Carly had been worried about Jason for weeks but due to Jax's absence, her schedule at the MetroCourt made it impossible for her to go see him. After her divorce from Sonny, Carly had refocused her attention on her sons, Michael and Morgan, in an effort to minimize the damage that Sonny's marriage deception had done.
Sonny had lied to her and Jason about needing to get married to avoid going to prison for the attempted murder of Lorenzo Alcazar. Carly wondered if Sonny's conscience gave him any pause now that things had gone so wrong in Jason's life. She doubted it. As far as Sonny was concerned, any ends that served his agenda completely justified the means. That was why she had cut off all contact with the man.
When she finally relented and listened to one of Sonny's messages, she was surprised to find that it was about Jason and not his usual self-serving nonsense. Apparently after Sam's funeral Jason had told Sonny that he needed to be alone for a while. Of course Sonny agreed. He told Jason to take all the time he needed and Sonny hadn't seen or spoken to him since. Sonny was getting worried. Jason had just withdrawn from the world.
This was not unusual. When Jason was hurting he disappeared. What was strange was the fact that he had not left town. Carly knew that Michael had gotten at least two emails from him, letting the boy know that Jason was ok and that he would stop by the house soon and spend some time with he and Morgan.
The hotel limo pulled up outside Jason's building just as Elizabeth and Jason were getting into a taxi. Carly watched with disdain as the cab pulled away from the curb.
"Follow that cab," she told the driver.
The limousine pulled back out into traffic and tailed the cab all the way to the building that housed Elizabeth's loft.
She didn't waste any time, did she? Carly thought to herself bitterly.
The fact that Carly did not like Elizabeth was no secret. She had known since the day Sam was killed that it would only be a matter of time before Liz moved in on Jason. The only thing left for Carly was to figure out what to do about it. No way was she going to allow 'Saint Elizabeth' to get her claws into another man Carly cared about.
The stupid girl had already driven Carly's cousin, Lucky, to drug addiction. Not to mention having broken Jason's heart not once, but twice already. Carly simply would not allow the twit to take advantage of him in his vulnerable condition.
"Did you want me to stop, Ms. Corinthos?" the driver asked as he saw the taxi pull to the curb in front of Liz's building.
"No, Henry. Head back to the MetroCourt. It looks like Mr. Morgan is busy at the moment," she replied.
She would decide how to handle Elizabeth over dinner. At least she knew that Jason was alive and as well as could be expected, for the moment.

Lucky sat at his desk replaying the telephone call with Elizabeth in his head again. He had been over it so many times he was beginning to get a headache but he was convinced that if he just thought about it long enough he could find the clue he was looking for. He just needed to figure out how to get Elizabeth back. She was the love of his life and he knew that without her and his children his life was not worth a dime.
He opened his desk drawer and discreetly checked to make sure the baggy of pills was still there. He had not taken one since he left rehab, and didn’t intend to, but having them within easy reach seemed to ease his mind a bit. It was as though just knowing they were there was enough to get him through the day. His NA group would probably tell him that it was just another crutch. He did have sense enough to see how risky it was to have his preferred drug so close at hand this early in his recovery.
Somehow having the illicit drugs in his desk drawer right in the middle of the PCPD gave him a sense of smug satisfaction. All the self-righteous, judgmental hypocrites that live in his hometown had judged him so severely.
“Hey, partner. You okay?” Cruz Rodriguez asked Lucky, the look of concern evident on the other cop’s face.
“I’m fine. Rodriguez, you can’t keep asking me that every five minutes if we’re going to remain partners. Its getting old real fast man,” Lucky said with a sharp tone.
Cruz recognized the other man’s denial. As a recovering addict himself, Rodriguez knew only too well just where Spencer’s head was at. This would be a very critical time in the young man’s recovery. A time that would either make it or break it, depending on what went down between Lucky and Elizabeth.
“Its cool. You just looked like you were a million miles away is all,” Cruz said, trying to get the other man to relax.
“Oh yeah, I was actually. Thinking about El…”
“Elizabeth. I know. I get it, really, but if she isn’t coming back to you, then isn’t it a good idea to start figuring out your life without her?” Rodriguez asked. He was hoping that opening up a little might help Lucky lose some of the tension he’d been carrying around for weeks.

