Episode 19: Back to Sanctuary
Back at the house, Honor stood staring out the window in the front entranceway. The rain had stopped two hours ago and there was still no sign of either Claudia or Adam. She was worried and it showed in every fiber of her body. Jesse and Brennan watched her from a safe distance.
“So, do you want to try and go over there?” Brennan asked Jesse, eyeing Honor carefully.
“We might be involved, but there’s no way I’m going to put myself in a position where she can toss me down the hallway the way she did to you.”
Brennan rubbed the back of his head. “Oh come on. It didn’t hurt that much.”
Jesse rolled his eyes. “So you just put an ice pack on it for the good of your health.”
“That’s right,” he replied defensively.
He shook his head and looked back at Honor, furrowing his brow in concern. “I’m worried about her, Brennan.”
“You wouldn’t be standing here if you weren’t. We’re all worried about her, Adam, and even Claudia. Do you have any idea what’s going on with those two?”
Jesse shook his head. “I have no clue. We really don’t know that much about Adam and Claudia is even more unknown than he is.”
“Well, let’s just hope that she doesn’t go back on her word not to kill Adam,” Brennan sighed. “I’m going to go sit down. You coming?”
“No, I’m going to try and talk to her.”
“Your funeral,” he said, clapping Jesse on the shoulder before walking off.
Jesse watched Honor for another minute and walked over, putting a hand on her shoulder. She jumped and turned around.
“Jesse! Don’t scare me like that!” she scolded.
“Sorry. How are you doing?”
She shook her head and turned back to the window. “I’ve been better, but I’ve also been worse.”
“I’m sure they’re both fine.”
“If they’re fine, then where are they? I can understand Claudia not being back, but Adam should have come back by now. I doubt that he could keep pace with her.”
He wrapped his arms around her. “I’m going to be the optimist here. What if they went for a walk down her jogging path together? They do seem to be friends again after all.”
“I’m not really sure how likely that is, but that’s the most positive thing that’s come up about this.” She turned to face him, eyes wide. “You’re sure they’re fine?”
“Positive. In fact, why don’t you see for yourself?” He spun her back around to look out the window. Walking up the front path to the house were Adam and Claudia, both wearing clothes there were a little on the damp side. Honor broke free of his arms and rushed out the door across the damp ground towards Claudia. Jesse followed her out.
“You’re ok!” Honor squealed, flying into the arms of her long time friend.
“There was doubt about this?” Claudia asked, her lip twitching slightly in amusement.
“Some of us were afraid that you’d gone and killed Adam,” Jesse admitted. “I’m relieved to see that our fears were unfounded.”
“I’m in no danger, Jesse,” Adam assured him. “Let’s get inside. I’m getting tired of being out in the cold.”
Claudia snickered a little as they went back inside. Adam poked her in the ribs in response and ducked into the house before she could retaliate. She glared in his direction, but there was a happy glint in her eyes. Neither Honor nor Jesse could figure this out. Inside, Claudia excused herself and went up to her room to change.
“That wasn’t very fair of her,” Adam said. “I don’t have a change of clothes here.”
“We really should be getting back to Sanctuary, Adam,” Emma said, running a hand through her hair. “No offense, Honor.”
“None taken,” she replied. “That’s your home. You all need to go back and change. You have lives that were interrupted by all of this.”
“We don’t really mind, Honor,” Adam told her. “It was worth it in the end.”
Jesse smiled at her. “Before we go, could we get your number so that we can get a hold of you? I’m sure Adam would like to be able to contact Claudia every so often.”
“I’d appreciate you not interfering in this, Jesse,” Adam told him, trying to keep his dignity in tact.
“So are you two a thing or what?” Brennan asked.
“We haven’t figured that out yet. We’re friends for now.”
“That’s it?” Emma asked. “Just friends?”
“Sorry to disappoint you, but yes.”
“Well, at least we know that Honor and Jess are a thing,” Shalimar teased.
“Hey!” Honor exclaimed indignantly.
“We haven’t talked about that either,” Jesse admitted, glaring at Shalimar. “I didn’t want to bring it up just yet.”
