Broken – Part Two
The horror continued to sink in as Archer stared at the face he hadn’t seen in over a year. He couldn’t believe it; a year of nothing and now this.
Reed’s face was so pale it was almost white; his lips and the area around his eyes were tinged grey, and if it were not for the slow movement of his chest Archer would have believed him dead.
Archer didn’t bother turning round as he heared footsteps behind him.
“Oh no…”
“Malcolm!”
“Oh God what have they done to him…?”
Attached to Reed’s head was a contraption that Archer couldn’t name. A long metallic band was welded across his forehead; two wires connected to beeping machines on either side. No less than six probes were implanted into his skull, each one linked by more wire to a terminal that displayed a 3D image of a brain – probably Malcolm’s.
Oh God what have they done…
Archer turned around smartly to face his senior staff. At the moment it didn’t matter what the perpetrators had done; they had found Malcolm alive which was more that they could have hoped for. What mattered now was to get Malcolm back to Enterprise as soon as possible.
“Archer to Enterprise. Send a medical team down, we have an emergency…”

Doctor Phlox had none of his usual cheery persona as he eyed Malcolm critically. The Denobulian had said nothing since he had entered other than to reassure the crew that the lieutenant was in no immediate danger.
It had taken the medical team a while to find the square that would transport them down below. Archer was still thankful that the transmission had gotten through; if they had not been able to make contact with the ship he’d hate to think what a mess they would have been in.
After what seemed like years, Phlox finally faced them. Everyone in the room stood to attention, eager to get their college and themselves out of the disturbing laboratory.
Phlox cleared his throat in the uneasy silence.
“After careful examination I conclude that it would be safe to sever the wires connecting Mr Reed to the terminals. As to the probes and other things, I will have to make more detailed examinations on Enterprise before I can make any attempt to remove them.”
Archer murmured his assent the medical team started to remove Reed from his confinement. The metal contraption attached to the lower half of his was left while they continued to remove his restraints. Upon freeing his wrists Archer could see burns around his them as well as a long deep scar up his forearms. Archer shivered; it had been so bad that Malcolm of all people had tired to commit suicide?
As the crew carried their burden out to the corridor that they materialised in Archer couldn’t help thinking that perhaps Malcolm being alive would not be a good thing from the lieutenant’s point of view.

The doors of sick bay swished open to admit Archer’s weary form. His senior officers were already there. Hoshi and Travis were standing together just beside the doors, whispering to each other; no doubt about why they had been summoned. Trip was leaning against the wall a few meters away, a troubled look on his face. T’pol was beside him – close enough to comfort but not to press- and like always appeared to be calm and collected her wringing hands the only sign of how much the situation distressed her.
Phlox stood beside Reed’s prone form now devoid of all probes and other attachments. He was also shaved and some colour had returned to his face but he still looked pasty; the grey tinge not yet completely gone from around his eyes. It had taken Phlox three weeks to successfully remove all of the implants including the one inserted in his mouth that the doctor thought to be a breathing apparatus design to keep a comatose patient alive for sometime. For some reason, it was this that unnerved Archer the most.
“The reason I’ve called you hear is that I am ready to wake Mr Reed from his comatose state.” said Phlox as Archer propped himself up on the other side of the door.
“Really?” exclaimed Trip, “so he’s going to be ok?”
Phlox hesitated before answering.
“Not necessarily. I will warn you now. From what I could gather, Mr Reed has been subjected to some sort of neurological experiment. You must be prepared for the worst.”
The worst? Archer thought, how bad can it be?
Trip and Archer stood as Phlox put a hypo spray against Reed’s neck. There was a brief hiss and the room held its breath.
The first sign of life from Reed was a slight frown across his forehead. Then very slowly, he opened his eyes.
“Welcome back Mr Reed. You are on the Enterprise and you are quite safe. I know you must be confused…”
But Phlox never got to finish his sentence as Reed scrambled from the bed and rammed himself into the far corner of the room.
“Reed…Malcolm…its ok, you’re safe…”
But Malcolm didn’t appear to be listening. He looked wildly around him, his hair, cut shorter by one of the medics, fell over his eyes and gave him a dark look to go with his frightened one.
“Malcolm…”
Archer stepped forward, trying to comfort him, but Malcolm just backed further into the corner.
“The voices…”
Reed’s first words were no more than a whisper and would have been lost if the room had not been eerily silent.
“The voices…they won’t stop…I-I can’t shut them up!”
Reed’s voice had risen to a hysterical scream by the end of his first sentence, and was now madly clinging to his head, as if he could tear the voices out of himself.
Archer realise what Phlox meant by “the worst” – he meant insanity.
