They found an abandoned apartment building to hide in for the night. Sam took the clay brick out of the case and put it on a table. Dean looked down at it. “That's a lot of fuss over a caveman Lego.”
Sam nodded. “Yeah. Well, whatever Dick wants is bricked up inside that.”
Dean took out a mallet and three pairs of safety glasses, giving Sam and Liam each a pair before putting his on. “Alright then.” Dean hit the clay and there was a loud clap of thunder. He hit it again and there was more thunder with a loud flash of lightning. Dean turned to his companions. “That sound like somebody saying, No, wait, stop to you?”
“Sounds like some kind of omen, yes,” Liam nodded.
Dean shrugged. “Oh well.”
He pounded at the clay until it fell apart and revealed a stone tablet with writing on it. Liam dropped, cracking his head hard on the table and Astiratu appeared beside the table. “Son of a bloody bitch!”
Dean blinked at him. “Haven’t seen you for a while.”
“Yeah, haven’t had much to do or say. Been completely content to hide in my body since that whole Lucifer thing.”
“Then why are you here now?” Sam asked.
Astiratu’s eyes narrowed. “Do I look like I fucking know?”
“It would be you three,” they heard Castiel’s voice behind them.
They all turned. “What would be us three?” Astiratu asked. “As you know, former friend, I don’t much like being kept in the dark, so, care to enlighten us?”
Castiel motioned to the tablet. “Take a closer look at that.”
Astiratu leaned over to look at it. “This is um, Metatron’s scribble.”
“Exactly,” Castiel nodded.
“You mean like the Transformer?” Sam looked confused.
Astiratu rolled his eyes. “No, like Daddy’s personal scribe.”
Dean pointed to the stone tablet. “That’s the word of God?”
Astiratu nodded. “Ding ding! Doesn’t explain why I was pulled out of my nice and cozy hole there.” He looked at his body on the floor and a little blood was oozing out of his forehead from where it hit the table. “And that’s gonna hurt.”
“Can either of you read this?” Dean asked.
Castiel shook his head. “It was not meant for angels. I was only alerted when it was opened, as I’m sure were the others of my garrison.”
“It’s about the leviathans,” Astiratu answered. “Which I’m sure is why Dick Roman was so keen to get his hands on it. Still does not explain why I’m here.”
“Who else would the Father trust with His word until the Prophet could get to it?” Castiel looked at him. “You and the Father had a special relationship that is widely envied. Yet another reason to dislike you.”
“What, getting screamed at all the time? That’s to be envied?”
“If you wouldn’t have misbehaved so much...”
Astiratu snorted. “Being a good little bitch. That’s no fun. What the hell would I do that for? Unlike full blooded angels I was given human free will and I think I make very good use of it thank you.”
“But you can read that?” Dean drew his attention.
“It hurts my head to look at for more than a few seconds, but yes. This first part is the creation of the leviathan and how they had to be locked up.”
“Does it say how to kill them?” Sam asked.
“Probably somewhere in this mess.”
“Then get to translating,” Dean grabbed a notebook and a pen and handed them over.
“I suppose I could translate it to Aramaic and give you the headache this is going to give me.”
“English please,” Dean sighed.
“Or maybe Korean.”
“English!” Dean shouted. “I’m sorry it hurts your head, but do you get how important this is to us?”
“I do,” Astiratu nodded. “But let’s just say my human self has come a lot further in forgiving your transgression than I have. I don’t take having my trust broken lightly.” He then looked to Castiel. “Something you should keep in mind if you’re going to stick around.”
Castiel sighed. “How many times can I say I’m sorry. I’ve been using the past several months to think about things and I have already reprimanded myself harshly.”
“Words are empty. If either of you wish to get back into my good graces you’ll figure out how to prove it.”
Just then an Asian kid came in. Astiratu glared at him making the kid shiver visibly. “Who the hell are you?”
“I’m Kevin Tran. I… I don’t know why, but… but I think that’s mine,” he pointed to the tablet. “Please don’t kill me.”
