Liam woke to Dean snuggling him close. He was not dead, still in one piece, and there was no sign that John had been there while they slept. Still, the whole episode really bothered the vampire. Clearly Dean’s father was going to be nowhere near as accepting of this as his brother. “Hey, don’t worry so much,” Dean said as he planted a kiss on Liam’s forehead. “My dad is being an ass, but things will work out, you’ll see. We’ll get you human again, and hopefully he’ll have less of an objection. Right now I really gotta pee, and I need a shower. Holler if you need anything.”
Dean then got up and padded into the bathroom. Liam sighed, thinking about how much of a mess he’d caused. When Dean was talking about his dad earlier it seemed like he practically worshipped the man. Now they were at odds all because of a vampire.
The decision was rash, but Liam got out of bed and dressed before gathering his things and doing the only thing he could think of to make things right. When it was dark enough he left. He didn’t really have a plan for anything as he took off down the road on foot. He just knew he had to remove himself from the situation for Dean’s sake. The way his heart was breaking, and how tired of everything he was, it crossed his mind to go pick a fight with some random hunter so said hunter would kill him. That would finally end it all.
He knew when Dean had gotten out of the shower and discovered him gone. Panic, amongst many other things, came through the bond they shared loud and clear. The added emotion was enough to make the vampire collapse to the ground, a flood of tears bursting forth turning him into a sobbing heap by the road.
Dean was coming after him. The hunter would know which way to go because of the bond. Liam didn’t move as he felt his mate come closer and closer. After a little while he could smell Dean’s scent on the night air. He continued to just sit there bawling his eyes out until Dean approached him, sinking down beside him, and wrapping his arms around him.
Liam leaned into his mate, burying his face into the hunter’s chest. “Why?” came the choked question.
Liam took a deep calming breath and wiped away some of the tears. “Because of your dad. I’m coming between the two of you, and I can’t stand to break up a family. You’re better off without me.”
Dean’s hand reached to run through the vampire’s hair lovingly. “No, I’m not. This is his problem. Why should we be punished because he can’t pull his head out of his ass? Now please, come back with me.”
Liam sniffed and nodded, getting to his feet with Dean. The two of them walked back to the motel in silence. Sam had everything packed and ready to go. John was standing not too far away by his truck. Both men looked at the couple as they approached the Impala. Dean opened the back door motioning for Liam to get in. The vampire did just that, settling himself in the seat. “He was going to do the sensible thing and leave you,” John said with a scowl. “You didn’t let him. I never thought I’d have more respect for a vampire than my own son.”
Dean snorted and glared at his father. “Dad, who I put my hands on is my business, not yours! And when it comes down to it, who I put my dick into is strictly between me and the other person. I just almost lost something very important to me because of you. Right now I don’t wanna look at you. Just go away and do your thing.” With that he tossed the keys to the Impala to Sam and climbed into the backseat with Liam, wrapping his arms around the vampire and snuggling him. “Don’t ever pull that shit on me again.”
Sam only shrugged and got into the driver’s seat, starting up the engine. “We’ll be in Portland in about four hours,” he said as he pulled out onto the road.
Dean stayed close the entire trip. Nothing was said out loud, but volumes were spoken between them through their new bond. Dean’s primary emotion was anger, which made Liam a little uneasy. Whether it was mostly directed at him or John, it shouldn’t have been there.
Liam was very upset over all of it, and Dean did the best he knew how to comfort the vampire. It came in the form of gentle kisses and light touches. The fact that the hunter was trying even though he wasn’t very good at that kind of stuff, it said and meant a lot.
“Here we are, Portland, Oregon,” Sam said as he pulled into the city. “Now we just need to find a crappy motel and get ourselves a room. We are getting just one room because our primary goal here is to plan and get that chalice.”
“No argument here, Sam,” Dean agreed. “I don’t think either of us are in the mood to do anything that would make you uncomfortable right now anyway. Dad kinda soured that when he barged in on us and practically threw a tantrum.”
“Yeah, he was ranting about that when he got to my room,” Sam nodded. “He wanted to know how I could support it. I told him Liam is definitely not your typical vampire, and he makes you happy. That’s reason enough.”
“Thanks, Sammy,” Dean gave a little smile. “I just wish Dad could let himself see things the way you do.”
They pulled into a motel parking lot and Sam got out to go get their room. Dean turned to Liam. “Now that we have some privacy for a few minutes, I said don’t ever pull that shit again, and I meant it. Next time I won’t come after you, got it?”
“I’m sorry,” Liam frowned. “I just-”
Dean put a finger on his mouth to quiet him. “I know what you were trying to do. The fact that you care so much about other people despite being what you are, that’s one of the things I love about you. But do you have any idea how much finding you gone hurt me? Well, I guess you do, but, you get the point I trying to make?”
