Chapter Sixteen
It was the early hours of the morning and Carsten was running from the main house down to the Hangar. He had made frantic phone calls to the hangar but no one was answering. It was three in the morning.
Hawke and Dominic had been working non stop for nearly two weeks, repairing the damage to Airwolf’s starboard turbo section. Hardly anyone had emerged from the Hangar during the fornight.
Carsten ran to the Hangar door and started to bang with his fists on it. The November night was making the night air quite crisp as he exhaled hot air it turned to vapour.
Dominic opened the door dressed in his long johns and his red Santini Air hat. He saw it was Carsten.
“What do ya want?” He yawned. “You ever hear of phones?”
“You ever answer the bloody things?” Carsten panted back. “They’ve found Archangel.”
Dominic awoke instantly and shouted. “STRING.” Dominic paused before closing the door. “Any sign of their son?”
Carsten shook his head. “Archangel needs medical attention and then they will debrief him.” Carsten left Dominic.
Hawke strode into the Lodge kitchen, he had just thrown a pair of jeans and a jumper on after working on Airwolf and had ran up to the Lodge. He wasn’t even out of breath as he entered the kitchen. Alfred noted Hawke’s arrival and handed him a coffee straight away. Hawke took the cup and gladly downed a mouthful.
“Thanks Alfred.” Hawke took another mouthful, grateful for the liquid refreshment. “Any more news?”
“I believe information is coming through all the time.” Alfred reported what he knew to Hawke. “Miss Kristien has several laptops set up in the bedroom.”
Hawke looked up through the kitchen door to where the stairs were. Alfred handed him a tray, a refill of coffee for Hawke and a hot chocolate for Kristien. Hawke raised his eyebrow at Alfred, knowing he had no excuse not to go up there to find out the news about his son.
As Hawke left the kitchen Dominic arrived and sat down with Alfred to have a talk.
Hawke entered the bedroom and walked over to where Kristien was laying on the bed. He placed down the cup of hot chocolate for her on her bedside table and then he walked round to his side and placed the coffee down next to his lamp. He looked over at Kristien who was still absorbed in reading everything from the extraction teams that had rescued Archangel a few hours before. Hawke laid down on the bed on top of the duvet and put his head on the pillows.
“Any more news?” Hawke dared to ask.
Kristien shook her head. “Archangel is pretty poorly. The preliminary medical report indicates he will need a few operations to repair the injuries he has sustained whilst the arab extremists have incarcerated him.”
Hawke sighed heavily, he wanted to hope that his son was still alive and well somewhere and had been happily distracted by repairing Airwolf from the whole subject. It had taken over two weeks of concentrated efforts from the FBI, the FIRM, Interpol and the Dubawi Government to gain the information they needed from the trail that had been inadvertently left from the cloned Archangel.
A few things had been said by two different investigators that having the cloned Archangel alive would have helped matters. Kristien’s report into the capture of the cloned Archangel left out a lot of information. However, once the investigators went to the charred remains that was once a barn and the anthropological scientists went in all they could find was the ash of four sets of human remains.
Certainly the Phoenix had blown the place to smitherines but Kristien having got her Ph.D for Anthropology made sure that the barn was heated beyond what was required, to eliminate any trace of what had happened. This also meant that identification was impossible of the child’s remains.
Hawke looked across at Kristien who was finishing reading the reports that had come through. She was sipping on the hot chocolate. Kristien looked tired. Although she was resting in bed, the pregnancy was taking its toll on her. She was not sleeping well due to the pain she was in as Metteo needed more and more room inside of her and so a vicious circle of sleep depravation caused by pain had started.
Alfred was very worried about Kristien. It wasn’t often he worried, but when he did it was usually for a good reason. She had used the time awake to ensure Airwolf was repaired by Hawke and Dominic and kept them on task from her bed via the laptops. Kristien closed up all the laptops bar one and placed it on the bedside table. She slid down the bed a bit more and then tapped her pillows to try and get them comfortable for her head and shoulders. Kristien was dressed in one of Hawke’s shirts, she shifted about trying to get comfortable but nothing was working.