“Sit quietly and don’t annoy me and I won’t.”
“Astiratu,” Castiel took a step forward. “That is the Prophet, keeper of the word. You are supposed to give it to him.”
“And I will when I’m done with it. Also, towing the line isn’t going to prove to me I should trust you again.”
Kevin tried to sneak past him and grab the tablet. “I said sit!” Astiratu roared and pointed a finger. Sparks flew from his fingertip and Kevin was compelled to sit on the floor.
Kevin looked very scared. “What are you?”
“He’s a very old and very temperamental being,” Castiel answered the question. “I wouldn’t annoy him were I you.”
A male and female angel suddenly appeared. Astiratu growled. “Color me officially annoyed.”
The female stepped forward. “Sole keeper of the word on earth, we are here to take you.”
“What do you mean, take?” Kevin looked even more scared.
“Hello, Hester,” Castiel said.
Hester glared at him. “You. You smote thousands in heaven. You gave a big, scary speech. Then you were gone. What the hell was that?”
“Rude, for one thing.”
“Where have you been?” the male angel asked.
“Oh, Inias. Hester, I... I have been trying to gain perspective.”
Astiratu sighed. “Yeah. I’ve got this all covered, so you can go away now.”
Hester faced him. “It is our sworn duty to-”
“Blah blah blah,” Astiratu threw a ball of bright light at them and they disappeared. “I said go away.”
Dean blinked. “Wait, did you just smite them?”
“No. I sent them on a little trip to Timbuktu, quite literally.”
“Why Timbuktu?”
“It popped into my head. Any more stupid questions?”
“So, they’ll be back?” Sam asked.
“Probably, once they get their juice back. That means we need to move, so I’ll just pop back in personal meat suit for travel, and I’ll see you later.” He looked like he was concentrating, but nothing happened. “Why can’t I get back into my body?”
“Because as long as the tablet isn’t where it’s supposed to be you have to guard it as you are,” Castiel answered.
Astiratu threw his hands up. “Fucking super! Whatever, let’s just go.”
“Rufus’ cabin?” Dean looked to his brother.
“Yeah,” Sam nodded.
Astiratu picked up the tablet. “Just don’t forget that,” he pointed to his body on the way out.
Kevin got up off the floor. “Hey! I have to go with that!”
Astiratu turned to him. “Fine. Let’s first establish some ground rules, shall we? Rule number one, don’t annoy me. Rule number two, don’t annoy me. Rule number three, listen to what we tell you. If we tell you to jump, well, you jump just as high as you can, got it?”
“You… You said not to annoy you twice.”
“To stress the importance of that rule, cupcake.”
They all piled into the car, Kevin, Castiel, and Astiratu in the backseat with Liam’s body lying across their laps. They stopped at a gas station sometime the next day. Kevin was asleep in the backseat and Dean was putting gas in the car while Sam went in for some supplies. Sam came back out and handed Dean a coffee. “Hey. So, we got another wrinkle. Uh, looks like Kevin's gone missing, and it's gone federal.”
Dean sighed. “Great, so now we're kidnappers?”
“Oh, God,” Kevin groaned when he woke up.
“What?” Astiratu raised an eyebrow.
“Nothing. Just my life... my future …my girlfriend... my mom's car.”
“Oh, shut up.”
Sam glanced back. “Astiratu, I know you’re cranky, but try and be a little sympathetic.”
“How’s your body anyway?” Dean asked.
“It’s alive for now.”
Dean sighed. “Yeah, it hasn’t had any food for a while now.”
“It’s not food I would worry about. That body can go nine days without food. It’s water I would worry about.”
“Then we better hurry,” Dean stepped on the gas.
“What are you talking about?” Kevin asked.
Astiratu sighed. “This unconscious body in our laps, I am the soul that belongs inside it. I am also many other things. It would seem that I cannot get back into my body until you take the stupid Word of God and do whatever it is you’re supposed to do.”
“Go to the desert and learn the word away from men,” Castiel said.
