11:00:00am
Laura looked to her left; the President sat beside her. It wasn’t odd for them to be sat like this, he liked her to sit with him in the car and take notes so that a journey wasn’t wasted, however, usually this was from one meeting to another, not on the way to a public event. She sighed, taking out a small note pad and a pen, she opened it and began scribbling a few notes when her phone rang. She pulled it from her jacket pocket, smiling apologetically to the President and pressing the answer button.
“Henley.” She exclaimed shortly.
“Miss Henley, I am CTU agent Chase Edmunds, I’ll be leading the team with the President today.” Chase replied, smiling to Kim.
“Mr Edmunds, our car will be pulling in to the staff entrance parking garage in…” She looked at her watch. “Approximately twenty-five minutes. We will only have five minutes to co-ordinate before the President is expected at the front.”
“That should be fine Miss Henley, we don’t have much to co-ordinate, we’re pretty organised.”
“That’s good. See you then Mr. Edmunds.” She turned off her phone and slipped it back into her pocket.
“Mr President, that was Chase Edmunds from CTU, he’s the head of the team they’re sending for you.” She explained, closing her notebook.
“That’s good. I’ve heard of him from Palmer’s time. He was Jack Bauer’s partner.” Laura looked up, her eyes wide.
“Jack Bauer?”
“Yes, he’s a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to field ops, but he runs CTU very well.” The President informed her. Laura smiled slightly.
“I’ve heard of him.”
11:09:20am
He pulled his jacket on, checking his pockets a few times. He picked up the briefcase and opened it, lifting up the files to see a smaller version of a sniper rifle and a case of bullets. Covering it back up, he closed the briefcase and walked out to the car, placing the briefcase in the backseat and shut the door, climbing into the driver’s seat.
“Honey!” He looked up in exasperation, his wife running down the driveway towards him. He rolled down the window and leaned out, a clearly annoyed look on his face.
“Where are you going?” She whined, pouting in that way he used to love, but he now hated.
“Out.”
“But, where?”
“I’m going to a meeting.”
“Honey, it’s your day off.” She whined again.
“I know it is, but this is a very important client I’m trying to win.”
“Ok, well hurry back. I wanted to spend some time with you today.”
“I’ll likely be gone all day. I’ll see you later.”
Turning the ignition, he revved the car a few times and reversed out of the driveway. Turning out onto the road and driving away, grateful he had been able to think of an excuse before she asked.
11:14:54am
Jack let his phone ring twice before answering. He pressed the button, waiting for the shit to hit the fan.
“Bauer.”
“Jack, it’s Chloe.”
“Yes Chloe?”
“I’ve managed to lock down both of the origins of our phone call.” Jack swerved into the right hand lane and prepared to turn right onto Vermont.
“Where are they?”
“One’s in a suburb of north Hollywood, to the west, it’s narrowing now. The other was in Malibu. I can’t tell which is which yet though, it’s scrambled pretty well.”
“Ok, Chloe, keep working on it. I’m approaching the Hotel. We need to know which was the origin and which was the recipient.”
“Ok Jack, I’ll call when I have them.”
“Thanks Chloe.”
He hung up the phone, turning right onto Vermont and pulling into the parking garage. Climbing out of the car, he walked up to the main entrance and walked through the revolving door. The check in desk was on his left as he turned and strolled towards it.
“Good morning Sir, can I help you?” The receptionist asked breezily.
“Yes, I’d like to speak to your hotel manager.”
“Sir, is there a problem?”
“No,” He pulled out his badge and showed it to her. “I just need a word with your manager about previous stays here.
“I’ll just get him for you.” She replied nervously, walking out into the back and opening the door. “Sir, there’s a man here for you. He’s with the Government.” Jack heard a mumbled response before a man in a black suit emerged from the office.
“Yes Sir I am Mr Andrews, the Hotel Manager, how can I help?”
“Mr Andrews, my name is Jack Bauer, I’m with the Counter Terrorist Unit. I need to look at your records for a meeting which took place three weeks ago today, room eight three four.”
“What is the reason for this, Mr Bauer?”
“I need to find out the name of the man who booked the room. It could be an alias but I need to know it.”