“Yeah,” Liam nodded. “I won’t do it again.”
“Good.”
Sam came out of the office with the room key and Dean pried himself away from his mate to gather their stuff together. Liam followed them into the room with his bag. Sam set his laptop up on a desk so they could see everything about the museum they were going to rob and discuss the plan. “Liam, pay close attention because we’re going to need your help,” Sam told him.
“My help?” Liam looked surprised. “But I don’t know anything about robbing a museum. Lying to people sure, but this...?”
“This is for you,” Dean said. “We’ll tell you what to do and when, but we really could use a third pair of hands and eyes.”
“Okay,” Liam sighed. “I’ll do what I can.”
Liam listened while they went over what plans they had. It sounded complicated, and everything would have to go perfectly. That made the vampire nervous. They still had to check the place out when the sun came up though. That Liam couldn’t help with. He would have to remain in the room and trust the brothers knew what they were doing.
“Time for bed I think,” Sam said as he started shutting the laptop down. “Dean, you and me are gonna get a couple of hours and then go check everything out.”
Dean nodded and stripped down to his boxers to sleep. Sam did the same. “Can I borrow your laptop?” Liam asked. “I just wanna mess around until I’m tired.”
“Sure, I guess,” Sam shrugged. “Just don’t look up any porn,” he shot a side glance to his brother.
“Wasn’t planning on it,” Liam laughed.
While the brothers went to sleep Liam powered the laptop back up. It was funny, when he was human such a thing like a computer wasn’t even imaginable, and there he was using one. With any luck he would be human again soon. He checked his email that he’d been neglecting, spending quite a bit of time just deleting the junk that had piled up. Once his inbox was empty again he turned to social media. Because he didn’t have much of one, looking at other peoples’ lives was somehow fascinating. He supposed if he did stay with Dean, his new human life would be the job, as theirs was. That was a definite downside to the relationship. He wanted to experience normal things, not constantly being on the lookout for the paranormal.
He shook his head to clear all the negative thoughts. He loved Dean, and that was the important thing. Maybe he could get the guy to indulge him in normal things from time to time. They would discuss it later when they weren’t trying to break into a museum.
When fatigue finally hit him he shut the laptop down and slipped out of everything except his boxers like his two companions had done. Then he climbed into bed trying not to wake Dean in the process. Dean let out a very soft groan and reached out to pull the vampire close, but he didn’t seem to be awake, not fully anyway. Liam happily let himself get pulled in and closed his eyes.
When he woke up Sam and Dean were gone. It seemed they’d managed to get up and leave for the museum without disturbing him. With a sigh Liam got out of bed and dressed in clean clothes. Then he got a bag of blood for himself. Since there really wasn’t much else to do he plopped himself on the bed and turned on the TV. He flipped through the channels until he came across a Jurrasic Park movie marathon.
He was most of the way through the second movie when the brothers returned. “Was your trip fruitful?” he asked, turning the TV off.
“Very,” Dean answered with a smile and moved to kiss Liam. “It’s going to be tricky, but I think we just might be able to pull it off.”
The three of them sat there in the motel room going over the new information and how it all fit into their plan. It sounded like the brothers knew what they were doing, and it was a good solid plan. What made Liam nervous was that they were counting on him to help. He was afraid he would screw something up and get them all tossed in jail. “Everything will be fine,” Dean tried to reassure him, but the hunter didn’t sound all that confident in what he was saying. He was a little nervous too.
At one in the morning they headed out to the museum. This was it. If they failed there was no hope. Liam followed the brothers inside, amazed at their burglary skills. His first job was to knock out two guards without raising suspicion. That happened to be something he was very good at, so he accomplished it without much of a problem.
For the rest of the mission he stayed alert and followed the plan to the letter. A million different emotions were swimming through him when they were back in the car and driving away with the chalice in hand. “I can’t believe we actually did it.”
“Believe it,” Dean gave him a little smirk. “We knew what we were doing.”
“I didn’t, but I had faith in you.”
When they reached the motel again Sam took the chalice and stashed it in a little box in the trunk that had runes all over it. “Will it be safe in there?” Liam asked.
“Oh yeah,” Sam nodded. “See all those runes, they protect anything that’s in there. They’re attuned to me and Dean. If anyone else tries to open that box, well, it won’t be pretty. I don’t suggest you ever try it.”
“Noted,” Liam said as he went to go back into their room. “Are we leaving tonight?”
“As tired as we all are, I think it’s better if he get the hell out of dodge with the stolen merchandise,” Dean said as he put his hand on the door knob to open the door.
