File 19: Complications
Krycek let her in. “And you would be Riley’s grandmother.”
She sat down on the couch, inviting him to join her. Tentatively, he sat down on the other side of the couch. “Oh, don’t be shy, dear, I don’t bite; unlike my granddaughter.” He looked up, startled, and she chuckled pleasantly. “I can see the teeth marks on your neck. You’ll want to keep an eye on those teeth of hers. So. You’re Alex Krycek.”
“That’s me.”
She looked at his arms. “You certainly don’t look like you have a prosthesis.”
“That’s kind of a long story.”
“Come closer and let me have a look at you.” He complied, scooting a little closer. She put her hands on his face and turned his head to get a better look at him. “Well, I can understand how that image could get stuck in her head even without the influence from the moon. You’re a good looking young man.”
“Now, grandmother, we don’t want him to get a swelled head from that,” Riley said, joining them. She was wearing a pair of loose fitting cream colored jeans and a white tank top.
“You could have wound up with someone much less pleasant to look at,” Sheena reminded her. “Fortunately, he’s quite attractive.”
“You’re making him uncomfortable.”
“It’s alright, Riley. I’ve been though worse.”
“Worse than someone almost four times your age finding you as attractive as she does?”
“Four times?”
“Grandmother Hunter is ninety five years old.”
Krycek stared at the elderly woman. “I didn’t think you women lived that long. You don’t look a day over seventy.”
“I retired when my daughter was in her twenties, thus putting me out of any danger to my person. She was a good deal more talented than I, so rather than stay active and risk my life further, I stepped aside.”
“Even though it meant putting her mother’s life at risk?”
“Life for a Hunter is always a risk. There was no reason for me to continue when a more suitable Hunter was ready and willing to take up our family’s blade. The loss of my daughter still hurts after all these years. No one should have to outlive their child.”
“I’ll give you this, though, Riley. This is one of the strangest situations I’ve been in.”
“It’s only going to get stranger from here on in, Alex,” Sheena told him. “Hunters aren’t easy women to be with.”
“You don’t need to tell me twice.”
She nodded thoughtfully. “You look like a reasonably intelligent young man. I only hope that there’s more to you than your looks and that you treat her with the respect she needs. I wouldn’t put up with the ignorance and disrespect in her grandfather or in her father, so I certainly won’t tolerate it in you.”
“You have my word, Mrs. Hunter,” Krycek said solemnly. “I would never do anything to hurt her.”
She smiled and stood up. “See to it that you don’t. She’s not very forgiving of such things, you know. I’ll leave you two alone now.” Sheena walked up to Riley and made a ninety-degree angle with her arm. Riley mimicked the gesture with the opposite arm and they clasped hands. “Keep safe, young Hunter. Keep your heart and mind open. I’m glad for you. I never would have thought to see this day.”
“I’ll do my best, grandmother. Take care of yourself.” Riley kissed her grandmother on the cheek and opened the door to let her out. With the old woman gone, she closed the door and leaned her back against it.
“That wasn’t so bad,” Krycek commented, getting up and walking towards her.
“You got lucky. She likes you.”
He tilted his head, looking down at her. “I was under the impression that this had never happened before.”
“It hasn’t; however, I have friends that she doesn’t like.”
Krycek pulled her into his arms, wrapping them tightly around her. “It’s nice to know that I have her permission to be with you.”
“It’s not her permission that you need to be worrying about, Alyosha,” she said, faking a Russian accent.
“Mmm. And what is it that I need to be worrying about?”
She leaned her head back to look at him. “Whether or not you’ll get to touch me again.”
“Beg your pardon?” he asked, startled.
“You heard me,” she said, continuing to use the fake accent.
“And what’s that supposed to mean?”
“Now that I’m dressed, I have things to do so that we can get this whole mess with your employers cleared up.”
“Your choice of words is still throwing me for a loop here. What made you use ‘again’?”
“If this goes wrong, one of us is going to wind up dead.”
That sobered him up. “That’s not comforting, Riley.”
“It wasn’t supposed to be. It’s a reality check.” She was using her normal voice again. “I don’t know how this will turn out, but I don’t want you to have any illusions about it. If we both survive, then we’ll talk. Until then, things are best the way they are.”
He nodded reluctantly. “I see. Casual, it is, then.”
“Please understand, Alex. It’s not that I don’t like you. I’m starting to warm up to you. Again. I’ve seen friends get involved in things like this before and seen how badly it can end if it goes too far too fast. This is a far riskier situation than any of those with a lot more at stake.”
“What do you mean, again?”
“You remember the first time you were here?”
“Clearly.”
“That’s what I meant.”
“You neglected to mention that before.”
“I didn’t like you before,” she reminded him. “Between the lying and my own personality quirk, I really didn’t like you at all. No sense denying that.”
“I have one more question before you take off to do things.” He took a deep breath. “I went to see Lorne for advice. He mentioned that you’d been by and had sung. He told me that you had a picture of me stuck in your head, but he wouldn’t tell me what. Your grandmother reminded me of it. What image was it? How were you seeing me?”