“Yes Sir, if you’d like to come into the office I can find that for you.” Jack nodded and followed the manager into the office; it was messy and obvious that the manager was extremely unorganised. He smiled slightly; he’d be skinned alive if he had kept his office like this.
“Where do you keep the records?”
“All records from the last six months are kept on the computer, we also have paper records but they’d take a lot of time to go through.”
“Ok, go to the records for three weeks ago, room eight three four.”
“Right.” He clicked the mouse a few times before using the keyboard to type in the date and room number. Ok, we had two bookings for that room, one was for the night before, they checked out at exactly eleven fifteen. Then we had a man check in at two forty five.”
“That’s the one we’re looking for. Do you have a name?”
“A Mr Michael Pain.”
“What time did he check out?”
“Um?” He looked at the screen. “That’s odd, he checked out at five thirty.”
“Right, that’s my guy. Do you have any other information on him?”
“Only credit card, but that’s private information.”
“Mr Andrews, I can get an order from my Division sent over to you, but I really need that information now.”
“Is this legal Mr Bauer?”
“We believe this man is planning a terrorist attack, I need to track him.” The manager nodded slowly and brought up the information. “Thank you.”
Jack copied down the information and flipped open his cell phone, dialling quickly.
“Chloe.”
“Chloe it’s Jack.”
“Hey Jack, I’m not any further.”
“It’s alright, I have the information. We’re looking for a Mr Michael Pain. Credit card number is six nine five seven, eight two six six, nine eight seven four, three two five one.” He paused for a moment. “You got that?”
“Yep Jack, tracking it now.”
“Ok, I’m on my way back. Have it by the time I get there.” Jack closed his cell phone and thanked the manager before leaving the hotel and getting back into his car.
11:25:26am
Chase and Kim watched from the car as the Presidential convoy arrived, pulling into the staff entrance. The driver of the President’s car got out and opened the door on his side, the President stepping out as the other door opened and a young dark haired woman stepped out, nodding to the president and closing the door, beginning over to Chase’s car. Chase stepped out of the car, noticing Kim doing the same, shutting the door with a snap, he stepped towards the woman. She held out her hand and smiled warmly.
“Mr Edmunds?”
“Yes. You must be Miss Henley.” He replied, shaking her hand.
“Yes.”
“This is Miss Bauer, she’ll be running our technology from this end.”
“Miss Bauer? I’ve heard a lot about a Mr Jack Bauer, but only very little about you.” She looked Kim up and down; she was only a little older than her. She hadn’t expected Jack’s daughter to be older than her, though she was sure Jack had mentioned it.
“Jack Bauer is my father.” Kim replied just as warmly. It didn’t surprise her that her father’s reputation had spread to the President’s staff.
“Mr Edmunds, Miss Bauer, may I introduce President Logan.” Laura commented as the President approached. Chase extended his hand.
“Mr President.” The President moved to Kim next and shook her hand.
“Mr President.” She repeated as he withdrew.
“Good morning Mr Edmunds, Miss Bauer. Thank you for accommodating me on such short notice.” He greeted cordially.
“It’s an honour, Mr President.” Chase replied politely. In all honesty, there were many things he’d have preferred to be doing at this time, many of them with Kim, but he knew the seriousness of the situation.
“Mr President,” Kim interjected. “I thought I’d give you a run down. We have a team surrounding the mall, a few with snipers and some on the ground dressed in civilian clothes. I’ll be running the techs with CTU. You won’t have to worry at all.”
“Thank you Miss Bauer, it’s a load off of my mind knowing I have LA’s best protection with me.” Kim smiled.
“Well, Mr President, it would have been better but my father had to stay in the office.” Logan laughed.
“I know your father’s reputation Miss Bauer. I’m only hoping he is staying inside of protocol.” Kim blushed furiously.
“Mr President?” Laura interrupted. “We’re going to be late.”
“Yes, Laura.”
“We’ll be right behind you Mr President.” Chase informed him. “Miss Henley?” Laura turned on the spot and faced Chase.
