(Open in the control room of the Excelsior. Major Perez stands right behind Janet. A few other Marines are behind them. They stand across from the Commander)
Janet: What?
Commander: I said-
Janet: What do you mean you LOST them again?
Commander: We believe Vertag is trying every technique he knows to avoid getting caught by giant forces.
Janet: But he's got JAMIE! You have to find him! NOW!
Commander: We're looking as-
Janet: Looking how? (She turns to walk towards the technician consoles.) What screens are you using? How many satellites do you have out? Did you check for his holster? Call his family? Dial the office? Oh! Call Lessala!
(Perez follows Janet across the room)
Perez: Janet, you have to let them do this.
Janet: No. No, I don't. I don't! They've had years to rescue her. To FIND her! I had to do it! I had to come to this planet and find her. And I did. And those god-DAMNED giants had to-
Perez: Janet! You're losing it!
Janet: I'm FINDING it! I found my sister! I found my twin sister! It took me!
Perez: Actually it took Vertag.
Janet: After I trained him, Damerae! She looks like me. He's conditioned. He'll obey her.
Perez: (sarcastic) Like he obeys you?
Janet: Exactly! And keep her safe. And bring her back. But we have to find him. And hit him with a rolled up newspaper. Violence, that's all they understand.
Perez: Men?
Commander: SID?
Janet: Giants! (pats a tech on the shoulder) Move aside, dear, I need to find my sister. (Tech looks to the Commander.)
Commander: (softly to Perez) I don't want to have to restrain her...
Perez: She just hasn't slept in about four days. I'll take care of this.
Janet: Come on! Up! I won't hurt your console.
Perez: Janet? Lessala wants to see you down in the cargo bay.
Janet: Lessala? She's aboard? She'll...she'll have to wait. I'm sorry, but she has to.
Perez: She says she has important information about Jamie, Janet.
Janet: Oh! Oh, God! What does she know?
Perez: She'll only tell you. I think she knows where Vertag is.
Janet: Of course... Of course. (starts walking towards the exit. Tech and Commander relax. Janet spins around) But don't stop looking for them!
Commander: (Pops tall) Yes, ma'am.
(Follow Janet and Perez through the hatch, down a passageway, into an elevator. Doors shut)
(Cut to another passageway, in front of other elevator doors. Doors open and Perez steps out with Janet in a fireman's carry. Janet's snores are light and cute)
Perez: Just don't drool on my shoulder, sweetheart.
Janet: (mumbles) Naw pwomishes...

(In a small, dingy motel room, Vertag sits by a table. Jamie is spread out, unconscious, on it. She is beside an Earthling Holster and a coffee mug. Vertag is cleaning a pistol. Another one sits on the table close to hand, ready for use.)
(Jamie groans, starts to waken. She sits up suddenly.)
Jamie: You! (looks around) Where am I?
Vertag: A cheap motel room near the fishing docks.
Jamie: What docks?
Vertag: Does it matter?
Jamie: N- No. No, I guess it doesn't. (she stands, looking curiously at the Holster, but keeps turning. ) What's in the mug?
Vertag: Tea. It should be cool enough for you. Janet took it straight, but we've got sugar and-
Jamie: That's fine. (he places a military mess kit down beside her. She takes the mug and dips tea out of the giant mug, sips) Mmm. Thanks. Janet, huh?
Vertag: Yeah. Sorry, we got separated during the escape.
Jamie: Sure you did. Um... I need... (looks around) The little...
Vertag: There's a restroom in the holster.
Jamie: Please. (he lifts her to the top, lowers her in)
(Shift to inside the Holster. The interior has been damaged violently. Electrical panels are scored, punctured, missing.) What happened here?
Vertag: (voice) I kinda tried to disable any radio transmitters that SID might be able to track. The toilet's down a level.
Jamie: Okay. (she descends the little ladder. There's a tiny airline-style toilet. A fold-down sink. And an emergency distress radio bolted to the ceiling) Gasp!
