Sam was pretty good at letting me take some extra breaks during the day. Sookie’s vampire boyfriend came in. He took a seat in a booth. Sookie was busy at another table so I headed over to him. “Hey Bill. What can I get you?” I asked softly. He looked up at me. His skin was much paler and cold to the touch. “Hello Liz. True Blood, 0+ please,” he said softly to me. “You got it,” I said. As I went to walk away, I felt his fingers close around my wrist. I stopped and watched him. “I am sorry for your loss,” he said watching me. “I heard about your mother.” I smiled at him. “Thank you,” “I want you to know that it wasn’t a vampire that killed her. We are willing to help you find who did this,” Bill replied. I felt a rush of warmth toward him. I gently leaned down and hugged him. He seemed awkward but I released him. “I’ll send Sookie over now,” I said softly to him as I headed over to Sookie. I told her Bill was here. I headed in the back and grabbed a bottle of True Blood. I warmed it up in the microwave for a few minutes. Sam was filling a glass with beer and handing it to Hoyt, another young man who worked with Sookie’s brother on the road crew. Hoyt spied me and smiled at me. “Sorry about your mama,” he said kindly. I smiled back at him. He was a kind, very polite young man. News traveled fast around Bon Temps. Sam looked at me. “If you want to get off work early, that’s fine Liz,” Sam said. I shook my head. “I’m fine Sam really,” I said softly. Sam nodded. I saw Sookie and Bill talking in the booth. Jason Stackhouse entered the bar next. His eyes roamed over the bar and when he found me, he hurried over. He threw his arms around me, hugging me tightly. “Sorry Liz. I heard what happened,” he said releasing me shortly. “Thanks,” I said. “But I wish everyone would stop apologizing to me! It’s not like y’all could do anything about it!” I shouted. All eyes were on me and the bar was silent. Irritated and embarrassed, I angrily threw down my tray and fled out of the bar. I made it out back before I stopped and bent over. I let out a cry of anger and grief. I dropped to my knees and wrapped my arms around myself. I heard the door creak open. Sam slowly approached me, as though he were approaching a feral animal. He came around to the front of me and slowly crouched down. He raised a hand and tucked a few strands of blond hair behind my ear. “Go lie down in my trailer,” Sam said quietly. “Take the rest of the evening off.” I looked at him. His expression was so kind and gentle. On impulse, I grabbed his face and pulled him toward me. I pressed my lips against his and kissed him softly and gently. Sam returned the kiss the same way. Sam pulled me against him. After a few moments, he pulled back. We were both breathless. He pressed his forehead against mine. His breath tickled the bridge of my nose. I closed my eyes, enjoying the feel of his body against mine. The palms of my hands were pressed against his chest. I could feel his heart beating. It was rapid. He swallowed, causing his Adams apple to bob. “Liz, I—I…” his voice trailed off. I looked up into his eyes. He had a pained expression on his face. I watched him expectantly. “I can’t do this,” he said thickly. “Do what?” I asked curiously. “Get too close to you,” he said closing his eyes. “I trusted someone once and she betrayed me.” “Are you talking about Daphne?” I demanded. “Sam she was working with that crazy bitch who caused chaos! I’m nothing like her!” Sam opened his blue eyes. “I know,” he said quietly. “Then what’s the problem?” I cried. “Sam, I love you! Always have since the day I joined! And I just made a fool of myself if you don’t feel the same way back!” Sam looked surprised at my words. “You don’t understand!” “No I do understand! You’re scared to care about someone. I’m not like those women who betrayed you! I would never do that to you!” I yelled at him. Sam stepped closer to me getting in my face. Flashes of David went across my vision of when he backhanded me a few times. I reached out and smacked Sam. Sam seemed startled but he didn’t strike me back. Choking back a sob, I brushed past him. SOOKIE STACKHOUSE I was talking to Bill when I saw Elizabeth rushing through the bar. She yanked off her apron and threw it on the counter. As she passed, I caught her thoughts. Damn Sam! I told him how I feel and he knows damn well I’m not like Daphne! What’s his problem? Liz threw me an apologetic look that was tinged with anguish as she left the bar. Shortly following, Sam entered the bar next. He angrily banged a few glasses on the counter top and began filling them with beer. I gave Bill a kiss before I headed over to Sam. “Sam what’s going on? What did you do?” I asked him. “What I did?” he asked irritably. “Right away it’s my fault?” I glared at him until I brushed his mind and picked up on his thoughts. Fucking Daphne! She had to go and ruin things. Now I can’t even let myself fall in love with Liz! Liz probably hates me now. Way to go Sam. I arched an eyebrow up at him. “Stay out of my head,” Sam snapped pointing a finger at me. “No. Sam, Daphne was a bitch we all agreed on that. But not allowing yourself to fall for Liz is a mistake! She loves you very much!” I argued back. “It’s not that easy Sook!” he retorted. “She broke my trust besides me caring for her!” “That doesn’t mean that Liz will do the same thing! She’s