“If you could give Kim your com kit for one second, she’ll tune you into our com system.” Laura pulled out her earpiece and pack and handed them to Kim. Kim fiddled with it for a second, opened up the Laptop and typed in a few things before handing it back to Laura.
“Just test it will you Chase.” Laura placed her earpiece in and replaced her pack.
“Henley?” Chase said clearly.
“Loud and clear Mr Edmunds, and call me Laura.” Chase nodded.
“Chase.” He smiled to her. She nodded, and turned back to the President, escorting him around to the front of the building.
“Kim,” Chase turned to Kim and placed a hand on her arm. “Stay with the car, you can work tech from here.” Kim nodded and he kissed her on the cheek. “See you in a bit.”
Kim climbed back into the car and set up her laptop on her lap, plugging in her earpiece.
“Chase, can you hear me?”
“Perfectly, Kim.”
“Good. We have a sniper on the left corner of the building in front of the mall, one in the centre of the buildings to the left and right of the mall. All are positioned already.”
“Great, should be an all clear.”
11:35:12am
“Where are we on that card number Chloe?” Jack asked as soon as he was into the main office.
“Mr Michael Pain, husband and father of three. Works in accounting, lives in Malibu, but Jack, I think this is the wrong guy, not even a parking ticket.” Chloe replied.
“Get a team down there, see if Mr Pain is home. If not, find out where he is today, I want to know everything. We can’t rule him out, it was his name the room was under and his credit card.”
“But Jack…”
“Just do it Chloe, no arguments.”
11:37:01am
“Anything Chase?” Kim asked over the com.
“Nothing, everything seems completely ordinary, big crowd but that’s expected at a Presidential appearance.” Chase replied.
“Nothing close either Kim.” Laura added quietly, as if she was trying to do it without being seen to be talking.
“Eyes open anyway.” Kim replied just as her phone went off. She jumped slightly and answered it. “Bauer.”
“Kim it’s your dad.”
“Hi Dad.” Kim replied. On the other end of the com, Laura clenched slightly, Kim was talking to Jack.
“Kim, we’ve got a lead on our attackers. A man named Aves and another called Michael Pain.”
“Right, any ideas on the plan?”
“Nothing so far Kim. Who’s the liaison to the President over there? The head of security, Aaron?” Jack asked. He hoped it was, Aaron was the best.
“No,” Jack cursed silently. “It’s a woman, named Laura Henley.” Jack stopped cold. Laura had told him about her job in the president’s office, but he’d assumed it’d been a low maintenance job.
“What?”
“Her name’s Laura Henley.” Jack breathed deeply a few times. Kim heard it. “You ok dad?” Laura listened intently, it was extremely frustrating only hearing Kim’s half of the conversation, she hadn’t heard Jack’s voice in a while and she would have liked to, it always calmed her.
“Yeah I’m fine, honey, I just expected Aaron.”
“She’s tapped into our com system anyway, so you can log in if you need to.”
“I will in a second, though I won’t make myself heard unless I have to.”
“Ok dad, look, I better go, it’s starting.”
“Ok, be careful Kim.” He pressed off the phone and sat down, what the hell was Laura doing there? She wasn’t trained for this sort of thing. He shook it off and opened his office door.
“Jacob, I need a link into the com system Chase’s team is using, link it to my office.” He called down to Jacob, who was sitting next to Chloe.
“Right-O Jack.” Jacob called back up, sitting down and linking it up. “It’s up.”
“Thanks.” Jack returned to his office, taking a seat, and looking to his computer, trying to clear his mind until something happened, hoping it didn’t.
11:40:34am
“Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you for joining us today. Today we witness the opening of a new mall here in North Hollywood, a great day for the United States economy and social wellbeing. By continuing with our lives, we are showing those who would wish to bring America down that we will not let them do so, that we will carry on.” The people in the crowd cheered as the President beamed down at them. He was about to continue, to state that the people of America were a lucky nation; that their government would not let anyone jeopardize their freedom, but before he could, a woman screamed.
Chase pulled out his gun and jumped in the direction the woman screamed. Laura also had her hand on her gun, looking around to see the nature of the situation. She moved towards the President, placing her hand on his arm as he turned to her, confused.