(Cut to outside. Vertag tilts his head towards the holster but doesn't look in.
Vertag: Everything okay?
Jamie: (voice) Fine! Fine!
(he relaxes. Fade out)
(Fade in to a conference room. SID agents in suits (not the Special Assignment suits) surround a conference table. One is Dordell. Tolag stands at one end.)
Tolag: He's to be considered armed, dangerous and in possession of an Earthling that is crucial to our security. Now go find him! (Agents rush out. Dordell stays where he's sitting. Tolag looks questioningly at Dordell) Did...you not hear me?
Dordell: Oh, I heard you. I also heard you the time you told me you had no idea what he or the Earthlings might be after.
Tolag: Security considerations-
Dordell: Save it. If you're not going to level with me, there's no point in me putting time or effort into some bogus search. I can waste time just as easily back in my office getting real work done.
Tolag: You haven't contributed much to catching Vertag.
Dordell: You haven't given me a straight answer yet. My failure is not a reflection of my abilities.
Tolag: Possibly. Possibly. (turns abruptly towards the door) Maybe there is something I can give you. Come on.
(Cut to a dark hallway. Armored doors line the walls. Tolag leads Dordell to one. Opens it. Lessala is inside, handcuffed to a heavy metal chair, gagged)
Dordell: Wow.
Tolag: I believe you two know each other?
Dordell: I thought she escaped with the Earthlings?
Tolag: She delivered them, but the craft was too small to lift her, too. So she stayed to find and help Vertag.
Dordell: Oh? And where was she going to meet him? (he walks into the cell. Fade out)
(Fade in, Excelsior, Janet's stateroom. Janet sleeps on the bed. Perez sits on a chair near the head of the bed. The setting, positions, angles should invoke the scene of Vertag sitting vigil over Janet's dollhouse after she returned)
Janet: (wakes, sits up straight in bed, yells) We have to find them!
Perez: (calmly) We're trying.
Janet: (spins to face Perez) We-! Oh. Um. (glances around the room) Did we...? Well. We made it back?
Perez: The assault craft met us at the backup site, we docked forty three minutes after that.
Janet: And Jamie?
Perez: Still trying to find Vertag. Which liaisons will not do by playing with the menus of sensitive Fleet equipment.
Janet: I... I don't recall anything like that.
Perez: You were kinda spacey towards the end there. (she moves from her chair to the bed and puts an arm around Janet's shoulders. This scene will probably inspire reams of F/F fanfic but it should be played as purely platonic support.) Janet, Jamie is in the safest hands I know that are still on that planet.
Janet: I know but... Wait, who's safer?
Perez: Me. The Colonel. (she pauses thoughfully) Maybe Styles. When she's cornered.
Janet: (laughs) Okay. I agree. But... Oh, we were so close.
Perez: I know. I know. (they sit in companionable silence for a bit) Hey, I can't wait to see you slap Vertag on the nose with a rolled up newspaper.
Janet: Who....? Um, where did that idea come from?
Perez: Let me tell you a story about a liaison and the control room.
Janet; Oh, God.
Perez: It started when you went onto the AC's flight deck and said we had to strafe SID to provide cover for 'the miserable bastard.' Then...(fade out)
(Fade in to the motel room. Jamie sits on a small box and sips tea. Vertag assembles his gun, holsters it. Produces another weapon and starts to clean it.)
Vertag: I know what they told you. But that was so they could use you.
Jamie: God knows I want to believe you, Vertag, but I don't have enough evidence to discriminate between the two stories.
Vertag: I think that was supposed to be Janet's job.
Jamie: They told me you brainwashed her.
Vertag: Well, then I wouldn't hesitate to show her to you.
Jamie: I suppose... Unless you've got her in a pocket over there?
Vertag: Hmm? Oh. (he spreads the coat out on the bed, flat and open. Holds a hand out to Jamie) Want to search it?
