((And now we're back to the present. Enjoy!
@Kuragari: Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying it!)) “Cap’n?” Camille waved a hand in front of James’ face, smiling and giggling. James blinked rapidly, shaking his head. “What?” He faked inattentiveness. Camille rolled her eyes, lightly punching him in the arm. “You do that just to spite me, don’t you?” She pouted. James shrugged. “Eh, maybe.” Camille sighed and shook her head. “Actually, I was spacing out that time. What’d you need?” He rubbed his eyes, pushing that particular memory to the back of his mind. That had been over two years ago; why was he remembering that now? “I asked if we’d be setting down on Whitefall or not.” She crossed her arms, cocking her hip to the side as she’d been known to do since he’d met her. “Yeah. It’ll be a good place to refuel and stock up; we got a ways ahead of us before the next drop.” Camille nodded, turning on her heel to head back to the cockpit. James sipped at his coffee again, stretching and finally standing to refill it. “I’m just sayin’… Might do you some good to wander around planet side for a spell. Maybe we can actually keep the grease off your face for a day.” He heard Camille teasing their young mechanic. “That ain’t gonna matter! I don’t know where half of it comes from!” Poor Kit sounded exasperated, but she knew Camille was only teasing her. James smirked; those two were a barrel of fun to listen to, but he did want to be in the world before now. “Somebody’s gonna get their ass beat if we’re not planet side within the hour.” He raised his voice, hearing Camille giggle before running back up to the cockpit. “Child abuse is illegal, you know.” A voice came from his left, and he didn’t even have to look up to know whose it was. “Nah, it just builds character. I’m a mean old man; I’m supposed to keep the young’ns in line.” He finished pouring the coffee before looking up at the merc leaning against the counter next to him. “You probably got a few swatchings as a kid, eh Kyle?” A smirk was on the young man’s face. “Nobody was ever stupid enough to try.” Kyle chuckled. “Probably why you’re so fucked up now.” James took another gulp of his coffee as the younger man outright laughed. “Nah. There’s reasons a-plenty for that, but that ain’t one of ‘em.” Kyle took a long swallow of his own coffee. James smirked, rubbing his eyes. He hadn’t gotten very much sleep last night, and it was trying to take a toll on his body. He sighed heavily. “We’ll be setting down on Whitefall soon. If there’s any supplies you’re itchin’ to get, best do it here. We won’t stop again until we hit Persephone.” Kyle nodded, mentally ticking off the people he should probably see for supplies. “Thanks for the heads up Cap’n. Do the others know?” James blinked a few times before pushing away from the counter and heading to the cockpit. He could hear Kyle’s chuckle, but chose to ignore it. Camille was flipping a few switches to prepare for hitting atmo when James walked over and grabbed the comm. from up above her. “Good mornin’ crew. It’s still morning, right? Anyway, we’ll be setting down on Whitefall within the hour here…” Camille cut him off. “More like in twenty minutes.” She said bemused. James ruffled her hair and she pouted. “Like I said, within the hour. So if there’s anything you need, best get it here. We won’t be stopping again until we hit Persephone to drop off the goods.” He put the comm. back up and Camille turned to him. “Persephone? That’s a bit risky, ain’t it?” She voiced her concern for Kyle and Alyssa. James sighed. “Ain’t nothing we can do. You’re going with me to make the drop, and the others are gonna stay confined to the ship so they don’t attract attention.” She nodded. “Makes sense. So it’ll be just like old times, huh?” She smiled, and James chuckled. “Yeah, way back when, huh? When it was just you and SHIP!!!” Camille whipped around to see that they were headed straight for another ship. “Fuck!” Camille screamed as she veered quickly to the left, narrowly avoiding collision. She looked white as a sheet and James’ knuckles were whiter as he gripped the back of Camille’s chair. From behind them, they could hear a loud thud of a body hitting the ground followed by a very male sounding string of Chinese. “What the hell just happened?” Kyle rubbed his arm where he fell. “Camille just tried to crash us.” Camille was about to retort when Kyle laughed. “So what else is new?” He started running then, knowing he was in for it. Camille shouted indignantly before jumping up and out of her chair. “Ni zhao si ma?! Ni yao wo kai qiang?![1]” She half-shouted, half-laughed as she tried to run out of the room. James grabbed the back of her cropped t-shirt and held her back, and she fell backward onto her butt. She crossed her arms over her chest, pouting as she looked up at him. “Fly now, fuck later.” Her face turned redder than a tomato, and she was damn glad Kyle wasn’t there to hear that. She sputtered before James walked out of the cockpit, grinning broadly. Once Kyle had realized she wasn’t gonna chase him, he’d stopped near the end of the hallway to the crew dorms. James smirked at the young man, shaking his head. “You just love getting a rise out of her, don’t you?” Kyle shrugged. “It’s amusing, if nothing else.” James laughed out loud at that. “Better watch it. One of these days she really might kill ya.” He joked. Kyle smirked and shook his head, muttering something under his breath that James couldn’t hear as he walked off. