(Open in the control room of the Excelsior. The Commander stands behind one of the scanning technicians. Tech points to the screen.)
Tech1: They appear to be taking a room in a hotel in Capitol City.
Commander: How far from the Directorate headquarters?
Tech1: About a block.
Commander: A block!? That's crazy! They'll get caught!
Tech1: The Capitol City Exchange soldiers used to say all the giants were sure that the closer you got to SID, the more likely you were under surveillance at all times.
Commander: Of course. Those paranoid bastards would certainly cover their immediate surroundings.
Tech1: But in fact, they found hardly any surveillance within a mile of the building. SID let the fear and paranoia work for them, more than anything else.
Commander: So... They're just going to brazen it out?
Tech1: And get away with it.
Commander: Crane's right. These people are insane.
Tech1: I- (cuts off suddenly)
Commander: What?
Tech1: They disappeared. (taps some keys, looks at smaller screens. Tech2 beside him starts the same behavior)
Commander: From us? Or from the other giants?
Tech1: They got a room, then they disappeared! Gone! The monitor signals are gone, we can't see them on infra red....
Commander: Find them!
Tech1: Looking!
Tech2: Well, the good news has to be, if we don't know where they are, no one does.
Commander: I'll point that out when the Admirals ask for the status.
Tech1: They should appreciate that.
Commander: And I'll mention that to the Marines when they ask where their Major and their Liaison went.
Tech1: Oh. No, they won't like that nearly as much.

(Open in a dark hallway. Rough wooden walls, floor, bare bulbs illuminating a cozy, twisting passage. Vertag leads with a gun out, Lessala follows, with gun out and a large case strapped over her back. Janet is in Vertag's shirt pocket, Perez rides in Lessala's jacket pocket.)
Janet: And no one knows they're here?
Lessala: Apparently.
Vertag: I was stationed at HQ for a few years. They're pretty secure in their knowledge that everyone's cowed by SID. No need to spend money on surveillance or on randomly poking holes in the ground for secret tunnels.
Perez: But even ground listening would pick up-
Vertag: If anyone thought there was anything to hear. Without that, no on listens.
Janet: Lucky us.
Lessala: Apparently.
(A montage shows them walking a ways, up and down ramps, through doors, up a ladder. Strings of lights come on as they enter a length of tunnel, previous strings go out. Finally they end at the bottom of a sturdy pair of ladders leading up into the darkness.)
Vertag: We're under HQ right now.
Perez: We're going to enter through the basement?
Vertag: No. According to the map we come out into the third floor.
Lessala: You promised me a freight elevator.
Vertag: Well, maybe this'll put you in a good mood for the first SA Goon you see.
Lessala: I'm already prepped for him. (They holster weapons and start to climb.)
(Cut to a hallway inside a giant building, SID headquarters. Two giant's in police uniforms walk down the hall. They pass a janitor's closet. That door opens, Lessala and Vertag step out. They're wearing the disguises from Episode 1-17. Lessala looks older, as Inspector Adricore of Defense did. But she's dressed more like a secretary. Vertag wears a dark SID suit with dark glasses. He carries the case Lessala had been wearing)
Vertag: This way.
(Vertag leads Lessala down the hall, away from the security guards. Down a hall, through a door, and to another door. He pauses to work a key into the lock for that door.)
Lessala: (whispers) No internal checkpoints?
Vertag: That would let people know where the interesting stuff is in the building. (the door opens, he ushers her through, enters, closes the door)
(Cut to inside that office. Three walls are lined with kennels that hold one or two humans, or are empty. They all stand when the giants enter and move to the front of their cages. Vertag steps to a panel beside the door and opens it)
Vertag: A second. (he places an electronic device on the panel, it sticks. It blinks twice and then shines with a stead glow) Alarms are dead..
Human1: Alarms are- Who are you?
Lessala: We're working with Earthlings to rescue you. (she takes the case and opens it. Trays of cushioned coffin-like spaces are inside.)
Human2: Earth was destroyed! We barely made it out.
Vertag: You've been lied to. Earth's real, whole and the governments are looking for you. My government is using you against Earth's interest. (he lifts a tray that holds Janet and Perez. He moves Janet to his pocket and goes to the first cage. Lessala takes Perez and another tray)
Janet: I'm the Liaison. We're here with the Excelsior. (she takes a picture of the person in the cage with her handheld. There's a beep.) Doctor Simon Barsinster.
(Vertag raises another giant device and presses the button.)