Riley smiled and put on her shoes, grabbing her car keys. “If all goes well, I’ll tell you later tonight. Now, are you going to get your shoes on so I can take you back to your motel or do you just want to stay here? I can assure you that there's very little to do here.”
“I’ll come with you, then. All my things are at the motel anyways.”
They drove back to the motel with just her car stereo for background noise. Neither said anything until a song came on that clicked something else in Krycek’s mind. Where has my heart gone/ Trapped in the eyes of a stranger/ I want to go back to/ Believing in everything.
“Hey, Riley, is this the song you sang at Caritas?”
“Let me guess, Lorne told you?”
“He mentioned these words, yes.”
She sighed and shook her head. “Yes, it is.”
“I’d like to hear you sing sometime.”
“I’ve already sung to you; you just don’t remember.”
“When was this?” he asked, surprised.
“After I cracked you on the head with the lamp.”
“That’s hardly fair,” he grumped. “There’s no way I could have remembered that.”
“And this is supposed to be my fault?”
“Well, no, but I’d like to hear your voice.”
“I’m flattered, but no.”
Krycek sighed and leaned back on the headrest. “What if I sang for you first?”
“You sing, Alex?” she asked, surprised.
“Not often and not for just anyone.”
“Well, that’s a surprise.”
“There’s a lot more to me than people think, you know.” He tried to keep the hurt from his voice, but failed.
Without taking her eyes off the road, she reached over and patted his thigh gently. “Do try and remember that I only met you, what, not quite a week ago. I don’t know very much about you. All I knew was that you were in possession of a y-chromosome and as such, I didn’t like you.”
“That’s fair enough, I guess, given the circumstances. So what do you say?”
“To what?”
“Why don’t you go and do what you need to do and meet me back at the motel later. I’ll take you out to dinner, somewhere nice. After dinner, we can go back to the motel or your place and I’ll sing to you.”
Riley sighed as she pulled into the motel parking lot and put the car in park. “That sounds really nice, but I don’t know-“
He turned and grabbed her face, planting a lingering kiss on her lips. When he let her back up for air he said, “Please Riley. Something tells me that you’re going to need to relax after today.”
“I have to hunt tonight.”
“Oh.” He pulled away, looking sullen.
“This is exactly why we don’t often form relationships. It always comes down to having to make a choice between the man and the calling.”
“I’m not asking you to choose. If I ever do, you have every right to leave. It’s unfair to force anyone to make that kind of decision. All I’m asking is for some time together and a chance to take you some place nice. It doesn’t have to be an all night thing. I only want a couple hours in the early evening. That should give you plenty of time to hunt.”
“You’re also operating on the assumption that what I need to do will be done before the early evening.”
“What time do you think would be good? I’m flexible.” He took her hands into his. “I’ll do anything.”
She nodded. “If you’ll indeed do anything, you’ll let go of me and let me think about it. If I decide to take you up on it, I’ll let you know.”
Reluctantly, he agreed. “That’s reasonable. It’s better than a flat out refusal at least. Are you fussy about food?”
“As long as it isn’t fish, I don’t really have a problem.”
“Alright then. I’ll get out of your hair now.” He gave her a quick peck on the cheek and got out of the car. “I hope I’ll see you later,” he said as he closed the door.
Riley waited until he’d gone inside before heading off. She had a lot to think about. In less than twenty-four hours, her entire life had been turned upside down and, while she felt physically better than she had in a very long time, it was her mental state that was the most worrying. If things continued going the way they were, she would wind up accepting Krycek as a part of her life and that scared her, but a part of her mind wasn’t bothered at all by it. Admittedly, that was the part of her mind that was entirely controlled by her natural female instincts, the part that made her sweat when she thought about him. The part she had no control over. Not this month.
She shook her head and turned up her radio. This was no time to think about something that might not even happen. Everything was up in the air. She took a deep breath and forced herself to keep her mind on the tasks at hand and not on Krycek’s vivid green eyes or on his bare chest.
Crown Palace Hotel
Scully’s room
11:33 am
Mulder and Scully sat in silence, thinking over the events of the last few days. Neither of them had seen anything that would indicate that Riley had been out doing her thing. It had been three days since they’d seen or heard from her. Mulder’s repeated calls to the studio told them that she hadn’t been in yet. In other words, the city was very quiet. Both were at a loss as to what to do now.
Mulder stood up. “That’s it, Scully, I can’t take this anymore.”
“Where are you going, Mulder?”
“To find Riley,” he replied, opening the door.
“You don’t even know where to start looking,” she said, getting up. “How do you expect to find her?”
“I have to try, Scully. I need to talk to her.”
“I’ll come with you.”
“Alone,” he added.
“I don’t think that’s such a good idea based on what happened the last time the two of you were alone.”
“I promise I won’t pounce her unless she wants me to,” he said calmly. “I’ve seen what she can do with that sword first hand. The last thing I want is to be on the wrong end of that thing the way Krycek was.”
“You’re sure you don’t need me to come?”
“Quite. Relax, Scully, it’ll be fine. Nothing’s going to happen.”
