They had been on the road for a few weeks when Melanie suddenly became sick. Noone knew what was wrong with her and they had not come across any pharmacy to pick up any types of antibiotics to try and help her. She stayed wrapped up in a blanket in the back seat of Rick and Lori’s SUV most of the time. Daryl kept watch on her and made sure to bring her as much water as he could find. He wanted her to stay hydrated. Their food supplies were low and they were driving in circles. Every direction for fifty miles was blocked by herds of walkers. They needed to find some place soon where they could hole up for the winter, and in the spring, start again.
But their main priorities were food and keeping the girls safe.
Melanie had become so ill she could barely walk on her own anymore. If she needed to use the bathroom, Daryl had to pick her up and carry her to a bush nearby, wait for her to finish, and then help her back up and put her back in the car.
She had become violently ill only a few days after their tryst in the RV. It started out with a mild fever, but then she began to experience a high fever alongside chills and trouble breathing. Hershel was only a veterinarian so he had no experience with human illnesses. His only advice was they find somewhere safe and let her rest while others went on a run to find medication.
“We have to do something Rick!!” screamed Daryl. “She is getting fuckin’ worse, man. She could die any day. You know that. We all see it. I am not going to sit back and let her die!!! Make a choice! Either we stay here in Georgia or we go somewhere else, but u gotta decide fast. No more pussy footin’ around!”
“Alright…alright…Fine….Everyone gather as much firewood as you can. Maggie and Glenn, you two go to that creek and fill the canteens with water. We will boil it later. Lori, Hershel and I will scout around for anything edible and we will meet back here in twenty minutes. Ok?”
Everyone went about doing their assigned chores.
Rick, Lori and Hershel walked a little ways and were about to turn back when they saw a building in the distance behind them. They walked through the underbrush and stopped right at the crest of a little hill. It had fences. On all sides. It had enough green space to put in a garden or to let kids play. It was a prison and it looked as if it had been abandoned for some time. This place was perfect. Of course there were walkers in the courtyard so that would have to be cleared and heaven knows how many were inside. But this place was their salvation.
They walked back to the road and met up with the others.
“I know we had decided to move on, but we just found something.” said Lori.
“A prison,” Hershel said. “We can go right now and clear out the field and stay there tonight. Its behind fences so we will all be safe.”
“Well, alright,” Glenn said happily. “let’s mount up and go now.”
They all got in their cars and drove to the front gates of the prison. Rick decided he would make the run up the yard and shut the gate into the courtyard so those walkers would be contained until morning. Daryl and Carol went into a guard tower and took out walkers that would be in his path.
He made it to the gate and got it closed. Everyone went back to the vehicles and unloaded their sleeping bags and supplies and got a fire going.
Daryl carefully lifted Melanie out of the car and carried her over to the fire pit and laid her down. She was getting worse. Her breathing had turned to a raspy, wheezy whisper. She was scared. Scared that she was going to die and Daryl was going to have to be the one to have to put her down. She was scared that he was going to end up alone again after they had come so far in their relationship.
He started to get up and Melanie put a hand on his arm and pulled him back down to sit next to her. She shuffled over and laid her head in his lap and he looked down at her.
“Don’t leave me, please. Im afraid if you do I wont be here when you get back.”
“Don’t talk like that. Ya gonna be fine. Just gotta get sum meds in ya system, but u gonna be just fine girl.” Daryl tried to make himself smile, so that Melanie would feel calm and stop worrying, but he knew she could see through his façade.
“Daryl. We both know im really sick. Lets not try to pretend any differently. I know whats wrong with me. I have laid here and laid here trying to figure out what this could possibly be and I finally know what it is. Its pneumonia. I knew a woman who had it and with treatment she was fine. But I have been sick for weeks now and I am not getting better. I am getting worse. We all know where I am headed.”
“Aint gonna happen. Not while im breathing.” And with that he moved her head gently off of him and laid her down on the blanket and walked off.
“Daryl!!” Rick called after him. “Where you going?”
“I aint lettin’ her die!! I’ll be back!!” He walked through the gates, shut them, and walked towards his motorcycle. He hopped on and raced down the dirt road just as dawn was peeking up over the horizon.
