"I'm just trying to see if you're okay you jerk."
"If the medical staff didn't find anything wrong then you certainly wont, so stop hovering for christ sake." His snappy tone had her snatching her hands away from him and she watched with a frown as he turned away from her to pull his t-shirt back on. 0ver the past few weeks Sky's attitude had gotten colder and colder towards the people around him and she knew she wasn't the only one to notice. New recruits had taken to avoiding him at all costs and his own teammates didn't initiate contact unless they had to. At this point Sydney was the only person brave enough to deal with him head on and on a daily basis. She'd hoped by now that he'd open up but all her pestering had done was shut her out even more.
"Schuyler, what's wrong?"
He'd frozen in the act of putting on his jacket and she knew her worry had been voiced outloud instead of the privacy of her mind. Mutely he finished pulling himself together but his movements were jerky and if anything he now seemed angry. Finally her turned to face her and she hated the cold detachment that had settled over his features, wished she understood why it was there and how she could fix it.
"Don't call me that." And then he was moving again and she was left to scramble after him. He'd made it halfway down the hall before she'd caught up to him and snagged him by his wrist to tug him to a halt. He'd gone rigid at her touch but she didn't release her hold as she stepped in front of him and let her free hand settle on his chest.
"Please talk to me, I want to help." Silence stretched between them and she started to think he wouldn't respond to her at all, resigned to it her grip on his wrist had started to loosen when the words whispered out of him between clenched teeth.
"You can't."
"I don't understand.."
"When do you ever understand anything besides sales tax?" She should have expected the insult, it was after all his default defense mechanism when upset, but even though it was petty and shouldn't have mattered it stung. Sky was supposed to be a friend, he was someone she'd stood beside and put her life on the line for repeatedly. He was supposed to be someone who knew she wasn't just an idiot blonde and that was exactly why it hurt. Because he hadn't sounded sarcastic or teasing, he'd meant those words and by the look on his face he'd definitely meant to hurt her.
"You don't get to talk to me like that, like i'm stupid."
"But you are."
"Shut up." the hand that had been resting on his chest had pulled back to smack at him in emphasis before she stepped back to put distance between them and fought hard to keep the pain from her face. "In case you haven't noticed yet Sky, I'm the only person who deals with you anymore unless they have to."
"Am I supposed to be thankful for that? Gracious that you hover around me oozing pity? Because I'm not." He'd stepped forward closing the small distance between them quickly and still moving forcing her to retreat more until her back hit the wall and she had little choice but to look up at him. "What you haven't seemed to notice yet Sydney is that I don't want you anywhere near me."
"Sky.."
"I don't want some ignorant ditz poking her nose in what I do or pestering me with questions. I don't want you hovering around like I'm so fragile I'll break at any second. I don't need or want your help let alone your friendship and truthfully the only thing I do want from you Syd, is for you to fuck off." He'd boxed her in, his arms on either side of her head, and lowered his own so that they were eye to eye. She could feel the anger radiating from him but she still didn't understand any of it. She'd nodded numbly and found herself staring at their feet only to jerk in surprise when she felt one of his fingers brush aside a tear that had slipped free. Lifting her gaze to his face again she watched as the mask he wore these days slipped, saw what looked like regret in his eyes.
"Syd...I-"
"Are you alright Sydney?"
She watched as Sky's entire demeanor changed, watched the fury and hate flash across his face and then he had shoved away from her before storming off down the hall without acknowledging Jack's appearance.
"Syd?" She slowly turned her attention away from Sky's retreating back to Jack who'd stepped beside her and moved into the hug he offered, burying her face in his chest as her arms wrapped around his waist.
"It's fine."
"I don't think I believe that."
"You're a good boyfriend so you wouldn't, but for now just pretend you do."