Barsinster: Wait, you can't...(passes out. Vertag takes him from the cage and lowers him into a slot on the tray.)
Perez: (In Lessala's hand at another cage, takes that human's picture) Doctor B. Stockman. (Lessala raises the human-go-sleepy device)
(A montage passes of the giants collecting humans. Some rush to the back of the cage and press an alarm button. Cut to the glowing alarm device when they do, then back to the cage as the human passes out and slips to the floor)
(Vertag pauses at a cage that has signs of occupancy, furniture and some clothing, but no human. He hands Janet to Lessala. She holds Janet and Perez to two cages at the same time, collects humans twice the fast. Vertag finds a desk in the corner, picks up a clipboard)
Lessala: What?
Vertag: There's one human checked out for research.
Janet: What's the name?
Vertag: Number 032-302. I know where this research room is. I'll go get it.
Janet: Her!
Vertag: It, her, him, we, she, them. (He walks out and closes the door. Lessala puts Perez on the desk)
Lessala: Anyone but Vertag comes in, warn me.
Perez: (pulls out her grenade launcher) It'll be hard to miss my signal.
Lessala: Good girl. (Takes Janet back to the cages)
(Vertag skips up a few flights of stairs and around a big empty stair well. A short distance down the hall he taps a door on the room number, gets an alarm disabler out of his pocket and goes inside)
(Cut to inside. It is, of course, the lab Jamie Smith was in at the close of 3-16. Jamie works something on the table, looking up as Vertag enters.)
Jamie: (Cheerfully) Hello! Are you new?
Vertag: (Cheerfully) Yes. Sort of.
Jamie: (still cheerful) So you can authenticate a Slip two zero?
Vertag: Yes, that's a Vice copper two.
Jamie: (Smile fades) That's...last month's authentication. (She turns and runs for a corner of the table, jumping cables and ducking under electronic cards. Vertag spins to view the door, tosses his disabler at a panel. Then he runs to the end of the table.)
(Jamie reaches a large button and throws herself on it. Then she looks around the room where no alarms are going off)
Vertag: Whew! Nailed it. (He reaches down and scoops Jamie up.) You're not going to believe me, but Earth wasn't destroyed and- (gets a good look at her face) Holy crap. Janet?
Jamie: Jamie! Janet's my sist- You know Janet?
Vertag: Janet's one of my best friends. You look just like her.
Jamie: (Screams like the hounds of Thriller are after her)
Vertag: Wonderful. (he pops the go-sleepy device over her head. She goes limp and he pockets her. He carefully buttons the pocket) Janet's going to kill me.
(Vertag walks out of the room and down the hall. At the stairwell, he glances over the railing. One floor below him, Tolag stands in the open door, talking to minions who take notes in their steno notebooks. At that moment, Lessala steps into view on the landing directly beneath Tolag. She smiles up at Vertag, he gestures for her to go away. She looks confused.)
Tolag: ...And we'll be sending those units to the Security Forces in Third Nation. (He glances up, over the head of his minions to see Vertag) Vertag?
(Minions start flipping through their notebooks.)
MinionA: Vertag. I have something about his movements.
MinionB: Background surveillance on his known contacts.... Somewhere.
MinionC: I had... A letter... Concerning his...
Tolag: (Pointing) VERTAG!
Minions: Yeah, right here, I had it.
Lessala: (points over her head, silently mouths) Tolag?
Vertag: Tolag. (Minions whip around and stare up)
Minions: Vertag?
Tolag: VERTAG!! (starts pushing shoulders) Get him!
(Vertag raises gun and fires a few rounds wildly around the stairwell. Minions cower. Tolag steps back out of sight. Lessala waves goodbye and runs back the way she came)
Vertag: (steps back to the door, out of minion sight. Cups a hand to shout to the side) We're cut off! Circle around the other way! (He runs through the door)
(Cut to SID HQ, fifth floor. Vertag is bursting through doors in a mad dash. A few people in the halls start to object; he dashes past or bowls them over. They shout in anger, he ignores)
Vertag: (mutters) Fire escapes...fire escapes... Odd numbered doors on the fifth floor that face North unless the lock is a Class C... (he stops at a door marked 215, glances at the lock, smashes the window. Reaches through to unlock the door.)
(Cut to the interior of the room. TV monitors show a variety of scenes of giant society: a kids' party, an old folks' home, an empty office, an empty courtroom, surgery in an ER, a bay of parked school busses. Vertag enters, ducks behind the racks holding the monitors, picks up a trash can and smashes the window. He looks out on empty space leading down to street level.)
