Chapter 19 – Stubbornness reigns! It was late January, snowdrops and crocuses had found their way up though the winter earth and a sprinkling of snow had laid over everything it touched leaving it looking clean and untouched. Alex stormed into the kitchen, banging the door behind her as she went, taking the kettle from its position on the worktop and filling it with cold water from the tap. She set it to boil, finding a mug and teabag to make herself a drink. ‘The bloody gaul of the man’, her head screamed out silently. She lent her body against the cupboards, crossed her arms over her chest and sighed, heavily, waiting for his appearence. Finally, Gene followed her in, banging the door behind himself with so much ferociousness that it nearly came off it hinges. “Why do you ‘ave to always ‘ave it your bloody way?” His blue eyes shone with anger. “Because this is my life we’re talking about!” Her eyes matching his. “You’re carryin’ me baby, Bolly, doesn’t that rin’ any bloody bells in your ‘ead! I’m doin’ this for you, you said yourself that the first three months are the most dangerous an’ yet you still wanna go out there day after day an’ try an’ get yourself killed!” “But you’re making me give up something I love, what do you expect me to do, sit at home every day, knitting and cooking your bloody tea, waiting for you to eventually swan home in the early hours of the morning and expect me to be fine with that too. I’m not your ex-wife!” “Don’t I bloody know! Jesus Christ!” She was so stubborn at times, they both were. He dragged his hands through his hair in frustation. “The last thing I expect you to do is sit ‘ere waitin’ for me, cleanin’ up and lookin’ after me. I don’t want my ex-wife or someat even remotely like ‘er, I want you! And if that bloody means I’ve got t’ desk ya for a few months, in order to make sure you’re ok, then so be it!” “So what exactly am I supposed to do? Sit there twiddling my thumbs? I’m your DI!” “I know, Alex,” he said calmly, “you’re also my fiance, and the mother of my unborn child and I respect all of those things. We just need to find a ‘appy medium, someat that suits everyone o’ us! Believe me, the last thin’ I want is to loose you off the team, an’ this way you’re still on it. You’re still my DI, it’s just that you’ll do your profilin’ an’ work things out in that pretty little ‘ead o’ yours in the confines of the office. You’re still doin’ the same job, just not actively. An’ when the baby comes, well we’ll sort someat out then too.” “I’m a sodding police officer and a detective at that, how can I detect sat behind a poxy desk!” “Please, calm down, Alex? We’ll sort someat out, I promise, but it’s what I want, in fact it’s an order!” “What to accept my fate like a good little girl, I didn’t bloody do it in 1995, I’m buggered if I’m going to do it now!” She made her escape out into the hall banging the door behind her again as she went through, she pulled on her flat boots, the hat, gloves and scarf set that Gene had given her for Christmas and a long woollen navy coat she’d bought in the sales. Gene had followed her out again and was standing watching her put on her outdoor gear, “where do you think you’re going?” “Out!” “Where?” “I don’t know!” “Why?” “Because I need some bloody space, I’m getting choked up in here. Must be all the bullshit that’s being thrown my way!” “Alex?” He called, grabbing her arm and drawing her to him, “I’m sorry, I never meant to …” “What?” She asked defiantly, “order me to do as you bid, because you’ve already passed your little plan onto the Super, or what? Impregnate me? Ask me to marry you even? What the hell am I doing Hunt? Tell me please, because at the moment I haven’t got a clue. I just know that my neanderthal of a boyfriend doesn’t think I’m capable of stepping away from sticky situations in order to look after myself!” “Eh?” He spat out in utter disbelief and total confusion. “The reason wasn’t because I didn’t think you could ‘andle yourself, it’s because I’m supposed to provide for my family and keep them out of ‘arm’s way. I worry ‘bout ya, but I’m not worried ‘bout your professionalism, I’m worried ‘bout the scum out there that will use your situation to better there own!” The front door slammed sure, he wasn’t even sure if she’d heard his last few sentences but after quickly moving into the living room he was able to see which direction she was stomping off in. He knew where she was going, he’d go and get her in a couple of hours when he knew she’d calmed down enough to talk to her properly. He sat down in his armchair and picked up the handset of the phone, punched in the familiar numbers, it connected and rang the other end. “’Ello?” “Annie? … Hi. It’s Gene! … Is Sam ‘bout? … Sammy boy! … ‘Ow are ya? … Good, good. … No, not really got a bit of a problem actually! Wondered if you had time to chat a bit? … Great, thanks. … It’s about Alex and the baby. … No, no, they’re both fine, she’s just a little upset ‘bout my proposals