Dean and Liam were in the shower, Liam scrubbing his husband’s chest lovingly. “So basically what you’re saying is you were pushing me away to protect me?”
Dean took the blond’s hand in his. “I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense, but you should know by now I would die for you. And that’s not just something I say, I actually did die and go to hell for you.”
Liam let out a little sigh and turned Dean around to start on his back. “But I thought we were partners in this. I’m pretty sure what you do with me you don’t do with your brother. That makes it a bit different.”
Dean turned back around and pressed his naked body against Liam’s to kiss him passionately. “You’re right about that, I don’t sleep with my brother. And I’m telling you all of this now because I remembered why you’re here. Cupid didn’t start the spark on a random whim, I need you.”
“You were really worrying me. Sam is worried, though he won’t say anything because he’s still kinda being an idiot, only less so. The last time you retreated into yourself you tried to pick up a bar maid, and words cannot describe how badly that hurt.”
“I know,” Dean brushed Liam’s wet hair out of his face. “I’m just really not used to being scared. We’ve had a lot of shit thrown at us, and even when things looked really bad I always had some glimmer of hope. I had you and Sam, and I knew that somehow one of us would pull something out of our asses to save the day. But now things are so bad I’m in bed with Crowley. And let’s not forget I took the mark from Cain. I feel a little different and I don’t like it.”
Liam leaned in to kiss the base of Dean’s neck as his fingers ghosted over the mark. “If you had said something sooner I would have told you that not that much has changed. It’s just something else that has the world on the brink, and you still have us. I haven’t seen anything yet that makes me think we won’t find a way. We just have to find Adrian quickly and kill him.”
Dean reached to turn the water off and handed Liam a towel. “Yeah, well, good luck with that. There’s tons of demonic activity around, and people popping up without souls, but not a single sighting of Adrian.”
“You know what that tells me?” Liam smiled a little as he dried off.
“What?”
“Well, only a coward hides like that. Only someone who doesn’t have things in hand as well as they say they do behaves like that.”
Dean kissed Liam softly before reaching for his clothes. “You can find a bright side to almost anything. But that’s not going to make finding and killing the bastard any easier.”
When they finished dressing they went into the war room and walked in on Sam talking to Castiel about Gadreel and Metaron on speaker. “Gadreel? Gadreel is working for Metatron? For how long?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know,” Castiel answered.
“So, Metatron made Gadreel kill Kevin?” Dean joined the conversation.
“It would explain a lot, and there have been no new prophets, which Metatron could have fixed to his advantage.”
“And Gadreel said that angels are returning to heaven? How? I thought that the spell was irreversible.”
“That's what Crowley said,” Sam sighed. “Look, let's just find Gadreel and beat some answers out of him.”
“Yeah, here's something to start with that. Uh... Hold on, I'm sending you a photo of the symbol that drew all the angels in.”
Sam opened up his laptop and a picture of a weird symbol loaded. “Okay, got it.”
“It's acting as some kind of angel siren. I think it's a spell. The ingredients used to create it were very odd... Griffin feathers, bones of a fairy. I've never seen it before.”
“Yeah. Me, neither. Alright. Let me see what I can find.”
“Honor bar,” Castiel mumbled mostly to himself. “What's honorable about a miniature bar in a motel room?”
“Everything,” Dean said, earning a glare from Liam.
“How are you, Dean?” Castiel asked.
“I'm fine, Cas. How about you?”
“I miss my wings. Life on the road... smells.”
“Yeah,” Sam chuckled softly. “Listen, I got a match, and it's not from the lore... it's from police records. Looks like that symbol you found was spotted at a handful of crime scenes the last couple days, all multiple homicides.”
“And where were these crime scenes?” Castiel asked.
Sam pulled up pictures and reports. “Uh, Utah... Baker, Hill Valley.”
“And I'm in Bishop's Falls, Utah.”
“Also looks like most of the crime scenes were in industrial areas.”
“Looks like Gadreel is heading north.”
“What's the next big town?” Dean asked as he motioned for Liam to start packing.
“There are two. It could be Auburn or Ogden.”
