Liam was lying on his back on the floor with John lying on his chest face to face with him. Natalie sat beside them while Liam sang a Celtic lullaby to John who cooed a little while he listened. “He likes it,” Natalie smiled when Liam finished. “You’ll have to tell me the name of that song so I can try to find a way to play it for him while you’re not here. It always calms him when he’s fussy.”
“Suantraithe with Noirin Ni Riain,” Liam answered. “I’ll have to write that down if I can remember how to spell it. My brother sang it to me and his kids, our mother sang it to him, and so on and so forth since like a really long time ago.” A little smile appeared on Liam’s lips. “When I was really little and got scared I would go into his room and climb into his bed and he would pull me close and sing it to me. Always made me feel safe and I would fall right back asleep.”
John smiled back at him and Liam chuckled. “It’s probably more of a monkey see monkey do thing right now, but still so cute,” Liam kissed John’s cheek.
“When are you going to realize my nephew is an advanced genius,” Dean smirked from the couch.
Sam came in and sat on the couch. “Just got off the phone with Bobby. He’s got a job for us. Rufus and a friend of our dad’s, Ellen, need some help in River Pass, Colorado. I guess demons have taken over.”
“Yeah, Bobby say why he’s avoiding me?” Dean asked.
“Dean, he’s really torn up about getting possessed and stabbing you. It shook him up pretty bad.”
Dean shrugged. “Not the first time demons have tried to kill me, and won’t be the last, but whatever. If we are needed, let’s go.”
They got in the car and started driving. When they were nearly there they came to a bridge that had a huge section taken out. They got out and looked. “This is the only road in or out,” Dean said as he kicked a rock over the edge.
Sam pulled out his phone and held it up. “No signal either.”
Dean sighed. “Rufus was right. Demons got this place locked down. Looks like we're hiking in.”
“I don’t know,” Liam shook his head. “Demons can do a lot of crazy and terrifying shit, but that?”
Dean turned to him. “You think it’s something bigger?”
“My inner freak says yes.”
They took what they could carry out of the trunk and walked into town. The place was deserted. Cars were overturned and busted up and blood was everywhere. Dean whistled at a shiny red Mustang. Liam cocked his head to the side. “What?” Dean asked. “Didn’t know you were into cars.”
“I’m not, I just… This one is untouched by whatever the hell went on here.”
“Damn, beauty and brains,” Dean chuckled. “I got myself the whole package, don’t I?”
They heard the sound of a gun cocking and turned around guns trained on an older red headed woman. “You the Winchester boys?” she asked.
“Yeah,” Dean nodded. “You Ellen?”
“Yeah,” she lowered her gun and they did the same. “You two do look a little bit like your dad. Sorry to hear of his passing,” she said before suddenly throwing holy water on Dean.
Dean blinked and wiped his face. “Thanks. The blond is Liam, my boyfriend, and lucky for us, a giant can of heavenly whoop-ass.”
She motioned for them to follow her. They entered a church, a devil’s trap in the doorway and a line of salt across the door. “What's going on, Ellen?” Dean asked while they followed her into the church basement.
“More than I can handle alone,” she answered.
“How many demons are there?” Sam asked.
“Pretty much the whole town, minus the dead people and these guys in here.” She stopped at a closed door. “So, this is it, right? End times?”
“Seems like it,” Sam nodded.
She knocked on the door. “It’s me,” she called out. A peep hole was opened, then the door was opened and they were let in. Thirteen people were gathered in the little room. “This is Sam, Dean, and Liam. They're hunters. Here to help,” Ellen told them.
Liam only took a few steps in when he gasped and grabbed at his stomach. “Babe, what’s wrong?” Dean looked concerned.
“Major disturbance in the force very nearby.”
Sam pulled Ellen aside when she looked at Liam funny. “Really hard to explain, and even harder to believe unless you’ve seen it yourself,” he spoke in a low voice. “But inside that body is heaven’s pit bull. While he’s awake and himself he’s pretty oblivious to what he is, but he does know and feel things. We call it his never failing gut. If things get bad enough you might even get to see what’s inside come out to play. The red eyes, they’re a little freaky until you get used to them. But if he says something big is close, then something big is close.”
“Alright, catch us up,” Dean said to Ellen when Sam finished briefing her.
“I doubt I know much more than you. Rufus called. Said he was in town investigating omens. All of a sudden the whole town was possessed. Me and my daughter Jo were nearby. We got here, and the place, well, the place was like you see it. Couldn't find Rufus, then me and Jo got separated. I was out looking when I found you.”
“These people cannot just sit here,” Sam looked around the room. “We got to get them out now.”
