File 18: Breakfast in Bed
Sighing, Riley crawled back under the covers, arranging the pillows behind herself. The events of the previous night were coming back to her. She’d spent the night with Krycek? Judging by how she felt, they’d done more than just share a bed. Her memories were a little foggy, but she thought she’d enjoyed it. That was odd. It was rare that she remembered enjoying a night with a man. Usually she loathed herself in the morning. It mattered little where she woke up, but it was better if she woke up elsewhere. It was easier to sneak off and get a little more sleep in her own bed.
She looked up to see Krycek walk in with a tray carefully balanced in his hands. He set it down in front of her and sat down on her other side on the bed. “I hope these taste alright. I haven’t made pancakes in a long time.”
She picked up the fork and cut off a piece, popping it into her mouth. She put the fork down as she chewed. She was silent for a long time before she turned to look at him with a thoughtful expression. “They taste like the ones my mother used to make.”
“That’s a good thing?”
“It depends on how you want to look at it. It’s good in that I miss her pancakes, but bad in how I feel. I miss her.”
Krycek looked uncomfortable. “I don’t know what to say.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Riley said reassuringly, picking the fork back up and taking another bite. They’re really good.”
“I’m glad you like them,” he said with a smile of relief.
“Don’t take this the wrong way, but I’d eat them regardless of what they taste like. I’m starving.”
“I think I understand.”
“It’s all the energy I burned off last night.”
“Speaking of that, how do you feel today?”
Riley paused in her eating. “Feel? A little limp, but otherwise fine. Why?”
“You were acting a little odd last night, so I had to ask.”
“I guess you would see my behavior as odd given how little you know about me.”
“This wouldn’t be a problem if you’d tell me things.”
“These aren’t things I can tell you about, Alex. They’re so deeply a part of me that I don’t even think about them anymore.”
“You called me Alex,” he said, his voice filled with wonder. “It wasn’t just your need talking.”
“In part, it was. Calling you by your name got you to act the way I wanted you to.”
“So why do that now? Why not just simply continue to call me Krycek as you used to?”
“Because I don’t loathe myself this morning. Normally, after a night of sex, I despise myself for it, for having to lower myself and find someone to help me out.”
“There are other options, you know.”
She gave a short laugh. “Don’t you think I know, that I’ve tried? Nothing else works. You have no idea how many mornings I’ve woken up feeling disgusted at what I’d done just to keep the nightmares away.”
“You don’t hate yourself for last night?”
“Strangely, no.” She set the fork down on the empty plate, took a sip of the orange juice, and looked him in the eye. “Odd, isn’t it? I let you near me fully expecting to feel like that in the morning, but when I woke up and saw the blankets beside me, I couldn’t immediately remember who’d been there. That’s not normally a problem. When I saw you in the kitchen and then came back in here, I remembered it all. I don’t understand this.”
“You’re not going to get any argument from me about it. I know what it’s like to hate yourself for giving in, but I’ve never dealt with anything like what you’ve described. It’s no wonder that you’re not fond of men if all of your experiences have led to feelings like that.” He stroked her cheek as he spoke. “You don’t ever have to feel that way again. I’ll stay as long as you want me to.”
She moved the tray down onto the floor. “That’s where things get complicated, isn’t it? Our jobs are in conflict. If you don’t take me in, your dead.”
“I don’t really want to think about that just yet. Please, Riley. Can’t we just be together for now without worrying?”
“That won’t work, Alex, and you know it. Pretending otherwise is foolish. I can’t relax with that hanging over our heads. It needs to be taken care of. I refuse to let myself be hurt like that. I won’t get involved with someone when it’s entirely possible that it’s a bad idea. In fact, I’m quite positive that it’s a bad idea anyways. It’s always a bad idea for us Hunters to get involved with men. We get attached and it interferes with our work.”
“Maybe it could work,” he insisted. “We’ll get this figured out first. When that’s taken care of, we’ll talk about this.” He pulled her into his arms, noting happily that she didn’t resist. He held her tightly. She lay with her ear over his heart, listening to it beat. It was slower than it had been the night before, but it was still pleasant to listen to.
“Do you have any sort of idea as to what you want to do about this rather sticky situation we’re in?”
“Beyond running as far away as we can, no. Inside, I know that’s a bad idea. The Syndicate will find me eventually and you have a job to do. I won’t ask you to leave that. I know you won’t.”
“Good call that,” she told him.
“Do you trust me?” she asked, looking up and raising an eyebrow.
“Yes.”
“I do have a plan, but there are a few things I need to take care of first, though. That should only take a day.”
“Not going to fill me in?”
“I’ll tell you when this stuff is taken care of. The plan largely depends on how that goes.”
“That’s not very reassuring.”
“You’re used to taking risks with your life, aren’t you?”
“Yes, but the less risk there is to your life the happier I am.” He slid his hands up to her face and cupped it, kissing her nose. “I just found you; I’m not about to do anything to loose you.”
