Bobby, Dean, and Astiratu sat in Bobby’s library listening to Sam’s screams. Bobby poured them each a glass of whiskey. Dean looked at Astirau inside Liam. “You know, I generally prefer it if you keep yourself separate from the man I love. It’s been four days I’ve looked at you like that.”
“Sorry,” Astiratu shrugged. “Would you rather I left the body rot and die? I don’t know how long this gonna take, or even if it will work, and this body still has to eat and drink and the like.”
Dean swallowed hard. “Sorry, this is just really difficult, and I could use my ignorant sweetheart to hold.”
“I know it’s hard,” Astiratu nodded. “Not easy for me either, and I’ve known the guy a lot less time. Someone very high owes me one big mother of all favors that I’ve been saving for a little over two thousand years, and I’m actually thinking about using it on this. That should tell you how much I care.”
“Oh?” Dean raised an eyebrow. “And who owes you this giant favor?”
“Jesus.”
Dean’s eyebrows furrowed. “Why would He owe you a favor?”
“I can’t tell you exactly.”
“Not supposed to has never stopped you before.”
Astiratu chuckled. “My keeping my trap shut on this is exactly why he owes me the favor. What I can tell you is while he was on earth he needed a personal assistant, and he chose me.”
Dean looked at him like he was nuts. “Really? You?”
“Who better? Like I told that kid, He’s nothing like what the bible says He is. He didn’t want some stuffy angel following Him around like a lap dog. He wanted a friend with a personality who would do things for Him because they wanted to. That story I told you about being a Roman and having piss and stones thrown at me, He came along and stopped it, rescued me. My personality then was much the same as Liam’s, haven’t changed much. He took me home, drew me a bath, and gave me clean clothes. He gave me what I wanted, much like you did. And ah, those damn eyes… So yeah, even though I was clueless to the truth as usual and thought He was nuts, I followed Him around and did what He needed me to do without question. Like the bible says, He would do little faith tests now and again, and I was the only one who passed with flying colors every single time. I jumped off a foggy cliff for that man. What He knew that I didn’t at the time was there was a ledge about seven feet down. I just knew He wouldn’t ask me to do anything that was really going to hurt me. But, of course, whoever wrote the gospel completely cut me out. The fact that the whiny little full of himself Peter got mentioned and I didn’t, oh yeah, that pissed me off to no end.”
“Wait,” Dean looked confused. “When we were visiting Chuck and Cas was talking to you about being remembered he said something about homosexuality. You didn’t bang Jesus did you?”
Astiratu smirked. “Maybe I did. Hey, He was on earth in a human body with human needs. As long as I was willing nobody that matters cares. Trust me, I was willing.”
“And because of all that and something you can’t mention He owes you a giant favor?”
“Yes. When I died from that life and saw Him again He told me for my loyal service and unconditional companionship He would give me one and only one no holds barred whatever the fuck I want favor. The only limit on it is it can’t royally fuck up God’s major plan.”
“And you think He can fix whatever is wrong with Sam?”
“If anyone has the juice...”
“Then what the fuck are you waiting for? Call in that favor!”
Astiratu sighed. “I’m still thinking. Dean, this… This is major shit we’re talking, and I only get one for all eternity.” Dean made a choking motion with his hands. “Be frustrated all you want. The fact that I love you so much, that I love Sam, and Natalie, and John… That’s why I’m even considering burning this one time favor on Sam. You’re not in my shoes facing a long line of unforeseeable crap. This is really not an easy decision to make here.”
The phone rang and Bobby sighed and answered. “Hello. Suck dirt and die, Rufus. You call me again, I'll kill you,” he said as he slammed the phone down. The phone rang again. “I'm busy, you son of a bitch. This better be important.”
After a quick conversation Bobby hung up and sighed. “The news ain't good. Alaska. Fifteen man fishing crew all stricken blind, cause unknown. New York, teacher goes postal, locks the door, kills exactly sixty six kids. All this in a single day. There's no doubt about it. They're all seals. Breaking. Fast.”
“How many are left?” Dean asked.
“Who knows? Can't be many. Where the hell are your angel pals?” he looked at Astiratu.
Astiratu shrugged. “Hell if I know. Because of reasons I get blindfolded and tossed down here to grope around in the dark. I usually find what I’m supposed to, but it ain’t what I call fun.”
Dean grabbed Astiratu’s arm. “Come on...” Dean took him outside. “Call Cas here now. We need answers.”
Astiratu nodded and closed his eyes in concentration. Castiel appeared a few minutes later. “What do you want?” Castiel asked.