“You okay?” Hawke whispered to her.
“No, I am so tired and I can’t sleep as Metteo want’s more room and I don’t think I have much more room to give.” Kristien rolled on to her back.
“I can give you a massage, it worked last time.” Hawke suggested.
“Hmmmm.” Kristien moved closer to Hawke and laid herself next to him. Hawke rolled himself upright to prevent any pain to himself due to his healing ribs and looked down at Kristien. He waited for her to undo the bottom buttons of the shirt which revealed her twenty eight week bump. He gently took some essential oils and started to make circular movements on the bump.
Soon Kristien was breathing deeply and gently fell asleep.
Thirty minutes later Hawke was woken by Kristien’s stifled cry of pain. He was still holding her.
“Kristie, what is it?” Hawke asked.
“It’s nothing.” Kristien groaned as she looked at the time and realised that only thirty minutes of sleep had happened.
“Maybe, you know it’s time that Metteo was born, what Doctor Parsons said the other day about the C section made sense you know.” Hawke tried to go down the route of Kristien giving birth now she was twenty eight weeks.
“I am not having a C section, already got one of those scars.” Kristien grunted with displeasure at the thought of an operation. “This will probably be my one and only chance to have a baby and I am doing this naturally whether it…..” Kristien stopped herself before saying anything else. “If I was in bloody space this wouldn’t happen.”
“Space?” Hawke’s eyes lit up. “That gives me an idea.”
“No we are not taking the Phoenix up.” Kristien complained.
“There’s more than one place for weightlessness.” Hawke told her and smiled broadly at her.
Hawke carried Kristien in his muscular arms. The automatic doors of the pool area opened and he walked in. The gentle noise of the water and the low lighting gave the place a romantic feel. Further beyond the pool and the hot tubs was another room. Hawke carried Kristien through to this room where a smaller pool was. The wall of heat hit you as soon as you walked in. The hydrotherapy pool was heated to a much higher temperature and Hawke had been using it daily to strengthen his healing ribs up. He placed Kristien at the edge of the pool and allowed her legs to go in. Kristien relaxed as she felt the hot water touch her legs. Kristien smiled as she undid the last remaining buttons on her borrowed shirt and let it slip gently down from her shoulders. Her naked pregnant body looked beautiful in the low light.
“Are you going to help me then?” Kristien invited.
Hawke pulled off his jumper and allowed his jeans to fall to the floor. He slipped gently into the water and made his way to Kristien. He stood up and placed his arms around her. Hawke quietly smiled to himself as he felt her soft skin next to his. This was the first intimacy they had had since the prostitute incident, other than holding hands. Kristien too, seemed to relax just by the touching of their bodies.
Hawke held her closely and walked her over to the slope at the deep end. Kristien had her arms around Hawke’s neck. As he walked down the slope the hot water immersed them both. Kristien’s body started to relax, releasing all of her muscles. Hawke kept his arm under her shoulders, keeping her head above the water, allowing her legs to float out under the water. His other hand went to her pregnant bump where he started to make circular movements on to her bump, allowing everywhere to relax. Kristien closed her eyes and started to enjoy the weightlessness and the once aching and tight muscles all started to relax.
Hawke smiled at Kristien who had finally fallen asleep. Her gentle face was relaxed. Indeed all her body was relaxed, even Metteo had calmed down enough not to wake her.
Kristien awoke gently and looked at Hawke who was still holding her.
“Morning.” Hawke smiled.
Kristien gave a small yawn and she returned the small smile. “How long did I sleep for?” Kristien asked and looked at her hands which looked like they had been in the water for a long time.
“Four hours.” Hawke told her.
“Four? What! You’ve held me for four hours.” Kristien was a little surprised at Hawke’s dedication and the fact she had been asleep for that long without being woken.
“I promised you that you would have this baby, and if you don’t want a C section I will do my best to make sure it doesn’t happen.” Hawke reminded Kristien of his promise to her.