Riley nuzzled his neck. “Don’t worry about me. I’ve faced down worse things than the people you work for.”
“You don’t know anything about them.”
She pulled back and gave him a look. “Let me put it this way. I’ve gone up against things that make you wonder what the plural of apocalypse is.”
He paused. “There’s a plural of apocalypse? I always thought that was a one time only thing.”
“Do you have any idea how many apocalypse cults there are out there? Including the ones made up of humans? I’ve met five in my life time, and I’m told that there have been quite a few more that have shown up around the state of California alone. When you look at the number over the rest of the world, well…”
“I see your point.”
“Earth has come so close to annihilation so many times it’s not funny anymore.”
“So you’ll be ok.”
“Trust me on that.”
“You’re not giving me a choice in the matter.” After pulling her back towards him and kissing her deeply, he said, “Is there anything you want me to do?”
“Well, you can stop teasing me with those hands of yours for starters.”
“Oh? What would you have me do with them instead?”
“You seem like a reasonably intelligent person. You figure it out.”
He rolled her onto her back and pinned her hands up above her head. “Now is that an invitation? Do you really want me?”
“Do I have to give you an engraved invitation and a poem declaring that? I’m inviting you to do whatever you want. I have a good guess as to roughly what that would be. The sheer fact that I would even let someone near me a second time is saying something.”
“You’ve never had sex with the same person twice?”
“Remember what I said about the loathing?” He nodded, understanding. “That’s why. I’m curious as to what it would be like. Besides,” she said, freeing one of her hands and running a finger down his throat starting at his chin and stopping in the middle of his chest. “If I’m going to be involved with you, I need to know if I can stand it more than once.”
“That’s the first time you’ve said that you’re considering that,” he said, sitting up. “You’ll let me know if I’m being too rough?”
“I don’t think that’ll be a problem, but yes, you’ll know.”
That was good enough for Krycek. He lay back down on his side, grabbing her stray hand and pinning it back up with the other as he kissed her. Tenderly at first, then roughly with more urgency. She’d bitten him the night before, so he figured it would be fine with her if he nibbled her lips. The response was promising. Her eyes half closed and she leaned into him. Encouraged, he nibbled his way across her cheek and down to her earlobe, biting down hard. Surprisingly, she leaned her head into him, straining at his hands. Enjoying the struggle and knowing full well that she was stronger than he was, he gripped her wrists as hard as he could a he bit as hard as he could on different parts of her ear. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She kept her eyes half open while she brought one of her legs up. She twisted and wrapped her leg around him as best she could.
Riley broke the grip his teeth had on her ear and she got a hold on his neck. It was then that Krycek realized that she’d been gentle the night before. She had a strong set of teeth and it was almost painful. As she nibbled up and down his neck, he relaxed into it and released her hands so that he could run one hand up the length of her bare leg, reveling in the smoothness of it. With her hands free now, she slid them up under his shirt, lightly dragging her nails over his skin. It felt like she was tracing lines of fire over his skin. He gasped and jerked back. As he did so, he felt something on his neck. He moved his hand away from Riley’s leg and touched it. When he looked at his fingers he saw blood.
Shocked, he looked down at her. “What was that for?”
“You’re the one who moved suddenly,” she pointed out. “It’s not bleeding as badly as it feels. Trust me on that. Come here,” she said, moving back up against him, pulling his head down a little. “I’ll make it feel better.”
With her body pressed up against his, she put her lips to the injury, feeling him tense beneath her. She smiled and gently licked at it to clean the area and blew on it gently to ease the sting. He relaxed just as she was pulling back.
“That does feel better, thanks, but didn’t it bother you to lick it like that?”
“Not really. It’s a force of habit. A lot of the things I hunt can track you by the smell of blood. If you’re bleeding, it’s better to have as little as possible on you and licking it away is often the only solution. After a while, you get used to doing it. Why? Did it bother you?”
“To be honest, it’s kind of a turn on. I hope that doesn’t bother you.”
She gave him a strange look. “You’re definitely the most messed up person I’ve ever been with.”
“Is this a problem?”
“Only if you keep talking,” she told him curtly. “There are better things to do with your mouth than that.”
“What abut my hands?” he asked, slyly.
“Shut up and do something before I change my mind and tie you to the bed.”
As tempted as he was to see if Riley would make good on the threat, Krycek decided that it would be wiser to say nothing and concentrate on running his hands along her sides, pushing he silky fabric of her tank top up, intending to take it off. She beat him to it by taking his off to give her access to his chest and shoulders. She lay back and looked at him with a calculating eye before he eased her onto her back and lay down on top of her. Riley wrapped her arms around him, letting go of the tight reigns she kept on her emotions. Free from those restraints, she let Krycek’s insistent mouth goad her into reciprocating his actions.
