When Dean and Liam got up, Sam was at the map table with papers scattered everywhere. “What's up, Beautiful Mind?” Dean greeted his brother.
Sam looked up. “Guess I just figured we can't exactly track Dagon, so I've been reading up on nephilim, trying to figure out how much time we have before-”
“Lucifer Jr. pops,” Dean finished the sentence.
“Yeah. Okay, so we know Kelly got pregnant sometime in early December. According to the lore, nephilim don't need nine months to get to full term, so I think she will be giving birth around May 18th.”
Dean sighed at that. “Which means we have less than a month to find her.”
“Yeah, and exactly no idea where to start.”
“Okay, but even if we do find her, what then?”
“I don't know. I mean, I-”
Sam was interrupted by the bunker door opening. Castiel came down the stairs and stood before them. “Hello.”
“Cas,” Sam was happy to see him. “Hey. You're all right. Where have you been?”
Dean was not so happy. “Let me rephrase that for Sam. Where the hell have you been? And why have you ignored our phone calls?”
The angel glanced at the floor for a moment. “Where I was, the reception was, uh, poor.”
Dean shook his head. “No bars? That's his excuse. Wow.”
“I smell heaven on you,” Liam commented.
“You what?” Castiel tilted his head in surprise.
“Yeah, all this time you've been gone, there have been some interesting developments,” Dean said.
The angel turned his attention back to Dean. “I was in heaven. I was working with the angels. When I saw Dagon had captured Kelly, I thought they could help.”
“And?” Sam inquired.
“Nothing.”
“Nothing smart anyhow,” Liam mumbled under his breath.
“Well, at least you're back. We're glad you're back,” Sam gave their friend a small smile while he started to try and straighten things up.
Dean's jaw clenched. “Really? No, I'm sorry. Okay, because while you were striking out in heaven, we had a shot at Dagon, and we lost.”
Castiel nodded. “I know. I received your messages.”
“Oh, you did receive the messages? Okay, that's good. So not only were you ditching us, but you were also ignoring us? That's great. Because we really could've used the backup. But, uh, you were too busy with, um... What was it? Nothing?”
“Dean...” Castiel was upset that Dean was so angry with him.
“What the hell is wrong with you, man? You know, whatever. That's... Yeah. Welcome back,” Dean stormed away.
“You could've at least told us so we weren't wondering,” Liam added before he headed to the kitchen.
Castiel followed Dean to his room. Dean had just sat down at his desk when the angel stepped in and held out a cassette tape. “Sorry, Dean. Um I just wanted to return this.”
Dean shook his head. “It's a gift. You keep those.”
“Oh,” the angel nodded as he put the tape back into his pocket.
“Cas, you can't... With everything that's going on, you can't just go dark like that. We didn't know what happened to you. We were worried. That's not okay.”
“Well, I didn't mean to add to your distress. Dean, I just keep failing. Again and again. When you were taken, I searched for months and I couldn't find you. And then Kelly escaped on my watch, and I couldn't find her. And I just needed to come back here with a win for you. For myself.”
Dean glared up at the angel. “You think you're the only one rolling snake eyes here? Me and Sam, we had her. We had Kelly and we lost her. And then...” he motioned in the air sort of toward the kitchen where Liam went.
“Yes, the barrier between the human consciousness and the being is degrading.”
“Kinda figured that out myself,” Dean mumbled. “What worries me is what it means.”
“I don't know,” was all Castiel could say. “This has never happened before.”
“So now I'm worried about him and also trying to find Kelly again.”
“And if you find her again?”
“Sam's working on it. Of course, he's hell-bent on finding something that doesn't mean killing her or her kid.”
“Right. And if he doesn't find something? If you run out of time, could either of you kill an innocent?”
“I don't think it will come to that,” Liam entered the room. “Not if things go my way.”
“Not that you'll tell me what that way is...” the frustration was oozing from Dean.
“Where would be the fun in that? Anyhow, Sam had a thought. We can't track Dagon, but the baby is who we want to find, so maybe if we can work up a nephimim tracking spell...”
“It's a thought,” Dean agreed. “If you can get it to work.” He noticed Castiel was gone again. “Figures.”
“He's up to something,” Liam mumbled as he threw his shirt in the hamper.
“So are you.”
The blond moved to stand behind Dean and wrapped his arms around his mate from behind, placing a soft kiss on the back of Dean's neck. “And you should know by now that when I feel you need to know I'll tell you. Not any sooner.”
Later that evening Dean discovered that the Colt was missing. Sam tried to call Castiel, sure that there was some logical explanation. He didn't want to believe that the angel disappearing again and the Colt also vanishing were connected. But Castiel wasn't answering his phone again. “Let me guess, no answer,” Dean said as he saw his brother hang up and sigh.