“Oh, sorry,” she said sheepishly.
“It’s ok, Shalimar,” Honor told the older woman. “It needs to be talked about, but right now, I think we should all just relax. You guys need to get back to Sanctuary and change if nothing else.” She paused. “I’ll be right back.”
Jesse watched her head into the kitchen. He turned to Shalimar. “Thanks a lot, Shal. I hadn’t brought it up because of the thing with Adam and Claudia. I wanted to see how that would resolve before doing anything that could put them into contact as a result of any kind of relationship between the two of us. Now that I see that you they’re friends again, I’d planned on doing so privately, but this kind of blows my plans.”
“I’m really, really sorry, Jesse. If I’d known-“
“You wouldn’t have said anything,” he finished for her. “I know, I know. It doesn’t make it all that much better.”
“Jesse, could you come in here for a minute?” Honor called to him from the kitchen. “I could use a hand in here.”
“Coming!” he replied, giving Shal a final cold look before heading off.
Honor paced back and forth in the kitchen, waiting for Jesse to come in. She heard footsteps behind her and turned to face him. He looked really upset. She shook her head, closed the door, and sat down on the counter.
“Don’t you dare be upset at Shalimar,” she started. “She was only teasing.”
“She could have picked a better subject or a better way of phrasing that,” he grumped.
“She had no way of knowing that we hadn’t discussed where we’re going with this. Cut her some slack.”
He gave her a questioning look. “You don’t seem upset about this at all.”
“What’s upsetting me is the way you flipped out on her like that. It was completely unnecessary.”
“What about that was unnecessary?”
“All of it,” she said bluntly. “I heard that bit of conversation, incidentally. Your heart was in the right place. I know how you feel about me and I know where those feelings generally lead to and I’m ok with that.”
Jesse sat down on a chair, not trusting his legs to keep him up. “You are?”
She nodded. “I like you, Jesse. I like you a lot. You’re kind and considerate and gentle. You make me feel safe and comfortable whenever I’m around you. You’re also interested in me, in my life and my music. This is all completely new to me, but I like it.”
He stared at her. “Well, there goes all of my careful planning and plotting out the window.”
“Let me guess,” she said, eyes sparkling. “You were going to take me out somewhere, possibly to a nice restaurant and bring it up then. Am I close?”
“You’re bang on. How did you figure that out?”
She shrugged. “I watch way too many chick flicks. Claudia always used to tell me that it was a bad habit of mine, but I enjoy them.”
“I don’t see what’s so wrong with it.”
“It’s bad when you’ve never had a boyfriend and have no idea what any of that stuff you see in the movies actually feels like. It’s worse when it becomes something of an obsession.” She blushed. “My teenage years were no picnic.”
He stood up and walked towards her, putting his hands on her thighs. “I want to make that all seem like a bad dream. I won’t make it go away. It’s a part of who you are and I like who you are.” He rubbed her legs gently. “So you’re ok with hanging with me for an indefinite period of time?”
“I’m willing to give it a shot. That is, if you are.”
In reply, he reached forward and kissed her, putting his hand on her cheek. “I’d like that very much,” he whispered.
Claudia joined Adam, Brennan, Shalimar and Emma down in the hallway, wearing a tight pair of jeans, a loose button up shirt and a long open knitted duster. Adam was leaning one arm against the far wall. Emma and Shalimar had sat down on the floor and Brennan was sitting in a chair he’d swiped from the dinning room. She frowned.
“Where did Jesse and Honor go?”
“Into the kitchen,” Emma told her. “She said she needed his help with something.”
“It’s all taken care of now,” Honor said as she and Jesse joined them in the hallway. “It’s all good now.” She gave Shalimar a meaningful glance and the blond relaxed.
“That’s a relief,” Shalimar said, standing up. She looked at Jesse. “Are we cool?”
“Yeah, we’re cool. I’ll tell you about it later,” he said to her questioning look.
“So we’re all good to go?” Brennan looked up at them. “I really need to get out of these clothes.”
