There are 5 stages of grief that everyone goes through. Some of the stages are less predominate than others, but it’s a process that everyone goes through on their way to acceptance. They are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. As the Winchester brothers followed the wispy frame of Eleanor Anderson out on to her back porch it was clear that she was still in stage one.
“Mrs. Anderson,” The elderly woman looked up from her hands at Dean and Sam.
“Yes?”
“Hi. I’m detective Jack Daniels, this is my partner John Walker*, we would like to ask you some questions.” Sam glanced at his brother. He came up with some of the dumbest aliases.
“Alright, please sit down.” The elderly woman offered as she sat back in her wicker chair. Sam thanked her for them as they took the seats offered. “I thought the other detectives were handling James’s case?”
“We’re kinda specialist in this sort of thing.” Dean offer as an explanation.
“Can you maybe tell us what happened the night James died?” Sam asked.
“I don’t know,” She said with a shake of her head, “He said…he was going to see someone. He didn’t say who.”
“Had your son been exhibiting any strange behavior? Anything out of the ordinary?” Sam asked again, trying to sound sincere.
“No, he was a normal boy. He was just visiting from college. I was so worried that he went to school in New York, what with all the crime you hear about. I never thought that he would end up like that here.” The older woman covered her mouth to perhaps stifle a sob.
“Earlier you were in an argument with some women. You said it was their fault. Can you maybe elaborate on that?” Dean asked.
Ellen swallowed her sob and sneered. “Those two! This has to be there fault! James was perfectly safe before he started trying to reconnect with them and now this happens. They cursed my son!” She hissed, and Sam and Dean looked at each other. Apparently Mrs. Anderson had just jumped to stage two. “I told James, they aren’t family anymore after his uncle died, but he wouldn’t listen! I told him they were dangerous.”
“Dangerous? What do you mean dangerous?” Dean asked skeptically. The woman sighed exasperatedly and smoothed her gray hair that led back to her bun.
“They are my nieces, by marriage. My brother Cole married their slut mother when she was knocked up the first time. Alice Corbin,” The woman practically spat the name, “I have nothing to do with them. Those Corbins are nothing but trouble! They got my brother killed too you know.”
“Yeah, ok, let’s go back to dangerous. Why?” Dean asked.
“They’re witches, just like their whore of a mother!”
“Do you have any proof of this?” Dean asked.
“No. But everyone knows about it! You should hear the things people have heard and seen about them. That’s why my husband and I moved here. We didn’t want to be associated with that.”
“Did you see anything of your son’s that looked like it could be black magic? I charm, a mark, something?” Sam asked
“No. James had the mark on his hand but he said he burned himself in a class he was taking. But he did have something that looked odd like it could be that. It was a little pouch on a piece of rope. I don’t know what it was.”
“Do you still have it?” Dean asked.
“No,” She spat, “When James’s things were returned to me, I threw it away. I didn’t want any of that Satan paraphernalia in my house.” She said, straightening her black dress hem.
“Could you maybe give us their names then? Maybe tell us maybe where we can find them to ask them some questions?” Sam asked. The older woman smoothed her hair again.
“Audrey and Nicolet Corbin. They took their mothers name after their parents died,” She said in an uncaring tone, “. They live two towns over with their mother’s family. Her Aunts or something? They took them in after the accident. I think they still live their but who knows. I don’t know where the house is. I made it a point not to go there. You can ask around though, I’m sure someone knows.” She said off handed.
“Alright ma’m. Thank you for your time.” Dean said and he and his brother got up to leave.
“She seems pretty convinced.” Sam said as they walked back to the Impala.
“Seriously. Never seen someone so set that witches killed their kid,” Dean said getting behind the wheel.
“Do you really think they’re witches and put a curse on their cousin?” Sam asked, climbing into his typical spot in the passenger’s side.
“Don’t know. Tell you what though, if I was a witch and I was them, I’d be puttin’ a hex on that snarky bitch. Talk about frigid. It’s a possibility though. They could have traded their cousin for their powers or used him as a sacrifice.”
“That seems pretty cold.” Sam said skeptically.
“Stranger things have happened little bro, but it’s worth finding them for a chat.” Dean said, pulling back on to the street and driving away.
“This wouldn’t have anything to do with you maybe wanting to chat up that blonde again?”
“Hey! Didn’t we just have a talk about how I’m a professional?” The brothers smiled at each other a little as they drove down the road to the next town.