“First off, you were gonna tell me something. I really want to know what right now,” Dean demanded.
“Nothing of import,” Castiel shrugged.
Dean’s eyes widened. “You got ass reamed in heaven but it was not of import?”
“Dean, I can't. I'm sorry. Get to the reason you really called me. It's about Sam, right?”
“What’s happening with him?” Dean asked worried. “What can we do? Did Astiratu cause this?”
“He didn’t help it. Astiratu, the evil inside him, the power in your blood feeds it. You did have a good hunch. The good in you did suppress the evil for a while, but as what is in him grew stronger...”
“My good just wasn’t strong enough,” Astiratu sighed. “My favor would fix it though, wouldn’t it?”
Castiel nodded. “There is no power higher aside from God Himself. The procedure would not be a pleasant one for Sam, but the Prince, He could do it if you asked. Since I do not possess human feelings I cannot fully understand the position you are in Astiratu, but I still do not envy it.”
“Cas, did Astiratu really screw Jesus?” Dean asked out of curiosity.
Castiel smirked. “The demons sometimes refer to him as the Prince’s whore. What do you think?”
“I think slut is a much more fitting term,” Astiratu chuckled. “Whores get paid.”
Dean’s features scrunched up. “I’m not even Christian and that is so wrong...”
“I don’t follow,” Castiel blinked. “No laws were broken. Two beings in human bodies joined together of their own free will over and over...”
“I think it’s the way that particular being is painted in the books,” Astiratu tried to explain. “I mean, it’s complete biased crap, but hey… Since when do people who write down the history ever get it completely right? Dean, sweetie, the bible is sanitized crap. Very much like Chuck cut me out because he didn’t think readers would like the gay stuff, the juicy fun parts of biblical history were cut because the masses would only swallow a sugar pill. You really think billions of people would put blind faith in a being who was very human at the time and when angered would throw bricks and rocks at people?”
Dean swallowed and nodded. “People would rather swallow pretty lies than believe the ugly truth. I see it myself all the time in my line of work. You and I, is that a pretty lie?”
“No,” Astiratu shook his head. “My human self really loves you. I really love you. I can prove it.” He took Dean’s hand and placed it on his chest again while looking into Dean’s eyes.
Dean took a deep breath and nodded. “I really love you too. But what do we do about Sam?”
“I can’t give you the answers you seek,” Castiel shook his head. “Except that the only real alternative to killing him may be to call in that favor.”
“Thanks Cas,” Astiratu sighed. “Real great help there.”
“I sense that was sarcasm, but still you’re welcome,” Castiel said and disappeared.
They went back inside. “Get any answers?” Bobby asked.
“None that I really liked,” Dean answered. “Astiratu, I don’t mean to put pressure on you, but please...”
They all paused and listened to the quiet. “That's a little too much nothing,” Bobby said as they rushed down to the basement.
Bobby opened the little window in the door and Sam was having a seizure on the floor. “What if he's faking?” Dean looked to his companions, not sure what to do.
Then Sam was picked up and slammed against the wall by an invisible force. “That ain't faking,” Bobby opened the door. “Astiratu, stay back!” They ran in and pinned Sam down. “We're gonna have to tie him down for his own safety before he has another fit.”
“Yeah,” Den nodded. “Let's just get it over with.”
They chained him to the cot and left him again. Bobby sat down and sighed. “I'm sorry. I can't bite my tongue any longer. We're killing him keeping him locked up down there. This cold turkey thing isn't working. If he doesn't get what he needs soon, Sam's not gonna last much longer.”
“No,” Dean shook his head. “I'm not giving him blood. I won't do it.”
“And if he dies?” Bobby cocked an eyebrow.
“Then at least he dies human!” Dean shouted. “I would die for him in a second, but I won't let him do this to himself. I can't. I guess I found my line. I won't let my brother turn into a monster.”
Astiratu sighed and headed for the basement door. “Where are you going?” Bobby asked.
“To check on the patient. Don’t worry, I’m not giving him more blood. Food maybe. It’s going on five days.”
“You better fucking not,” Dean growled.
Astiratu looked at him. “I can’t lie to you, remember?”
“Then be very careful. He’s a detoxing heroin addict, and you’re a walking bag of heroin.”
“He’s chained down, how dangerous could it be?”
Astiratu entered the chamber and looked at Sam who was lying still on the cot. “You come to let me go?” Sam asked hopefully. “Give me more blood?”
“No,” Astiratu shook his head. “Just thought you might be hungry,” he motioned to the cookie in his hand. “It has been a couple of days. They left you with water, but nothing to eat.”
