Dean paused outside the bedroom door, his hand on the knob. When he opened it Liam was lying in bed still awake. “Still afraid to sleep?” he asked.
“More now than before.”
“Why’s that?” Dean asked as he sat on the bed and stroked Liam’s hair.
“I’m kept in the dark about a lot, but I can see the way you’ve been looking at me. I’ve also got a knot in my stomach that I can’t shake.”
Dean leaned in to kiss Liam tenderly. “Everything is gonna be all right, you hear me? Some shit is about to hit the fan, but you are one tough little bastard. You survived your father and things most people can’t fathom. Nothing is gonna happen to you.”
Dean crawled into the bed and pulled Liam close. Liam pressed his feet to Dean’s legs. “Whoa,” Dean jumped a little. “Your toes are cold.”
Liam smiled and kissed him. “I know, I was hoping you could warm them up for me.”
Liam rolled on top of Dean and started passionately kissing him. Dean pulled back to look at him. “Are you sure? A minute ago you were-”
Dean was cut off by another kiss and Liam reached for the lube. He squeezed out a bunch and started slathering it onto Dean’s cock. Dean’s eyes closed and he moaned at the touch. When Dean was fully hard Liam raised himself up and sank down so that Dean was inside him. He wrapped his arms around Dean’s neck and gazed into his eyes. “I love you,” he whispered before starting to slide up and down and nibble on Dean’s neck.
“I love you too,” Dean breathed and reached to stroke Liam’s cock with one hand and lightly stroke his back with another.
Liam whimpered and claimed Dean’s mouth again as he was rolled over and Dean started pounding into him. The blond’s hands moved to Dean’s back and dug into his skin. Liam closed his eyes and started panting heavily as he turned his head from side to side.
Dean grabbed his face and held it still. “Look at me,” Dean demanded and Liam opened his eyes again. Dean gazed deep into those gray eyes as he gasped for air and ground against his lover’s special bundle of nerves. Then he lowered his head to attack Liam’s throat just under his jaw.
Liam whimpered in pleasure and tensed just before he came with a loud cry. Dean kissed him again just as his own climax hit. Then he collapsed down beside Liam and pulled him close. “No matter what happens, I love you more than I ever thought I could love anyone,” he whispered. A small smile appeared on his lips when he saw Liam was asleep.
When he woke he saw red eyes looking at him. “Let’s get this show on the road, shall we?”
Dean sat up. “You’re not even going to let your human self wake up and have breakfast? He was afraid to sleep for this very reason.”
Astiratu shrugged. “I gave him a very good last memory, sex with you then falling asleep in your arms.”
“Whoa, wait, last?” Dean glared at the half angel. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“Chances are I’m going to have to somersault into that cage with him inside me. I don’t think I’m coming back.”
“And you… you wait to tell me this now?” Dean was livid. “I changed my mind, we’re not doing this!”
“Yeah, we are. Dean, you got along for how many years without me.”
“And it sucked! I was a mess. Don’t you get it, you fill the hole. What am I supposed to do without you?”
“Find a woman, which we both know suits you better anyway.”
“Shut up about that. I want you damn it! If that slowly turns me into a flaming fairy I don’t care.”
Astiratu patted his cheek. “We can’t always have what we want.” He got out of bed and put some pants on to go to the bathroom.
Downstairs Natalie had chocolate chip pancakes with blueberry syrup waiting. Astiratu looked at the plate. “You did go to the trouble, and I suppose I probably should.” he said before he sat down to eat.
“Plan’s off,” Dean said as he came down.
“Why?” Sam asked, looking confused.
“There’s a good chance he’s gonna lose me so he’s got his panties up his ass,” Astiratu explained.
Sam looked to his brother. “Dean, what did you think was going to happen?”
“I don’t know, but not that!”
Astiratu patted the seat next to him. “Sit with me and eat.”
“Not hungry,” Dean frowned and sat beside him.
“I’m not gone yet, so enjoy what time we have. Grieve later, then move on.”
Dean sighed and ate one pancake before calling Bobby. “Lucifer is in Detroit. Bobby and Cas are meeting us there.”
They got in the car and started driving. “Dean, it’s gonna be okay,” Sam tried to assure him.
“The hell it is,” Dean grumbled.
Bobby and Castiel met them in downtown Detroit. “Lots of demons, probably dozens in that building over there,” Bobby pointed across the street. Bobby looked to Astiratu. “Knowing you has been one crazy ride. You fight that son of a bitch with everything you got.”