Dean gave a little nod. “Alright, you take Auburn, we'll take Ogden... meet in the middle.” Sam hung up and Dean turned to his brother. “Didn't we work a case in Ogden?”
Sam thought about it a moment and nodded. “Yeah. It was a witch situation, right?”
“Yeah. There was that kid in town that helped us, wasn't there?”
“Yes. We should call him, see if he's still in business.”
“Yeah. What was his name?”
“I don’t know how you two remember where we’ve been or why,” Liam came down with the bags. “I just remember being dragged all over creation and killing stuff. If it wasn’t for my journal I wouldn’t remember what was where.”
“Your journal?” Dean raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, that’s what hunters do right? Jason had one, your dad had one. I started one a little while ago. I don’t really go through it, that’ll be for future generations if anyone cares enough.”
Dean took out his keys and headed for the door. “I’ve never seen you with a journal.”
“We don’t spend every waking moment together either, so...”
They drove out to Utah and found the shop of the guy that helped them out. They broke in and started looking around with flashlights. “Got an open box of feathers over here,” Dean found them on the counter.
Sam opened up a closet and found the guy hanging dead on the door, his eyes burned out. “Dean...”
Dean sighed. “We got to find Gadreel before he lights up the bat signal.” He turned to Liam. “I know you like to pretend you’re normal, but uh, now’s not the time for delusions.”
Liam’s eyes narrowed. “You’re being a little mean.”
Dean kissed his forehead. “Don’t mean to be, but we don’t have a lot of time here. Look, Ian has lots of stuff here, and I don’t think he’ll mind if we help ourselves. We need an angel trap.”
Liam shook his head. “I’m just a freak show to you, aren’t I?”
Dean stroked his hair. “No, you’re a beautiful and talented asset. Can you do it?”
“I guess we’ll find out.”
A little while later they had used the information of where all the other mass murders were to try and figure out where Gadreel would be. They were pretty sure they had the right spot when Sam walked through a dark alley trying to call Castiel. “Cas, it's Sam again. Call us. We need your help.”
As hoped, while Dean and Liam were watching from above Gadreel started closing in on Sam. Dean tossed a little ball of dark red powder, and when it hit the ground a ring of holy fire surrounded the angel. “Hey, douchebag,” Dean called to him, smirking and waving when Gadreel looked up.
“Remember me?” Sam looked at the angel with hatred in his eyes.
“I remember you,” Gadreel turned to face Liam when they came down. “And you’re looking much worse than the last time I saw you.”
They dragged Gadreel to an abandoned warehouse and tied him up. Sam and Liam watched over the angel while Dean gathered a few things. Gadreel gave Sam a little smirk. “If this is like looking into a fun house mirror for me, I cannot imagine what it is like for you.”
Sam’s jaw clenched tight, but he didn’t do anything. “How long have you been working for Metatron?”
“I will not talk, and you cannot make me.”
“Yeah?” Sam snorted.
“I have been you, Sam Winchester. Your insides reek of shame and weakness.”
Sam lost it and punched Gadreel hard in the face before Dean came in and pulled him back. “Sam! Come here, both of you.”
“You do know he’s just goading you,” Liam said to Sam as they went into a little hallway to discuss things.
“You shut up,” Dean growled a little at Liam.
Liam raised an eyebrow. “What the fuck are you getting pissy with me for? You know I’m right.”
Dean shook his head. “Yeah, I know, but something is bothering me here. You get on my ass when I don’t share, but he said you’re looking worse than the last time he saw you. When he killed Kevin and split you were recovering from being stabbed and nearly dying.” He advanced on Liam until the blond’s back was against the wall and Dean stared him straight in the eye. “Now I need you to be straight with me. Have you been hiding anything from me?”
“Dean...” Liam acted like he was holding back a laugh. “You trust Gadreel and anything he says over me?”
Dean took a steadying breath. “Like you I’ve had to learn to read people. It was the way he said it. And you’re dancing around a straight answer, which means he’s telling the truth. Come on, out with it.”
Liam huffed. “Well at least I noticed something was up with you, and didn’t need a third party to tell me shit.”
“Liam...” Dean was starting to get angry.
