The Grand Tour

After the excitement had died down and Mal was satisfied that the capitol ship wasn't going to loop around and come back, he invited the two guests to dine with the crew. Mal talked to the Doctor, swapping stories while the rest of the crew listened intently. River Tam seemed particularly interested, hovering around the new arrivals with an amazed look on her face. “So.” Mal said. “You're trying to tell me you have actually met Charles Dickens in person?”

The Doctor nodded. “Yes. Funny story, that. There was this girl. A psychic. She was being contacted by an extinct race called....”

River suddenly interrupted him. “The Bad Wolf and the Oncoming Storm. Finding what's wrong and putting it right. But so sad as well. For all your power and ability to put things right you can't heal the greatest wound in your heart. Timelord. Last of the Timelords.”

“Sorry 'bout her.” Mal said. “She does that sometimes. Starts speaking nonsense 'bout things nobody gets. She's a reader so I reckon she knows things no one should rightly know.”

The Doctor seemed to stare at River like she was the most interesting thing in the universe and then snapped back into a conversational tone. “No need to worry. She's exactly right. Just startled me is all.”

The only one who didn't seem enthralled by the Doctor was Kaylee who had taken to talking to Rose. “Nice to have a lady on board to talk to again. Usually I talk to Inara but we dropped her off on Tartaris before we made this run. We're on our way to pick her back up. Zoe and I don't have a whole lot in common and most of the time River's not the most conversational person in the 'verse so when Inara has a client off-ship I get a mite lonesome. Usually I just sit in the engine room and talk to Serenity.”

“Who is Serenity?” Rose asked.

“You got on this ship and didn't even know her name? This ship is Serenity.” Then she got a twinkle in her eye. “You wanna meet her?”

Rose laughed a little. “Sure. Sounds like fun. Why don't you introduce us?”

Kaylee practically dragged Rose down to the aft of the ship where the engine room was situated. “Here she is. This is Serenity's heart. She's almost like a sister to me.” Rose looked about the engine room in awe, noting the hammock slung across one corner of the room.

“You sleep in here?” she asked.

“Sometimes. I have my own quarters but they're all the way at the front of the ship. And besides, the sound of the engine makes me happy. It's very calming.”

Rose thought about how she felt when she heard the Tardis' engines working. It was almost like a heartbeat. For some reason when she heard those engines she just felt like everything was right with the universe. “I think I know the feeling.” she whispered, running her fingers over the housing on one end of the engine assembly. “Hello, Serenity. Nice to meet you.”

Kaylee sat in the Hammock. “I love her to pieces. We've spent so much time together I can't imagine being without her. I know every bolt and bulkhead. I know her heart and soul. She means the world to me.” Then a thought struck her. “Oh! Why don't you introduce me to your ship? Must be a wonder to sneak on board without us even seein' her.”

Rose smiled at the enthusiastic engineer. “Alright then. I think you're going to be quite surprised with... Her.”

The two girls made their way down to the cargo deck and Rose took her Tardis key out of her pocket. She turned the key and heard the latch click open. “Brace yourself. The first time you see this can be a little overwhelming.” And with that she pushed the door open and Kaylee's jaw dropped.

“Wode ma!” She exclaimed. “It's bigger on the inside!” Rose nodded, smiling at the satisfying reaction. “How do you do that? Get that tiny box wrapped around this huge ship?”

Rose shrugged. “I don't really know. The Doctor explained it to me once but I didn't really understand it. Go ahead and get acquainted with her. Just don't fiddle with any switches or knobs.”

Kaylee stared at Rose with astonishment. “You really are a time traveler, aren't you? That must be so shiny, traveling around in time. Getting to see things that no one has set eyes on in ages. Or even things that never happened yet. Wuh duh ma huh ta duh fung-kwong duh wai-shung dol!”

Rose followed Kaylee into the Tardis and leaned against one of the railings as Kaylee excitedly ran around the control room like a kid in a candy store. “This is amazing! I've never seen tech like this!” She gawked at the various controls and instruments as Rose just smiled at her. “And so many interesting knobs and buttons. Too many for me to keep track of. It must take an absolute genius to fly this thing!”

“Why thank you.” The doctor's voice said from the door. Both girls turned to see the doctor leaning against the door frame.

Rose seemed slightly flustered with his sudden appearance. Like a child who had been caught sneaking cookies. “Oh. Doctor. I hope you don't mind me showing Kaylee the Tardis.”

“Oh, not really. I'm just glad to see you two are getting along so well. Besides it's too late now. Now that she's seen the inside you may as well give her the grand tour. I'll just go talk to the other crew members while you show her around.” The doctor turned to leave but popped his head back in. “Just one rule. Don't go fiddling with anything. I would hate for you to accidentally end up in the 1600 or something with no way back.”

Rose agreed and the Doctor left, leaving her to show Kaylee around. She made a grand show, guiding her awestruck friend around the library and the kitchens and the lounge. Until finally there was only one area of the ship to show her. “And this is my room. It's where I sleep.” Rose opened the door and Kaylee walked into the spacious and beautifully decorated bedroom suite.

Kaylee's eyes sparkled as she walked around the room, taking in every last detail. Then when she had explored the room thoroughly she sat on Rose's bed. “It's beautiful. A lot bigger and prettier than mine.”

Rose sat beside the young engineer. “It's still a wonder. Every night I go to bed and think about all that happened that day. Everywhere we went and all the things we saw. It's like one long dream.”

Kaylee's hand reached over and laid itself on top of Rose's. “Sounds amazing. I'd love to see for myself.”

“It's never boring. That much is for sure.” Rose said, reminiscing over her life since she had met the Doctor. “You never know what's going to happen next. I wouldn't trade it for anything.”

“That's gotta be the most wonderful life in all the 'verse.” Kaylee said reverently. And without warning she leaned in and pressed her soft lips against Rose's.
