kuragari: I wish I had a longer update for you but I wanted to get this out. hopefully the next chapter won't be so long in coming. if you've managed to bare with me thank you so much! and enjoy Jack finished off his second beer and made his way to the fridge to grab a third. What the hell had he been thinking? He should not have said what he’d said. He knew better, damn it! What the hell!? What was it about Daniel Jackson that dug under his skin and burrowed there? Ever since he'd met the scientist, Daniel had been a thorn in his side. A thorn, that in truth, Jack found himself grateful for more often then not. He was resourceful and kept Jack balanced in ways the Colonel didn't know he needed to be. Then again, every once in a while he tipped the scale entirely and sent Jack spiraling off the other end into a blinding rage the soldier had seldom felt in his life. It wasn't like the anger he felt toward the G'aould or any other enemy. That was a cold anger, just simple hatred and disgust. That he could focus through and keep his wits about him. What Daniel brought out in him burned hotter and brighter and made it difficult to see straight. It swept him up and pulled him along and left him with the deep urge to either strangle the other man... or kiss him senseless. Since the latter wasn't an option, Jack usually ended up in Daniel's office, yelling himself purple at someone who apparently refused to listen. He wasn't sure he could do it anymore. The moment when Daniel transported up to an alien ship that was about to be destroyed, completely ignoring the other man's cries, that was the moment Jack had finally had it. He had gone to Daniel's office with the full intent of ripping him a new one, but as usual, his shouts went in one ear and out the other. He had grown so angry that he almost lost it and punched him, but something in him broke when Daniel proclaimed that he didn't care about his own life, and he had felt all of that rage dissipate. It had felt like Danny had punched through his chest, leaving a gaping hole for the emotions to drain out of, leaving him exhausted and fed up. It was then that he wasn't able to stop the words, stop the confession that had been building in him for years. He cared about Daniel, he needed him alive, needed him by his side because he had no idea how he'd function without him anymore. It was different to how he felt for Sam and Teal'c. He loved them like family and he couldn't bear the thought of either of them dying, but he knew if they did he could somehow find a way to continue on. He wasn't so sure that if the same happened to Daniel that he could. The first time they'd thought the scientist died had been hard enough, and that had been before any real feelings other than friendship for the other man had solidified in Jack. Now, he couldn't even think about it. And Daniel didn't care. That was the hardest thing about this whole mess. Jack sighed heavily and leaned his head against the cool surface of the refrigerator. He couldn't pin point exactly when it had happened, but he'd fallen in love with the dorky, self-sacrificing, irritating, sexy, infuriating scientist. Part of him had been hoping that someday Daniel would actually notice and maybe, maybe even reciprocate his feelings. But the events of the past day and a half had flushed that hope down the toilet. Danny didn't ever spare a thought for Jack before throwing himself in the line of fire. The Colonel didn't want to admit it, but he would be better off forgetting the whole thing and trying to move on. It sounded like a daunting task, but like he'd said, one of these days their luck would run out and he couldn't let it destroy him when it did. There were too many people depending on him. He took a long drag from the fresh beer and moved to his living room, debating switching on the TV when his doorbell rang. He'd been home for roughly two hours, having gotten off base around 8:30 it was now almost 11:30. Who the hell did he know that would be visiting this late? Jack sighed heavily and ran a hand through his hair, moving to the door. He took another swig, pulled it open, and almost spit in Daniel's face. The scientist didn't wait for him to recover from his surprise, shoving passed him into the house. The Colonel finally managed to swallow his beer and shut the door, slowly turning to look at the now pacing brunette. "Well, gee, Daniel. It's good to see you too," he started sarcastically. "No, please, come right in! Really, I insist!" "We need to talk, Jack," Daniel said, once more acting like the other man hadn't spoken. Jack gave a weary sigh and started for his couch. The scientist seemed geared to continue their argument but he wasn't in the mood. "Do we have to do this now?" he asked, plopping down on the cushions. "'Cause I'm tired of fighting, Danny." "What did you mean? When you said I don't care for you the way you care for me?" Daniel asked and Jack had to admire how he always went straight to the point. It wasn't like Daniel Jackson to beat around the bush. “It doesn't matter. Just forget it,” he said, letting his head fall back against the couch. “No, no. You don't get to say that and then tell me to forget it,” the scientist said, taking a few steps towards him. “Just tell me. What did you mean?” Jack lifted his head, saw Daniel's determination and knew that he was not going to let this go. He looked straight into those blue eyes, challenging the brunette to find his own answer. "What do you think I meant?" "I think I need to hear you say it,” The Colonel leaned forward, surprised at the look on Daniel's face. The desperate hope behind those eyes sparked a small fire in his chest and allowed him to think about possibilities he'd given up on. Maybe...? “Would me saying it change anything?” he asked, uncertain of the answer he wanted. “It would change everything.” Jack swallowed hard, feeling his lips go dry and his brain temporarily stutter. He slowly stood, placing his beer on the coffee table, and moved to stand face to face with the brunette. “All right, Daniel,” he started softly. “It means that it would kill me if anything happened to you.” “Tell me why, Jack,” Daniel's voice had also gone quiet as he reached up and removed his glasses, his eyes never leaving Jack's. “Because...” he started, seeming to fight to get the words out. The other man's hand on his neck grounded him, gave him enough to courage to finally say it. “I'm in love with you.”
