Chapter 2:
FBI Headquarters - Thursday 1:15 PM Tessa sat leaning back in her chair at her desk, rolling her pen back and forth between her thumb and middle finger. Her mind had been preoccupied all morning with her encounter with the Assistant Director the evening before. She knew she had coyly left the conversation open ended with an invite for them to get together to ride sometime. She wondered if she had caught his attention at all with that statement and if he would even be remotely interested in spending any time with her. If it weren’t for the fact that he was an Assistant Director she probably would have asked him out directly. The second he said he had a Road King her heart jumped. Tall, handsome and a biker. The thought made her smile to herself. Although she had never worked with Skinner directly she had assisted a few of the agents under him on various cases. Suddenly Fox Mulder came to mind as someone who might be able to give her some insight into the way his boss thought and maybe some unbiased advice on whether she should just ask the man out directly. She picked up her phone and dialed his number down in the basement office. “Fox Mulder” “Mulder, its Tessa.” “Tessa! Hey. I knew you couldn’t resist my charms for long.” “Oh Mulder, you are ever so hard to resist. I was wondering if you had a sec, I want to come down and ask you about something.” “Well, if it is for my hand in marriage then the answer is yes. Come on down Davis.” “Bye Mulder.” Tessa hung up the phone shaking her head. She liked Mulder for the fact that he was easy to talk to and had a head full of information he was always ready and willing to share. The two had an instant liking to each other mainly due to the fact that Tessa could dish back whatever smart-ass remark he threw at her. That was the extent of her interest in Mulder though. Tessa knew the man was head over heels for his partner. Now whether the feelings were reciprocated is another story. When Tessa reached the basement office, Mulder was alone with his feet propped up on his desk and a magazine in his lap. “I see your hard at work, as usual, Mulder.” “Just catching up on some light reading” He showed her the magazine title ‘Paranormal Today’. “Nice.” Tessa pulled up an empty chair to his desk and sat facing him. “There is something I want to pick your brain about but you have to promise not to laugh Mulder.” Knowing all too well he would do just that. “All right Davis, spill it already.” He said setting down the magazine. “I’m not one to mince words so I’ll come right out. I need your advice on the best approach for me to go about asking A.D Skinner out on a date.” She saw him choke and sit up straight in his chair. “Whoa! What? Davis I know I didn’t just hear what I thought I did.” “Come on Mulder. I’m serious.” She gave him her best I’m serious look but couldn’t help smiling. “Not Skinner, as in Walter Skinner but some other Skinner, right?” “No. Walter Skinner. Your boss. Tall, bald, sexy…” “I don’t know if I can take this Tessa. You and Skinner? Really?” Mulder shook his head in disbelief. “I think he is interested in me too but I don’t think he would ever ask me out. So I’d like to make the first move.” She filled him in on their brief conversation from the night before. All the while Mulder was trying to wrap his head around what Tessa Davis could possibly see in his boss. The same man who yells at Mulder at least a couple times a week. Granted Mulder often tempts fate knowing he will get yelled at but still. “All right. Let’s see.” Mulder started and then looked at Tessa for a moment thinking about what advice he could possibly give her. “Now, I’m no expert on dating or Skinner for that matter but I think I might have some ideas. You say you ended the conversation with an invitation to ride together some time. I say continue that the next you see him. Ask him if he is ready for that ride yet.” “I was thinking that to.” “You are a pretty straight forward person. I think he could appreciate that. I think. Tessa, he’d be a fool to say no to you.” “I guess there is only one way to find out. Thanks for the advice Mulder.” Tessa got up to leave. “So I guess our love was never meant to be, now that I know you have eyes for the Skin-man, huh?” “I will always have love for you Mulder. Let me know when you are ready for my advice regarding your partner.” And with that Tessa walked out of the basement office. As Tessa was heading back to her office she didn’t expect the topic of her conversation to board the elevator with her. It was as if fate had placed its answer right at her doorstep. Skinner rolled his neck feeling the tension release after sitting through an hour and half meeting with the Director. As he stood waiting for the elevator he was surprised to see Tessa Davis standing there as the doors opened. He entered and turned to face the doors standing on the opposite end of the elevator. His mind racing he wanted to say something to her and then. “Ms. Davis you’ve inspired me to take out the bike again.” He said still looking straight ahead as the elevator doors closed and moved into motion. He could sense her turn her head to look at him. “Give me a call when you do. The weather’s supposed to be nice this weekend.” She handed him her card with her cell phone number giving him a sweet smile before she exited the elevator that had now arrived on both of their floors. He watched her walk off and looked down at the card she handed him. Swallowing hard he realized she had just asked him out. He was brought back to the present when the elevator doors began to close and he quickly caught the doors to exit. Skinner sat at his desk looking at the business card Tessa Davis handed him. He slid his finger along the edges of the card and then slid the card into his front shirt pocket. Grabbing a pen and a notepad he started jotting down notes. Replace plugs Wax Chrome Oil change Tessa Davis’s Apartment - Thursday 10:00 PM Tessa pulled into her parking spot and dismounted her Triumph. She liked to head out of the city as often as she could after work to distress from the day. Tonight it was pleasantly warm and she enjoyed the longer days that mid-June brought with it. She had placed the ball in Walter Skinner’s court today and hoped he would make a play and call her this weekend. On her ride tonight she thought about a few places they could ride and catch something to eat. She wanted to have a plan unless he had something else in mind. She hoped he would call and if he didn’t, well, Tessa wasn’t one to give up that easily. She entered her building and bound up her steps to her apartment on the 2nd floor. Tearing off her clothing she stretched standing completely nude in the middle of her apartment. She walked into her kitchen and opened the fridge hoping that food would miraculously appear since she hadn’t had the time in days to go grocery shopping. She knew she should have stopped somewhere on the way home but when she was on her bike it always seemed to slip her mind. She grabbed a half empty bottle of water and pulled out a bag of stale pretzels from a cabinet. Plopping herself onto the couch she sprawled out and turned the TV on which she didn’t actually watch but used more for background noise. As she lay there staring at the ceiling, she heard her cell phone vibrate next to her on the coffee table. “Tessa Davis.” She answered with her mouth partially full of pretzels. “What are you wearing?” A male voice breathed on the other end. “A bag of stale pretzels and nothing else, hi Mulder.” She had left a message for him after her encounter with Skinner on the elevator to thank him again for his advice. “So, did you get the impression that he would call? And, how big or small is this bag of pretzels?” He could hear her eating and the sound of a bag crackling on the other end. “I think I caught him off guard. I hope that works in my favor but I can’t really say. The bag is average size.” She shoves a couple more pretzels in her mouth. “Well, be easy on the guy if he does call. He probably hasn’t had a date in years and a young hot thing like you coming onto him may just knock him over. Only the bag, huh?” “Well, that is the plan Mulder. Nothing but the bag, now empty I might say.” She crumples the bag and tosses it on the coffee table. “Wow. You sure you want to date Skinner? I can come over right now.” “Dream on Mulder. Got to go. Thanks again.” She hung up to a moan on the other end, tossing the phone aside. Smiling to herself she thought about what Mulder had said about knocking Skinner over if she came onto to him. Don’t mind if I do, she thought to herself as she drifted off. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
