“Ai yi yi yi yi! Princess Vada? Are you sure, Rangers?” Alpha Five was acting like he was about to have a panic attack.
“That’s what the guy said, but they never said what their names were. They only called each other brother and sister,” Tommy answered.
All of the Rangers had powered down when they teleported back to the Power Chamber. Zordon, Billy and Alpha were currently trying to look through their data base to find out who Princess Vada and the mysterious dragon-people were.
“Describe them to us again, please,” Zordon commanded.
As his fellow team mates gave their descriptions, Jason got lost in his thoughts. It felt like those silver eyes of the female were stamped on his brain; those eyes, and that laugh. That beautiful laugh was echoing in his head. He wished Emily’s laugh sounded like that. He abruptly shook his head, trying to dispel the thought. Where did that come from? 'Emily’s laugh was great. . . Wasn’t it?' He frowned to himself.
“Jase?” Jason nearly jumped as he looked to Tommy. His best friend was looking concerned. “Are you ok, man?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Why?” He answered quickly.
Tommy blinked at him, still looking concerned. “You just looked a little lost there for a minute.”
“Nah, bro, I’m fine.”
“If you say so.” Tommy let it go, to Jason’s relief.
“Hey, guys, I think I found who our mystery people were. You did say Amphyteres, right Zordon?” Billy brought everyone’s attention back to him. Apparently his friends had continued talking without Jason even being aware of it.
“That’s right, Billy,” Zordon answered.
As Billy pulled up the information he found, Zordon started relaying what he already knew about the strangers. “From what you’ve told us, it sounds like the new comers are a race called Amphyteres. They are a race of dragon shifters.”
“What do you mean ‘dragon shifters’?” Kat asked.
“They are a race of beings that can shift forms on their own. They have two forms: the demi form that you observed, and a dragon form. The dragon form looks very much like the European style dragons that you hear about in human folklore. There are three breeds of Amphyteres: fire, water, and ice. Each Amphytere can breathe one of those, and prefer to live in climates similar to their element,” Zordon explained.
“So what kind of dragon shifter are these?” Rocky asked.
“I don’t know, Rocky. Amphyteres were not capable of space travel before I came to earth. They were such a barbaric race that most of galaxy avoided them after they watched them for a time. Billy may have more information in the computer since we’ve been trading information with Aquitar.”
Billy took that as his turn to begin, “There is some more information, but it’s not very recent. Amphyteres are a mean species. They are quick to fight and are highly aggressive. They are very powerful: they’ve discovered how to use their own life energy as energy weapons to go along with their elemental abilities. When they first started travelling through space they apparently only ventured off of their planet for the sake of hiring themselves out to fight wars for the highest bidder and gathering slaves. I’m still not seeing anything about ‘Vada’, but this information I have is a few decades old. I’ve sent a message to Aquitar, hopefully they’ll have something more recent to give us.”
“Ai yi yi!” Alpha started waving his hands around again. “This isn’t good at all!”
“Calm down, Alpha! Don’t panic, yet,” Adam tried to soothe Alpha.
“He’s right, Alpha,” Rocky chimed in. “We’ve been doing alright against Mondo; I’m sure these guys won’t be too hard to handle.”
“I am glad you are optimistic, Rocky, but don’t get over confident. We don’t know the full extent of what these three can do or how many enemies they brought with them. Until we can find out more information we should all be on guard for anything,” Zordon cautioned.
Billy looked to everyone. “There’s nothing more we can do here until we get more information from Aquitar. You guys should head on back. We’ll alert you when we get the information or something happens.”
“Alright, Billy. Thanks man,” Tommy slapped his shoulder. “We’ll be ready when you call.”
Jason teleported out, along with the others, but instead of going inside the youth center with them he decided to go for a walk. He told them all he’d meet up with them later, and had to assure them all that he was fine before they finally let him be. He loved his friends, but for some reason he felt he needed some air and time alone. . . Though even he had to admit that it was strange for him to feel that way.