“What’s going on?” He asked calmly.
“We’re not sure yet, Sir.” She replied. “Chase, what’s going on?”
“I can’t see anything.” Chase replied over the com. “Kim, can you see anything on the satellite?”
“There’s nothing out of the ordinary.” Kim explained, bemused. Wait, Chase, you have four men approaching. I can’t see them clearly, coming from the west. I want all snipers on these men in case.” Laura watched as Chase continued towards the west, looking around cautiously.
“Times Kim, please.”
“Two to your eleven, one at one, one at two.” Kim explained quickly.
Jack listened intently, what was going on over there? He brought up the link Kim was using and linked to her satellite, watching the men approaching. Suddenly he saw a gun; luckily Kim had seen it too.
“Chase, two o’clock has a weapon, I repeat he is hostel.” Laura turned to the President.
“Sir, I think we should get you out of here.” She explained. “We have a hostel.”
“We can’t just leave.” The President replied. “I need to finish this.”
“We don’t have time.” Laura replied urgently, though he wasn’t listening. He picked up the ceremonial scissors.
“I would like to declare this mall open.” He smiled as the press all turned back to him, snapping away as he cut the ribbon. He stood and smiled for photos for a moment before Laura touched his arm again.
“Mr President, we need to get you back to the car.” She murmured.
“Ok, Laura, let’s go.” She manoeuvred him back towards the mall, nearing a window when a shot was fired and the glass shattered behind them.
“WE HAVE SHOTS!” Chase yelled over the com, Laura pulled the President to the ground, looking around them.
“We have to run.” She ordered, pulling out her gun. “Follow me.”
Staying low, she led the President along the side of the Mall, preying for a way through that would be less open, when a call came over the com.
“Laura, turn left, into the alley.” A deeper voice came onto the com, she recognised it straight away. It was Jack. Pulling the President in with her, she held him against the wall.
“Where are they?” She asked quietly, looking out around the alley corner.
“You have one approaching from the East, two from the north, you need to get out of there; the alley is a dead end.” Kim explained.
“Ok, can you direct me?”
“Sure. Right, wait one second. Go on my say so. You’ll need to move quickly.” Kim continued.
“What’s going on?” The President asked.
“Kim’s going to direct us to get us out of here.”
“Out of the alley, turn left and run along the north wall. GO Laura.” Laura indicated for the President to follow her and began sprinting along the north wall, trying her best to keep low.
“Left into the next dip Laura, NOW!” Kim yelled. Laura ducked into the dip, the President right next to her.”
“We’ve got a second.” Kim replied a little more calmly. “Chase, how’s things going?”
“I’m in the alley Laura and the President were just in, covering their backs. The others are dealing with the crowd.” Chase replied.
“Right Laura, Chase, we’ve got three hostels in pursuit, go now!”
Laura grabbed the President’s arm and bolted from the dip in the wall, looking behind her to see Chase hot in pursuit, three men behind them.
“You’re coming up to the edge of the mall, just turn and run back the way you went round.” Kim explained.
“Right.” Laura replied quickly, turning to the President. “Just back the way we came. You ok?” The President panted as they ran.
“I can make it.” He panted, running along with her.
They sprinted down the side of the mall, Chase catching up to them just as they turned into the car park and stopped.
“You alright Mr President?”
“I haven’t had that much exercise in years.” He panted.
“Sorry about the extreme measures, but in an open space like that, we needed to get you out of there.” Chase explained.
“I understand Mr Edmunds.” The President replied as Kim got out of the car and ran over.
“Are you all alright?”
“Yes, we’re fine.” Laura replied. “Come on, Mr President, we should get back to the office.”
“I agree.” He exclaimed. “Thank you for all your help.” He continued to Kim and Chase as they walked quickly to the car, but just before the door could be opened, a van screeched into the parking lot and eight men jumped out.
Laura, Chase and Kim all pulled their guns and pointed them, but before anyone could shoot, Chase fell to the ground, a man behind him holding a brick as the other three were grabbed, two men each and dragged into the van. The screech of tires brought Chase around and he looked up, alone in the parking lot.
“KIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
