"Jethro, do you know why Abby isn't working on her caseload?" Director Shepard strode along, aimed at Gibbs' desk. "I've gotten a dozen complaints from agents who can't get anything out of the lab, even an excuse for why they aren't getting anything."
"I WANT to get to work," Abby said, from the top of the computer monitor, "but he won't let me out of his sight."
Shepard crouched down to look the miniature Goth in the face. Abby looked a little sheepish under the close regard of the agency's director. Gibbs looked on with an ironic expression.
"This is amazing," the woman breathed. "I mean, it's perfect. Right down to the tattoos."
"Cool, huh?" Abby reached down to lift up her t-shirt. "I was worried that I'd loose definition." With one finger, she traced along the design on her lower back. "You know, how when you shrink graphics, the pixels get blocky? I was so glad that didn't happen. You still see sharp tips, right?"
Jennifer reached slowly forward, stopping just before quite touching the black lines on the pale white back. "You're real," she whispered.
"She's really careless, if you ask my opinion," Gibbs said calmly. He pulled off his glasses turned his chair. "Something I can do for you, Jenny?"
She just stared and gestured. Abby looked back and forth between the two. Gibbs extended a fingernail and gently pulled the shirt back down over the bared torso.
Abby stuck her tongue out at him.
"Abby tested the shrink ray on herself," he explained. "Thus the sign." He gestured towards his computer. Jenny turned to see that his screensaver was a sign. "I'm with stupid," it said, with an arrow pointing up to where Abby sat.
"Gibbs!" Magee shouted. "Ziva and Tony disappeared!"
"What?" the three people at, or on, Gibbs' desk asked together.
"It's the NCIS agent at Norfolk. There was a shootout at the motel, now they can't find either of them."
"Grab your gear," Gibbs said, standing and sweeping up his bag.
"I'll watch Miss Sciuto," Jenny offered. Gibbs froze. "What? She'll be fine."
"He's much too protective of me to leave me like this," Abby said, sliding down the face of the monitor.
"What else are you going to do, take her with you?"
----
"Bet you'd like that armpit right about now," Tony said.
"Bit me," Ziva replied.
"It's 'bite me,' Ziva," Tony pointed out. "It's clear, c'mon!" The two of them scurried out from under the trash can and across the sidewalk. Beyond the cement, they ran into the grass of the park. Somewhere in the open area, their quarry had disappeared.
They kept glancing around as they crossed the park, kepping away from the areas illuminated by streetlamps and looked for anything like a tiny naked evil genius lugging a miniature missile and a set of car keys. The survey didn't keep them from the occasional glance at their naked partner, though. Real quick ones, anyway.
"We should have stayed at the motel," Ziva said, not looking at her partner.
"And the local LEO's would only capture us," Tony replied, "stick us in cages, torture us and finally devour us!"
"Oh, they would not!"
"No, not really. That was a fantasy movie, not the incredible shrinking feds. But eventually we'd have to tell Gibbs that the baddy got away."
"Oh. I'd rather they devoured us."
"Yeah." He eased around the trunk of a tree, looking for the mystery woman. "Instead, if we're on her trail, Gibbs'll come find our trail."
"But how long will that be?" Ziva asked from the other side of the trunk.
"Well, it's a six hour drive, so Gibbs should be here in five hours. Four, if the shootout in the parking lot is reported fairly soon."
"And you say _I_ drive badly?"
"Gibbs takes shortcuts on left-handed turns on purpose, not because he doesn't know better. What's that?"
-----
"I'm sure you made the right choice," Tim said. Gibbs looked skeptically over from the passenger seat. "She'll be fine, boss."
"She'll be bored," Abby whined from the glovebox between the seats.
"Play with your magnifying glass," Gibbs said.
"I did," she whined. "I wanna see out the window."
"No," he said. She crossed her arms and sank down against the plastic. Tim eased through the interstate traffic carefully. He was driving because he was so careful. Gibbs didn't want to risk Abby being hurled around by his normal vehicular reflexes. He flinched, though, when Abby cleared her throat.
"From the Halls of Montezoooooo-oma, to the shores of New Jerseeeeeey," she sang out.
"Tripoli," Gibbs corrected her. "Not New Jersey."
" We fight our country's baaa-aattles, in the parking lots we seeeee."