for ‘er working conditions. … Well, you see …” **************** Alex pulled the collar of the coat around her, it was a lovely crisp day, the sun was shining and for the time of year it was warm but the ever present breeze was icy and froze her to her core. She sat on the bench that was placed near her parents grave, she’d come often just to talk to her mum and let her know that she was well and being looked after by her Manc pussycat. “Hi, mum! How are you doing? I’m good, the baby’s good. Gene is totally obnoxious and pig headed as bloody usual, and … well he’s good too. He’s trying to put me behind a desk. Me and a desk, not like we’re close pals or anything, why can’t he see that it’s just not me, being stuck in doors running around after them all like a nurse maid. Might as well go back into uniform if I’m going to do that. I know he means well but he never consulted me, never asked me what I wanted, just bloody assumed and told the Super that was what he was going to do! “It’s almost like he doesn’t trust me … no, wait, not me, scum. He doesn’t trust scum to leave me alone. Maybe he’s right, he is my superior officer and I did promise to obey his orders when we started seeing one another. Just didn’t think it would be so difficult sometimes. I love him so much, mum.” The fingers of her right hand absently rubbed over the mitten covered diamond on her ring finger. “I never thought that the kind of man that would make me the happiest would be the likes of Gene Hunt, but he does, very much. So considerate to my needs. Always looking out for me,” she began crying, “wanting to help me, carrying me to bed so my ankles don’t swell, bit soon I know but he won’t be able to do it when I weigh 20 stone, slight exaggeration. I know he loves me and in his old fashioned way just wants to provide for his family, I’m sure he’d prefer it if I didn’t work at all but he realises I would be desparately unhappy just being a wife and mother. Why can’t things be straightforward and why do we both have to be so stubborn.” She sat in silence taking in the churchyard around her, she’d been there a while already probably an hour or so. Her arms instinctively went around her body attempting to warm herself and keep out the chill. She decided that she needed to start moving again and, after saying goodbye to her mother, she made her way down to the bottom entrance and onto the common beyond. She followed the path down to the lake watching the other park users as she ambled slowly on. There were kids playing football, their coats marking out goal posts; couples were walking arm in arm; single people were walking their dogs; the playground was full of children on swings, slides, climbing bars, their parents encouraging their play. She came up to her favourite spot and sat on the bench, it overlooked the lake from the top, giving her views right down the park to where she had walked up from. She noticed ice covering part of the water with a few geese and ducks dotted about, either swimming or trying to negotiate the frosty layers. A father and son walked by choosing a spot further on where the father could help his son feed bread to the birds. She smiled, she hoped that Gene would want to do that, play with their children and teach them things. Read them bedtime stories and help them with their homework. Deep down she knew he would. “Penny for ‘em?” She looked up to see Gene in his usual black coat, actually closed for once, held securely in place by the knotted belt. She motioned for him to sit. He sat as close to her as he could get, but lent forward his forearms on his knees, he knew that if he tried to cuddle her right now she’d have none of it. She took a while to think about what she was going to say, watching the back of his head intently as he sat forward of her. “I was just thinking about that man over there,” she said, pointing to the man with his son, “and wondered what kind of a father you’d be!” “I’d like t’ think ‘firm but fair’!” “Like you are with your staff, then? I thought that was more ‘rule with an iron rod’!” “Alex, that’s not exactly fair, is it?” “No, I don’t suppose it is. It’s only with me then!” He was exasperated but he wasn’t going to rise to the bait. He was going to take Sam’s advice. “Alex, look, I’m sorry I didn’t consult you over this, I did what I thought was best at the time an’ I obviously can’t apologise enough, because you don’t seem to want to listen to me, the amount of times I ‘ave apologised.” He sat back and took up her watchful gaze, “I want to sort this out though, ‘ere an’ now! Let me just say what I ‘ave to say, you listen, then give me your thoughts, ok?” “Have you been reading one of my books?” “No, I’m not goin’ to spout pshychobabble crap at ya, wouldn’t work anyhow, you’d see right thought it. Just gonna speak from me ‘eart!” “Ok, I’m listening!” “No interruptions!” “No, just say what you have to say already, Gene!” “Ok, this is how I see it. You’re as good as me wife, you’re