Jamie: I...okay. (steps into his hand and he lifts her to the coat. Puts her down by a pocket)
Vertag: That's the pocket I usually carry humans in. (goes back to cleaning his gun, facing the door. Jamie stares for a moment, then crawls into the pocket)
(Cut to the Control Room. Alarms flash on one console)
Tech1: Emergency signal!
Commander: Where's it coming from?
Tech2: A town down the coast from the capital!
Commander: What's the signal?
Tech1: It's... It's from Major Perez, Commander!
Commander: Have her-
(close-up of Tech2 speaking into a microphone)
Tech2: Report to the Control Room.
Perez: (voice) On my way!
Commander: Can we locate it?
Tech1: It's a distress call, ma'am, it's designed to be located.
Tech2: More importantly, can the giants locate it?
Commander: That's, uh, what I meant.
Tech1: Don't know.
Tech2: Can't tell.
Commander: Well, see if there's any activity in the vicinity. And put the assault craft on Launch Ready. Maybe we can get them out before the giants notice.
(Cut to Tolag's office. The giant is doing paperwork, staring at a pad of paper. Finally he shrugs)
Tolag: Aw, what difference does it make. (starts ticking blocks on the paper at random) Execute, release, surveillance, execute, release, surveillance, execute, release, surv-
Intercom voice: Sir! Radio Surveillance reports a human frequency has been activated.
Tolag: Where? In orbit?
Intercom: No, sir. It appears to originate in Cannery City.
Tolag: Perfect. Scramble the response teams.
Intercom: Already in progress, sir! And your car's out front.
Tolag: Good, good, good. Oh, and someone tell Dordell we may not need him any more! (fade out)
(Fade in at the motel room. Jamie comes out of the pocket, hand behind her back. She stares at Vertag. He holsters the weapon he's been cleaning and the one he had at the ready.)
Vertag: Didn't find Janet? (he steps over to the bed, dropping to his knees to loom less menacingly)
Jamie: No. I found this! (she raises a grenade launcher)
Vertag: Huh. The Major must have left that there. So, now what?
Jamie: Now you take me back to SID!
Vertag: Can't do that.
Jamie: Because they'll arrest you? You can just leave me on the sidewalk outside!
Vertag: No, because Janet will kill me.
Jamie: I'll kill you! (waves the grenade launcher)
Vertag: I've shot that thing. It's harder to aim than you might think. And I'm not sure if it's loaded. But I am sure I would rather take a grenade in the chest than disappoint Janet.
Jamie: (sneers) Really?
Vertag: Really. (drops slowly to his knees, hands at his sides) Jamie, your sister is about my best friend. Her politics are insane, but she's brave. Loyal. Absolutely fanatical about reaching her goals.
Jamie: (sniffs) Well. I believe you've met her, now. Except for the politics. She hates politics.
Vertag: Well, she's used whatever she had to to get to this planet, find you and rescue you. And, well, any humans she found on the way. Jamie: Humans? Not...Earthlings?
Vertag: Janet is very insistent on that.
Jamie: Look, I'd like to believe that. To believe you. But...
Vertag: Well, let me tell you about Janet. What she's done here. See if the story holds together?
Jamie: That'll just tell me you're good at making stories.
Vertag: I can't think of anything else. Except taking your weapon away.
Jamie: While I've got it pointed at you?
Vertag: I'm SID, Jamie. I collect armed humans. I met her in my supervisor's office... (fade out)
(Fade in on the Excelsior, in a conference room. Adams and his staff are at the table, with Janet. Commander is at a screen showing an infra-red view of a multi-story hotel.)
Commander: The signal is coming from this room. The place is jammed pack and we're having difficulty distinguishing Vertag. And no idea if Jamie is there.
Janet: And there's a reason we're not going down to rescue them, I take it?
Perez: We don't know what he's doing. If he has Jamie at a friend's house, while he leads SID on a goose chase, it could ruin everything.