"In the air, on land and sea," he said, raising his voice. She shouted louder.
"First to fight for right and freeeeee-edom, And to keep our bathrooms clean..." In response, Gibbs swung the lid down on top of her box. She couldn't open it, but did manage to force a tiny crack, out which she continued her offenses against the Marine Hymn.
"We are proud to bear the tiiii-itle, Of United States Jar-ines."
"Boss," Magee offered, "she can keep this up for at least two hours." Gibbs just raised an eyebrow questioningly.
"Our flies opened to every breeze, From dawn to setting suuuuuuuuun."
"It's how she got me to take her to the gun range," Tim explained. Gibbs sighed.
"We have fought in every muddy place-." She stopped when the box lid reopened. Gibbs dipped his hand down beside her.
"Shut up and get on," he muttered. She tried not to look too coy as she took a seat in the palm of his hand.
"I want you to know, Special Agent Gibbs, I meant no disrespect to the Corps by my-"
"I said, shut up, Abs," he said. He crossed his legs to lean his knee against the door. It provided a perch for the doll-sized woman to look out the window. Behind her, where she couldn't see, he grinned fondly down at her.
Tim caught the expression, though, and fought to hide a smile of his own. It was his theory that Gibbs appreciated chances to indulge Abby, as long as it didn't look like he was soft on her.
Maybe there was a character he could build on that, he thought. Of course, he couldn't publish the book until Gibbs was dead...
-----
The FBI was waiting when they reached the motel. Yellow tape isolated a guest room, more surrounded a car. Police officers and a couple of men in suits were at various points in the parking lot, searching around with flashlights.
"Gibbs," Agent Fornell welcomed them as they got out of the car. "Understand you had a downsizing in your office."
"What are you doing here, Fornell?" Gibbs asked. Abby leaned out of his coat pocket and waved. Fornell waved back, unsurprised by the tiny technician.
"Hello, Miss Sciuto. Stay low, please, there are cameras around. Gibbs, I'm the last active member of the Featherstone task force. I got here just after your people disappeared."
"What happened?" Magee asked, coming around the car.
"Not sure," he replied, turning to the room. "They talked to the manager, got the room number of the naked guest, and went out. Then she heard gunshots, called the cops, and when she looked out, there weren't any people in sight.
"She did, however, find something interesting." At the door to the cordoned off room were three piles of clothing. The NCIS agents recognized Ziva and Tony's outside the room.
"Featherstone's known for working with two kinds of shrink rays," Fornell said. "One shrinks a person and their effects, one shrinks people out of their effects."
"So, she saw them," Magee theorized, "shot at them, they rushed the room, and she shrank them. Then she took them?"
"Not likely," Fornell said. Magee and Gibbs followed him into the motel room. "Something else you should see here," he pointed to the bed. A suitcase was open. Inside, five odd objects nested in foam packing. A sixth space in the packing was empty.
"These are weapons," Gibbs said.
"Oh, let me see!" He swung Abby over to the bed.
"Don't touch," he cautioned her. With her hands behind her back, she looked the weapons over. "There's an air to air missile, a laser guided bomb, a Tomahawk..."
"I don't see a cruise missile," Magee said.
Gibbs pointed to a cylinder in the middle of the case. "It's still in the launch tube, called an All Up Round," he said.
"Quite the shopping haul," Fornell said.
"It's not a shopping bag," Gibbs said, turning to look around the room. "It's a display case."
"For a salesman!" Abby said, "Or, a saleswoman. She wouldn't have left this behind if she had grabbed Tony and Ziva." The men nodded in agreement. She ran across the bed to Gibbs' hand when he beckoned. Lowered the floor, she started looking around the room, under the furniture.
"Oh," Magee said as he figured out what his boss has meant. "She's not getting everything she can; she's grabbing samples to prove that she can, and probably auctioning her skills to someone. Shrink, penetrate, steal and deliver."
"Exactly," Fornell agreed. "Except she got caught before she got all six."
"Did she?" Gibbs asked, pointing down to the ground. Abby was holding something. The three men knelt to see what she had found under the bed. It was a tiny red disk attached to a cord. None of the men could read it, but they recognized it.
"It says 'REMOVE BEFORE LAUNCH' on it," she told them. "Is that important?"