Kristien brought her feet down and gently moved away from Hawke and just swam about, stretching her rested body in the hot water. Hawke moved to the side and was about to get out when Alfred entered quietly and placed a breakfast tray down at the side of the pool together with two towelling robes. Alfred nodded to Hawke and he left as quietly as he came in. Hawke had sat one of the seats on the bottom of the shallow end and he reached for the coffee and drank it as he continued to watch Kristien just float around and swim a little.
Kristien came over to Hawke and straddled his lap and placed her hands around his neck. He could feel her happiness. She was, for the first time in a long time, out of pain. She reached across and picked up the hot chocolate and started to sip it. Hawke absorbed her beauty and the intimacy between them. Kristien looked at her fingers which were quite swollen with the water immersion.
“Hmm I think I need to dry out.” Kristien looked at her fingers.
“Could go in the sauna.” Hawke suggested. Kristien smiled and Hawke picked her up in his arms and walked over to the sauna. Soon Kristien was laid out enjoying the heat. Hawke laid next to her, still holding her hand tenderly.
“Kristie, you said earlier that this is probably your only chance at having a baby.” Hawke began but stalled when he struggled with what he actually wanted to know.
“I shouldn’t have got pregnant in the first place really.” Kristien admitted. “It has been hard staying pregnant this time.” Kristien looked down at her pregnant bump.
“Oh, so you wouldn’t want another one?” Hawke dared to ask.
Kristien looked at Hawke trying to work out why he was asking this question.
“String, when I was pregnant with Bastian, nothing made me happier and if I remember we planned to have at least eight children.” Kristien reminded Hawke of their time at the cabin. Hawke smiled as he fondly remembered the conversation. Hawke and Kristien had made love and Kristien was twenty weeks pregnant. Bastian decided to make his presence known by kicking for over one hour, preventing them from making love again that afternoon, giving Kristien the giggles. Hawke remembered her laughter, the fun they had together, he hadn’t heard Kristien laugh in a very long time.
“But that was then…..what about now?” Hawke asked quietly.
Kristien looked down at her naked pregnant body. “It’s been hard, but I do enjoy being pregnant.” Kristien began.
“Even though you can’t ride.” Hawke wanted to make sure.
“I rode when I carried Bastian.” Kristien corrected him. “String what’s this about?”
Hawke shrugged his shoulders weakly. His face holding on to a pain that would not go away.
“No you don’t get out of it that easily.” Kristien told him firmly and she rolled on to her side and faced Hawke.
Hawke sighed deeply. “We’ve not made love since I….” Hawke paused and his brooding eyes met her inquisitive stance.
“Since you were set up.” Kristien put in.
Hawke’s pained face softened at Kristien’s explanation. Hawke began to speak. “Yeah, I mean not that it’s an issue, the making love I mean, I know the set up was, well is, and I know I hurt you and we’ve not made love since, and I really want to make love to you and have more children, but I don’t want to hurt you as you are in pain, but I wanted….” Hawke was prevented from anymore stumbling as Kristien brushed her lips over his and Kristien allowed her hands to wander over Hawke’s lean and muscular body.
“Apology accepted.” Kristien replied as she kissed Hawke again. Hawke wanted to take Kristien there and then, and he struggled to keep control of his male instincts. He wanted so much to put his hands on her, to caress her breasts, to feel her nipples harden to his tender touch. The heat from the sauna was strangely very pleasant after their time in the hydrotherapy pool.
Kristien gently broke off the kiss. “But you are not forgiven yet.” Kristien told him.
Hawke’s wandering mind stopped in its tracks. “As it should be.” Hawke replied. “I will go and fetch our drinks that Alfred brought over.” Hawke left the sauna, glad to have the break as he needed to relive his male instincts.
Hawke returned five minutes later with the tray that Alfred had left. Kristien had changed position. Hawke could see that she was getting uncomfortable again. Hawke placed the tray down on the bottom bench and then sat behind Kristien and she leaned back on him. Both of her hands searching for his and she brought them forward and placed them on her pregnant bump.
“I am happy though to have more of your babies if my body will allow it.” Kristien finally said to him, answering the pressing question he had burning on his troubled mind.
Hawke smiled at the invitation that he was given for the future.