Sam shook his head. “I mean, how did Cas even get the Colt out of the safe in the first place?” Dean turned his gaze away, which caught Sam's attention. “Dean, you put the Colt back in the safe, right?”
Dean ran his hand through his hair. “It was under the bed. I like to keep it close. He came into my room and he played me.”
“Yeah, he played us all.”
“He played the two of you,” Liam corrected Sam.
“You were suspicious, but it's not like you figured it out and stopped him,” Dean pointed out. “I say we find him and we kick his feathered ass.”
“Dean, Cas wouldn't have taken the Colt if he wasn't going up against something big,” Sam said.
“Like Dagon and Kelly,” Liam added with confidence.
Dean raised an eyebrow at that. “So you do know?”
The blond shrugged. “Not like it's hard to figure out. He admitted to being in heaven. If Dagon is active, they can track her. And Cas really does want to set things right. They probably approached him with some suicidal plan that they think is foolproof.”
“Okay,” Dean sighed. “Since you seem to know everything, where is he?”
Liam closed his eyes for a moment, concentrating. “He's taking Kelly to the portal that goes to heaven. He's alone. His angel friends are dead.” Then he sneezed and leaned back in the chair he was sitting in.
Dean was suddenly concerned. “You look a little pale. You should go rest while we take care of this.”
“No,” Liam argued. “I'm not gonna be a good little soldier this time. I'm going after what I want, even if the effort kills me.”
Dean ran a hand through his husband's hair. “I would be very upset if that happened.”
Liam grabbed Dean's hand and gave it a little squeeze. “I know. I'll make a nice cup of tea to go and I'll nap in the car, okay?”
They tracked Castiel to an out of the way motel. Dean knocked on the door, and when Castiel peeked out with the Colt in hand, Dean grabbed the gun. “Yeah, that's mine. What the hell are you thinking, huh?”
“How did you find us?” Castiel wondered.
Liam pushed his way in. “Clearly you don't know me as well as you should. I told you the situation was taken care of.”
Sam followed Liam in. “Cas, when you came back, you didn't even look us in the eye. You wanna explain what's going on here?”
Castiel let out a deep sigh. “Yeah. I found Dagon.”
“Did you kill her?” Dean asked.
The angel paused a moment. “No. She's difficult to kill, okay?”
“We could've told you that,” Liam said in a sarcastic tone. “Had you, you know, stuck around and were straight with us.”
“Look, I know you're upset, but-” Castiel started to defend himself.
“But nothing! Why haven't you learned yet that going off by yourself is never a good idea? You're not me, Castiel.”
The angel's brows furrowed. “The barrier has become thinner than I originally thought.”
“All that aside, what are you doing here?” Sam asked.
The angel sighed. “I... My truck broke down.”
“Then why didn't you call us? Cas, we could've helped you.”
“I wanted to keep you out of this. I was trying to keep you safe.”
Dean shook his head. “You're not our babysitter, Cas, okay? That is not your job. And when in our whole lives have we ever been safe?”
“This is my responsibility because it is my plan.”
“I get the distinct impression that other angels had a hand in this dumpster fire,” Liam corrected the angel.
“He's taking me to heaven,” Kelly said as she emerged from the bathroom.
Dean raised an eyebrow. “You're taking her to the sandbox?”
Castiel nodded. “Yes. I'm ending this, once and for all. Kelly and her baby have to die.”
“Says you,” Liam said as he moved over to Kelly and touched her belly again. A golden light came from inside her. “Aww, he missed me,” the blond smiled before speaking a few more words in Aramaic.
The angel tilted his head. “I didn't know about that.”
“You would if you answered your phone,” Dean grumbled.
“Meanwhile, can we take this conversation elsewhere, guys?” Sam suggested. “We're kind of sitting ducks out here.”
Dean grabbed his keys. “Sam's right. Dagon is after Kelly. Your truck is broke down. Why don't we get in the Impala, we'll head back to the bunker, and we'll talk? We'll figure it out. And you,” he pointed to Liam. “You're gonna have to tell us what's in that head of yours. In order to make a decision, we do need to know now.”
“Very well,” Liam sighed. “I'll tell you everything when we're somewhere safe.”
“It was you,” Kelly had put her hand on her belly and was staring at Liam. “Something changed after you spoke to him. I didn't put it together at first, but I can tell he's drawn to you. He likes you.”
Everyone was then staring at the blond. He turned toward Dean. “We can't have biological children of our own, but how do you feel about adoption?”
Dean did a double take. “That's your plan? Adopt the spawn of Lucifer?”
Liam sighed. “I had a feeling that was going to be your reaction. Yes, Lucifer spawned this child, but he isn't here, is he?”
