What a lovely wedding. I’m so happy for Simon and Victoria,” Milly said as she rested her hand on her swollen belly feeling the baby move.
Teddy smiled and agreed.
“They seem very suited to each other and clearly they love each other,” Teddy replied.
Milly looked over at her sister in law and decided now would be a good time to inquire about her and Heath.
“How are you and Heath?”
Teddy smiled.
“We are making things work. I’m so thankful that Heath agreed to marry me and that I didn’t have to marry Jeff Hollister. I’m still mad at myself for getting caught in that storm. I miss my father but I love being at the ranch and getting to know all of you,” Teddy said wistfully.
“Are your two still in separate bedrooms?” Milly asked. Teddy knew Milly wasn’t asking to be nosy. Both her sisters in law were also good friends and they cared about herself and Heath.
“Yes, but we are close to making that change. While I can’t wait for him to love me fully, his patience has meant a lot,” Teddy commented. She bit her lip thinking about Heath’s touch and what he’d done to her the night before. She was eager to be in his arms.
Before Milly could respond, a rider came up on them fast. Milly didn’t recognize the man but she looked over at Teddy and saw her face drain of all color. She looked terrified.
Teddy thought of urging the horses to move faster but was afraid Milly might come to harm.
“Stop,” the man said. Teddy stopped the buggy.
“You need to come with me,” he said to Teddy. “I want to show your father and mine that you belong to me. You ain’t married to that other man no more.”
“What do you mean, I’m not married,” Teddy asked, her voice catching, fearing Heath had been hurt by Jeff.
“Cuz you ain’t. Now come with me!”
“She isn’t going to go anywhere with you,”Milly said. The man drew his gun pointing it at Milly.
“No!” Teddy shouted. “Jeff, I’ll go with you, but you can’t harm her.”
Milly had been concerned but now she was scared not only for hers and Teddy’s lives but the life of her baby.
“Then come here,” Jeff said menacingly. Teddy squeezed Milly’s hands after she gave her the reins.
“Jeff, if you’re going to take me away, I need to go home and pack. No one is there so we should be able to get what I need and leave quickly. If I don’t get my things then we’ll have to buy new things and I know you don’t want to do that,” Milly heard Teddy say. Milly and Teddy’s eyes met, and Milly knew Teddy was telling her where they were going.
Milly sat still and waited for Jeff and Teddy to ride way. She was scared that if she drew attention to herself, Jeff might hurt her.
Once they were out of sight, Milly turned the buggy around and headed toward town. She hoped Heath was ok.

Teddy prayed for Milly and the baby and hoped they were safe. She knew Milly understood her message about going to the house first. She wouldn’t let herself think about Heath and that something would have happened to him.
Jeff was holding on to her as they rode, Teddy feeling the sharp contrast of Jeff’s rough demeanor to Heath’s gentle ways when she rode with him. And while she was hoping the ranch hands would be around to stop Jeff, she feared they’d be hurt. Jeff did not seem to be in a good state of mind.
They were just approaching the sign indicating they were at the ranch and the road split when Jeff turned his horse away from the house.
“Jeff, I need to get my things,” she said, her heart beating faster.
“We’ll buy you new things,” he said dismissively.
“But Jeff, my things are special to me. Some of them were my mama’s. I promise I won’t take long,” she pleaded. If she couldn’t get him to take her to the house, Heath might never find her.
They rode on a few more minutes and she hoped she was getting through to him. He stopped the horse and she thought maybe they were turning around.
“This is a good place,” he said, stopping. Teddy swallowed hard, fear bubbling up inside.
“A good place for what?” she asked, her voice sounding breathless, her heart beating faster.
Jeff dismounted and pulled Teddy off the horse roughly, causing her to fall to the ground. Her knees and hands were scraped and for a moment, Teddy was paralyzed with fear.
“Get over here,” Jeff said grabbing her arm. He pulled her up and Teddy feared her shoulder was going to pop out of its socket.
He threw Teddy to the ground and began to use his hands to grope at her. He was trying to get her skirt pushed up while fumbling with the buttons on his pants.
Teddy cried, moving and trying to get away but Jeff’s hold was too strong. She didn’t want her first time to be with him. She didn’t want him touching her where Heath had. She screamed and he slapped her.
“Shut up! You’re mine now!”
Jeff was tired of struggling and got up, pulling Teddy with him.
“Take your clothes off,” he demanded. Teddy knew she’d never outrun him but if she could stall long enough, maybe Heath would find her.
With trembling hands she started with the buttons on her blouse. Jeff was impatient and reached for her. He ripped open her blouse and let his hands touch her roughly. Teddy cried, wanting to be sick at being touched intimately by him.
He stepped back, a lustful look in his eyes.
“Take everything off and go lay down,” he said and Teddy felt the bile rising in their throat. She began to vomit, and Jeff grabbed her by her hair.
“I said take off your clothes!” He shouted. Teddy sobbed as she began to remove her skirt.
Heath and Nick rode full bore toward the ranch. They arrived and saw some of the hands milling about.
“Where are they?” Heath shouted.
The men looked confused.
“Who?” Duke asked.
“A man kidnapped Teddy and she convinced him to come here first,” Nick explained.
“Ain’t seen nobody,” Duke said.
“Damn. Dammit!” Heath yelled. He got back up on Charger and rode out. Nick called instructions to the men and followed, praying they wouldn’t be too late to help Teddy.
Heath reached where the road split and urged Charger on. He knew his horse was exhausted but Heath had to find Teddy. He stopped, looking around for any signs that they had passed that way. Nick had just caught up to Heath when they heard “I said take off your clothes!”
Nick looked at Heath when they heard Jeff’s voice and Heath’s demeanor changed. Nick knew if Heath got to Jeff first, his brother would kill the other man.