Kevin started hyperventilating a little. “I can’t go live in a desert! I’m just a kid from Michigan trying to get into Harvard!”
“Yeah, well...” Astiratu stared out the window. “Thing is, when you’re chosen for something special nobody gives a crap about what you want or need. I learned that a very long time ago, so take my little pearl of wisdom and make good use of it.”
Sam and Dean alternated driving so they could make good time to the cabin. Dean escorted Astiratu and Kevin down to the basement. Kevin looked around. “This looks like a sex torture dungeon. Is this a sex torture dungeon?”
“No,” Dean answered as he cleared a space on the table. “Okay, Astiratu, start translating. Kevin, you’re probably hungry, so we’ll get settled and get some dinner started. Until then just sit quietly and don’t bother the cranky one.”
Kevin lowered himself into a chair. “I just want to be the first Asian American President of the United States.”
“That’s quite a goal,” Astiratu commented as he started writing. “But sadly your duty to this stupid tablet comes first, as does mine it would seem.”
A little while later Hester and Inais appeared with a third male angel. Hester glared at Castiel. “You have fallen in every way imaginable.”
Inais turned to Castiel. “Please, Castiel. We have to follow the code. Help us do our work.”
Castiel sighed. “I cannot. I am sorry, but you’re right, Hester, I have fallen. I am only here to assist my truest friend.”
“Enough!” Hester growled. “The Keeper goes to the desert tonight.”
Dean huffed. “Back off. We're actually trying to clean up one of your angel's messes! You know that.”
“He's right,” Castiel told her. “An angel brought the leviathan back into this world, and they begged him. They begged him not to do it.”
Dean sighed. “Look, just give us some time, okay? We will take care of your Prophet.”
Hester turned to him. “Why should we give you anything after everything you have taken from us? The very touch of you corrupts. When Castiel first laid a hand on you in hell he was lost! For that, you're going to pay.”
Hester advanced on Dean but Astiratu appeared between them. “I don’t think so, bitch. Enjoy Timbuktu? See, I can do all kinds of neat things with you, and I have a raging migraine from translating that tablet, so I wouldn’t push were I you.”
Her eyes narrowed, but she kept her distance. “You have pain because that script was not meant for your eyes.”
“Take one look at me and tell me if I care.”
“You wouldn’t dare stop us on our mission,” she took a step forward.
Astiratu chuckled. “Wouldn’t I?” There was a bright flash of light and then a rat was on the floor where Hester stood. “Anybody else want to antagonize me?” Nobody said anything. “Fantastic.” Astiratu headed back to the basement and returned with Kevin holding the tablet. “All done. Here’s your tablet and your Prophet.”
Inais stood with two other male angels. “Kevin. Castiel and I have had a little chat. We are going to take you home and watch you from there.”
Kevin nodded. “That’s good.”
The angels took Kevin and disappeared. Dean looked to Astiratu. “Well?”
“Leviathan cannot be slain but by a bone of a righteous mortal washed in the three bloods of the fallen. It says we need to start with the blood of a fallen angel.”
“I can help with that,” Castiel held a glass bottle and it filled with blood.
Dean took the bottle. “What are you gonna do, Cas?”
“I don't know. Isn't that amazing?”
Castiel disappeared and so did Astiratu. Liam’s eyes opened and he whimpered from the couch. Dean rushed over to him with a bottle of water. “Here, Babe, hydrate.”
Liam took the bottle. “My head. What happened?”
“Well, we found the Word of God in that clay brick and angels got involved, and you know how you pass out when angels get involved.”
Liam took a few gulps of water. “My head is killing me! Can you get me some aspirin or something?”
Dean sighed and stroked his hair. “I would, but I don’t think that would help. I think you’re just going to have to ride this out. I’m sorry. You hungry?”
“Starving.”
“Okay. We saved you some dinner. I’ll go warm it up for you.”
“Did we at least find anything out?”
“Yeah, and we have some work to do,” Sam sat beside him.