He headed for the lake. It should be pretty quiet at his favorite spot this time of day. It would be a good place to do some katas and clear his head. Once he made it to his spot, he took a deep breath and looked around. Quiet, nice breeze, sunshine with few clouds…no random attacks from monsters…it was a refreshingly peaceful trip. Jason smiled to himself as he started stretching; this kind of perfection didn’t last long, so he needed to enjoy it while he could. He started up a gentle kata to warm up. After his warm up he started one that was a bit more difficult and required more focus. About half way through his second kata he felt eyes on him. This wasn’t an uncommon occurrence, Jason was actually used to people watching him whenever he was practicing his martial arts, but something seemed a little off to him. He tried to ignore it and continue practicing, but the sense that something wasn’t quite right kept nagging at him. He forced himself to complete the motions before turning to see what was setting his instincts off so bad. It didn’t take him long to see what triggered the feelings and couldn’t stop himself from taking a step back in shock.
It was HER.
The female…what was it…Amphytere? She was sitting on a lower branch of the tree he was under, watching him with those eerie silver eyes. Her head was cocked to the side in a surprisingly adorable expression of curiosity. And even more strangely, she seemed perfectly content sitting there studying him.
“Wh-what are you doing up there!?” Jason actually snapped at her. He readied himself for her to attack, but she didn’t move. She just cocked her head to the other side and blinked at him like she thought he was dense.
“Watching you,” she stated simply, like it should have been obvious.
“Why?”
That one she pondered for a moment before answering.“You intrigued me. You’re technique is quite good and you’re a rather fine specimen of a male…for a human.”
Jason blinked at her. “Huh?”
She furrowed her brows in confusion. “I don’t know what ‘huh’ means. Are you confused?”
“Ah…yes. ‘Huh’ usually means ‘what’.” Was he actually explaining this to a creature who probably just wanted to kill him? “It’s another way to…express confusion.”
“Oh.” Now she was blinking at him as she thought on that. She huffed a little as if having to dumb it down for him annoyed her. When she huffed, a small puff of what appeared to be mist came from her nostrils; well that explained what element she could control. “Your well performed katas caught my attention and I find that I enjoy looking at you.” She was a rather blunt creature, it appeared.
Jason actually blushed. “Ah…thanks?”
She raised a brow, 'how could something that alien look so cute?' “Is that a question?”
“No. Um…no. Sorry. Thank you.”
She smiled. Jason found himself floored, figuratively. The way that smile lit up her face and her eyes…even Emily’s beautiful smile didn’t compare to this…dragon. ‘Oh no,’ he thought to himself. How could he feel like that about someone who wasn’t even human for Pete’s sake? He tried to feel appalled, but as he found himself watching her bow her head gracefully and tell him he was welcome, he couldn’t. He couldn’t even slightly feel bad for finding himself attracted to this female.
She hopped down from the tree and approached him. She moved slowly, cautiously as if she expected him to attack her. Which he probably should, but he was just as curious about her as she seemed to be about him. She slowly circled him. Jason stayed still as she looked him over, but it was hard while she was at his back. She stopped and stood in front of him when she was done.
“I find you surprisingly handsome, human,” she stated simply.
“I find you surprisingly beautiful, amphytere,” he answered before he could stop himself. He flinched when he realized what he did.
A slight rising of one brow was the only sign of surprise she gave. “So you figured out what we were. You’re the ranger in the black and gold outfit, yes?”
He paused before he answered, “I am.”
She smiled again, sending him reeling again…figuratively, of course. “I thought so.”
He gave her a look of confusion. “Your movements gave you away. Your technique. We watched you for a time before we got involved in your fight earlier. We wanted to see what you and the machines could do.”
“Did you get enough information?” He couldn’t stop himself from asking.
“On the machines? Yes. On you? Not so much.”
“Is that why you’re here, now?”
“No. I just wanted a swim. You distracted me.”
“Oh,” Jason really didn’t know what to say to that. He looked at her, his eyes starting to wander over her.
“Would you like to look?” she asked.
He blinked, “What?”
She smiled again. “Would you like to look at me, like I looked at you? It’s only fair. Go ahead.”
‘It’s only fair’ she said. The creature that’s planning on taking over the world actually wants to be fair? ‘What is going on here?’ Jason thought to himself as he took her up on her offer. He circled her the way she circled him. She actually opened her wings for him. He reached out and touched the skin on her wings. It was thinner than he expected, but still felt strong. As he continued around her she carefully moved her tail out of his way.
“The fin on the end of your tail, is it sharp?” he asked.
“It is.”