havin’ our kid and I ‘ave to do everything in my power t’ make sure that both o’ you are ok. We’ve gone through so much, I thought I’d lost you not just once but twice and I don’t want to go through that again, especially when you’re carrying someone that is so precious to us both. I love you, and I can’t wait to make you mine in name, as well as every other way I’ve already done. “At work, sure it’s got to be different. You, along with Sam, are the best bloody DI’s I’ve ever ‘ad the pleasure of workin’ wit’. So we don’t always see eye to eye but that’s what ‘appens. When I first met Sam, he taught me so much, all them modern policing methods that I then saw in you too, when you turned up. I couldn’t believe it when you arrived, intelligent, smart and a looker too, that were someat you ‘ad over Sam. You’re analytical, your profilin’ ability is amazin’ and you’re fast getting’ a great gut instinct and I want t’ keep that in my A-team for as long as I can. I don’t want to confine you to a desk, that were ne’er my intention really, but I only want you in the field when you need to be there, I want you off undercover for the time bein’ and no weapons. If you’re feelin’ tired, or ill in any way, tell me, I’ll get you ‘ome even if it’s not me takin’ ya. When the baby’s due, we’ll cut the hours a bit and we’ll get Granger trained up to you ‘elp out with the paper work. And when you’re ready to come back to work, and I mean ready via a doctor’s signature, well I’ve got an idea you might like. A creche, possibly encourage other young mother’s into the force and I could finally get a gold star from Scarman. In fact, I’ve already started sortin’ that one out. ‘Ow does that sound?” “You’ve really thought about this haven’t you?” “Yeah, and had a chat with Sam! He had a similar situation with Annie a few year back. Creche is a big hit apparently!” “Why does it always take an argument for us to see eye to eye?” “’Cause that’s the kind of people we are, you’ve got t’ promise someat else too!” “What?” “T’ calm down a bit, we need t’ keep our ead’s, don’t want you getting’ high blood pressure, do we?” She shook her head, half smiling, “no, last thing we want. Ok, but I’m not promising not to at least argue with you calmly!” He smirked, “thought not, I know why!” “Why?” “’Cause its bloody good fun makin’ up!” He said, his eyes brightly twinkling. “So?” “Sounds like a fair compromise,” she lent against his chest folding her arms around his torso, he complied bringing her closer into his embrace. “Firm but fair! Yes, I think you’re going to be a fantastic father!” Gene bent down and kissed her head in thanks, “come on, it’s getting chilly out ‘ere again and I put the dinner on before I came out t’ find you. Let’s go ‘ome, love! Maybe after me lamb roast we can do a bit of that makin’ up!” “Mmm,” she contemplated, walking with him out of the park and toward their home. “Love to!” ********* “Listen up, ladies!” Gene bellowed as he, Alex and Ray walked out of his office. “As, I think most of you are aware by now, DI Drake and I will joyfully be wrapped in our nuptials by the end of this year, I know it’s still only January but we’ve still got a bit of planning t’ do which is why it ain’t ‘appening yet.” “Plan to run the other way, love,” one of the lads shouted out. She smiled at the remark until she realised that Gene was now looking at her with one eyebrow raised. “Yes, thank you for that,” he scowled, turning back to the team. “I trust that you feel that I’m still running this ship effectively since it became common knowledge that Bolly an’ me were seeing each other?” A great sea of nodding heads and triumphant yells of “Yeah, Guv’” satisfied him of his continued commitment to his team and the fact that they still all respected both him and Alex. He carried on, bringing Alex to his side and placing his arm firmly around her shoulder, “so we’ll be able to count on your continued support when we two become three!” The group went silent; each looking around to the other’s to ascertain what Gene was going on about. “Am I really stood in a room full of detectives?” Alex took over, “Gene … DCI Hunt and I are having a baby!” The room erupted, Shaz found her way through the throng and gave Alex her biggest hug, “congratulations, ma’am,” she looked to Gene, “congratulations, Guv’!” Nothing was ever lost on Shaz and she could tell that these two people stood in front of her were very much in love, she was pleased. “Right you lot,” Gene shouted, “calm down a minute, we can all celebrate when we’re in Luigi’s in about,” he looked at the clock, “alf an ‘our! But ‘til then I’m just goin’ to go over what’s going to be ‘appening ‘round ‘ere till after the baby’s born!” Another eruption! “QUIET!” Gene looked around the room waiting for it to settle, he looked down to Alex and then to Ray, “told you we should’ve waited ‘til later! Right, DI Drake will still be doing ‘er job ‘til she is ready to go on maternity. At that point, Ray will become