“I will,” Astiratu nodded.
He started heading toward the building and Dean followed. “What, you think I’m letting you go in there alone?”
Astiratu sighed and entered the building. “Oh, Lucy!” he called out. Two demons approached and their heads exploded. “Don’t put your filthy hands on me.”
They found Lucifer on the second floor. “Hey, guys. So nice of you to drop in. Sorry if it's a bit chilly. Most people think I burn hot. It's actually quite the opposite.”
“Well, I'll alert the media,” Dean snorted.
Help me understand something, guys. I mean, stomping through my front door is a tad suicidal, don't you think? Even for you, sunshine. You’re smarter than that.”
“Maybe the last time we met your words made an impact,” Astiratu looked him in the eye. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and I’ve decided to give you what you want.”
“You’re serious?” Lucifer looked a little surprised.
“I am, but you know my terms. You don’t lay a finger on my people.”
“Come on, sunshine, nothing is ever that easy with you. Can we please drop the telenovela? I know you have the rings.”
“I have no idea what you're talking about,” Astiratu didn’t even look rattled.
“The Horsemen's rings? The magic keys to my cage? Ring a bell? Come on, sunshine. I've haven’t lied to you in a very long time. You could at least pay me the same respect. It's okay. I'm not mad. You wanna go a round inside your noggin. I like the idea. Your arrogance says you can beat me and jump in that hole. Mine says I can beat you. I’m very curious to see who actually wins. So, sweetheart, what’s it gonna be?”
“Fine, yes.” Astiratu answered. “As long as you still agree to my conditions.”
Dean had to shield his eyes from the bright flash of light. Then Liam’s body was on the ground convulsing violently. It lasted several minutes before the body went still and his eyes opened. “Astiratu, please tell me that’s you in there,” Dean begged.
“Oh, he’s in here,” Lucifer chuckled. “That was one prize fight, but I won. Only barely, but still.” Lucifer got up and disappeared.
Dean fell the floor and started sobbing. Sam and Bobby came in to check on him after a while. “So, what happened?” Bobby asked.
“He knew about the rings,” Dean struggled to breathe through the tears. “Astiratu said yes anyway and Lucifer won.”
“Oh, my god,” Sam ran a hand through his hair and knelt down beside Dean to hug him.
Astiratu was tied to a very old looking four poster bed by both wrists and ankles in a very beautiful looking room. Lucifer appeared in front of him. “You are still a hellcat,” Lucifer chuckled. “I haven’t had a fight like that in I can’t remember how long. That tenacity is why I love you. You heard me, I wasn’t lying when I said I still loved you.”
“I loved you too, but you pissed all over that,” Astiratu growled.
Lucifer sat on the bed and stroked Astiratu’s cheek. “Don’t be like that. I really do want to reunite.”
“Don’t touch me! Let me go and we’ll go again.”
“Afraid I can’t do that. The deal was one round, and I just barely managed to win. By the way, very nice body you got.”
Sam, Dean, Bobby, and Castiel were watching the news on a storefront TV. “It's starting,” Castiel said.
“Yeah, you think, genius?” Dean snapped at him.
“You don't have to be mean.”
“So, what do we do now?” Sam asked.
Castiel sighed. “I suggest we imbibe copious quantities of alcohol and just wait for the inevitable blast wave.”
“Yeah, swell,” Dean glared at him. “How do we stop it?”
“We don't,” Castiel answered. “Lucifer will meet Michael on the chosen field, and the battle of Armageddon begins.”
“Okay, well, where's this chosen field?” Sam asked.
“I don't know.”
“Well, there's got to be something that we can do,” Dean insisted.
“I'm sorry, Dean. This is over,” Castiel frowned.
The brothers looked to Bobby who shook his head. “There was never much hope to begin with. I don't know what to do.”
Sam grabbed Dean by the shoulders when it looked like he was going to collapse again. “Dean, there’s always a way. We just gotta find it. I’m not giving up, and neither should you.”
“Chuck!” Dean’s eyes lit up and he picked up his phone. After a short conversation he hung up. “Chuck says it’s going down tomorrow high noon at a cemetery in Lawrence.”
Sam nodded and they headed for the car. “Now, wait a minute!” Bobby called after them. “Don’t you two go doing something stupid.”
“Bobby, I can’t just sit here and do nothing!” Dean shouted. “I’ve gotta go try to reach my man.”