“No, he's not,” Sam answered the question. “We sent him back where he belongs. Still, the lore...”
“You're going to put more faith in an old book than in me?”
“That's not...” Sam ran a hand through his hair, not sure what to say.
“Nothing is born evil. Well, except for demons, which aren't really born. And then there are all the other monsters, which one could argue is a thing of nature and circumstance. We know this child is going to be very powerful, but perhaps with a little nurturing from the right person...”
“That's what I've been telling everyone all along,” Kelly was glad to finally have someone on her side. “I feel that my child is destined for greatness. I don't feel evil. I never did, but ever since you connected with him something has been different, better.”
Dean shook his head. “Crazy as always, but he's also making sense.”
Suddenly Dean, Sam, and Castiel went flying half way across the parking lot, and Dagon stepped out of the shadows. “Hey, girl!” she greeted Kelly with a cold smirk. “Wow, you weren't easy to find. When I flipped Kelvin he said you were going to the sandbox and I was waiting there for hours.”
“Plans change,” Liam said as he stepped between them.
Dagon sighed and shook her head. “You are becoming a major pain in my ass.”
The blond chuckled at that. “Then I'm doing my job.”
Dagon waved her arm to fling him back, but he retaliated and they both went flying. Liam hit the wall of the motel and slid to the ground with a groan. Dean pulled the Colt out of his pocket to try and shoot Dagon while she was distracted, but she noticed and teleported behind him. She grabbed both his arms and pulled them back, grabbing the weapon. “Yeah. Time to take this off the board.” The Colt melted in her hand, and she let the chunk of metal fall to the ground. “Okay. Who wants ice cream?”
“You really think I'm gonna let you get away that easy?” Liam got back on his feet.
Dagon only shrugged. “I know you don't want to, but human flesh makes you weak. I can smell the sickness from here.”
“That's never stopped me before,” Liam sounded very cocky as he charged her.
The two struggled. Liam grabbed Dagon roughly by the throat and her skin sizzled where he touched her. She cried out in pain, but wrestled away from the blond's grip and shoved him back. He fell, but kicked her legs out from under her. As soon as she hit the ground he was on her, stabbing her in the chest with a silver knife. There was a blast of red light as she threw him off her and she stood over him on the ground. “I give you props for spirit, but we both know you're too weak to finish this fight. See you in another lifetime.”
She raised her hand to finish the blond off, but a golden glow enveloped Kelly, and everyone turned their attention toward her as she raised her hand and threw a fireball at Dagon. When it hit her she screamed as she went up in flames.
“What was that?” Sam wondered out loud.
Kelly was smiling as she rubbed her belly. “My son was protecting his favorite person. I told you he's not evil.”
Castiel ran to Liam, who was still on the ground. “Are you all right?” he asked as he helped the blond up.
“I'll live,” Liam answered. “An apology would be nice though.”
“You are right, and I am sorry,” Castiel hung his head. “It was very wrong of me to go off on my own like that when I have friends who have handled everything thrown at them.”
“At least you finally apologized,” Dean said, holding his one arm and wincing.
“You're hurt,” Castiel frowned. “Here,” the angel moved to heal Dean's arm.
“Don't I get a little sugar?” Liam held his hands out, looking a bit hurt.
Castiel sighed. “I wish I could, but I can't fully heal the damage you do to yourself when you use your powers. But...” He put his hands on Liam and there was a warm glow for a second.
“That's a little better, thanks,” Liam kissed the angel on the cheek.
“So what now?” Sam asked, looking over at Kelly.
Dean was looking at Liam. “We both know it's pointless to argue. So what all did this plan involve? Are we taking her back to the bunker?”
“No,” Liam shook his head. “I don't think that would be the best environment for her or the baby.” He turned his gaze to Castiel. “And since I feel that I need to be with the two of you, I'm hoping that I can count on a friend to finally see things my way and take care of her for me.”
Castiel gave a little nod. “It would be an honor.”
“You do realize that if you betray my trust you'll be hunted down like a dog and turned inside out, right?”
“I don't doubt you.”
“Then we have an understanding.”
Kelly grabbed Liam's hand and smiled brightly at him, near tears. “Thank you.”
He lightly stroked her cheek. “No need to thank me for doing what I believe is right. It's my job.”
“But I think you've gone beyond the call of duty, and I will always be grateful.”
Dean fixed Castiel's truck, and they watched him leave with Kelly. “Are you absolutely sure about this?” Dean asked his husband.
“About as sure as I am of anything,” Liam answered.
Dean sighed. “I'm gonna trust you on this one. I'm also gonna get you home and in bed because you look like crap.”
“Do I get a full body massage?”
“Maybe. We'll see.”