Liz opened the door to her loft and led the way inside. This was familiar territory for her and Jason. Over the years it had become a safe haven, of sorts, for the pair. Any time Jason was in trouble or injured they wound up in that apartment with Elizabeth caring for his wounds.
Conversely, Jason had taken care of Elizabeth emotionally even more frequently. She planned to return the favor tonight, if he would let her.
"Sorry the place is such a mess. I wasn't really planning on being here tonight," Liz told him casually.
"It's fine," he said.
Elizabeth noticed that the sullenness had returned to his voice. It was as though he was punishing himself for his momentary enjoyment of the baby's movement. Like he no longer felt entitled to feel happy about anything, no matter how small.
"You look tired. Sit down and I'll get you some water," she told him. She knew that re-hydrating him would be the best thing to minimize the hang over he was sure to have in the morning.
Sighing, Jason walked over and sat down on the small sofa. He looked around and, for the first time, thought the space looked shabby. Elizabeth deserved so much more than that. He wished she had let him buy her a house a couple of years ago. She was so special and it hurt him to think of her struggling with mundane problems like rent or having to decide between paying a bill or buying food for herself and her children.
Lucky Spencer was a fool. Jason would have given his life to have ever been in the position that Lucky had taken for granted. Anger bubbled up within him and Jason had an impulse to go find Detective Spencer and beat some sense into his pill-popping brain. How any man could treat Elizabeth as anything less than the most precious gift in their life was beyond him.
Jason knew that he, personally, would never be good enough for Elizabeth. He was in too deep in the Organization to get out safely and she had made it perfectly clear that she would not live in his world. And that had been before she was a mother. Now he wouldn't even allow himself to dream of it.
I guess it's my instinct to find you when everything starts to fall apart...
Jason shook his head to clear the flashback from his mind. That night with Elizabeth had been like having one single, fleeting wish granted on the grounds that you understood it was a one-time-only offer. He would never do anything to crowd her and she had told him just an hour later that it could only be that one night.
"No regrets," he mumbled.
"What was that?" she asked, handing him a cold bottle of water from her tiny fridge.
"Nothing. I was just thinking out loud. I should go. You need to rest. When is your due date?" he asked.
She was glad that he brought up a neutral topic. If she could engage him long enough, he would drop his guard and she would be able to convince him to stay.
"She's due to arrive on May 13th," Liz said, bestowing one of her beautiful smiles on him and placing a hand on top of her belly.
"She? So you know it's a girl?" he asked. The wistful look in his eyes made her heart ache and she quickly looked away before he could read the desire to tell him the truth within her own.
"Yep. Cam's going to have a little sister to protect," she said, trying to sound perky while swallowing over the lump in her throat.
Jason smiled. A girl. A daughter. How great would that be? Jason's only experience with girls was with Kristina, but the times that she'd run to him and thrown her arms around his neck and squeezed him tightly had made it clear that having a girl would be a wonderful experience.
Liz turned around just in time to see the soft smile that graced Jason's face. Her heart skipped a beat.
"Jason, there is something you should...Oh!"
Her words were cut off by a terrific cramping in her stomach. She'd been having back spasms for a few hours, but had chalked it up to all the walking and the stress of her car breaking down. Now she wasn't so sure. In fact, she was beginning to realize that there was something really wrong.
"Elizabeth?" Jason asked, a concerned look on his face. "Are you alright?"
"No...Oh! Jason I don't know what‘s happening, but something is wrong," she told him, her eyes huge with fear.
“Ok, just stay calm. I’ll get Milo to come pick us up. He can be here in minutes. I’ll get you to the hospital, Elizabeth. Don’t worry,” he told her. His own fear must have shown in his eyes because she still looked terrified.
“I think I’m going to p…” she never finished that sentence as she collapsed. Jason shot up off the sofa and caught her just before she hit the floor.
In an instant he scooped the tiny woman into his arms and raced out the door of the loft, leaving it standing wide open. He moved quickly but carefully down the ten flights of stairs that led to the ground floor of the building.
Looking down into the face of the woman he had loved for longer than he could even remember, he saw that she was pale and too still. He knew he didn’t have time to call anyone to drive them, so he raced off down the sidewalk with her in his arms, heading for the emergency entrance of GH. Mercifully her building was only a few blocks from the hospital.
