Chapter 2
The next few weeks were every dream Jack had ever had or ever wanted. They spent their time hopping from world to world. The Doctor could show Jack cultures and flavors and experiences that even Jack had not known in his long life. He always knew that the Doctor got off on the awe of his lowly human companions and living vicariously through them was part of his thing. So Jack didn't hold back in his oohs and awes.
They had romantic dinners in exotic worlds. They lingered in cafe's on pink ocean sides. Jack suspected on one planet they may have started a war. There were romantic times, and exciting times and sometimes too much danger. They made love so much. And every time that mental bond became stronger. He could now communicate with the Doctor telepathically and though they conversed verbally almost constantly, the real communication was now more direct. Jack was learning to control it so that every errant thought he conceived didnt go directly into the Doctor's head.
Jack had never been so happy in any of his lives as he was in those few weeks when the Doctor gave him everything he'd ever wanted and then more.
But then something changed.
It was sublte at first. They were making love, Jack on his belly, back arched. He straigned his head back over his shoulder, kissing the Doctor who rode him. Jack's hips tilted up and back, trying to make the all important contact with mouth and bum simultaneously. Suddenly he actually felt the Doctor realize something, a sensation of shock, and then...there was a distance that hadn't been there since the first night of their reunion. A wall rose, something the Doctor suddenly wanted hiden from Jack.
It started to get worse from there on. Jack would catch the Doctor staring at him with that somber look on his face and Jack would get this sinking feeling. If he probed the Doctor's mind in those moments he'd be met with the mental equivalent of a fake smile. Jack kept thinking the Honeymoon was already over and he didn't know what to make of it. Except it made him suspicious of the Doctor's motives.
They were in the Tardis control room when the Doctor was frowning intently at a computer screen. He had his glasses on and he was staring at it with his lips pulled into a tight grimmace. He looked at Jack with an intensity that made Jack's skin crawl before a happy grin spread across his face. Jack asked if everything was all right.
"Course it is!" he said exuberantly, but his mind was closed to Jack.
Jack had gotten accustomed to the intimacy and easy communication of their mental link so this door being closed to him perplexed him. The Doctor was good at hiding what he truly felt most of the time but it was harder to hide from his mate. And Jack was perceptive. He knew when someone was behaving off character. He knew it invariably meant bad things.
"Yeah," he drawled. He felt a little pekid. He had felt that way on and off since the Doctor's attitude had shifted. He wanted to pick the Doctor's brain, find out what was going on inside that furry little brain. Instead he asked, "Where are we going today?"
The Doctor brightened a little more realistically, "There is a race of beings on the outer edge of this Galaxy who have advanced far beyond their years. They have only been a civilization for a few hundred years but they have made first contact and now they have a resort on a space station that entertains aliens from that quadrant. I havnt been there before. It sounds amazing- you game for a visit?"
Jack smiled, setting aside his trepidations in hope of more romance and sex in yet another far away location. "Of course I am!" he said.
The place was amazing. The planet was not unlike Earth and it spun in blue, green and red glory. It had oceans that were a unique shade of crimson. The sunrise over the end of the planet was incredible and the space station was situated to view it continuously. They stood on the observation deck together to take it all in before retreating to the room the Doctor had rented. Jack took his hand...
and felt that slight retreat from the Doctor. It was just like how it had been before. Like he was trying to set Jack back at arm's distance again. Jack frowned and gripped the Doctor's hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing it. He glanced at the Doctor to see that sad expression vanish behind a fake smile. Jack kept thinking somethings up.
"It's as beautiful as you thought."
"Yes," the Doctor said, "Spectacular!"
The Doctor retrieved a card from his pocket and handed it to Jack. "It's a credit card. It has enough money in it to keep us comfortable here for months. Have fun with it."
Jack looked at the card stupidly. "Okay," he said. The Doctor was good at stealing the local currencies but he didn't usually give it to Jack so formally. That something fishy feeling reared.
"Are you going somewhere?"
"Ha- what? No... yeah...I might skip about a bit and find out what here is edible for humans. Im not entirely sure which of this lot of aliens are not actually aliens here. I don't think I recognize any of the species here!"
There was a huge number of varying bipeds- and some who were not bipeds, enjoying the observation deck views along side them. The majority of the people who were dressed as staff, however, were almost exclusively from a race of tantacled beings. Jack figured they were probably the natives. "Let's go back to our room first," Jack said.
The Doctor sighed and then smiled. "Okay."
They made love again and for the first time in a week Jack felt like his Doctor's heart was all the way in it. It had a desperate intensity akin to what had been there that first night. During the afterglow, Jack kept having this feeling like it was a goodbye. It was so intense at one moment Jack almost asked the Doctor about it.
I love you.
Ill always love you Jack. No matter what don't doubt that.
Jack laid in the bed, semen drying on his thighs. He felt contented and he smiled distantly. The Doctor had gotten dressed. "Ill be right back," he said. "I want to get some of those goodies I saw on the promenade.""Bring me back that stuff that tastes like chocolate but isnt chocolate?" Captain Jack said. In that moment, his suspicions were lost beneath a pile of spent sexual energy and the resulting afterglow.
Goodbye, Captain Jack.
The Doctor paused in the doorway and looked back at him. "Sure," he said but Jack caught a glimpse of that sad look as the door swung shut behind him. It caused Jack's eyebrow to raise but he really didn't understand until he heard the faint sound of the Tardis leaving. Then it all clicked.
The damn thing was close enough to hear but far enough to be beyond hope of Jack reaching it before it was gone. The Doctor had just slipped right out of Jack's fingers as suddenly and as fast as he'd come.
"NO NO NO NO!" Jack hollered uselessly, jumping from the bed before the sedond whir. He dragged his pants on and ran barefoot to the dock where the Tardis had been resting. Of course it was long gone. "NOOOOOO!" Jack screamed, startling several nearby...people?
He ran back to the room and located his cell phone. Desperately he dialed the number and panted into it, white knuckled, hoping the Doctor would answer. There was a click on the line.
"I'm sorry Jack," the Doctor said dispondently. "You will understand one day. This whole thing...its been lovely but...it's all wrong."
"Wrong?!" Jack shrieked, "I thought we were past all that horse shit Doc!"
He could almost see the Doctor shake his head, the pitiful expression on his face. "Im sorry Jack. I left you enough money there to stay for as long as you need."
"Doctor! Don't leave me here! If you need to shake me off at least bring me back to Earth. Dont leave me on some wierd alien place I can't get home from! You ASSHOLE! Why?! What have you been hiding from me? Doctor! Please don't do this to me again! Doc? DOC!"
Jack heard the break in his own voice. Hearing the resigned, sympathetic tone in the Doctor's voice infuriated Jack more. "I'm so sorry. It has to be this way Jack. You can't go back to Earth Jack. Not right now. I'm sorry..."
Jack panicked when he heard the click of the phone hanging up. He shook his head as if the Doctor could see him. He glared at the phone as if it was the phone's fault.
"FUCK!" he cried in frustration. Jack threw the phone across the room and it smashed into pieces. He stared at it, realizing he'd just cut off his only method for getting a hold of the Doctor and screamed "FUCK!" again an octave higher. He ran to it and picked the pieces up, grimacing as it was damaged beyond his ability to repair it.
I won't cry...I won't cry...
Tears welled up. "Damn you Doctor!"
