Chase was sitting on the rooftop patio, pouring herself a drink from a bottle of Jack Daniels when the door opened and Simon came through. She sighed and downed half the drink in a gulp as he walked towards her. “Coming to blame me for everything some more?” Simon pulled a chair around backwards and sat facing her, arms resting on the back of the chair. He looked at her a long moment. “He told me you didn't want to go. That you fought with him about it and it was his decision. He also said that I'm the only one you've ever defied him over... but you went, so that wasn't defiance...” he left the sentence hanging in the air. She shook her head. “No, he's talking about something else. He jumps around sometimes like that, I think it all gets a little jumbled in his head, all the stuff that has happened.” Simon looked down to the drink in her hand and then back to her face. “... well?” Chase sighed and downed the rest of her drink. “It's a bit of a story, you might want a drink yourself...” She stood and walked over to the bar “Beer? Or something stronger?” she asked. “What you are having.” Simon replied after a moment. Chase bent and scooped some ice into a glass and walked back, placing it in front of him. She pushed the bottle of Jack towards him, indicating that he should help himself. She ran a hand through her hair awkwardly, sitting back down. “Are you sure you want the story?” Simon nodded, so she started. “Well, do you remember when we first met? Not long after the time I just pulled you out of...” ---- (The Past) Chase, like so many others had been affected by the storm. She'd been riding a horse in the park, doing the tourist thing when the storm hit. She had been struggling to control her horse as the hail and wind picked up. She'd been thrown and was lying in the grass collecting her bearings when it happened. She was left with the ability to tell how people and animals were feeling... and what was more, to calm... or work them up. It had proven to be useful at times. She'd been recruited almost immediately by him. Fred. The man with a vision to change the world. She'd worked with him since. Helping people. Finding people. Making sure things happened... or didn't. Her job right now was to make sure someone lived. A boy at a party. It was a little more complicated than just that, things had to happen, people had to be in place. She'd spent the last few days memorizing the briefing. It said in detail who the “players” were and what their parts were – what needed to happen. Her job was to stay inconspicuous and make sure everything went to plan. Chase walked into the community centre with a yawn carrying a large brown box, just behind a beautiful girl with brown skin, big curly hair, pulled back into a ponytail and big hoop earrings and a pale boy with brown hair and intense blue eyes dressed in dark clothing. Simon and Alisha, she noted. Chase herself had long dirty blonde hair, blue eyes and a pale, slightly freckled face that was on the plain side, pretty enough in her own way. She was wearing blue jeans and a purple tank top. Today was the day where instead of hanging in the background like the plan said, she was going to make sure things happened like they were supposed to... in her own way. All the skulking around and showing up to save people and disappearing into the night, it was shit. She'd been given all this information about what could happen, what should happen and her role to make sure things went right. Despite her boss's insistence that she was not to get involved beyond saving the second boy in the superhero costume... she was going to get involved. She wasn't sure why, but Simon and his intense blue eyes seemed to draw her in. 'What could it hurt? Doing it my way...' she reasoned. She had come up with a carefully timed plan to make sure the events that had to happen were not interfered with. She was only here to stop one murder. After all, she could save the “not Simon” boy in the costume by making sure Simon wasn't there to piss off the overprotective father of Jessica. Chase spotted Jessica right away. She walked right up to her and smiled brightly. “Hi, I'm Chase and I'm here to help with the run... my boss donated some t-shirts, he called you about it, yeah? Where should I put them?” Jessica frowned. “I'm not sure... that won't fit in my locker, I'll have to ask if they can lock them up in the office... I'll ask the probation worker...” she turned and walked quickly after the probation worker, who had just shoved Nathan to the ground. Chase put the box down on the table and turned to see Simon standing behind her. 'Perfect' she thought. She walked towards him and smiled. “Hi! Are you helping with the race?” she asked. He nodded. “Yes. Um. Hi.” He lifted his hand to his mouth and cleared his throat. “Great! Could you do me a huge favour?” she paused. “I'm Chase by the way, and you are?” she said quickly. He was making her a little frazzled, being close to him... he felt so intense. She wasn't sure if he felt more strongly than other people or she felt him more strongly. But, he was the reason she had broke protocol and was getting involved. She wanted to meet him. “S-Simon. And maybe the favour? D-Depends what it is.” he said. His eyes were wide and he looked down slightly when he finished. “Come to my car and help me carry in another box of t-shirts? I don't know that I can lift the big one alone...” she smiled at him. “Oh. Yes. I can do that.” Simon said. “Fantastic!” she started walking him towards the door. Get him out before Jessica had time to meet him... Yes. When the reached the door, Simon opened it for her. A gentleman too... yes, this was a good idea. “So, um Simon. Orange is really your