Chapter 2
On a stormy sea of moving emotion
Tossed about I'm like a ship on the ocean
-Carry On My Wayward Son
Kansas
Sitting at Bobby’s cluttered kitchen table, Dean winced and put a hand to his side where his ribs hurt the worst after he had moved wrong, pulling them. Broken and bruised ribs hurt like a friggen’ bitch! He had dealt with a lot of injuries over his time but the worst were always when it had to do with his ribs. He was just thankful that they had healed enough that he was over the it-hurts-to-even-friggen’-BREATHE stage. That had left him in agony for DAYS and there wasn’t a damn thing that anyone could do about it. So, rather than be out trying to keep Lilith from breaking the damn seals, he was down for a week or so, camped out at Bobby’s, trying to recover. Taking a pull of his cold brew, he winced as that especially sore spot pulled once again. Friggen’ Samhain! The bastard! Oh yes, he had gotten his ass kicked in that mess, he would admit to it. Worst part though? He hadn’t been able to save the seal. Samhain had been released and the seal was broken. Only good thing was that he had been able to send the bastard back to hell where he belonged and the angels didn’t waste the town like they had threatened to do. Then, afterwards, he had learned it was a test of him under war-like conditions or some such crap. Like he needed a damn test! Oh yes, he was pissed! He didn’t like that Uriel asshole to start with and Cas… well, Cas he wasn’t sure about anyway. Sure, he trusted him but there was something off. He couldn’t put his finger on what it was but he didn’t like it. Sitting his beer on the table, idly picking at the label while Bobby was in the other room rummaging around looking for something, Dean let out what could only be described as a dejected sigh. Honestly, he needed Sam, more than he realized at first. If these were normal hunts, he could do them himself but what was coming after them was nastier and more powerful than anything he had faced in the past. That damned buruburu he had faced just before this whole Samhain/seal-breaking mess was testament to that! He had actually been useless because of it, infected with that damn ghost disease. Bobby had to take care of the mess for him or he could have died. No, that wasn’t good. If Sam had been there, he would have had someone to watch his back and to help handle the problem. Same with Samhain. Instead, he had to try to go it alone and it hadn’t worked out well. Rubbing his eyes in a weary way, he glanced over at Cas, who was sitting across the table looking through a book Bobby had set there. The angel was a big help when he was around but, because of everything going on, he wasn’t around much. He had his own fish to fry, Dean knew that. It had been three months since Sam had vanished, seemingly into thin air. Despite his skills at hunting and finding things, he couldn’t pick a damn trace of his brother or where he had gone. After a week of tearing up that damn town, he had to admit defeat. Wherever Sam had gone, or how he had managed to vanish, was beyond him. He couldn’t find a trace of him anywhere or anyone that had seen him after their last appearance together. He had even gone so far as to use one of Sam’s tricks to try to track him down; using the GPS on his cell phone. But his little brother was one step ahead of him there…he had the phone disconnected and destroyed the card in it, making it untraceable and unusable for that purpose. That, really, had been his best hope. Though he vowed not to give up finding his little brother, and giving him the righteous asskicking he deserved for pulling this stunt, he couldn’t just sit around and wait to see if Sam turned back up or some clue about where he might have gone came to light. Seals were breaking and there were evil things that needed ganked. So, he had moved on to the next hunt. First thing he had done after that was to enlist Cas to try to help him find his missing brother. If he figured it right, he could have Cas out hunting for Sam while he went on jobs, that way both things could get done. Plus, with the powers Cas had, he assumed he could find him. The way he figured it was that Sammy couldn’t hide himself from an angel; they had ways of finding anyone on the planet. Wrong! Whatever his brother had done, he was completely invisible to the angelic faction of the war, he assumed the demonic as well but wasn’t sure on that end. Cas didn’t know how that was possible unless Sam had learned about Enochian sigils, something that would make it impossible for the factions from both sides to find him. With his geek boy brother, that was entirely possible. After all, Sam was great at such things. But that left him unable to find him, thus being on his own, something he learned, quickly, he