(Vertag leans out the window to look left and right. A fire escape is several rooms away on the right.)
Vertag: Oh. THIRD floor, odd numbered rooms, fifth floor even... (runs back to the door)
(Cut to a different hall in HQ. Tolag is directing efforts to find Vertag)
Tolag: ...and recall every SID agent with a gun.
MinionA: Sir! We've got reports, he has the Smith Earthling.
Tolag: Of course he does. Find him, but don't shoot him.
MinionC: Tolag! He's got the Earthlings.
Tolag: EarthLING.
MinionC: No, sir! They went to secure the Earthling kennel! The cages.... Sir, they're all empty.
Tolag: Wonderful. Wait, he wasn't carrying anything big enough for all the Little People. He must have help.
MinionB: Someone else, making their escape.
MinionD: The Order?
Tolag: Send half...no, send one guard in three to the basement. See if they can find the secret tunnel.
MinionA: (thoughtfully) You know, I always thought, if I was going to build a secret passage into a building like this, I'd make it come out on the second or third floor. The basement's too obvious.
(Everyone stares at him for a second)
Tolag: Look, if you're not going to offer constructive ideas, you can go count the grenades in the armory.
MinionA: Sir, I just-
Tolag: Basement.
(Cut to the sturdy ladders down into the underground passage. Lessala drops precipitously down the rungs)
Lessala: Tolag was there! Vertag's drawing their attention!.
(Cut to a closeup of Janet laying in one of the coffin tray slots)
Janet: We have to help him!
(Cut to Perez in her slot)
Perez: We are, Janet, we're escaping so he doesn't have to worry about us anymore.
(Cut to Janet)
Janet: Well, well.... Did your see if he had Jamie?
(Cut to Lessala, still dropping)
Lessala: He wouldn't have her out where anyone else could see her, Janet.
Janet: (Voice) Well, did he look....surprised?
Perez: (voice) Or angry? Betrayed?
Lessala: What are you- (jumps the last few rungs to land on the ground, starts running up the passage. Human voices shout as they enter freefall, grunt as she lands) Talking about?
Perez: If he found Jamie, he found out that she's Janet's twin sister.
Lessala: Aw! That's so cute. (She runs through a doorway while the camera stops following her. Lights before her come on, lights in the camera's view go off. Her shadow fades rapidly. Scene fades to black rather redundantly)
(Fade in to the alley behind SID HQ. Vertag crawls on the outside of a fire escape, dangling from the rail to lower himself and drop to the next railing. He gets down a few levels, then steps towards the ladder.)
(Up above him, an SID guard leans out the third floor window and shouts)
Guard: Hey! You! Stop!
(Vertag keeps on going. He kicks the ladder and rides it down to the street level.)
(Cut to the third floor. The guard climbs out and puts his foot on the first step. There's a metallic 'TINK.' He looks up with alarm)
(Cut to the ground. Vertag drops the last couple of feet to the alley, hand over his pocket. He flexes his legs, stands up, and the guard drops to the ground a few feet away from him.)
Vetag: Forgot about the security features? (He spins and runs the length of the alley)
(Cut to a view from the street. He steps out and walks to one side, away from HQ. The street ends at a riverfront. He looks left, right, jumps the rail)
(Cut to the control room of the Excelsior. The Commander stands behind one of the scanning technicians. Tech points to the screen.)
Tech1: There! Found one! It's... It's Vertag!
Commander: Where?
Tech1: Just outside the HQ.
Commander: Does he have anyone else with him?
Tech1: No, he's alone.
Commander: (to a Tech standing by the door to the compartment) We may need, um... Styles? Someone to try to decrypt his movements. Just...get the Marines.
(Cut to the Street Level. Vertag runs out of the alley, slows to a walk, starts moving down the sidewalk, away from the HQ building)
(Cut to a hotel room. Small, simple, very down-scale. A pair of suitcases rest at the foot of the only bed. The closet door opens. The floor of the closet is tipped up and a light shines from below. Lessala stands at the top of the stairs that lead down under the trap door.)
(The light goes out as she steps into the room, drops the trap door and closes the closet. She places the human carrier gently on the bed and opens a suitcase. She pulls out a wig and some clothes and starts to remove her disguise)
(Cut to the control room of the Excelsior.)
Tech1: There! We've got Lessala, Perez and Crane!
Tech2: They're in the hotel room they disappeared from.
Commander: Is Vertag headed their way?
Tech1: Um...no. No, he's headed the opposite direction.