Sam pulled hard at the restraints. “You know what I want, what I really need. You used to give it to me, why not now?”
“Sam,” Astiratu sighed. “I played with fire and I got us both burned. I’m sorry. What’s in you, I should’ve left well enough alone. I really am sorry, but no more. Here,” he put the cookie to Sam’s mouth.
Sam turned his head and put his nose to Astiratu’s wrist, inhaling deeply. “Astiratu, please...” Sam begged.
“Anything but that. Ask anything of me but that.” Sam screamed and ripped himself free of the restraints, lunging at Astiratu. “Help!” Astiratu cried out as Sam grabbed him in a vice like grip stronger than any human should have. Astiratu kneed him in the groin, but it had no effect. The half angel was pinned to the wall and Sam savagely bit him in the neck and started drinking.
Bobby and Dean rushed down, a shotgun in Bobby’s hand. “Sam, let him go!” Bobby shouted, but Sam kept drinking like a man dying of thirst. Dean charged in and punched Sam hard, but it made no impact.
Astiratu continued to squirm under him trying to push him off, but he was growing weaker by the second. Sam eventually let go, an aqua blue light flashing in his eyes. Bobby pointed the gun at him. “Sam, only place you’re going is back on that cot.”
“No,” Sam growled.
“Damn it, boy.”
“You won't shoot me, Bobby.”
“We're trying to help you, Sam.”
Sam walked right up to Bobby and placed the barrel of the gun right to his chest point blank. “Then shoot.”
A few seconds later Sam flung Bobby aside like nothing and walked out. “Are you okay?” Dean asked Astiratu, examining the bite wound.
Astiratu nodded. “I think I know how my vampire victims felt, but I think I’ll live with a little rest.”
Dean helped him and Bobby up. “Okay, let’s get that cleaned and patched, then we track Sam down.”
“Won’t be easy,” Bobby sighed. “He took enough blood to be high on some serious power.”
“Believe me, I know,” Astirau swooned a little. “I think I’ve made a decision. I’m calling in that favor, but you’re still going to want to find him. Getting in to see who I’m going to see can take a while, even for me.”
Dean helped Astiratu upstairs and the wound was thoroughly cleaned and bandaged before Astiratu was laid out on the couch and he slipped from his body. “Okay, how do we find Sam?” Bobby asked. “You know him best.”
“No, I don’t,” Dean shook his head. “Not anymore. The thing inside him is hopped up on angel power and has completely taken over. My best guess though? He’s gone after Lilith.”
Dean blinked and he was suddenly in a bright white room with a table that had a tray of burgers and bucket of cold beer. “What the…?”
“Hello, Dean,” Castiel appeared in the corner.
“Hello, Dean. You're looking fit,” Zachariah appeared beside him with a smile.
“Where the hell am I?” Dean asked.
“Call it a green room of sorts,” Zachariah answered. “We're closing in on the grand finale here. We want to keep you safe before showtime.”
“What about Astiratu? Where is he? Don’t you want to keep him safe too?”
“The whore went running to his Prince. I can’t touch him in that waiting room. He’d be a bit difficult to handle right now anyway considering he just got played like a fiddle.”
“What the fuck does that mean?” Dean shouted.
Zachariah chuckled. “It means that even though he doesn’t know it yet, he did exactly what we wanted him to as always.”
“No,” Dean shook his head. “You wanted him to kill Sam, and he didn’t do that.”
“Dean, when you know someone for nearly eight thousand years, well, even a crazy bitch like that becomes very predictable. You and Sam, you’re everything he’s ever wanted wrapped up in a neat little bow. Not since his time on earth with the Prince has he ever been so happy. I knew he would never actually kill Sam, but I knew the order would make him curious. All I had to do was leave a nice trail of breadcrumbs for him to follow when he thought he was being sneaky. He’s always been drawn to power and loves to play with fire.”
Dean clenched his jaw. “So, you’re telling me the big plan was always for Sam to wind up like this? Why?”
“Dean, relax. Try a burger. They're your favorite from that seaside shack in Delaware. You were eleven, I think.”
“I'm not hungry,” Dean growled. “I want to know what the game plan is.”
“Let us worry about that. We want you focused, relaxed.”
“Well, I'm about to be pissed and leaving, so start talking, Chuckles.”
Zachariah sighed. “All the seals have fallen. Except one.”
“That's an impressive score,” Dean snorted. “Astiratu is supposed to be your big stick. Why didn’t you use him better?”