“You’re whole body really is a weapon, isn’t it?” Jason wanted to smack his forehead. ‘Why did I ask that?’
“It can be, but so can yours. Your martial arts can make you almost as deadly as me, depending on how you use it.” She didn’t shy away at his questions. He found himself liking how matter-of-fact she was.
“That’s true,” he agreed with a nod.
“What is your name?” she asked, tilting her head to the side again.
“Jason,” he couldn’t stop himself from answering her. “What’s yours?”
“Achelle.”
“Achelle,” Jason found himself repeating stupidly. “It’s beautiful.”
She smiled again; she really needed to stop doing that. “Thank you, Jason.”
“You’re welcome,” the reply was automatic. There was a pause as neither of them said anything. “Achelle…why aren’t you attacking me?”
She tilted her head again, looking a touch confused. “Mother didn’t tell me to attack you.”
Jason blinked. “You only attack when your mother tells you to?”
“Unless they threaten me directly, or it’s a spar, yes.”
“Why are you being…nice to me right now?”
She looked at the ground as she thought about that one. When she looked back up at him, her silver eyes showed her confusion. “I don’t really know.”
“Why not?” He had to press her. He had to know what made her tick; that might be a key to keeping them from taking over the planet.
“Because no one has ever caught my interest the way you have before,” she stated so simply, and he was promptly floored again. Could it be she was feeling the same way about him that he was about her?
Achelle was still gazing up at him, studying him as he struggled to process what she said. “Jason?” A delicious shiver went through him at the way she said his name. “Are you alright?”
“Yes. . . Ah. . . Yes, Achelle. I’m…surprisingly fine,” he looked down at her, his brown eyes meeting her silver ones.
She was smiling at him. “I like the way you say my name.”
His whole body leaned towards her, like he was the metal and she was the magnet. Her smile went from sweet to something else, something that made his body throb pleasantly.
‘Seductive,’ his subconscious supplied the adjective he was a little afraid to name.
“You do?” he was shocked at how quick his voice had deepened. Jason didn’t remember his voice having ever sounded like that before.
Her new smile turned into a smirk. He had no trouble at all labeling that one as seductive. She started leaning towards him the way he was leaning towards her. “Mm hmm. I do,” Achelle said softly. She moved closer to him, their bodies almost touching. Jason told himself to move away, but he couldn’t. He was frozen, lost in her silver gaze and the feelings she invoked in him.
“Say it again,” she whispered.
Jason took in a sharp breath, smelling her scent for the first time. It was amazing; she smelled like fresh ocean waves. Not the sea-weedy, dead fish smell, but of sweet sea water and fresh air. He found himself leaning down, getting closer to her. He took another breath, this time to speak, but before he could ruin himself by saying her name again his communicator gave those blessed six beeps of his salvation. He was literally rocked out of the spell they’d both unintentionally cast on each other as they both jerked away.
“What the hell was that!?” Achelle growled, upset that she was startled.
“My communicator.” He blinked at her, surprised at the foul language. Even as evil as their former enemies were they had never spoken like that. He looked down at the instrument that was normally a source of irritation, but was his saving grace this time. “I have to go.”
“May I see you again?” At his shocked look she quickly clarified, “Outside of a fight. I know we’ll meet again in battle…but I want to talk to you again.”
Jason decided that he will probably never stop being shocked by this female. “Um…” ‘bad idea, Jase, bad idea.’ “Yeah. Sure.” His subconscious was now screaming that he was an idiot. It screamed even louder as he melted at her delighted smile. His communicator beeped at him again.
“Can I meet you here? At sundown?” She asked. Her eyes were wide as she seemed like she was nearly begging. She looked so darn cute; she could probably get him to agree to nearly anything with that look…provided it was morally ok.
His subconscious poked at him, asking if talking to her at all was morally ok. He ignored it.
“Sundown it is,” he answered.
She smiled at him brightly, this time big enough to show off her sharp teeth. Jason didn’t even care. They were startling, but she was so pretty when she looked that happy he couldn’t find it in him to be disturbed or afraid. He was so screwed. He backed away from her, lifting up his wrist so he could reach the button that would teleport him to the Power Chamber. No sense hiding when she already knew what he was. He did look around to make sure there wasn’t anyone else around though. Achelle waved at him. He called out a goodbye and then teleported.
Oh yeah.
He was so, so screwed.