totally different Sam. You’re the first man to come along to treat her right,” Sam’s expression faltered. “What are you talking about?” he demanded. “I mean her ex boyfriend David. He abused her. He hit her,” I said stiffly. “Oh that’s right you didn’t know about him. Yeah Sam. He hit her and backhanded her one night so badly that she crashed through a glass table. I spent hours with her in the hospital.” I sensed Bill behind me. I saw Sam’s expression now. I hadn’t meant to tell him like this but he was being unreasonable. “What was David’s last name?” I heard Bill ask behind me. I turned. “David Milton. Why?” Bill’s expression turned angry. “He is vampire. He hates humans and he uses them as ‘play things’,” Sam angrily punched the wall. LIZ. I felt pretty bad for just walking out on Sam like that. I understood how he would’ve felt. But I wasn’t like her. It was about 9 pm. I headed back to Merlotte’s. It was quiet and closed, but I knew Sam often worked late checking up on his inventory and money he’d pulled in for that day. I stepped into the dark bar. “Sam?” I called. There was no reply. I slowly stepped in further. I heard someone to my left. “Sam?” I called again. “No babe,” An awfully familiar voice said coldly. “Who is this Sam? Do I have to kill him?” David stepped into the moonlight that poured through the windows. He looked the same. His pale skin seemed to be illuminated by the light. His black hair and blue eyes stood out. Even though he was indeed a vampire, he was still amazing. My breath caught in my throat. I was frozen. He was in front of me in a flash and grabbed my throat. He squeezed slightly. I let out a squeak. “So, now you’re fucking a shifter huh? That’s really beneath you Liz,” David said coldly. “Let go of me. We’re through,” I said angrily. “Oh no babe. We’re not,” David rasped as he flung me. I sailed through the air and crashed onto a table, splitting it in half. I landed on the left side of my hip. My body ached. David came over to me. He grabbed my throat again and lifted me up off the ground. My feet dangled a few inches off the floor. He threw me toward the bar. My body crashed into it before sliding over it, knocking beer bottles and glasses off. They hit the floor with a loud crash. Glass shattered everywhere. I was lying on my back now, my whole body screamed in pain. Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth. I was sure my ribs were broken among other things. David grabbed my ankle and yanked me out from behind the bar. I screamed and used my one free leg to kick at David. The heel of my sneaker collided with his nose. He didn’t even flinch. He angrily tugged my ankle to the right so hard, I heard the bone snap. I screamed again in agony. “I’m going to kill you. Get that through your head. You were a fun thing to play with but now I’m bored with you,” David snapped. He picked me up and threw me onto the pool table. Searing pain shot down my spine. I couldn’t move anymore. I laid there with my head turned. My vision got blurry. I saw a blur of something. I heard a dog snarling and a whelp. Then, another blurry object came into focus behind David’s profile. I heard the hiss of a vampire. I saw blackness encroaching in the corner of my eyes as eventually I sank into it. SAM I came too quickly and yanked on the clothes I stored behind the bar. I had shifted into the dog to try and attack David. I had seen him fling Liz onto the pool table like a rag doll. Liz wasn’t moving. Bill had arrived and snapped David’s neck. I rushed over to Liz. She wasn’t moving. A trickle of blood was seeping out of the corner of her mouth. He breathing was shallow and short. Bill came over. “She is badly injured,” he said gently sweeping some of Liz’s blond hair away from her face. “She will die.” “NO!” I shouted at Bill. “You have to help her. Please.” My voice had become thick with emotion. I leaned over Liz and turned her head slightly. Her eyes were closed. My hands cupped her face. I raised my eyes up to Bill’s. “Please. You would do the same for Sookie,” I said quietly. “She means the same to me as Sookie does to you.” I saw Bill’s expression falter. He nodded. “She has to drink my blood,” “Liz? Wake up. You need to drink Bill’s blood. It will heal you,” I said urgently. Liz’s eyes fluttered open. I saw Bill’s fangs slide down. He raised his right wrist and sank his fangs into his own flesh. Blood started flowing. He placed his wrist against Liz’s lips. Liz drank. Bill carried Liz to Sookie’s house. He gently placed her down on the couch. When Sookie heard of what happened, she burst into tears. She hugged Bill, thanking him for saving her best friend. Bill looked pleased but modest. I had a bleeding gash on my temple which Sookie cleaned up. A bandage was placed on it but other than that I was unscathed. “He was just flinging Liz around like a doll?” Sookie asked Bill. Her voice was pained. Bill nodded. “Had Bill not done what he’d done, Liz would be dead,” I said quietly. Sookie hugged Bill again. “Why then it’s so lucky that Bill and you were there,” Sookie said. “What were you doing there anyway Bill?” “I had asked Bill to come over to talk about David. I wanted to know what he looked like incase he came into the bar,” I said to Sookie. Sookie came over to me and kissed me on the cheek. “Well you both are heroes then,” She said softly. “I’ll go make