“I just told you, he served his purpose well.”
“Will someone tell me what the hell is going on here?”
“All in good time.”
Dean was suddenly alone and he kicked a table leg. A little while later Castiel appeared again. “You asked to see me?”
Dean sighed. “Did you know about this major manipulation going on?”
Castiel took a deep breath and nodded. “That’s what I was going to tell you when I found out. I swear, I didn’t know before then.”
“You said Astiratu has been a good friend to you, saved your life when no one else would, you just let him get treated like a monkey on a leash?”
“He has always been a monkey on a leash that gets thrown the occasional treat to keep him happy enough to not take the leash and strangle his handler with it.”
“And that makes it okay?”
“Dean, we were all played to a point.”
“Yeah, well, I need you to take me to see Sam.”
“I don't think that's wise.”
“Well, I didn't ask you for your opinion. Listen, I'm gonna do whatever you mooks want, okay? I just need to tie up this one thing. Five minutes, that's all I need.”
“No.”
“What do you mean, no? Are you saying that I'm trapped here?”
“For the time being,” Castiel said as he disappeared again.
Dean growled and picked up a large statue, banging the wall with it to make a hole, which quickly repaired itself. “Quit hurling feces like a howler monkey, would you?” Zachariah appeared. “It's unbecoming.”
“Let me out of here.”
“Like I told you; too dangerous out there. Demons on the prowl.”
“You know, I am so sick of your crap riddles and your smug, fat face. What the hell is going on, huh? Why can't I see Sam? And how am I gonna ice Lilith?”
“You're not going to ice Lilith. Lilith's going to break the final seal. Fait accompli at this point. Train's left the station.”
Realization hit Dean. “You don't want to stop it, do you?”
“Nope. Never did. The end is nigh. The apocalypse is coming, kiddo, to a theater near you.”
“What was all that crap about saving seals?”
“Our grunts on the ground, we couldn't just tell them the whole truth. We'd have a full scale rebellion on our hands. I mean, think about it. Would we really let sixty five seals get broken unless senior management wanted it that way?”
“Astiratu could’ve stopped it, couldn’t he?”
Zachariah chuckled. “Given the proper tools and information he could’ve put the beat down of the century on all those demons. He’s done it before. But we decided to dangle you and your brother in front of him instead. The apocalypse. Poor name, bad marketing, puts people off. We like our chances in this. When our side wins, and we will, it's paradise on earth. Now, what's not to like about that?”
“What happens to all the people during your little pissing contest?”
“Well, you can't make an omelet without cracking a few eggs. In this case, truckloads of eggs, but you get the picture. Look, it happens. This isn't the first planetary enema we've delivered. Your boy Astiratu has even done some of the heavy lifting before. He wasn’t very pleasant to be around afterward, but… Look, if it makes you feel any better, once the Prince learns what I’ve done my head will probably end up on a pike. The only question becomes will the whore get in to see Him in time to put a stop to things?”
Dean was left for a little while again before Castiel appeared. “What are you gonna do to Sam?” Dean asked.
“Nothing. He's gonna do it to himself.”
“What's that supposed to mean?” Castiel looked away. “Oh, right, right. Got to toe the company line. Why are you here, Cas?”
“I just wanted to say, I'm sorry it ended like this.”
“Sorry? It's Armageddon, Cas. You need a bigger word than sorry."
“Try to understand, this is long foretold. This is your-”
Destiny? Don't give me that holy crap. Destiny, God's plan... It's all a bunch of lies, you poor, stupid son of a bitch! It's just a way for your bosses to keep me and keep you in line! You know what's real? People, families, that's real. And you're gonna watch them all burn?”
“What is so worth saving? I see nothing but pain here. I see inside you. I see your guilt, your anger, confusion. In paradise, all is forgiven. You'll be at peace. Even with Sam.”
“When I am surrounded by my family I am at peace. A wise pain in the ass I happen to love snuggling with once told me there can be no true joy without pain. This is simple, Cas! No more crap about being a good soldier. There is a right and there is a wrong here, and you know it.”
“What would you have me do?” Castiel asked.
“Get me to Sam. We can stop this before it's too late.” Castiel turned away with a sigh and disappeared. “You soulless son of a bitch!” Dean shouted after him.
Castiel appeared again minutes later and pressed Dean to the wall covering his mouth. “This is for an old friend, and hopefully a new one.”
Dean nodded as he watched Castiel slice his own arm and started drawing the angel banishing symbol on the wall. Zachariah appeared. “Castiel! Would you mind explaining just what the hell you're doing?”