She sighed, staring at the door as her partner left, closing it behind him. “If you say so, Mulder.”
Hours of fruitless searching later, Mulder wandered down into Caritas, the last place on his list of places to look. It was empty save for Lorne and another person sitting at a table with him. The second person was hidden by a tall plant. They spoke in low tones. Mulder cleared his throat and walked up to them.
“What brings you here, Agent Mulder?” he asked, standing up.
“I’m looking for someone and this is that last place I know of to look. Apparently, she’s not here.”
“Let me guess. Riley?”
“How did you know?”
“Everyone comes here looking for her for some reason. I keep telling people I don’t know where she lives.”
“No, but you’re her friend.”
“That’s an odd word to use, but yes, even though it’s kind of hard to be friends with someone like her.”
“A demon hunter.”
Lorne looked surprised. “How do you know about that?”
“It’s a long story.”
The person behind the plant stood up. “It’s a story he already knows.” Riley walked out and clapped Lorne on the shoulder. “Don’t worry about it.”
“I’ve been looking for you,” Mulder said, his eyes drinking in the sight of her. With her loose jeans and tank top, she looked like a regular girl and not the deadly hunter he now knew her to be.
She folded her arms and tilted her head off to the side. “So I hear. What do you want?”
“I just want to talk to you. Krycek’s arrival at the cathedral spoiled my last chance to do so.”
“What makes you think I would be even remotely interested in doing so?”
“I won’t touch you unless you invite me to do so,” he promised. “Besides, Lorne’s here. I much prefer to pounce women in private.”
“Fine, but I don’t have a lot of time to spare.” She sat down at the table, gesturing for him to join her. “What do you want?”
“My partner and I were curious about the bodies being left behind. If you Hunters have been doing what you do for any length of time, why are the bodies only showing up now? What’s going on?”
“Ah, well, the problem with hunting in big cities and heavily populated areas is that there’s a very high chance of being interrupted. This often means that when you come across one of the demon species that don’t dissolve instantaneously or close to it, the chances of being able to dispose of the corpse before someone comes by are quite slim.”
“But you do this anyways.”
“It’s not really like I have much of a choice. It’s what my family has done for countless generations. It needs to be done. It’s a thankless job, but it has to be done.”
The implications to this were staggering. This meant that she could be killing more of these things than there were bodies left behind. “In the past, how did your family deal with those kinds of demons?”
“Various ways. It depends on the hunter and where she is. Hunters by large bodies of water will often dump them. In wide-open areas, it’s not unheard of for them to be burned. The closer to populated areas you get, the more cautious you have to be. Personally, I prefer corrosive acids. It’s very hard to get ones that will only dissolve the demon and not damage the surrounding area. Does that answer your question?”
“Pretty much, yeah.”
“Alright then.” She stood up. “Good day, Agent Mulder.”
He stood and grabbed her arm as she walked by. “I’m not finished yet.”
“Let go of me,” she hissed, eyes flashing angrily.
He did so in shock. “Sorry.”
“Let’s get one thing straight here, Mulder. If you touch me again, I will hurt you. Not here, but once you leave, you’re ass is grass, understand?”
“No, I don’t. Why didn’t you tell me about the condition you were in when I talked to you in your dressing room? You certainly didn’t sound like you weren’t enjoying it at the time.”
“Has anyone tried to explain the situation to you?”
“Krycek said something about you being messed up, but nothing beyond that. Frankly, it being Krycek, I don’t trust anything he says.”
“You would do well to listen to him on this.”
“You don’t know him very well, do you?”
“I know what I need to know.”
“Would you care to explain? Nothing seems to be making any sense right now.”
“I don’t have to tell you anything, you know. This is my private life and I would appreciate you staying out of it. You got the answer you were looking for.”
“I’m looking for more than one answer, Riley.”
“I don’t have time to tell you about it. I have far more important things to take care of.”
“How’s later tonight for you?”
“I’m not interested, Mulder.”
Mulder felt his blood go cold. “Why couldn’t you have said something then rather than letting me hang on to the belief that you were?”
She sighed tiredly. “I thought I’d just explained that.”
“Not to my satisfaction.”
“I don’t have time for that now.”
“I need to know.”
“I need to get going. If you keep pestering me, I’ll waste valuable time.”
“So answer the question.”
Riley threw her hands up in frustration. “That’s it, I’m going now. You’re not listening to a word I’m saying.”
He watched her go, fighting his urge to punch the wall. Lorne walked up to him with a sympathetic look on his face. “Don’t let it bother you to much. She has every reason to not want to talk to you.”
“And I suppose you know what those reasons are?” he snapped angrily.
“Most of them, yes.”
“Would you mind filling me in?”
“I would if I could, but it’s her life and I’m not at liberty to discuss it. They’re good reasons, though.”
“That’s not very comforting.”
“It wasn’t supposed to be.”
“Is there anything at all that you can tell me? Why was she so messed up?”
“Correction. Is so messed up. The month isn’t over yet. You’d better sit down again, Mulder. This is a long story.”