“Fine.” Liam directed his gaze away from Dean. “While you had your head up your ass I started to feel run down and then when I started checking my temperature was usually around a hundred degrees. Happy?”
“Damn it!” Dean hit the wall next to Liam’s head. “Until we get something figured out you’re grounded from angel matters.”
Liam growled and his nostrils flared. “I am not a child and you can’t ground me!”
“Whoa… What’s going on here?” Sam seemed confused.
Dean turned to his brother. “I’m sure you remember all that happened when we got the blade. He had a seizure, Crowley made a comment about the vessel wearing out.”
“Yeah, I remember,” Sam gave a little nod. “But that was Crowley.”
“What you don’t remember is back when we did that hunter rescue thing, Gadreel basically told me the same thing. And then I asked Cas what he thought, and he said it could be true.”
“Dean, it’s just a little temperature,” Liam was very annoyed. “Other than being a little tired I’m fine.”
“Quit being an idiot!” Dean snapped and shoved Liam hard into the wall and he lost his balance and fell. “I’m sorry,” Dean mumbled as he helped him up. “I’m just… Don’t you get it? Your freak has been flexing a lot of muscle lately, and it could be killing you. What worries the hell out of me is Gadreel could be seeing something I can’t. I don’t deal well with losing you.”
Liam put a hand on Dean’s shoulder. “Don’t you think things would work better though if you had an adult conversation with me instead of barking out orders? I would think by now you’d know better than to think that would work.”
Dean put his hand over his husband’s. “And you should know me pretty well by now.”
“I do, which is why I will let you two handle the interrogation for now. But we’ll talk more later.”
“Thank you,” Dean seemed slightly relieved.
Sam looked to where Gadreel was still tied up. “What do you think?”
Dean studied the angel a moment. “He's not gonna crack that fast. We need Cas for this.”
“Any word from him?”
Dean shook his head. “No. I tried him again. He hasn't called, he hasn't texted. I turned on the GPS on his phone. He's still in the same town where we talked to him last.”
“What the hell?”
“I don't know. You got to go find him.”
Sam raised an eyebrow. “Wait, what? You’re kicking me out too?”
“You're too close to this, man. We're not at this five minutes, you're already going Liam Neeson on his ass. I got this.”
Sam gave a little sigh but left. Dean walked back out to Gadreel and stood over him. The angel seemed smug. “So, he acts tough, and you show kindness. Is that how this works?”
“No. See, I don't care whether you talk. You're gonna pay for what you did to him...and Kevin.” Dean wasted no time in slicing Gadreel up with an angel blade, listening to the screams. Dean paused a moment to wipe the blood off on a rag. “Word around the campfire is, you let the snake into the garden, ruined it for all humanity.”
“I set them free. I loved humanity!”
“That could be debated,” Liam commented and Dean shot him a glare. “What? I’m just sitting here like you asked. I can’t talk now?”
Gadreel chuckled. “You have the best weapon of all, but you won’t use it. You’re soft.”
Dean smacked him hard. “Now look, you tell me about this getting back into heaven crap and I'll end this quick. Otherwise, you can sit here and rot in those chains forever. Up to you.”
“All your talk, all your bluster... You think you are invincible. The three of you against the world, right?”
“Damn straight.”
“You really think Sam would do anything for you?”
Dean faltered, but only for a second. “Oh, I know he would.”
“I have been in your brother's body, Dean. He would not trade his life for yours.”
“Well, thanks for the rerun, pal. Sam's already told me all that crap. Hell, he's told me worse.”
“He told you that he has always felt that way, that he thinks you are just a scared little boy who's afraid to be on his own because daddy never loved him enough? And he is right, isn't he? Right to think you are a coward, a sad, clingy, needy...”
“While what he says is a little bit true, you do know he just wants to piss you off enough to kill him, right?” Liam commented.
“I don’t need the peanut gallery!” Dean snapped.
Liam snorted. “Just trying to still be helpful. You know we’ve all got our shit, and he’s poking yours.”
“He doesn’t have the guts to kill me,” Gadreel practically dared him.
Dean only chuckled. “Everyone in this room knows different. But you're not afraid to die, are you? You're afraid to be left in these chains forever. Well, you can sit here and rot, you son of bitch.”