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Camille had been right about the ETA; they touched down not twenty minutes later at a refueling station. James stayed with the ship, Kyle made way to get his foodstuffs, and the three girls decided it would be better to get out together to get what they needed. Camille only really needed cat food for Luna, but she also got a few toys for her, too. Kit needed a few small parts for the engine, and a new set of pliers; the pair she’d had broke, and she would blush and avoid answering whenever they asked her what happened. Alyssa was running low on some supplies in the med bay; mainly disinfectant and bandages and the like. She wasn’t exactly happy with the selection on Whitefall, seeing as how it was a rim world and wasn’t well-stocked, but they were able to get enough to at least tide them over until Persephone. “I’ll get you some better stuff when we get on Persephone. The Cap’n wants you and Kyle to stay on the ship.” She really didn’t need to explain why, and Alyssa smiled. “Thank you.” She said, feeling the barest hint of guilt. Being wanted by the Alliance made things trickier than she felt was warranted, but she couldn’t change what happened, as much as she wanted to. They wasted the rest of their time window shopping, not really buying anything so much as looking and making comments. Kyle eventually found them as they were looking at some pretty polished rocks. “I’ve got what I need. You girls ready?” Camille nodded. “We’re done. Just killing time until the refuel finishes. Should be a little while longer if you wanna walk around with us a bit.” She offered, and Kyle smiled. “Sure thing.” Alyssa inwardly smirked and put a hand on Kit’s shoulder. “Hey, we’re gonna go look at some of the crafts down the way.” Kit looked confused. “But we already looked at those…” She tried, but Alyssa cut her off. “We didn’t look at all of them. Come on.” She all but dragged Kit away to leave Kyle and Camille alone for a moment. Kit was, of course, oblivious to her intentions. Camille and Kyle stood there a little awkwardly as the other two walked away. She finally chuckled. “What?” Kyle asked, smiling and raising an eyebrow. “Nothing. Let’s look some more, yeah?” She said, avoiding answering his question. He let it slide, and they walked down the row, looking at little wood carvings and other such trinkets. A little ways down, Camille picked up a skull, holding it up and putting a hand to her chest dramatically. “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio!” Kyle outright laughed at her silliness. “Ah, Hamlet. I remember reading that one in school.” He rolled his eyes, smiling. Camille couldn’t help but laugh as well. “Oh yeah, you went to a proper school, huh?” She remembered. He nodded, about to say something before the shop-keep shook a finger at them. “Hey! No touch unless you buy!” His accent was thick, and Camille set it back down, still giggling. As they kept walking, Camille’s hand accidentally bumped into Kyle’s, and she blushed, looking away. She wouldn’t have seen it, but Kyle’s ears had started to turn just the slightest bit of red as well. Before they had the chance to do much else, Camille’s handheld comm. beeped. “Yeah, Cap?” She answered. “Refueling’s almost finished. Go ahead and come on back.” He said, and Camille nodded. “Got it. On our way.” She knew Kyle had heard it, but she looked off to see Alyssa and Kit not far off. “Hey, Kit, Alyssa! Cap’n wants us back!” She called out, and the other two ladies nodded, heading towards them. They headed back to the ship, chatting amiably. Once aboard, James met them in the cargo hold. “Alright. We all got what we need?” Everyone nodded. “I need to switch out a few couplings before we fire her up, Cap’n. Won’t take but a minute.” Kit smiled, pushing a bit of hair behind her ear and smearing the grease that somehow got on her face. She went to do so and the others went to put their own purchases away. In the kitchen, Kyle was putting away the food when he heard a meow from behind him. “Hey there, Luna.” He smiled, kneeling down to scratch the cat’s head gently. The white cat started to purr, and he chuckled. She’d taken a liking to everyone on the ship, luckily. Camille came back in and saw him petting Luna, smiling. “She likes you.” Camille said, opening up some of the cat food and putting it in a dish for Luna. The cat left Kyle to go and eat once Camille put the dish down. “She likes everybody.” He mused, finishing putting the perishables in the fridge. ~~~~~~~~~~~ The journey to Persephone