In the course of their passions, the remainder of their clothing came off, though if anyone had asked them how, they wouldn’t have been able to say how with any certainty. This time, they took their time and explored each other’s bodies, finding spots that were highly sensitive to the touch and spots where touch was pleasurable. Riley found a ticklish spot on Krycek’s left side that she exploited mercilessly until he found an opening and was able to straddle her chest, once again pinning her hands above her head. As his hands were larger than hers, he got both of her wrists in one hand, using the other to caress her jaw line. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but the phone rang, interrupting him.
He looked down the hallway in annoyance. Riley laughed at him. “Don’t look so grouchy, Alex,” she said, wriggling out from under him. “I’ll be right back.”
“This really spoils the mood, though,” he grumped.
Riley leaned down and kissed him. “I wouldn’t worry about that. You’ll be able to get right back into it if I have anything to say about that.” She pulled her pajamas back on and went to answer the phone.
Krycek leaned back with his arms behind his head, trying to be patient. When she didn’t come back after a few minutes, he got a little worried, so he pulled the jeans back on and went out to see what was going on. Riley was sitting on her couch cross legged with a smile on her face, talking animatedly into the phone. He sat down beside her and put an arm around her shoulders. She looked at him, smiled, and turned back to her conversation. He pulled her over into his lap. She squealed in surprise.
“No, grandmother, I’m alright. It’s just Alex.” She paused. “No, not that Alex. Yes, the other one. That’s not your business! Wait, grandmother. grandmother? Damn.” She hung up the phone. “Thanks a lot, Alex.” She said sourly. “My grandmother wants to meet you.”
“I’m not seeing the problem here.”
“No, of course you wouldn’t. My grandmother is the one who told me about the Hunter’s Moon and the bit of fiction I gave you in your motel room. Turns out it wasn’t as fictional as I thought, but that’s beside the point. I would have rather waited until I was sure where this is all going to introduce the two of you.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
She shook her head. “You do realize that this effectively puts an end to our earlier plans, right?”
He looked confused. “It does?”
“She’s on her way over here. She figured it would be best to do this in a place we were both comfortable.”
“This is a little sudden, isn’t it?”
“That’s the way grandmother is. She didn’t have any other plans for the morning, so figured it would be a good time.”
“You’ll want to get dressed then. Not that I mind your current attire, but it might lead to questions that would make you uncomfortable.”
Riley gave him a strange look. “That was on my list of things to do before she gets here.”
“Need any help?” he asked with a roguish grin.
She swatted at him, getting up off the couch. “Not the kind of help you’re offering,” she said walking back to her bedroom.
Krycek sighed and leaned back on the couch. This news had killed his current desire to follow her down the hall and finish what they’d started. He took a deep breath and told himself that there would be another opportunity. At least there was a good reason as to why they couldn’t continue and not some lame excuse.
“Are you coming or not?” she called to him from the bedroom.
“Change your mind?”
She snorted. “Hardly. You might want something a little less grungy. She’ll be here soon, so you might want to get down here.”
He got up and headed into her bedroom. She was waiting for him, still dressed in her pajamas. In her hands, she held a small pile of clothes. “Put these on.”
“Your friend sure left a lot of his things here,” he observed, taking his shirt off.
“I keep asking him to come and get them, but he never does.” Riley shrugged. “I guess it turns out that it’s a good thing. It’s also a good thing that all of my friends are the same size.”
“You have a lot of friends my size?”
“My girlfriends are all different sizes, but strangely enough the few guys I hang out with are all your size and build. I never really thought about it before, but Pete, Wayne, and Derrick are the same. Radically different in looks and taste in clothes, mind, but the same basic shape.”
“Says something about your taste in men.”
“Well, no, not really. As far as Pete goes, yeah, as I practically grew up with him, but Wayne I hated at first in junior high and I met Derrick over the net. Pete knew him from an exchange program he went on and so introduced us in a chat room we used to hang in. When he moved here, we all hooked up and became friends.”
“I see.” He put on the light blue jeans and long sleeved grey shirt. “Just a coincidence then.”
“It’s well known that I have no taste in men. If it weren’t suicidal to do so at this point, I’d introduce you to Alex.”
“Who’s he?”
“She’s my best friend,” she explained. “Alexis, actually, but she prefers Alex.”
“Why is this such a bad thing?”
“Between her, Fred, and Pete, I’d never hear the end of it. They always get on my case when I wind up spending the night with some random guy. The way things are, with the uncertainty as to where this will go, I’d be committing social suicide. It’s hard to explain.”
“Embarrassed?”
She sat down on the edge of her bed. “It’s not like that at all; it’s just that I’d like to wait. You’re only meeting grandmother because of what happened when she called. I just want to be sure about this before I make it public.”
“I can understand that. There’s a lot that we need to talk about, but it looks like it’ll have to wait.”
He bent to kiss her, but the doorbell rang. “She got here fast,” he observed.
“Would you get that while I get some clothes on?”
“Sure,” he said, kissing her on the cheek. He left the room and went out, taking a deep breath before unlocking the door and opening it. On the other side was a woman who looked like she was in her early seventies but still looked fit enough to take him down if necessary.
She scrutinized him. “You would be Alex,” she said politely.