acting DI, after the good job he did when DI Drake and I were both off work I think we can give ‘im a chance to do another good job, don’t you? Chris, I’ll be lookin’ to bump you up to DS so do me proud, lad!” “Aye, Guv’, roger that!” “WPC Granger? I would like you to work alongside DI Drake, as a DC, learn from ‘er and when she ‘as to stay ‘ome liaise with ‘er. In the meantime, I’ve asked for a replacement for you and she should be wit’ us next week. Train ‘er well, got it?” Shaz nodded, her excitement evident. “An’ finally, DI Drake ‘as promised to tell me if she isn’t well, but knowing ‘er like I do I’m sure they’ll be times when she’ll try pullin’ the wool. I’m asking everyone to watch out for ‘er. Anythin’ that seems odd, tell me straight away, no messin’! I love this woman an’ I’ll ‘old you all responsible if anythin’ ‘appens to ‘er or the baby. Is that ok, Bols?” He looked to her again, squeezing her shoulder. Alex nodded her approval; Gene had certainly covered all the bases. “An’ for your information, I may be goin’ a bit soft in me old age but I’m still the ‘Manc Lion’, got it!” Everyone nodded again. “Good, right 5 pm, think its lunchtime, see you all at Luigi’s for a pre baby head wettin’ piss up!” ************* “Have you decided on names yet? Do you want to know the sex of the baby? Everything is ok isn’t it, just with what the Guv’ said earlier?” “Shaz, one question at a time please,” Alex was exhausted, sat at the bar with Shaz had been hard work tonight, it seemed like she hadn’t stopped asking questions since Alex had sat down. She took a sip of her orange juice before starting to answer. “We’ve not decided on names yet. I’m not bothered if I find out what sex the baby is but I think Gene wants the surprise. Everything is fine, I had a check up last week and the doctor was very happy. Gene’s just being Gene, just wants to make sure that neither I nor the baby have any trouble. He’s just looking after us, Shaz.” “He loves you!” “Yes,” she said happily, looking over to where he was stood with the lads, a full pint of lager still in his hand, “He does!” She watched him put the pint on the table and walk stealthily toward her. “Granger, get over there, Chris needs your ‘elp!” Quickly Shaz took her cue to leave. “Thank you, I thought she was never going to let up!” “Could see you were ‘avin’ trouble! Thought I’d best come an’ save ya!” He smiled down to her, “you ok?” “Fine, a little tired but good!” Luigi came behind the bar, “another drink Signor Hunt?” “No thanks, Luigi. Think I’m going to take Alex ‘ome!” “You can stay, you know, I’ll be fine.” She said. “I know I can stay, I just don’t want to. Not promisin’ anything though when the baby arrives. Probably be ‘ere all night then.” “Hopefully, I’ll still be high on gas and air and the epidural they give me. Are you sure? I don’t want you telling me off in future that I’m keeping you from your friends.” “Bols,” he lent in closer to her, his statement was only meant for her. “There comes a time in every man’s life, except possibly Raymondo’s,” he briefly looked at his permed haired DS, “when ‘e ‘as to realise where ‘is responsibilities lie. I want to take you ‘ome!” He pressed his lips to hers, giving her his full meaning. “Ah, amore. Didn’t I tell you Signor Hunt? All those night’s when you let Signorina Drake go up to that flat alone, eh? You could be married already!” “Luigi!” Gene spat out. “No, it has to be said, you were slow, an Italian man would’ve been a darn sight quicker to snare her. And bambino, there would be several by now!” Alex giggled at the interaction between the two men, she placed her hand on Gene’s arm, “Luigi, the relationship between Gene and I happened exactly as it should. In fact, if you come back to us in say 40 years and ask us how it is that we have stayed together for so long, we’ll tell you that it was because it took us both so bloody long to realise what we truly meant to one another and that it took us even longer to find a way to tell the other what they felt for them. Does that make sense?” “Not to me, Bols! I know one thin’ though, I shouldn’t been so bloody long getting’ me finger out me arse to ask you out in the first place! Luigi, you were right, I wanted to get into this woman’s knickers the very night I met ‘er, but I always thought I were ne’er good enough for ‘er.” He touched her cheek gently, “sometimes I still don’t, can’t believe ‘ow lucky I am to have this gorgeous, smart, girl, love me. When I knew I loved her I thought I’d ne’er get the chance to be wit’ ‘er,” turning to Alex he asked, “do you remember what you told me, ‘your friend I can be, your lover I can’t’, I often think about that, that was when I knew I loved you, Alex, knew I wanted to ‘ave you next to me forever, I just didn’t know what to do or say to make you change your mind.” She lent into his caresses, he dredged the last of his drink, “come on, let’s go ‘ome. Luigi, there’s £40, make sure that lot are paralytic before they go!”
