Voight sat in his chair, his mind racing with the events of the afternoon with Erin. He couldn't understand his behavior or why he had snapped at her.
The gray-haired sergeant shook his head, frustrated by his inability to keep Henley imprisoned. He despised whoever had bailed her out.
"Hank, Benson is here," Al announced, drawing the sergeant's attention. "Allow her in," Voight said, his demeanor shifting. He was relieved to see Benson, hoping she might have an answer for his actions, particularly after dismissing Erin until further notice.
Benson approached Voight's office and entered. Voight greeted her, offering her a seat.
"Olivia, what brings you here?" Voight asked.
"I came to ask about Erin's suspension," Benson replied, her eyes searching his.
Voight sighed. "It's a complicated matter," he said.
Benson nodded. "I have time. I took vacation days to come here."
"I didn't technically fire her," Voight clarified. "Crowley told her she couldn't return without her permission."
"And you didn't challenge it?" Benson asked, surprised.
Voight shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe I did it to protect Erin."
"Protect Erin?" Benson asked, confused. "Is she in trouble?" Benson had grown to care for Erin and considered her a close friend.
"Yeah, the guy who kidnapped and raped Erin four weeks ago," Voight said, shaking his head. "He got bail, and I'm worried he'll try to hurt her again."
Benson nodded. "So you're doing this to protect her?" she asked. "Does Erin know about this guy being free?"
"I don't think so," Voight said, shaking his head. "She asked me about it when she came in this afternoon, but I told her he was still in prison. She's too smart to believe that, but I want to keep it from her for as long as I can.”
Benson nodded. "Have you tried explaining it to her?" she asked.
Voight was about to reply when Crowley walked into the office. "Crowley?" Voight raised an eyebrow.
"Sergeant Voight," Crowley greeted curtly and turned to Benson. "Can I speak to him alone, please?" she asked.
Voight shook his head. "You can talk to me with her here," he said.
Crowley nodded. "As you wish," she said with a shrug. Voight noticed the shared looks between Al and Antonio, wondering if they were the ones who had called Crowley up.
"Detective Olinsky just called me about something about me texting you, telling you to fire Lindsay," Crowley said, shutting the door. "What is that about?"
Voight looked at her confused. "You didn't text me?" he asked, wondering if someone had gotten her phone.
"No, because I would either call or even come here to talk to you. You know this," Crowley said.
“True,” Voight said, showing Crowley the texts on his phone. “But you did text me.”
Crowley, puzzled, checked her phone but found no messages. “That's odd,” she remarked.
Benson joined the conversation. “Something's amiss. Maybe your phone was hacked.”
“Possibly,” Voight agreed.
A knock on the door interrupted them. “Come in,” Voight said. Jamie peeked in. “I have something to share. Ms. Crowley, you should hear it too.”
Crowley nodded. “Come in and close the door,” she ordered.
Jamie entered. “What's going on?” Voight inquired.
Jamie hesitated, guilt tugging at her. “It's about Henley,” she said, drawing the attention of the three detectives.
"Go on," said Voight, allowing the blonde woman to share her knowledge. Jamie shifted nervously, explaining that she had acted solely under Henley's orders to protect her daughter.
Jamie continued, "That's why Jay separated him from Erin. Henley posed as you, claiming Jay was responsible for Erin's rape."
"You blamed him for not accompanying Erin to speak with Tawny," Jamie added, her voice trembling. "At the time, I was unaware of Henley's identity. He threatened my two-year-old daughter."
Voight listened attentively as Jamie spoke. "I'm sorry, Hank," Jamie said, looking Voight in the eye. "I would never intentionally harm my sister."
"We'll discuss this later, Jamie," Voight said, rising from his chair. He turned to Crowley. "My apologies for the inconvenience, Crowley. I must contact Erin.”
Crowley nodded. "Glad we can settle this," she said. Turning to Jamie, she added, "I'll see you later." With that, she left the office.
Jamie watched the elder woman leave, then glanced at Jay, who gave her a small nod. Voight grabbed his phone and called Erin.
Benson approached Jamie. "Everything will be fine. You did it for your daughter," she said.
Jamie nodded. "No, answer," Voight barked, slamming his phone down before exiting the office. "Antonio, Al, you're coming with me to Erin's apartment."
"What about me?" Jay asked, now understanding the situation. "You can come to Jamie; you stay here with Atwater and Ruzek. If Erin returns, let us know," Voight instructed.
"Okay," said Jamie as she sat at her desk, nodding. Kevin nodded in response. "Call if anything's amiss," he stated.
Adam nodded resolutely. "We're here for you, rain or shine!" he promised.
Voight nodded and descended the stairs with Antonio, Al, Jay, and Benson. Benson had decided to join them despite being on vacation, willing to delay her break if someone she held dear was in danger.
Jamie sighed as she watched Voight and the others leave. She glanced at Kevin, who gave her a sympathetic smile. "Everything will be okay," he mouthed. Jamie couldn't help but smile back at his kind gesture.
"No matter what, Voight won't let anything happen to Erin or Elizabeth," Kevin assured her. Jamie nodded, knowing that the burly detective was right. Voight would protect those he cared for, especially a child.