They all froze when they saw John standing in the room. “Dad,” Dean sighed. “Why the hell are you following us? I told you I didn’t want you anywhere near us until Liam is human again. Maybe not even then.”
John took two steps toward them. “It doesn’t sit right with me what you’re doing. We used to be a family. Now all of a sudden you’re somehow all goo-goo eyed for a damn vampire and you’re turning your back on me, you’re father!”
“You’re still a family,” Liam spoke up. “He loves you and it hurts him that you’re acting this way. All he wants is a little slice of happiness. You’re trying to take that away from him because I’m something that I can’t help. We’re working to fix that, and we’re close. All you have to do is open your eyes a little.”
“Shut up, leech!” John growled. “I don’t know what you did to him, but I damn sure as hell will fix it.”
“I didn’t do anything to him!”
Dean punched the wall, hissing at the pain and rubbing his injured hand gingerly. “Dad, this is beginning to get really fucking old! I keep telling you he’s a person, but you’re so determined to ignore that I don’t think you’ll ever see it even when he’s human again. You’d rather I keep fucking random chicks and feel empty than be happy with a man.”
“You’re right,” John nodded. “The thought of you being with another man like that, it turns my stomach. What really makes me want to lose my lunch though is that man being a vampire. It’s just not natural. I don’t want that thing near you anymore until it’s human. I’ll leave you two alone to get the rest of the items you need if it comes with me.”
“No way in hell!” Dean shouted. “Knowing you you’ll just wait until I can’t protect him anymore and you’ll shoot him with the Colt.”
“If it comes with me I won’t hurt it,” John promised. “I’m a little curious to see if this spell of yours will work actually.”
Dean sighed and shook his head. “You’ve proven to me that when it comes to him I can’t trust you as far as I can throw you.”
“This is bullshit!” John spat and lost his temper, grabbing Liam by the hair and started smashing his face off the dresser.
Dean and Sam moved to get their father off the vampire when Liam punched John in the face. John stopped to wipe the blood from his lip before kicking Liam’s feet out from under him so he fell to the floor. Then he started mercilessly kicking Liam while the vampire just curled up to try and protect his face.
Dean grabbed a 9mm and pointed it at his father. “Stop it!”
Sam grabbed his father and pulled him away. “Dad, that’s enough!”
“Alright, I’ll go with you!” Liam cried. “As long as you take me back to Memphis.”
Dean clenched his jaw. “I’ve already said that isn’t an option!”
Liam looked up to Sam. “Can you guys give us a moment?”
Sam nodded and pushed his dad toward the door. “Come on, let’s let the lovebirds hash this out.” John seemed pacified for the moment and left without a fuss.
“Are you fucking crazy?” came out of Dean’s mouth as soon as the door was closed. “He’ll kill you and you know it.”
“He might not,” Liam said as he picked himself up off the floor.
“Well that’s not a risk I find worth taking.”
Liam sighed and moved to place both his hands on Dean’s cheeks, gazing into his eyes. “You know he’s not going to leave us alone. He followed us out here because me being near you really gets under his skin. No place is safe. At any time he could waste me with that gun. If we make him happy and separate ourselves like he wants, there’s a better chance he won’t. It’ll only be for a few days.”
Dean closed his eyes and shook his head. “You better make damn sure it’s only for a few days.”
Liam kissed Dean tenderly before going to stick his head out the door. “Give me a few moments,” he said to John before starting to gather his things. He was very nervous about this, but he really didn’t see much of a choice. “I love you,” he said to Dean when he was ready to go. It would have been better to say it in a less upsetting situation, but he wanted to have it said in case something did happen.
“I love you too,” Dean answered him without hesitation. “We’re gonna call Natalie and let her know you’re on your way.”
“You’ll see this is really for the best,” John said as Sam handed him a piece of motel stationary with Natalie’s address on it.
Dean clenched his jaw and looked away. Liam could feel how angry and fearful his mate was, and it hurt him to hurt Dean like this. That was the last thing he wanted to do. With a soft sigh he followed John out to his truck, climbing into the passenger seat. He really hoped he wasn’t signing his own death warrant.
John put the cooler of blood into the back and settled into the driver’s seat. “Take your shirt off,” he ordered.
Liam was scared of what John had in mind, but he did as told. Next thing he knew silver chains were being tied around his arms and torso. He whimpered as the pure metal started burning against his skin. “I don’t want you to be able to try anything,” John said as he fired up the engine and started driving out to the road. “Oh, and one more thing.” Then he took out a knife coated with dead man’s blood and stabbed Liam in the gut with it. When Liam went limp he pulled out onto the road and sped off. “You’re easier to deal with unconscious.”
Dean flung himself out of the motel room door to glare at the black truck speeding away, pain written all over features. “You fucking bastard!” he shouted after his father.
