Chapter 2 - Mount Charleston
Thin, elongated shadows followed
Nick and Warrick as they hiked uphill to a crime scene on the slopes of Mount
Charleston; the sun was close to setting. Warrick had driven the SUV as close
as he could to where they needed to be.
The two friends had spent the drive time talking about Brass’s party. They
discussed how pleasantly surprised each had been to learn that Jim had found
himself a family, they chatted about Lynne and Del; but mostly, they talked
about Rachel. Well, Nick talked about Rachel, continuing even as they zeroed in
on the crime scene. Warrick just listened and nodded a lot. Suddenly, Nick
stopped talking, mid-sentence. He stood completely still, his gaze fixed on the
scene before him.
Warrick, too, was startled by the
“Let’s see what the evidence says.
I’ll take perimeter if you wanna get started with photos. Man, I hope we
brought enough swabs; we’re definitely gonna need them.”
“Yeah, procedure and protocol.”
Nick was looking all around. “Speaking of which, isn’t Brass the detective on
this? Where is he? And, where’s the first officer, not to mention the crime
scene tape? Is this scene even cleared?”
Warrick was already dialing his
cell phone, calling dispatch. Nick heard Warrick’s end of the conversation.
After identifying himself and giving their location, he asked for clarification
and instructions. He listened carefully, with an increasingly intense look on
his face, then he repeated their location coordinatand and explained that the
area was covered with blood. He listened some more. “Copy that, will do.”
Ending the call, he explained to Nick. “Dispatch had no prior record of this scene.
Makes me first officor aor at least first witness, since I called it in just
now. Here’s where it gets complicated, we’re in the wrong place. The crime
scene we’re supposed to investigate is about half a mile northeast of here.
Dispatch says to stay put, both of us, until backup arrives.”
“Man, I don’t like this. Something
feels very wrong, could be dangerous. You carrying?” Nick patted his holstered
weapon as he asked.
“Yeah, bro. Always do at a scene.”
~~~~~
As soon as Jim Brass reached his car, he was in full cop mode. He
started up, got rolling, and radioed in that he was proceeding to Mount
Charleston, the scene he had been called to investigate. During the drive, he
listened to the radio chatter, picking up information about the day’s cases. He
learned that Warrick and Nick had also been summoned to MoCharCharleston, and
that David Phillips, the young assistant coroner, was already enroute to the
same location. Arriving at the scene, he parked a short distance away, the
better to avoid crime scene contamination, and walked over to a couple of
uniformed officers and a pair of hikers. He wasted no time in getting down to
business.
Flashing his badge, he tersely began, “Captain James Brass, homicide.
What seems to be troutrouble here?”
~~~~~
Sara had also been examining the
scene; she approached her boss. “No obvious signs of recent digging. I marked a
few footprints, but they might be from the witnesses. You got something?” She
had seen the look of intense
concentration on his face; the “Grissom look.”
“We need to look inside the ground.
There’s nothing on the surface except the foot and ...”
“And we need to find the rest of
the body.”, she finished for him.
~~~~~
While Catherine interviewed the
hikers, shot dozens of photos, swabbed the blood-stained rocks, and took casts
of several footprints; Sara spearheaded a thorough search of the area using the
ground-penetrating radar unit. Then a class of cadets was called out and the
painstaking process of digging and sifting began. What they found was
sickening; several bodies, all of them in pieces. The crime scene a
ga
gruesome mass grave of assorted human body parts, in various stages of
decomposition.
~~~~~
“Okay, team, listen up.” Back at
the lab, just as dawn broke, Grissom was briefing his people. He indicated a
map resting on a nearby easel. “This map shows the Mount Charleston area,
including the two crime scenes, which are outlined in red. For the sake of
clarity, please refer to them as MC1 and MC2. MC1 is the southwestern site,
discovered and investigated by Warrick and Nick. They found an abundance of
blood evidence, some fragments of various human tissues, a few fibers, and a
single bullet. MC2 is the northeastern scene, processed by Sara and Catherine,
where the human remains were found. We now have a confirmed link between MC1
and MC2 - DNA. Greg will explain.”
With unusual solemnity, Greg began,
“I’ve run comparisons on the blood recovered from MC1 against blood taken from
the remains found at MC2. Not all the results are in yet, but my preliminary
findings clearly show matching DNA in both sites. At least two of the vics from
MC2 left blood at MC1”
Grissom took the floor again,
“Thanks, Greg. It would appear, people, that at least some of the vics were at
MC1. They ended up dead and dismembered, buried at MC2. That’s what we know so
far. There’s so much we don’t yet know, but we will. One priority is to ID the
vics. Another is to pinpoint exactly where, when, and how these people were
killed and dismembered.”
“How many vics are there?”, Nick
asked.
“It looks like 12. We won’t know
the final count for a while. Dr. Robbins and his people are trying to sort them
out, as well as trying to determine the cause or causes of death. Warrick,
Catherine, go back out there. Search the area between the sites. There could be
evidence there. Do it in daylight, I’ll okay the overtime. Nick, Sara, keep on
processing what’s already here.”, Grissom instructed.
Sara spoke up. “What about
suspects, those two hikers who called in MC2?”
Catherine answered, “Their story
checks out and there was no trace evidence on them, other than desert dust they
could have picked up anywhere. They’re not suspects.”
“Do we have any leads at all?” Sara
persisted.
“No, Sara, at this point, we
don’t.” Grissom was grim.