some tea.” She left the living room. I was standing by the couch, gently stroking Liz’s hair, sweeping some of her blond locks away from her face. Bill studied me. “You are in love with her,” he said. His tone wasn’t a question, but a statement. I looked up at Bill. “Who? Sookie? No we’re just best friends,” I said shaking my head. “No. I mean Liz,” Bill added. “Yeah, but I think I screwed things up with her,” I sighed. Bill kept his eyes on me. “You cannot let one bad experience taint your feelings,” he said slowly. At that moment, Liz let out a soft moan and opened her eyes. LIZ I slowly opened my eyes and realized I was lying on a couch in Sookie’s home. Strangely, my body didn’t ache anymore. I felt someone gently stroking my hair. I looked up and saw Sam. He had a large bandage over his temple. “Sam?” I asked groggily. He nodded and smiled. “Ssh just rest,” He said softly. I spied Bill and then Sookie came in. When she saw me she burst into tears and hugged me tightly. “Oh Liz,” she sobbed. “Thank God you’re alive.” “Meh?” I asked confused. When Sookie released me and flopped into the loveseat. Bill sat down beside her. Sam moved into my main line of vision and stood by the couch. “David threw you around like a rag doll. He broke your ankle, and when you landed on the pool table, your back was broken. I had changed and sank my teeth into his neck, but he flung me off and kicked me in the ribs. I couldn’t save you.” Sam said thickly. “You had massive internal bleeding. You would’ve died.” His tone faltered on the last two words. “Bill saved you. You drank his blood. You’re healed.” My eyes moved from Bill to Sam. Bill nodded. “I am glad to see that you are alright now,” Bill said softly. “Sam pleaded with me to save you.” I moved my eyes back onto Sam now. Sam nodded and swallowed. His Adams apple bobbed. The top button of his plaid shirt was unbuttoned exposing a white tee shirt underneath. He was dressed in jeans as well. I slowly sat up. My body felt as though nothing had happened. I felt great. “You might feel things toward me though. It is a side effect of drinking vampire blood,” Bill replied. “OK. Let’s leave the two of them alone for a bit,” Sookie said softly as she took Bill’s hand and pulled him upstairs. Sam gave Sookie a look but she smirked and shrugged. When they disappeared upstairs, Sam approached me. He sat down beside me on the couch. “I couldn’t let you die,” Sam said quietly as he slowly took my hand in his. He intertwined his fingers with mine. My heart ached. “I love you Liz. Very much. I almost lost you today and I would’ve never been able to tell….” His voice trailed off as I cut him off by wrapping my arms around his neck and resting my chin on his shoulder. His arms wound around me pulling me against him. “I’m sorry about David,” he said quietly in my ear. “I would never ever treat you like that.” His voice took on an assertive and firm tone on the last words. I smiled and pressed my face into the hollow of his shoulder. “I know,” I said quietly. I pulled back and kissed him. He kissed me back softly and gently. But there was a sense of urgency there now. He pulled back breathless. He cupped the side of my face, letting my hair trickle through his fingers. “I wanted so badly to save you,” he whispered. “I couldn’t. I never wanted something so badly.” I shook my head. “Forget it. There is something that I want badly though,” His blue eyes pierced mine. “What?” “You,” I said softly. He broke into a smile and kissed me again. He gently eased me onto my back on the couch. He was hovering above me. His fingers carefully unbuttoned my nightgown. My heart was hammering in my chest. He kissed me again softly, letting his kisses trail down the side of my throat. I let out a low sigh. He pulled the two halves of my nightgown apart, exposing my breasts. I deftly unbuckled the belt around his waist and unzipped his jeans. Sam kicked off his jeans and pulled off his boxer shorts. I unbuttoned his plaid shirt and yanked the tee shirt off over his head. I grinned up at him. Sam looked down at me. I saw nothing but love and adoration in his expression. I reached up and placed a hand on the side of his face. He nuzzled my palm. He leaned down and kissed me again. At the same time, he pressed his hips against mine entering me. I let out a low gasp. Sam stopped and looked at me. “Are you alright?” he asked immediately. I nodded. “Yes please don’t stop,” Sam began thrusting slowly. Every movement he did was gentle and yet urgent, as though he was scared of losing me. I wrapped my legs around his waist. He pressed his face into the grove of my shoulder with each thrust. My arms were wrapped around his neck, pulling him down against me. His tempo quickened a few moments later. I could feel the pleasure building up and knew that my climax was coming soon. Sam was also close to his. A few moments later, Sam’s climax hit and he released it. My body responded hard with its own climax. Sam collapsed on top of me breathing hard. “That was incredible,” I said softly as my body began relaxing now. Sam nodded. I grinned and sat up. Sam got off me. I gathered up his clothes and placed them in his arms. I took his hand and pulled him upstairs to my bedroom. We made love again. When we were done, we fell asleep. I snuggled up against Sam with my head on his bare chest and dozed off.