hated. At first, he thought it might be a good thing to have some time apart, you know, reset things, get a grip and deal. Traveling with Cas had given him some laughs that seemed to make him feel better at first. But that had eventually changed with the next big case he had. Researching, having someone to watch his back, help in doing things… those were all things he found out how much he missed with that damn movie buff shifter he had taken on next. Without Sam there, it was as though he were missing an arm and made things all the harder to do. But there was an upside to the whole thing… About a month after Sam had left, Ruby turned up. Of course, as would be expected, his first instinct was to kill the bitch. He had a sneaking suspicion that she was in on Sam’s vanishing act since it was the kind of thing that she would do. So, if he wanted answers, he couldn’t gank her right away. The surprise, apparently, was on him though. She had shown up looking for Sam. It turned out, with a little help from Cas and his mojo to get the information out of her, that she didn’t know where his little brother was either. He hadn’t talked to her since the night he had vanished into thin air. Though he wanted to gank her on general principles, he hadn’t, thinking that she might, eventually, lead him to Sam or could come up with something he could use that might get him to his brother. After all, she had methods that weren’t available to him or Cas to find things. And, if she were that intent on Sam, for whatever reason she had up her sleeve, she might lead him right to Sam. Then he would gank the bitch. He vowed that he WOULD have that pleasure when this was all said and done. In the end, however, he was just thankful that the black eyed skank didn’t know where his brother was either. Though he didn’t know where Sammy was he did at least know he was OK. The jackass had, at least, kept in contact with Bobby. All it was, apparently, was phone calls to say he was fine and safe but it at least let him know Sam was around. He had, of course, hounded Bobby for information about him, demanding to know what the caller ID gave him so he could trace a location but Sammy was smart. He had gone to those disposable cell phones that couldn’t be traced. He would use them for a short time then, when the money on the card ran out, toss it then get a new one. That meant that no one could trace him that way. Damn kid was too smart for his own good! He hated that there was a lead on Sam but they couldn’t use it. In fact, it drove him batshit crazy! Picking up the bottle, he downed the rest of the beer then stood, gingerly, and went over to get another one. Offering Cas one, something that was declined with a shake of the angel’s head, he then grabbed his laptop and sat down at the table. Bobby looked as though he were going to be a while, digging through the stacks of books that littered almost every available surface in the other room, so he was going to do something to keep himself busy. Booting up the new machine, he waited to get it loaded then connected to the internet. One of the first things he realized was more valuable than he thought after Sammy left was the laptop. Sure, part of that was his subscription to Busty Asian Beauties, he adored that site and couldn’t look it up on a library’s computer. Then there was research… So, yeah, he had to breakdown and buy one. Loading it up, he checked his e-mail then, unable to help himself though he was not able to actually do any hunting, went over and logged into StrangeandSupernatural.com, a website Bobby had hooked him up with. Though, from the front page, it looked like one of those amateur paranormal investigator sites, like the Hellhounds/Ghostfacers ran, it wasn’t. Actually, it was a site run by a hunter Bobby knew. For most that would find the place, they could leave a message on the board about some kind of strange, supposedly, supernatural happening or beasts then talk about their experiences. However, if you were referred by Bobby, as far as he knew Bobby was the only one that could make a referral and get you in, you paid a membership fee, it wasn’t a big one, something easily affordable, then logged into the members area. That was for hunters only. It was a huge message board with detailed analysis of things posted and what might/might not be real. Also there were things from all over that hadn’t made it onto the public message board part. Then, along with that, was a massive research library whereyou could look up almost everything. If it wasn’t there, you sent a request in to the webmaster, someone that went by the screen name WaywardSon. He would then do all the research he could for you and shoot it to your e-mail, all covered in the fee that you paid to join. It was something