McCoy had been gleeful in the prospect but to no one's surprise turned gloomy once he had two dozen specimens to investigate.
Spock met with the department head soon after the capture. He had Midshipman Saavik following him that day, recording the dispositions of the captives.
"I'm just not sure I can learn anything from dissecting the Lilliputians," McCoy was saying.
"Lilliputians?" Spock asked.
"From an Earth Novel," Saavik supplied. "Written in the 18th Century, it describes a nation of diminutive characters. The crew has taken to calling our captives by that collective label."
"I am aware of the source of the term, Midshipman," Spock said. "I was merely unaware that our crew read novels."
"There was also at least one movie made from the book."
"Ah. That would explain it. Anyway, Doctor, the dissection is standard procedure."
"Well, yeah, but damn it, man, I'm a doctor! Not a vet with a small animal practice. Taking these tiny things apart..."
"Then you don't object to the dissection as much as to having to bend down so much and use precision instruments?"
"Well, not exactly, but since you mention it..."
"I would then suggest, Doctor, that you compel one of your captives to perform the actual procedure. Have a nurse film it, you may watch it comfortably from your couch."
"Good idea!" McCoy said. He turned to the stacked cages in the examining room and the miserable wretches therein. "Anyone here trained as a surgeon? Or a butcher?"
"Come," Spock said. Saavik followed him into the passageway. Her brow was furrowed. "You have a question, Mr. Saavik?"
"The dissection, sir. We have acquired their medical databases. We know as much about their physiques as they do."
"And you trust anything that your enemy provides for you?"
"Oh, no, sir. But they didn't know about the Empire. Their databases were for their use. They'd be accurate, wouldn't they?"
"Approximately one hundred and thirty five years ago, the Klingons made their first contact with the Empire. They captured a survey ship. One of the things they learned from the onboard computers was that Vulcans can only tolerate having sex once every seven years."
"What?" The young woman's face registered shock. "That's ridiculous!" They entered the turbolift.
"Deck twenty," Spock said. Turning back to his aide for the day he asked, "What do you suppose they did with the information?"
"Oh, well, knowing Klingons, they probably immediately set to raping every Vulcan on... Oh!" she said in surprise.
"Yes. They raped the Security staff. Which placed them in the physical proximity necessary for the Coital Mind Meld." He did not miss the midshipman's reflexive thigh squeezing. All Vulcan officers were highly trained in what the humans called the "Vulcan Death Grip." The full depth of what was transpiring exceeded their grasp, but they were merely humans.
"It would be logically unsound to depend on any possible opponent being less devious than the Empire has been in the past." When the doors opened he strode out and along the hallway. "Besides, Midshipman, I sincerely doubt that the database details how the Lilliputians can best serve the Empire."
A short way down the passage, Lieutenant Chekov was scrolling down an checklist at the entry to the workforce transfer berthing spaces.
"How goes the distribution, Mr. Chekov?"
"Mister Spock! They are, uh, well, all the required quotas have been filled, most of them double-filled. But there are still thousands of the creatures remaining. How will we finish their disposition?"
Lieutenant Uhura stepped out of the berths. She held two of the tiny women, hands wrapped around each at the waist.
"...and in the red corner," she was saying, "a brunette contender! There are only two rules in the Uhura Stadium, folks." She waved the red-headed captive across the sensor pad to open the turbo-lift. It arrived immediately.
Her voice-over never paused. "The first rule, as always, is that the contest is not over as long as both combatants live." She smiled widely as she entered the lift. The doors closed before she could announce the second rule.
"I wonder what the other rule is?" Saavik asked aloud.
"Knowing Uhura," Chekov muttered, "it'd be: Kill all you want, but eat all you kill."
Spock nodded as he walked among the cages. "I think you will find, Lieutenant, that the Enterprise has a number of imaginative individuals who will find no end of uses for our captives."
He grabbed a cage, apparently at random, and turned to exit. "Midshipman Saavik will assist you in producing a comprehensive catalog of the remaining Lilliputians. If anyone needs me, I'll be in my quarters."
He held the cage up to his face and glanced at the creature inside. The tiny woman was blonde and slender. She shrank back from the cage wall as she looked into the giant's eyes.
"But," Spock continued, "they had better really, really need me."
