked, gold star for me." Nicki gave a bright smile with her hands on her hips. Audrey just shook her head and ushered Sam down the street towards her house.
"So…all that was to attract a demon?" Dean asked when they were out of earshot. Nicki turned to him with a devious smirk.
"Not really. That was just fun for me. Gettin' to shoot the big bad was just a plus. Good times all around." Nicki lightly smacked Dean in the chest before walking off after the other duo. Dean arched a brow at her back, suppressing the urge to shake his head, but returned her smirk before following.