ingenious as far as Dean was concerned. Not only did it save tons of time, it gave most of what one needed when it came to things like research. Beyond that it had list after list of talismans, charms and other things to protect you from all manner of evil things. You could even buy some of the more complicated ones rather than have to make them yourself. As some could take months to do, that was a huge bonus. The site was great! Though not able to hunt, he was skimming through what was posted by the webmaster and other hunters to see if there was anything close to them, just to keep up with what was going on, when the phone rang. Ear cocked out of habit, he listened but decided it was probably just another hunter looking for some help so he turned back to what he was reading. Finding an interesting case mentioned, he opened his mouth to say something to Cas, glancing over at him but stopped when he saw a very serious expression. Looking back over his shoulder to the room Bobby was in, he then looked at the angel. “What? Did you hear something?” “He’stalking about Asmodeus,” Cas said in an off-handed way, paying closer attention to the conversation. “Asmodeus? Who the hell is that?” Dean asked, confused, looking between Cas and where Bobby was. “A demon, a very powerful one,” Cas replied, distracted. “If Asmodeus is on earth we have a big problem.” “What? Does he have something to do with a seal?” Dean inquired, already itching to hunt though he knew that he wasn’t in any shape to do so. “No, no seal but it’s a troubling issue if he’s here,” Cas answered vaguely, brow furrowing as he tried to pick up the voice on the other end of the phone, “How troubling? Minor chaos troubling or massive destruction troubling?” With Cas, troubling usually was an understatement with consequences he wouldn’t like. Focusing back on Dean, the angel said, “Asmodeus is Lilith’s son.* He’s the progeny of a coupling between Lilith and the angel Samael. That makes him one of the princes of Hell, governing lust.” Feeling the hair stand up on the back of his neck slightly at the thought of a part demon, part angel, Dean’s eyes widened then he said, “This can’t be good! Would he be here to help Lilith?” “Probably,” Cas said, brow furrowing as he once more focused on Bobby. Well, not so much Bobby but the voice on the other end of the phone. Scrubbing a hand across his face, he didn’t know whether to be worried about this Asmodeus demon or get irritated with Cas for his distraction. Right now, he was going to go for getting information. “Cas!” He snapped, trying to get his undivided attention. Not looking at Dean but paying attention to Bobby, Cas said, off-handedly, “He’s talking to Sam.” Eyes widening, Dean asked, “Sam? As in my Sam?” “Yes,” Cas nodded. Galvanized, Dean was out of his chair and headed for Bobby as fast as he could. Snatching the phone away, ignoring Bobby’s protest, he barked into it, “Sam! Is that you? Talk to me, dammit! I’m so going to kick your ass for this stunt, dude!” Stopping, he waited to see if he was going to get a response but all he heard was someone taking a deep breath before the sound of the call disconnecting.
Sitting in his computer chair, elbows resting on his knees, Sam looked down at the now shut cell still clutched in his hand, heart pounding. It was the first time that he had heard his brother’s voice in a couple months. Boy, it felt good but it also was making the guilt he felt over leaving and the whole other mess resurface. When he had called, he had wanted to give Bobby the heads up on what he had found about Asmodeus so that he could put the warning out. From all he was hearing, the massive evil was, indeed, on earth and would be causing chaos. From the way Bobby talked, he could tell that someone was there and he couldn’t say too much. That was fine, as long as the old hunter knew what he had called about, he would get back to him when he had time so they could hash it out and see if Bobby couldn’t find someone to take on the half angel/half demon. However, he didn’t expect for the person there to be Dean. That had thrown him. Sighing, he ran his fingers through his hair and tried to think. Part of him knew to just leave it alone. He had caller ID block on his pay-as-you-go cell so Dean couldn’t get the caller ID and callback. Nor did the * trick with the phone pad work to do a ringback. Bobby wasn’t about to give up his number to Dean either, he knew that. But that meant that the old hunter was going to get shit unlimited from his brother about this. He didn’t like putting his friend in that position. Leaning back, he tossed the cell onto the desk then turned around and stared at the computer screen, looking at the pages of research he had open on Asmodeus. Pulling up the one document he had