Commander: Okay, launch the assault craft, but have them orbit the city, stealth protocols.
Tech2: Both AC away, ma'am. (Commander nods)
(Cut to a giant street. Lessala walks out of the hotel. She's dressed as a blond vamp. The case isn't visible, but she has three big sacks, signs of a shopping trip. She flags a taxi. He pulls over and she climbs inside. It moves along as suited men boil out of SID HQ and spread out along the street. The taxi goes past them, headed up the road)
(Cut to a parking garage. Panning across the parked cars, we see the pickup Vertag has been driving. A little farther on is a men's room. The door opens and Vertag steps out. He's changed to softer clothes, a coat (which must be the coat he wore during second season, when he took Perez to and through First Nation.) and a knapsack. There's a paper sack which he tosses into the back of the pickup, then walks out of the garage)
(Cut to the control room of the Excelsior. Styles, Adams, Brown stand behind the Commander who is watching the techs. Blinking dots on the screens show something moving through the streets. Vertag's is alone, Lessala's dot is clustered with Janet and Perez.)
Tech2: Vertag paused here, but he's moving again.
Tech1: They're definitely moving apart.
Commander: Which one's moving towards the pickup point?
Tech1: Um...neither one, ma'am.
Adams: Anyone got eyes on HQ?
Commander: (taps Tech2) Satellite 23.
(Cut to a screen showing a very high angle view of HQ's door. Men run in and out. A car pulls up and seven SA agents rush out of the car and into the door. Return to the Control Room view)
Commander: That what you're looking for, Colonel?
Adams: The hive's surely in a buzz. Looks like they were detected.
Brown: But detected by their success or their failure?
Commander: If they don't have the missing scientists, they may be avoiding the pickup points.
Brown: Run away, try again some other day?
Styles: Maybe they just think it's too exciting near HQ. Are they going to the backup site?
Tech2: Lessala... She might be moving towards the backup point. Might. Long way around.
Tech1: Commander! Vertag's transmitting!
Brown: He wasn't supposed to?
Styles: Then ignore everything he says.
Commander: Ignore? (Styles nods. Commander taps Tech1's shoulder)
Vertag: (Voice) Inflict! We were detected during the mission! Do not approach the HQ roof! I say again, do not approach the HQ roof!
(Cut to the screen showing HQ. SID and SA agents boil out of the doors and start running down the street. Guns are out and several carry bulky radios. More carry some sort of detection devices.)
Vertag: (Voice) Pullout Point Charlie is also compromised!
Tech1: We don't have a Charlie planned-
Styles: Ignore.
Vertag: (Voice) Inflict, we're not going to be able to be extracted in the city. We have BURNED our BRIDGES behind us!
(Humans in control room look at each other in confusion)
(Cut to a giant SID squad car. Tolag sits in the back with headphones on.)
Tolag: The bridge! The shuttle's going to descent to a bridge for a pickup! (he picks up a microphone) All units! Secure the bridges in the city!
(Fade out)
(Fade in on a city bridge crossing the river. Security forces are assembled on either end. There are tanks, riflemen, a few odd-looking weapons. Everyone scans the sky.)
(Camera pans across the empty bridge to one end. Tolag stands next to a command and control vehicle. A technician shows him a city map. There's a circle drawn)
Tech3: ...and we located his transmission from here, somewhere.
Tolag: That's a three-block area.
Tech3: Well, he kept changing frequencies and moving.
Tolag: (hand to his forehead) Yes. He didn't make it easy for you.
Tech3: Considering SID training, we're really proud of getting it down that tight.
Tolag: Of course you are. Send units to-
Tech3: Oh, we already did. He'll be in custody soon, sir.
Tolag: No, no, it's only a formality. He'll be miles from there by now. But maybe we'll get a witness.
(Camera pans from the truck down the back of the river. There's a riverside café. Past the tables on the patio, there's a window. On the other side of the window, Vertag nurses a cup of coffee. He glances at the bridge in apparently idle curiosity. A payphone near his table rings. He answers it)
Vertag: Here.
Lessala: (voice) There. (he hangs up. Walks onto the street. Speaks into his collar)
Vertag: Inflict, Lessala needs pickup at her current location. (he pats his pocket and walks down the street.)
(Cut back to Tolag)
Tolag: He's transmitting from WHERE!?!?!
Tech4: (leaning out of the truck) Sir! Radar detects a human vessel!
Tolag: Where!
Tech4: Northside park, sir! It seems to be landing!
Tolag: (Kicks the truck) Of course it is.