was long, but largely uneventful. Camille didn’t almost crash them into any more ships; James was never going to let her live that one down. Down in the cargo hold, Kyle was sparring with Camille, teaching her new techniques and brushing her up on her skills at the same time. It was a little hard for him to pay attention, as she was dressed in workout clothes that were a little skimpy. She came at him, but she was off-balance, and as a result, he was able to get a jab in and throw her nearly across the room. Camille cursed, and Kyle shook his head, wiping sweat from his brow. “You’re still leaning too far over when you come in for the kick. It makes your blind spot huge. Here, watch me again.” He took a stance, nodding at her to make sure she was ready for him as he came at her, his body more fluid as he pivoted on the ball of his foot and delivered the kick to what would have been her solar plexus had she not blocked it with her arms. It wasn’t a full-strength kick, but it was hard enough to knock her back a few feet and give her a better idea of what the move was supposed to look like. She nodded in understanding. “Got it? Alright, try it on me again.” He stood ready and she took her stance, but the tension in her shoulders was glaringly obvious. “Loosen up. You’re too tense. That’s probably the other half of your problem. Take a deep breath and re-center yourself.” He waited for her to do so, rolling her shoulders and neck a few times, and she loosened up quite a lot. He ignored the sweat dripping between her breasts and down her bare, toned stomach. She came at him, mimicking his moves almost flawlessly and she spun on the ball of her foot, delivering a kick to his stomach. He’d blocked it with his arms, but he was knocked back a bit. She was beaming as she came back down. “I got it!” She pumped a fist in the air, and Kyle was trying his very hardest not to watch as her breasts jiggled just the slightest bit. He grinned broadly and gave her a high-five. “Yeah, there you go!” James appeared on the catwalk above them. “You breakin’ my pilot?” He asked, a smile on his face to let them know he was joking. “Not tryin’ to.” Kyle quipped, putting an arm around Camille’s shoulders and giving her a sideways hug. James chuckled and shook his head. “We’re getting close, Cami. I need you up in the pit.” Camille nodded, turning and giving Kyle a real hug. “Thanks, Kyle.” She said before running up the stairs to get showered off. He grabbed a towel nearby and wiped off his face and neck with it, sighing. He was tired, but it was a good tired. He hadn’t sparred like that in a long time; not since Beth had he worked so hard. He and Camille had been going at it all morning, and it was nice to get a break. After Camille emerged from her bunk, showered and dressed, she walked past the engine room to see a pair of small feet sticking out of one of the ventilation shafts. She made her footfalls a little louder so she wouldn’t scare the poor mechanic. “Hey Kit, we clear to break atmo? Don’t wanna shock ya.” She called out. “Yeah, we’re shiny.” She noticed Kit wiggling, and she heard small grunts coming from inside the shaft. Camille laughed, shaking her head. “Yeah, I’m stuck again. Darn it…” Camille walked forward. “I’ll pull you out.” She grabbed Kit’s ankles. “One, two, three.” She counted off before pulling, getting the girl out of the shaft and catching her in a quasi-hug on the way down. Kit laughed, rubbing her head sheepishly. “Thanks. I can get in, but I can’t seem to get back out.” Camille hugged the girl for real before heading up to the cockpit and steering the ship into the world. She’d forgotten just how picturesque Persephone was, and she smiled, but soon her smile faded. As pretty as this place was, she knew it was Alliance, and she sighed. Before she could reflect on it much further, James called up to her from the hallway. “I’ll meet you in the hold.” She grunted an affirmation as she expertly docked the Valiant at an open slot. Donning a raspberry-colored newsboy cap, she made her way down to the cargo hold to begin the last phase of the job. As she was heading down the stairs, she saw James talking to Kyle, Alyssa and Kit. “You all are to stay confined to the ship. Kyle and Alyssa, because of your, ah, history with the Alliance, we can’t risk either of you being recognized. Kit, you stay behind and play nice with anybody that comes by askin’.” He delegated orders, and everyone nodded. “Camille and I will make the drop, and then we’ll come back to get grocery lists. We shouldn’t be more than an hour.” James tucked a communicator in his ear. “Anything happens, you buzz me. See ya later.” He said and Camille took shotgun in the mule. As they drove away, Kit closed the bay door, sighing heavily. “I got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I dunno why.” She said, wincing. Kyle smiled and shook his head. “I’ll make us some lunch. Food cures everything.” He joked. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It was a little tough to navigate through the crowds of the Eavesdown Docks, but James managed to get through without running anyone down. As they arrived outside of Badger’s building, there were a few burly men standing outside, probably waiting for them. James kept a neutral face as he addressed them. “Afternoon. I’m James Grimm. I’ve got Badger’s shipment here.” He patted the crates behind him. The three men moved forward to start unloading the crates, and when Camille hopped off the mule to help, they shoved her out of the way. She grunted in annoyance. “Hey!” James shot her a look that told her not to start anything, but a hand appeared on the man’s arm. “Now, now, no need to get rough. Little girlie’s just tryin’ to help.” Badger’s thick cockney accent was hard to miss as he approached James. “James Grimm, I presume?” He sounded so haughty, and James resisted the urge to sneer. “I am. This is my pilot and first mate, Camille.” Badger reached to take Camille’s hand. “Pleasure. But I get the feeling I’ve seen you ‘round here before…” He was trying to remember, and Camille fought the urge to roll her eyes. “You have. I flew with Serenity a few years back.” Badger’s eyes betrayed recognition, and just a little fear. “Oh yes, I remember now. Well, shall we?” He waved his arm behind him in a gesture for them to enter. The two hesitated. “Brom and the boys will take care ‘o this.” At his assurance, the two followed him inside, though still a bit warily. They entered his ‘office’ and he motioned for them to sit, but they stayed standing out of habit. “I really do appreciate you taking on this job so last minute. If the gorram Feds hadn’t have snatched me boys, you wouldn’t have had to go to the trouble.” He said, annoyed. James nodded. “It’s what they’re good at.” He said simply. Badger reached into a drawer in front of him, pulling out a fairly hefty coin purse and setting it on the table in front of James. “There’s the sum we agreed on.” James shoved the bag to the side in front of Camille, who opened it and dumped it to count it. Badger frowned. “I’m hurt, Jamesie. You don’t trust me? I assure you it’s all there.” James’ eye twitched at the use of the nickname, and his fist clenched and unclenched. “Merely standard procedure. Surely you can understand that can’t you?” James had a slight edge to his voice. Camille finished counting quickly, and she nodded to James as she put the coin back in the bag. Badger tipped his bowler hat, smirking. “Pleasure doing business with ya.” He said before the two exited. Once they were outside and back on the mule, Camille sighed and flopped into her seat with relief. James had a slight tick to his smirk. “Ta ma duh[2], Cap’n, I thought you were gonna knock his block right off!” Camille laughed. James snarled. “Ben tiansheng de yidui rou.[3] He probably deserved to get that smile wiped right off his face.” As he drove off, he laughed. Once they arrived back at the ship, James saw a man standing in front of the open cargo bay talking to Kit. Immediately suspicious, he revved the engine of the mule and the man turned around. They moved out of the way for the mule to come through. “Here they are. Cap’n, the man says he’s got a job for ya.” James hopped off the mule with Camille and walked over to shake his hand. “James Grimm? Listen, I’m in a real bind here. My ship I was supposed to use for a transport got taken off world by the gorram Feds last night. Luckily the cargo wasn’t on it, but still, I can’t follow through with my order. Can you help me?” The young man looked at him desperately. James scratched his head. “What kinda cargo? And where?” “Machinery parts for water purifiers and the like. I was headed for Newhall.” James’ suspicion was nearly gone now. Newhall’s major business was in water. “We can deal. Just saved me from lookin’ around for a job anyway.” He smiled, going over the finer details with the man while Camille and Kit went back inside. They chatted for a bit before James came back to get on the mule. “Gotta go get the cargo. I’ll be back.” “Want me to come with, Cap’n?” Camille offered. James shook his head. “Nah, sit this one out. Won’t be hard.” he backed the mule out and the man took shotgun. Camille sighed, putting an arm around Kit’s shoulder and going upstairs. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The goods were boxed up nice and easy, making transport and packing them into the hold easy. Once that was done, James had the ship’s fuel tank topped off and they headed off the world, towards Newhall. The man they’d helped out earlier was strolling down the docks before he ducked into a Vanderdecken. He smiled maniacally at the man waiting for him in the main room. “It’s done. They’re headed for Newhall.” The seated man, burly with dark brown eyes and a receding hairline, smiled evilly. “Good. We’d better get going, then. Don’t want my Camille to miss her daddy for too much longer.”[1] You wanna bullet?! You wanna bullet right through your throat?! (Taken from the Serenity movie script; Mal says this right after Simon punches him)