Castiel finished the drawing and slammed the center of it, sending Zachariah away in a bright flash. “He won't be gone long. We have to find Sam now.”
“Where is he?” Dean asked.
“I don't know. But I know who does. We have to stop him, Dean, from killing Lilith. Lilith is the final seal. She dies, the end begins.”
They appeared in Chuck’s house. “Where’s Sam?” Dean demanded.
“He’s… He’s at St. Mary’s.”
“St. Mary's? What is that, a convent?” Dean asked confused.
“Yeah, but you guys aren't supposed to be there. You're not in this story.”
“Yeah, well…,” Castiel chuckled. “I’m pulling a page from the crazy bitch book and making it up as I go along.”
Dean suddenly appeared in an empty part of the convent and started searching for Sam. He found his brother just in time to see him with Lilith pinned to an altar, a white light coming from him. “Stop!” Dean shouted, but it was too late. Lilith fell over dead.
Sam turned to his brother in triumph. “Dean, I did it! I stopped her! What the hell?” He looked down and blood was flowing from Lilith and forming a pattern.
“You just broke the last seal, you idiot!”
“What?” Sam looked confused.
“Look,” Dean sighed. “We all got played big time. We gotta get out of here.”
The symbol on the floor formed and a bright white light started shining out of it. In the blink of an eye Dean was back in Bobby’s house and Astiratu stirred before another bright light shone down from the ceiling and the house started shaking. “Got your favor did you?” Dean asked. “Nice timing, you’re a few seconds too late.”
Astiratu sighed. “Don’t yell at me. I got through pretty fast considering. Now, no matter what you hear, don’t interrupt Him.”
Just then they heard Sam scream in agony. “What the hell is going on down there?” Bobby asked.
“A demon-ectomy,” Astiratu answered. “Half his soul is currently being ripped out him. I was warned it wouldn’t be pleasant or pretty.”
“So, what, he’s only going to have half a soul?” Dean asked.
“For a little while. It will regenerate.”
For about two hours they just sat and listened to the screaming that was worse than when he had been detoxing. Then a Middle Eastern man in a white robe appeared before them. “It is done, my friend. All traces of demon have been removed.”
“Thank you,” Astiratu nodded. “How’s the patient?”
“He will survive, but his soul is very raw at the moment from being ripped in half. He has been through quite an ordeal and needs to rest for a little while.”
“What are we going to do about this whole Lucifer being let loose thing?”
“I will do what I can on my end. Here on earth, train your friends well and do what you do best. Oh, and I have decided something. Since you used your favor on something so selfless, I’m going to give you another.”
“Really?” Astiratu looked surprised.
“Really. Have I ever lied to you? But I warn you, do not take it lightly. I like you, so I may keep giving them to you, and I may not, but the moment I feel I am being taken advantage of they will stop, understand me?”
“Yes, I understand,” Astiratu nodded.
“Good.” The man approached Astiratu and kissed his forehead. “I do love you, you crazy ass bitch.”
Astiratu chuckled. “Look who’s calling the kettle black.”
Both men had a good laugh at that. Then the man turned to Dean. “You have been given a rare gift. Do what I can’t and take care of him. Treasure him in the way he deserves.”
“I will,” Dean nodded.
The man disappeared and Bobby blinked. “Was that who I think it was?”
“Yeah, it was,” Astiratu answered.
They headed down to the basement to find Sam on the cot in the panic room. His eyes were wide staring up at the ceiling and his body was shaking. “Sam, you okay?” Dean put a hand on his shoulder.
“The pain...” Sam mumbled.
“I’m sorry,” Astiratu stroked his hair. “But it was the only way, and it’s over now. Here...” He poured a little water into a glass and helped Sam sit up. “Drink a little.” Sam swallowed the water gratefully and took a few deep breaths. “Think we can get some food into you now?”
Sam nodded and slowly moved to sit up. “Easy, kid,” Bobby helped him up. “You just had major surgery on your soul.”
Sam moved unsteady on his feet up to the kitchen and sat at the table. Bobby made them burgers and they ate, not really talking much so they wouldn’t stress Sam. Then they laid him on the couch and he fell asleep.
“We need a game plan,” Dean looked to Astiratu and Bobby.
Astiratu sighed. “One, we can’t do much of anything until Sam heals. Two, Lucifer needs to make a move before I can figure out how to counter it. For now, I am needed on the front lines.” His body went limp and Dean reached out to catch him before he hit the floor.
Dean carried his body up to bed and tucked him in, kissing his forehead. “Kick some serious demon ass, Babe.”
