The morning had been hazy. Kymber drifted through the later hours like a dead fish being sloshed around in the tides after a storm.
She hadn't remembered waking up, or getting ready, or the walk to school. But she inhaled the chilly air while she sat in the school courtyard, and was finally able to wonder how she made it so far into her day.
Kymber took steady, even breaths, and let her gaze wander around the courtyard. She had the first, and earliest lunch block of the day.
All the conversation and laughing from the scattered groups of students who were eating together become nothing but white noise.
Huge puffs of condensed breath surrounded her. For a moment she felt a little safe and hidden behind the veil.
Kymber looked at the gloomy overcast above. There was absolutely no sun slipping through, but she still felt like it was too bright. Her pupils ached as they struggled to contract.
"Hey, Kym!" a familiar voice called to her.
She was startled, but she saw her friend making his way towards her.
Josh Meeks had lived on the same street as Kymber since she could remember. He was her best friend.
Josh was tall, but not gangly or skinny. His face was on the fence between teen-boyish, and the beginning of a more defined jaw.
Kymber kept her eyes on him as he approached, weaving through the round picnic tables, with a textbook under his arm.
Josh had the warmest brown eyes, beneath a swoosh of thick, dark hair covered his forehead.
Kymber found herself admiring all of his features, as if she didn't see him nearly every day.
Then, before she knew it, he was right in front of her.
"Kym", Josh said, as he slid off his pack and sat down in front of her.
"Where were you this morning? When you didn't come out, I asked your mom, and she said you'd left while it was still dark."
Josh waited a second for Kymber to say something, but she only stared at him.
Though Kymber was completely absorbed in his presence at the moment, Josh's voice sounded distant to her.
She finally realized he had asked her a question.
"Uh…," was all she could think of to say.
"Was the chem test really that bad?" Josh asked, letting out a small chuckle.
Chem test? Kymber wondered. But it didn't matter.
He pulled his backpack up onto the seat, stowed his text book and yanked out a pair of headphones.
"You know, if you told me you wanted to go in for tutoring super early this morning, I could've gone with you," Josh said. " I wouldn't have minded."
"Yeah…," Kymber said. Trying to form a sentence felt like trying to pull her brain out of quicksand.
Why was this so difficult?
Josh turned to her, only now taking notice of the redness that contrasted her chartreuse irises, and the intense darkness of her eye sockets.
"Kym?" Josh said, leaning in and doing a small waving motion with his hand.
Kymber's mind churned, and out of nowhere, her stomach dropped. The fog was now replaced with panic.
Her eyes welled up, and what had happened the night before flooded into her memories.
Or was it only a nightmare that she recalled?
"Kymber, tell me what's wrong?," Josh said, his voice growing more concerned. "Talk to me."
The pieces of her morning made their way back to her as well. She remembered getting out of bed, even though she felt like she had been hit by a train...she remembered walking to school in the dark…
…she remembered…putting on a scarf to cover the bruising the demon had left…
Kymber's hand flew up to her neck.
Josh jumped. "Kymber? What is it?," he said, sliding around the table to sit next to her.
The scarf was there, wound around her neck.
Kymber looked at Josh with her mouth slightly agape. She took in a deep breath.
"You're never going to believe me, Josh…," she said.
"Try me," Josh said. He braced an elbow on the table.
"No, like…it's really crazy, and you're going to think I'm stupid."
Josh couldn't help a light laugh from escaping him.
"I've known you forever, there's nothing you can do at this point to make me think you're crazy.", he said.
"Josh-," Kymber started to say.
"Or stupid," he interrupted.
The bell sounded for then end of lunch.
Kymber pursed her lips, and bit them anxiously.
"I'll stay out here with you until you tell me what's bothering you," Josh said. "The teachers can just suck it. We'll both get late passes."
Kymber hesitated. She was still unsure how she was going to explain what happened the night before.
"No, Josh," she said. She stood up and slung her pack on. "Just come home with me after school and I'll tell you."
Josh was obviously disappointed, and still confused, and Kymber could see a growing concern behind his eyes. He did his best to hide it though. Kymber knew he only ever did it for her sake, so she wouldn't feel bad for making him worry.
"Okay," he said in as normal of a voice as he could. He stood and put his pack on as well. "As long as you promise you're okay."
"I promise," Kymber said, unsure of whether she really meant it.
Without another word, they both walked down the breezeway, and entered the school through the side door.