Brown: What about this distress signal? What's it saying?
Commander: Nothing. It seems like someone turned on the transmitter and left it.
Roth: (to Janet) Could Vertag have done that?
Janet: (shakes her head) I don't see how. He'd need a special tool to reach it.
Styles: Or, if he ripped the wall off of the holster...
Janet: Oh. I suppose.
Commander: So we still have no idea what's going on.
Adams: Any response from SID?
Commander: We're detecting a lot of traffic on their frequencies, but haven't isolated any codes for Vertag, Earthlings or Jamie.
Janet: And Lessala?
Commander: There... We may have identified her code name in some traffic, but it stopped two days ago.
Janet: Well. Okay. I... I guess we're still waiting for Vertag's signal.
Styles: Whatever that will be.
Brown: Well, as a wise woman once said, there's no chance we'll miss it.
(Cut to Tolag's command car screaming down a highway. Tolag in the back on a radio with the voice from his intercom)
Tolag: I'll be there in a matter of minutes.
Radio: Yes, sir. All reports are that he hasn't moved.
Tolag: Good.
Radio: Um...
Tolag: What?
Radio: Well, it's Inspector Dordell, sir. He's still interrogating the secretary.
Tolag: Did you tell him we don't need him?
Radio: Yes, sir. He says he'll keep on with this until everything goes to ash. Sir. (Tolag fumes but doesn't reply. Fade out.)
(Fade in to the motel room. Vertag still kneels at the foot of the bed, Jamie still holds the grenade launcher aimed at him. She has a small smile on her face. Vertag swings a doubled fist)
Vertag: Humans should not fight humans. (swings again) Humans shouldn't hurt humans! (swings again) Giants are the enemy! (swings once more)
Jamie: Then what happened?
Vertag: The big ugly brute slid down to the floor, apologizing all the way. I think. His lips were pretty mangled by then. Your sister swings a mean fist when she's angry.
Jamie: And what were you doing?
Vertag: I was protecting her back with a wooden club.
Jamie: So Janet counts on you for safety?
Vertag: Oh, she didn't even know it was me. And, really, she's stronger than I am.
Jamie: (sneers) Right.
Vertag: Where it counts, she is. She's called me a wuss a time or two.
Jamie: Wuss?
Vertag: I... I don't like... You know, talking about certain things.
Jamie: Like what?
Vertag: Babies. Babies coming out of the baby place.
Jamie: That bothers you? Human birth bothers you? I'd think it was like watching lab rats breed.
Vertag: I'm too fond of Janet to see you guys as anything less than vertically challenged people.
Jamie: Sweet. You are a wuss, but a sweet wuss. (they share a smile. She shakes her head and lifts the launcher with resolve) But you still kidnapped me by shoving me in a pocket!
Vertag: I've done far worse to people of my own species, when I thought it was justified.
Jamie: Like?
Vertag: Well, let me tell you what Janet and I did to Millious. And, you'll appreciate, how Janet made me look like an idiot.
Jamie: Ooooh. Idiot? Is there popcorn?
Vertag: You ARE twin sisters. Okay, so we break into this secret organization's bunker...(fade out)
(Fade in to the conference room. Brown is running the smartboard. The motel's neighborhood is shown with a number of people and vehicles marked with a red circle. Brown taps the screen and another red circle appears around a pedestrian)
Brown: And that one's guarding the parking lot across the street.
Adams: So they have him surrounded.
Janet: Them. They have them surrounded. And we're not doing anything.
Perez: Janet, we don't know for sure if Jamie is in there.
Janet: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Our paranoid giant might trust someone else enough to leave the most dangerous human mind on the planet in their hands.
Perez: Well, if he is running a decoy, he wouldn't dare expose Jamie to the danger.
Styles: I dunno. If Jamie's like Janet, here, she might have talked her way into the line of fire for some reason only members of the Crane family would understand. (Janet lifts her head up to stare at Styles.)