colour...” she teased lightly. He frowned and looked down at the orange jumpsuit. “It's really not.” “Yeah, I was completely lying. But you still look cute, even in an orange jumpsuit.” Chase assured him, but then blushed. He really was unnerving her, she hadn't meant to say that. “Um... what I meant was... Well, I guess I said what I meant, but I'd meant for that whole thing to go differently... I'm rubbish at flirting I guess.” They reached the car and she opened the back door. She pulled the box out slightly, Simon silently taking the other side. “One-two-three, lift.” she counted and then lifted. When she looked up across the heavy box at Simon he had a slight smile on his lips. Together they carried the box into the community centre and dropped it off at the table. Jessica was no where to be seen, probably still talking to the probation worker. “Thanks Simon. I, um... guess I'll see you later. I should go ask what I should be doing now.” she said. Simon walked away. Just then Jessica walked out of the probation worker's office. Having stymied their official meeting, Chase now had to keep them from connecting further – keep Simon well away from her. This part of the plan had been a little fuzzy. Chase decided to just stay by Jessica's side as much as possible and to try to commandeer Simon's attention when she was not with Jessica. Simon had disappeared off somewhere so Chase kept busy preparing for the race. It was nice working with people for a change... hiding in the bushes left something to be desired though the amount of people in the community centre and their feelings was sort of overwhelming. Jessica though bubbly on the outside was full of insecurity and was a bit depressing to be around. From what Chase had read, she was taking away what would prove to be the brighter part of the next few days from her. She felt a little bad. The thing with Simon would only complicate things in the long run, where she would have to deal with her father being a killer and going off to jail. 'I'm saving her some trouble, really...' she rationalized to herself. Her watch beeped. About now was the time Simon ought to have been asking Jessica out. The argument that led to that... did it happen? Did Simon defend Jessica without even having met her? 'Is he even going to say yes to me?' Suddenly, Chase was worried. She was in for a world of trouble for deviating from the plan no matter what. If Simon was completely uninterested in her then the trouble would be for nothing. The plan seemed less clever now. She took a deep breath and tried to calm her thoughts. 'I can make this work.' she decided. Just then she spotted Simon coming towards her looking twitchy and nervous, though that seemed to be pretty normal for him. She could feel the nerves coming off him and it was overwhelming. He was definitely rattled. Chase closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to calm his mind a bit – if nothing else she needed him to calm down before she started freaking out more due to her own worries and feeling his. She took several more deep breaths as she concentrated on being calm and collected, pushing some of that on him. She opened her eyes and jumped slightly, as Simon was directly in front of her, looking at her with wide blue eyes. “Are you alright?” Simon asked. Chase nodded and shook her head, trying to shake off her own nerves and what was left of his. “Oh.. um, yeah. Just, um, a bit of a headache. Nothing an aspirin won't cure.” she fumbled out. Lying wasn't exactly her strong suit. Simon seemed to accept it easily. She could feel his nerves building up again. He really was a bundle of nerves. Chase forced a smile onto her face, despite the pit in her stomach. “Um, so I am pretty new in town, don't know many people. I was wondering if you would like to go for a drink or a coffee or um.. tea or something? With me, that is.” 'Smooth, Chase.' she thought to herself. In her plan all this had been so much easier. But in reality she was finding it harder than she expected. This was probably why Fred sent her on jobs that required being in the background. She was much better at blending than mingling. Simon was looking at her with those wide blue eyes again, startled. “Yes. I would. How about now? I'm done for the day. We could go out. For um, a drink.” he replied. He was feeling oddly relieved. Or was that her feelings? Up close and personal with him things started to feel jumbled. She kept the smile on her face as she sorted through her thoughts. “Great! I just have to tell the organizer I'm going. And you have to change I guess? We can meet out front in 5 minutes or so?” she asked. He nodded at her and walked away, without saying anything more. Chase rubbed her temples. 'Cute, lonely, nerdy boys are going to be my downfall.' she thought. She found herself strangely drawn to Simon, despite finding his feelings to be slightly overwhelming in their intensity. After all the briefing and the spying, she knew quite a bit about him, but in a weird outsider way. Like a secret stalker. Which of course was creepy and strange. But so was having superpowers and working to save people or let them die in order to save the world. She shook her head. Thinking about it more wasn't helping. It would work out, she'd save the boy, get the boy and... she wasn't sure what happened after that. Probably she'd get reassigned to desk work and a big lecture. Or removed. Or killed. Fred had never told her anything about her own future. Maybe she wasn't in this 'Brave New World' he was making. Now she really did have a headache. She said her goodbyes to Jessica, promising to return to help in the morning and went to wait out in front of the community centre.