“If you couldn't reach him here, you're certainly not gonna be able to on the battlefield,” Castiel said.
Dean sighed. “Well, if we've already lost, I guess I got nothing to lose, right?”
Castiel took a step toward him. “I just want you to understand, the only thing that you're gonna see out there is Michael killing your lover.”
“Well, then I ain't gonna let him die alone,” Dean said as he got into the car.
They drove to the cemetery at noon and saw what looked like Adam and Liam circling each other. Dean got out of the car with a grin. “Howdy, boys. Sorry. Am I interrupting something? Hey. We need to talk.”
Lucifer looked at Dean. “Dean. Even for you, this is a whole new mountain of stupid.”
“I'm not talking to you. I'm talking to Astiratu.”
Michael looked irritated. “You're no longer the vessel, Dean. You got no right to be here.”
“I need five minutes with him,” Dean insisted.
Michael sneered. “You little maggot. You are no longer a part of this story!”
“Hey, ass butt!” Castiel shouted. He was with Bobby and holding a flaming bottle which he threw at Michael and the archangel screamed and disappeared in flames. Then the angel turned to Dean. “He'll be back, and upset, but you got your five minutes.”
Lucifer glared. “Castiel. Did you just Molotov my brother with holy fire?”
“Uh, no...” Castiel looked a nervous.
“No one dicks with Michael but me.” Lucifer snapped his fingers but nothing happened.
“Feeling a little impotent today?” Dean chuckled.
“I don’t think that body, or who’s in it, is cooperating quite the way he hoped,” Sam commented.
Lucifer growled. “You know I tried to be nice because I promised, but you are such a pain in my ass!” He grabbed Dean by the shirt and threw him into the windshield of the car. Then he dragged him off and punched him. Dean fell against the hood spitting blood. Lucifer pulled back to hit Dean again but his arm froze. “Oh no...” Lucifer looked a little scared.
Bobby shook his head. “You just broke a promise and done flipped the piss off switch. Wouldn’t wanna be in your shoes right now.”
Lucifer fell to the ground again, the body convulsing worse than the first time, lightning bolts shooting along the skin. “Who wants to bet Lucifer is getting torn a new one,” Sam chuckled.
The body went still and the eyes turned red again. “The rings, hurry!” Astiratu shouted.
Dean threw them on the ground and said the chant. A hole opened up in the ground and Astiratu went to stand on the edge. Michael returned. “It's not gonna end this way! Step back!”
Astiratu glared at him. “Fuck you!” he growled before a bright light shot out of his mouth and was sucked down the hole.
The hole closed up and Astiratu collapsed. Castiel blinked. “He just kicked an archangel out of himself. He really was pissed. I mean, he only exhibits that kind of strength when seriously enraged.”
Michael glared at them. “You four meddled in something you really shouldn’t have.”
Bobby boldly looked him in the eye. “You’ve got two options. You can go bitch to someone who cares, or you can piss off your half brother even more. He just threw Lucifer into the ropes and down the hole for hurting his partner. If you touch his people what do you think he’s gonna do to you?”
Michael grumbled but disappeared. Dean ran to Astiratu and knelt beside him. “Please tell me you’re okay.”
Gray eyes opened and looked up at him. “What just happened?”
“Liam?” Dean smiled down at him. “Oh, thank god! Babe, something really good just happened. Our angel friend beat up Lucifer and sent him packing. How do you feel?”
“Really angry, but really tired.”
Dean hugged Liam tight and a few tears ran down his cheeks. “Okay, we’re gonna put you in the car so you can rest and we’re gonna go home.”
“Why are you crying?” Liam asked.
“Babe, they’re happy tears. It was touch and go for a minute, but the important thing is you’re okay.”
“No offense to Bobby, but can I go home with you three?” Castiel asked.
“I guess,” Sam shrugged. “It’s Natalie’s house really, but she’s not opposed to guests I don’t think.”
Both Sam and Dean hugged Bobby and they got Liam into the car and started driving home. Dean looked to his brother. “Dude, we just saved the world. We are so taking a vacation.”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “But Astiratu did the heavy lifting again, so maybe he should choose where we go. We’ll have to ask him later because he’s out cold right now.”
“He may have done the heavy lifting, but if we hadn’t shown up to get him good and fluffed...”
“It’s a good thing Lucifer isn’t good at keeping promises,” Castiel said from the backseat.
“Yeah,” Dean agreed. “But at least it’s over now.”