Janet: Why...thank you, Styles.
Styles: (shrugs) No problem.
Janet: So she might be there.
Adams: But we're not going to commit people until we know for sure.
Janet: I'm sure.
Adams: So am I.
Janet: Then....?
Adams: I just can't prove it to the Admiral. (Janet slumps.)
Janet: Well....thanks, anyway. For believing.
Perez: We all believe in Crane stupidity, Janet. (Janet gives a half-smile)(Fade out)
(Fade in on a giant street corner. Tolag steps from his car, looks at the various agents around him, in suits and disguises. He nods. Everyone converges on the motel)
(Cut to Vertag's room)
Vertag: So, I say it's too dangerous. Janet says 'up yours, put me in there.'
Jamie: Literally?
Vertag: No, she's angry, but not that angry. The only swear I ever hear from her is 'miserable bastard.'
Jamie: And that's always you?
Vertag: Yeah, it's... Did you hear something?
(Cut to the conference room)
Brown: They're converging on his room.
Adams: And he's just sitting there.
(Cut to a hallway. Tolag and six agents step to either side of a door. One holds a detector of some kind. He aims it at the door and nods. Tolag nods to another agent. That man kicks the door open, all enter, guns drawn)
(Cut to the motel room. It is clealy empty. Agents sweep in, look quickly around. Tolag finds the Earthling Holster on the table. Picks it up. Man with detector waves it around the Holster, nods)
Tolag: It's a decoy. Again. (smashes the holster on the table.) He's probably halfway across the continent, meeting with the Shuttle right now. And our best teams are HERE! CRAP! (he storms for the doorway) And to top it all off, Dordell is right. Again. (from the hallway he orders the men:) Okay. Let's get out of here.
Agent: Sir? Should we search the room?
Tolag: (already walking away) Why? To see if he's hiding under the bed?
(Cut to the Conference room)
Perez: What is he doing?
Brown: It looks like he's hiding under the bed.
(Cut to the motel room)
(Last agent out closes the door roughly. Damage to the latch prevents it from shutting all the way.)
(Camera pans to the floor beside the bed. Vertag slides out from under the mattress. He has a gun in one hand and Jamie in another.)
(he glances around, then scoots to the wall to lean against it, below the window. )
Vertag: (whisper) We'll give them a few minutes to collect everyone, then slip out.
Jamie: I've never seen anyone move that fast.
Vertag: (whisper) Sorry. I usually have more time to prepare. Um...thank you for not screaming.
Jamie: I almost did. But... Tolag said there's really a Fleet?
Vertag: (whisper) He did.
Jamie: So it's all real?
Vertag: (whisper) Yes. I'm not the one that's lied to you, Jamie.
Jamie: Would you?
Vertag: (whisper) If I had a good reason, yeah. But I haven't.
Jamie: And Janet?
Vertag: (whisper) Waiting for you. (There's a moment of silence) Anything you want to tell me about the Holster?
Jamie: Uh... You missed a radio.
Vertag: (whisper) I see.
Jamie: I just...
Vertag: (whisper) You did what you thought you had to do. Even if you might piss me off or put me, or both of us in danger.
Jamie: Don't think of it like that!
Vertag: (whisper) Why not? (smiles) It's what Janet would have done. (Jamie smiles, too)
(Cut to the conference room)
Brown: How could they have missed him?
Adams: They think it's a decoy.
Perez: How fast can we get six or seven Assault Craft down to the planet?
Brown: To do what?
Adams: Decoys. To convince them this decoy was really a decoy.
Brown: They're all flight ready. We can have them go low over unpopulated areas, hover, then return.
Adams: Take care of that. (Brown runs out of the room)
Janet: I guess you guys are right, then.
Perez: What? About what?
Janet: Well, if he did have my sister with him, he'd have been a lot more paranoid. (waves at the screen where the Vertag figure crawls out a window and down the side of the building.) Not taking chances like this.