Dean leaned down to grab Liam’s arm and drag him into the bathroom. Once the door was shut Dean pulled Liam into a hug. The blond ran his fingers through his husband’s hair. “I wish you wouldn’t let stuff like that get to you so much.”
“That’s not the only thing that’s getting to me.” Dean let Liam go and rubbed the Mark of Cain on his arm. “Like I told you earlier...”
“I know, but you’ve got me here. I admit, the body isn’t one hundred percent, but my mind is working just fine. You just have to tell me what you need.”
Dean went over to the sink and splashed a little cold water on his face. “What I need is to be able to trust that you won’t hide shit from me.”
Liam rolled his eyes. “Like you weren’t doing the same? And we probably both did it for the same reason. But it’s all out now, so...”
“I also need to go rip that son of a bitch apart.”
“That you can do, as long as you don’t kill him.”
Two hours later Gadreel was bloodied up pretty good and unconscious on the floor still handcuffed to the now overturned chair. Sam came in looking a little shaken. “I've been calling you. I mean, why didn't you, uh...”
Dean was sitting on the floor beside Liam. “He won’t talk.”
“I figured. Dean, listen. Metatron has Cas. He's offering up a trade.”
It was Dean’s turn to looked shocked. “We can't trust Metatron.”
“I know that. Obviously. But look, this is the first time we're gonna know for sure where Metatron is. Let's take Gadreel to the meet up, make the exchange, and then trap Metatron.”
Liam’s eyes flashed red. “I have a beyond brilliant idea,” he smirked evilly.
Dean glared at him. “I thought you were taking a knee on this one for me.”
“Dean, sweetheart, I said I would stay out of the interrogation, and I did. Also, I’m not going to fight, I’m going to spy.”
Sam looked to Gadreel’s vessel. “I think I see what you’re getting at. Yeah, if you think you can pull it off, it is pretty smart. We could find out exactly what Metatron is up to and where he is.”
Dean shook his head. “I still don’t like it.”
Astiratu shot him a nasty glare. “Because of a little complication you would have me sit back and do absolutely nothing? Not happening, cupcake. I may agree to scale back a little bit, but I will do what I was created to do. I won’t be gone long.” A bright aqua light flowed out of Liam’s mouth and into Gadreel’s vessel. After a minute his eyes opened. “Holy ow...” he groaned as he stretched a little.
“Everything good?” Sam asked.
“About as good as it can be.”
Sam helped him get upright. “Okay, so, we’re going to have to treat you like we would treat Gadreel. You okay with that?”
Astiratu blinked a few times. “I wouldn’t have brought up the idea if I wasn’t. You should know by now I’m made of some pretty tough stuff.”
“I know,” Sam nodded. “It’s just a little harder to throw someone I care about in the trunk.”
In the morning Sam and Dean stood outside Castiel’s hotel room by the car. “He’s late,” Sam said looking around for any sign.
“Or he's not gonna show,” Dean seemed a little wary.
“Of course I'm gonna show,” Metatron suddenly appeared near them. “I was just waiting for you two to finish setting up your little trap for me. Uh... Am I hitting my mark? Well, come on. Let's go. I'm waiting.”
Dean shrugged. “Sorry to uh, disappoint, but no trap here. We didn’t figure there’s a point.”
Metatron shook his head. “Dean, why don’t I believe you?”
“How the hell should I know? But you have Cas, and if we trap you, I doubt we’d get him back, so...” Dean suddenly pulled an angel blade and lunged.
Metatron flicked both him and Sam into the car. Then he went over and popped the trunk. “Bye bye, he said as he waved his hand and all the angel warding disappeared. The cuffs came off and he helped Gadreel out of the trunk while a car pulled up and Castiel got out. “Well, a deal is a deal.”
“Why are you doing this?” Dean asked.
“Because I can. Because you and your little brother and your fine, feathered friend, and the mysteriously missing freak, and all those secrets you've got locked away in your bunker can't stop me. But I am gonna enjoy watching you try. It's gonna be a hell of a show. I'll see you around, Castiel. Never forget I gave you a chance.” He turned to leave with Gadreel behind him, then he paused and looked at the angel. “Wait a minute.”