been referring to, he found that he couldn’t focus on it. Since leaving Dean, research and setting up his website, had been the two things he could delve into that would keep him sane, well relatively anyway. They were his refuge like booze was from time to time. All he had to do was delve into it and he was lost for hours, forgetting his problems. It didn’t work this time though. All he kept thinking about was how mad Dean had to be with Bobby. Sure, the old hunter was more than a match for his brother but he didn’t like the feeling that he had been drawn into this through no fault of his own. Glancing at the cell once more, he debated on calling back. It was better for Dean to go off on him rather than Bobby. Sure, if he did that, there would be questions he wouldn’t be answering or reasons not given as to the why of the whole thing, more stuff that would drive Dean over the edge, but it might diffuse the situationwith Bobby, a little anyway. Picking up the phone, he flipped it open and checked the minutes remaining on it. He had plenty of time to talk before the card ran out. Sighing, he scrolled through the contacts section before stopping on Bobby’s number. Stopping, he pulled it up but didn’t dial, still wondering if he should or not. Thumb rubbing over the call button, he tried to decide if injectinghimself into something he knew that Bobby could handle was worth the hell he would bring down on himself if he did. After a couple moments, he stuck the ear piece in then hit call and waited, eyes shut, heart pounding. When Bobby answered with a brusque ‘what’, he asked, quietly, “Dean’s pissed, isn’t he? Giving you all kinds of hell?” “Yes and right now isn’t a good time,” Bobby replied shortly, glaring at the enraged Dean. Sighing, Sam shook his head then said, quietly, “I’m sorry, Bobby. I didn’t mean to stick you in the middle like this.”
Pacing back and forth, shooting Bobby glares, Dean couldn’t believe this! Sam had called and Bobby didn’t tell him! Not only that, Sam had hung up on him. Oh, he wanted to tear up some ass! Part of him, the part that was still rational despite the heat of his anger, felt bad that he was taking it out on Bobby but,God dammit, he was mad! He had been going nuts thinking about Sam and he called then no one said anything to him. When Bobby got another call, the older Winchester glared at Cas then asked, quietly, “Is there any way for you to figure out where he is now? Through the call?” He figured that was a long shot at best but it couldn’t hurt to ask. Staring at Bobby over Dean’s shoulder, the angel shook his head once then said, voice its normal deadpan, “No. Whatever Sam’s done, he’s made sure to hide himself in such a way that I can’t sense him. It’s as though he’s dropped into a void.” Figuring it wouldn’t work but having had to try, Dean just nodded, shooting a glare back at Bobby, waiting for him to finish so that he could go on with his rant. No, it wasn’t going to do him any good but he would feel better when he was finished. Really, right now, he just wanted to talk to Sam, nothing more. Any yelling could come after finding out that his brother was safe. Well, he knew the yelling would come. He had gone through hell on earth since he had left and there would be payback for that. Once Bobby was off the phone he would talk him into calling Sam so that he could at least try to talk to him. It might not work but he could give it a shot. Scrubbing a hand over his face, he waited, staring at Bobby, trying to calm himself down. It wasn’t going to do any good to yell at the older man. He would just yell back, digging his heels in. Then, if that happened and he ended up really pissed, he wouldn’t learn anything. No, it was best to calm down then reason with him. Trying to be patient, and not succeeding well, he just waited. Then, when Bobby held the phone out and said it was Sam, both his eyes widened in shock. Before the old man could change his mind or his brother had a chance to rethink things then hang up once more, he was across the room, snatching the phone away. Putting it to his ear, he said, tone stunned, “Sammy?”
*The mythology surrounding Lilith and Asmodeus is so vast and varied that it’s hard to determine anything because most don’t agree on much of anything. When it comes to Lilith, since the show doesn’t cover just what her origins are other than the first demon, I’m going with the old chestnut of her being Adam’s first wife then moving on to other things that come with it. The reference to Asmodeus comes from one of the many legends about him, saying he was born to Lilith through her relationship with either the arch angel Sameal or a human. For the purposes of this story, I’m going with the angel angle; though that may not agree with some of what you know.