"It's removed from a weapon, allowing it to arm," Gibbs explained. "There's another missile around somewhere."
-----
About four blocks from the motel, the two tiny agents ran towards a car parked at the curb of the park. Beside the driver's door, a naked woman just as small as they were put down what she was carrying and started pressing at her arm.
Just before they reached her, she suddenly grew up to six foot in height. Tony veered towards the car's front tire, Ziva right behind him. Hiding out of sight from the giantess, they watched her pick up the car keys and the weapon.
"I'll bite her in the calf," Ziva whispered.
"There's nothing vital in the calf," Tony pointed out. "I'll bite her in the calf."
"You make no sense whatsoever," she replied.
----
"Found her car keys," Magee said, holding them out to Gibbs. The team leader looked from the ring to the parking lot.
"Tobias, is that her car out there?"
"Yeah, rented in the same name the woman used to rent this room, why?"
"Then she has a backup car someplace, probably nearby." He grabbed the keyring and started walking out to the lot. He paused to scoop his wayward technician up.
"How the hell do you know that?" Fornell asked.
"These are keys to a Chevrolet," he replied, tapping the rental company tag. Pointing to the lot, he explained: "And that ain't no Chevrolet."
----
"GOD DAMNIT ALL TO FUCKING HELL!" the woman shouted. She finally realized why the key wasn't going into the lock. Now what was she going to do?
Before she could figure out her next step, a sharp pain struck her in the leg. She twisted around to find a tiny naked man holding her there. Blood ran from his lips as he twisted to take another bite out of her calf.
"Bastard!" she said, bending down to strike him. The bending put DiNozzo in her reach, but it also put 'vital things' in reach of the ground. With her attention on the male, she didn't see the female leap from under the car, grabbing one dangling lock of hair.
In a flash, Ziva swung up to kick the woman in her great, big, wide open bulls-eye looking eyeball. Something hit her to the side, but she kept her grip on the hair, swinging back to put her heel into the other eyeball.
The woman staggered, bounced off of the car and fell. Ziva threw herself clear to avoid getting trapped under the body. She spun around on the asphalt and ran along the big woman's body towards the head as it bounced off the roadway.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Tony running in the same direction on the other side. Their opponent was blinded, but still awake. She reached for the point of her arm and pressed it.
She was instantly moved, somehow, a great distance away. Ziva kept running, slowly realizing that things were bigger. Much bigger. She'd been caught in the shrink thing's area of effect again!
The size of a doll's doll, she charged towards an enemy who was the size of a doll...twelve times as tall as the two feds.
----
Magee drove while Gibbs identified the car. He simply held the remote out the window and pressed the horn button until they heard noise.
In the headlights of their and Fornell's cars, they saw that something was under the driver's door. Gibbs put Abby on the road as they knelt close. A naked woman about the same size as Abby lay unconscious on her back, bleeding from eyes and nose.
Beside her was a missile nearly as big as she was, and sitting on the missile were two terribly tiny people.
"Guys!" Abby shouted, sweeping the two up into her arms. "You're all right! I was so worried!"
"Why worry?" Tony asked, fighting to take a breath in the gigantic hug. Well, relatively gigantic. Magee's head loomed across the sky, a giant's giant.
"Yeah," Ziva agreed, "We had everything under control."
-----
"Look," Tony said, holding his hands up defensively, "I'm glad you brought the shrink ray, I'm glad you shrank my clothes, and I'm glad you're taking care of us while we're this tiny, but no."
"Awwww, Tony, please?" Abby pleaded. She crouched at one end of the glove box, across from Tony and Ziva.
The FBI agent had taken possession of the criminal, the weapons and the shrink ray somewhere inside her arm, but allowed Gibbs to take his people to the OSI size laboratory personally.
They weren't sure how to activate the imbedded tech, so they weren't going to try. Well, Abby was willing, but no one else was.
"Please, what?" Gibbs asked from way above all their heads.
"Tony won't play Ken and Barbie with me and Ziva."
"Ziva will?"
"Well, I haven't asked her, yet," Abby admitted.
"It's six hours to DC," Gibbs pointed out. He glanced over at Magee in the driver's seat. "Maybe seven. I'm sure you can talk them into it."
He leaned back in his seat as Abby started to sing. "From the Halls of Montezoooooo-oma...."