“Something the matter?” Gadreel tilted his head looking puzzled.
“Yeah. Astiratu is the best weapon they’ve got, but where is he? He should be ambushing me at any moment, and yet...”
Gadreel turned toward the brothers and smirked. “There is an advantage to me being inside Sam for so long. I know that Astiratu is growing weaker because of his body. And of course, Dean being who he is, made his companion promise to sit things out for a while. I told you Dean’s weakness would be their downfall.”
“You did,” Metatron gave a little nod. “You’re quite good.”
“That is why you chose me for this mission, is it not?”
Metatron glanced at the brothers for a moment. “No, you’re not the one I chose, you sneaky little worm.”
Gadreel’s eyebrows furrowed. “I don’t-”
Before he could finish the sentence Metraon touched his forehead and there was a bright flash of light and a scream. The aqua light flew out of Gadreel’s mouth into Metaron’s. The body jerked for about a minute until there was another bright aqua flash. “That was more difficult than I thought it would be. I see I underestimated our Father’s pet. I’ll have to up my game.”
“I am so sorry,” Gadreel seemed pained.
“Not your fault, it just means we have some work to do,” Metatron said as they disappeared.
Dean practically ran into Castiel’s hotel room where Liam was lying on the bed. Sam and Castiel were right behind him, and since Dean seemed too scared Sam reached to put his fingers on the blond’s neck. After a minute he shook his head with a frown. Tears started streaming down Dean’s cheeks when Liam suddenly inhaled deeply and sat up. “We need to prepare for dawn,” he mumbled before falling back out cold.
“Who?” Sam blinked. “I swear, just a minute ago he was...”
Dean wiped away the tears and sat down on the bed to rest his hand on his husband’s arm. “I have a feeling it was someone who loves the psycho as much as I do. Now, somebody want to tell me what the hell's going on here?”
“Metatron is trying to play God,” Castiel answered.
Sam raised an eyebrow. “Play God? How the hell are we supposed to stop this guy?”
Dean thought about it for a moment. “Alright, so what if there is a stairway to heaven? We find it and get a drop on the guy.”
Sam’s eyes widened a little. “You want to sneak onto the Death Star, take out the emperor?”
Castiel looked a little confused. “Okay, I'm not sure what a fictional battle station in space has to do with this, but if taking out the emperor means taking out Metatron, I'm on board.”
Sam and Dean exchanged surprised looks. “Wait, did you just understand a Death Star reference?” Dean asked.
Castiel nodded. “Yeah, I think so. But I don't understand what that has to do with heaven.”
“You sure you're all right?” Dean asked.
“Yes. Are you? There's something different about you.”
Dean reached to pat the angel on the shoulder with his right hand. “I’m fine.”
Castiel pulled back his sleeve to reveal the Mark of Cain. “What have you done?”
Dean yanked his hand back. “It's a means to an end.”
“Damn it, Dean!” Castiel growled.
Dean leaned over to scoop Liam into his arms. “Look, you find heaven, you drop a dime. Meantime, I got a knight to kill.”
Dean went out to the car and Sam turned to the angel. “Be safe out there.”
Castiel gave him a small smile. “You, too. Hey, Sam. You keep an eye on him.”
A few days later Dean went into the bedroom to check on Liam. “How are you feeling?”
Liam sat up and took a deep breath. “I don’t know what happened, but I pretty much just slept the last three days. Now I’m hungry. Can I have a bacon pizza?”
Dean sat on the edge of the bed with a smile. “You can have anything you want.”
“Well then, can we go back to Tennessee for at least a little while? I like it better there.”
“Tell you what, I’ll go order your pizza, and then I’ll talk to Sam about that. I’m sure he’d like to actually see the kids instead of just talking to them on the phone anyway.” Dean moved to kiss his husband softly, but it quickly turned heated and he ended up on top of Liam. Then he paused. “Now I’m torn.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “Why, because you think I’ll break? You haven’t been in the mood in a while, and I’m not made of glass.”
Dean gave him a little smirk. “In that case...” He ripped his shirt off and then leaned back down to kiss Liam deeply.