“You guys head out to the Helix,” Adam replied. “I’ll be along in a minute.”
Brennan raced out the door followed by Emma and Shalimar who were laughing at their friend. Jesse squeezed Honor’s hand, whispering something in her ear and left after kissing her on the cheek. Honor headed up the stairs to her room, leaving Adam and Claudia alone in the hallway.
“Well, now that the younger ones are gone, we have a few moments alone,” he said, taking her hands.
“I can’t stick around long.”
“I’m not going to let you stick around long,” she pointed out. “I have things to do. Now that you’ve gone and turned my entire existence upside down, the least you can do is give me some space to sort things out before we go any further.”
“I’m never sure when you’re teasing me or being serious.”
She punched him in the shoulder. “I’m serious, idiot! I have lectures to prepare for the next couple days, a few term papers to grade, and a final exam to finish preparing. I’m way behind on things and I need to be alone for a while.”
“I see. When would be a good time to call?”
“Truthfully? In a couple of days. Friday might be the best time, actually.”
“How about untruthfully?”
She took a step forward into his arms. “Untruthfully, you should stay here, but if you stayed, you’d only distract me and I’d never get anything done. This would be incredibly bad for my career.”
“We’ll talk about this later as we’re a little short on time here. I’ll call you on Friday, then, if that’s ok with you.”
She nodded, pulling back. “That sounds great.”
“Good.” He squeezed her hands and let go. “I’ll talk to you later then. Good luck on your work.”
“Thanks. I’m going to need it.”
Adam turned and left the house, closing the door behind him. Claudia watched the door for a while before sighing and heading back up the stairs to her room. She sat down at her desk and got to work on her term papers.
After having a shower and putting on a fresh change of clothes, Jesse sat down on the edge of his bed grinning like an idiot. It was still only midmorning, but it was already pretty impossible to ruin the day. Admittedly, things hadn’t gone the way he’d planned, but they’d gone the way he’d hoped, and that was the best thing he could have asked for.
He picked up the sheet of paper he’d set on his desk before tossing his old clothes into the laundry bin. There were two numbers written on it in Honor’s curvy handwriting. The first was her home number and the second was her cell number just in case he couldn’t reach her. She’d told him to give the house number to Adam, so he copied it down onto a small piece of paper and headed out of his room, bumping into Emma.
“Do you know where Adam is?” he asked.
“I think he’s in the lab,” she said, yawning. “If he’s not there, he’d probably be in his room.”
“Thanks Emma.” He headed towards the lab. Inside, Adam was hunched over a microscope. “Hey, Adam. I’ve got something for you.”
The older man looked up. “For me?”
Jesse waved the piece of paper at him. “Claudia’s phone number. I thought you might want it before I forgot to get it to you.”
Adam turned back to the microscope. “Just set it down somewhere. I’ll get to it eventually.”
“I thought you’d be a little more enthusiastic about it,” Jesse admitted as he walked over to set the piece of paper down on the table beside Adam.
“I’m busy working on something to try and help Honor,” he replied. “She seems stable for the moment, but as is the case with you mutants that could change at any moment. I’d rather have something ready before that happens.”
“I appreciate this, Adam. It would really suck to get involved with someone only to have her die on me.”
“You’re all living on borrowed time. I want to make that time last as long as I can. Besides,” Adam smiled. “You two are incredibly cute together.”
“I don’t tease you about Claudia, so I’d like the same back from you,” he grumped.
“Sorry. I couldn’t resist.”
“Are you having any luck?”
“Some. I think I might be close. I’ve never dealt with a psionic molecular before. The change in her genes from the last treatment I gave her and now is quite remarkable. It’s not impossible, just difficult.”
“You’ll let me know when you have something?”
Adam nodded and moved over to the table containing some test tubes. “If you like, yes. Thanks for the phone number.”
“No problem. I’ll let you get back to work now.”
Jesse walked out of the lab and stood out in the hallway, leaning his back against the wall with his hands in his pockets. He had no idea what to do now. He wanted to call Honor, but it was too soon for that. After some debate, he headed for the kitchen to see if there was anything to eat.
