Chapter 2:
FBI Basement Office of Mulder and Scully Mulder is leaning back in his chair looking up at the ceiling covered with pencils. Thinking about the morning briefing he is mentally going over the case they are currently working on. His thought wanders to the contracted specialist working on the case with them. “Hey Scully, what do you want to bet that Skinner has a huge hard on for that Maya Hernandez they brought in for the case?” Scully rolls her eyes. “Mulder, leave it to you to have your mind in the dirt. So what if he does. I’m sure he is due to meet someone nice. Let’s drop it please. I don’t feel comfortable thinking about Skinner in that way. Let alone talking to you about it.” Mulder smirks and turns his attention back to the ceiling. He then suddenly sits up straight and leans forward looking at Scully. “What? Mulder, whatever is going on in your brain right now you can just forget about it.” Scully says aware that Mulder is scheming by the way he is looking at her. “Aw, come on Scully. You haven’t even heard what I’m going to say. Hear me out.” Mulder presses on without letting Scully speak. “Let’s say, you and I suddenly have another huge case we need to work on and just don’t have the time to sit with Ms. Hernandez. Ole Skinner will have to step in to oversee her progress during the time that she is here. You know, give him a chance to work his charm on the young lady.” “Mulder, let’s say, and at this point it is only hypothetical, that Skinner does take over monitoring Ms. Hernandez in our absence. What makes you think that he is even interested in her? This may be all a waste of time and to top it off it will make for one pissed off A.D. to have to rearrange his schedule to sit with the woman that he may or may not be interested in. Besides I don’t think that our boss has it in him to make a pass at a woman who is reporting to him for a case, even if she isn’t an agent. Think about it Mulder.” Scully shakes her head and looks back down at the report she is working on. “Yeah, I suppose you’re right.” Mulder sits back in his chair again. “But Scully you should of seen the way he was watching her in the briefing this morning. I’m telling ya, the man has a huge hard on for her.” Scully looks up in shock at Mulder. “Fine, whatever Mulder. If you can come up with a case that precedes this current case you can test your theory. But I am staying out of it and if Skinner calls me in on this case I am not making any excuses. You got it?” Mulder smiles and nods. “You’ll see Scully. We could possibly have the Skin-mans future happiness in our hands.” Scully scoffs and shakes her head again. She goes back to her report nervously looking back at Mulder not sure if she made the right decision to back down. FBI Computer Crimes Lab 2:30 pm Maya leans back in her chair stumped staring at the screen before her. Still going through the first hard drive she began working on this morning she is perplexed by the encryption method that is being used on the data within the drive. It is nothing that she has ever seen before and is starting to wonder if this is a task she can handle. She scolds herself for that thought and looks over in the A.D.’s direction. He is paging through a thick case file and by the look on his face he isn’t happy by what he sees. She continues to watch him noticing the furrow on his brow and how his mouth is formed into a scowl. She begins to wonder what type of person he is outside of the office. Does he go home to a wife and kids? Does he become a soccer Dad or a Boy Scout troop leader after work? Somehow she can’t imagine him doing either of those things. She looks at his left hand and notices there isn’t a wedding ring. Based on his well-maintained physique she imagines he probably heads to the gym after work, probably with his buddies or a girlfriend. The thought somehow bothers her. A man like this must have women throwing themselves at him. An FBI Assistant Director who looks the way he does, she thinks to herself, probably has a woman in his life. She sighs deeply and looks back at the screen before her. There is suddenly a knock at the door and Mulder enters the lab. Skinner looks up and the scowl returns to his face when he sees Mulder. “Sir, is this a good time?” Mulder says. “Good a time as any Agent Mulder.” Skinner growls back. “Sir, I know this isn’t the most convenient time for this but a new case has presented itself to the X-Files and I have a few time sensitive leads that I think Scully and I should follow up on. I know that you needed us to assist on this case but…” Skinner interrupts Mulder mid-sentence. “That’s fine Agent Mulder. Notify me upon your return. I can handle this in your absence.” Mulder’s raises an eyebrow. “Are you sure it won’t be a problem sir? I know you needed Scully and I to sit with Ms. Hernandez during her time here and I know how busy you are.” “It’s no problem Mulder. I think I can manage this case in your absence. Now if that is all, you may be dismissed.” Skinner looks at the younger man almost challenging him. Mulder nods and turns to leave. He quickly glances over at Maya and notices that she had been watching their exchange. As he walks out he thinks to himself, “Don’t say I never did anything for ya Skin-Man.” A smirk crosses his face with a knowing look. As Mulder walks out of the room Skinners mind starts racing. He feels a sense of relief that he will have more time to spend with Ms. Hernandez, Maya. Maya. He thinks how that name fits her. But now that he has this time what will he do with it. Should he ask her out? What if she isn’t interested, then he will be stuck sitting with her until her contract is over. He could ask her to dinner when the case is over, but what if she isn’t from around here. Well, old man, I suppose you should find a little bit more about her. He looks over at her. She is staring at the computer monitor, every now and then jotting down notes. “How’s it coming along?” he says. Maya looks over. “Do you want the truth?” “That bad, huh?” “Well, I wouldn’t say bad. Challenging, yes. I have never seen anything like this. But I have a few ideas on how to crack the code. I will need to run a series of tests. I have a feeling that there is more than one encryption method being used. But if I can crack one I think it will be the key to the others.” She then grabs the case file next to her and sets it in front of her placing her hands on top of the file. “Sir, if I may be blunt with you. This is one heck of a case. Coming into this I would have never imagined anything like this. I would hope this type of case isn’t a common occurrence.” She is looking at him trying to read his face as she speaks. “Well, Ms. Hernandez, unfortunately this case is extremely common to our X-Files division. You need to be prepared for what you find on those hard drives. I would suggest reading through the case file and absorbing its contents the best that you can.” Skinner watches her for a reaction. She gives none. “I have one request from you Sir, if you don’t mind, during my time here if you would call me Maya, at least during our time in the lab. I understand the formalities but it would make me feel more comfortable.” She gives him a small smile that immediately melts his heart. “I think I can honor that request…Maya.” Suddenly feeling shy Skinner tries to think of something, anything, he could ask her. What does she do for fun, where does she live, is she seeing any one? Maya takes his thoughts to himself as annoyance with her and turns back to her work. Feeling slightly awkward she thinks she has overstepped a line with this man and is at a loss as to how to fix it. She then decides that she is bound and determined to get this man to open up to her. She always considered herself to have a talent in breaking through to the toughest and arrogant of men in her line of work. Why should an FBI Assistant Director be any different? Besides she has a feeling that if given a chance to crack the hard out shell of said Walter Skinner, she will find something incredible underneath. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