“No,” Ellen shook her head. “It's not that easy. I've been trying. We already made a run for it once. There used to be twenty of us. You don't know what it's like out there. Demons are everywhere. We won't be able to cover everybody. I'll be back,” Ellen headed for the door again.
“Where you going?” Dean asked.
“I can't sit here on my ass. My daughter's out there somewhere. I'm not back in half an hour, go. Get these people out of here.”
“At least take Liam with you.”
“Fine,” she sighed and motioned to the blond. “Come on.”
Liam grabbed his gun and followed her out. “So where'd you see her last?” Liam asked, looking around.
“Up ahead.”
“You know what’s really weird?”
“What?”
“Now that I’m out of that church basement I can breathe a little easier. I don’t think this is as cut and dried as it seems.”
Ellen chuckled. “Yeah, Sam told me about your gut and that we should listen to it. What do you think is going on here?”
“As usual, tip of my tongue, but it won’t come out. Did Sam tell you I can kill demons by laying a hand on them and I heal people too?”
“He said you were a force of good. We could use more of you out here.”
It was Liam’s turn to chuckle. “Somehow I think when God when made me he not only smashed the mold to bits, but burned the blueprints. I don’t think the world could take another me. Hey, look at that,” he pointed to smoke rising from a chimney not far off.
They approached the house carefully, peeking in a window from around the corner. There was a demon standing just inside. “Guess we found base camp,” Ellen sighed.
Liam’s eyes narrowed. “But demons don’t get cold, so what the hell.”
Before Ellen could respond they were both grabbed from behind. A blonde girl pinned Ellen against the wall. “Give me my mom back, you black eyed bitch!”
Liam slipped free of his attacker to whack the blonde with the butt of his gun. “Ellen, run!” he shouted.
Ellen took off leaving Liam facing three attackers. He fought like hell, but was eventually tackled. An older black man stood over him. “Got you now, you bastard.” Liam was whacked in the head and it was light’s out.
Liam came to tied to a chair with the black man and the blonde girl watching him. Liam squirmed, pulling at the bonds. “No way you're getting out of those. Did you up myself. You're stuck right where I want you, you evil son of a bitch,” the black man grinned.
The blonde had a jug of water in her hand and she splashed Liam with it, looking confused when it didn’t burn him. The black man grabbed him by the hair and forced his neck back. “Wait a damn minute,” Liam protested before salt was forced into his mouth. Then the black man stared the exorcism incantation. “You think I’m possessed, don’t you?”
“We don’t think, we know,” the black man growled.
Liam’s eyes flashed red and he closed them and took a deep breath. “Okay, pull back and regroup,” he mumbled to himself. The blonde splashed him with water again. “Obviously that is not doing anything but getting me wet, so will you please listen to reason? You’re Rufus and Jo, aren’t you?” Rufus backhanded Astiratu hard, causing his lip to bleed a little. “Okay, let’s try something here.” Astiratu closed his eyes and a weak bright light flashed.
“Where’d the demon go?” Rufus blinked.
“Um, there never was one,” Astiratu looked at him. “Now that I have some idea what’s going on here, untie me so I can go sniff the bitch out.”
Rufus shook his head. “I don’t like this,” he said as they left him there.
A man in glasses peeked around the corner with a grin. “Was wondering when you were going to show yourself,” Astiratu snorted.
War chuckled. “So, you’ve figured it out. It was always rumored that heaven’s attack dog was a smart one, but you’re a little bound up at the moment I see.”
Astiratu smirked. “Not with your brothers, so I can’t say you’re all that bright. Untie me and let’s play.”
“What would I do that for?”
“You’ve got a point. Hmm, what happened to last seven war horsemen? Oh, yeah, duh, I killed them. Together with your brothers you could kick my ass six ways to Sunday, learned that the hard way, but you’re all alone and you’re a scared little bitch aren’t you?” Astiratu closed his eyes and a brilliant flash of strong white light radiated out him. “All of your hard work gone just like that. Wanna play now?”
War snorted. “It wasn’t hard work and I can just do it all over again you know.”
“And we can keep going back and forth until we both pass out, or we can actually do battle like we’re supposed to, but you’re a gutless pantywaist.” Astiratu sighed as War disappeared.
Sam, Dean, and Ellen showed up a while later. “Mom?” Jo looked at her mother surprised. “How’d you get rid of the demon?”
“There was no demon,” Dean explained.
“The blond guy said the same thing,” Rufus looked at him suspiciously.
“And he was right, as usual,” Sam nodded. “It’s one of the horseman, War we think.”
“You mean the Four Horseman?” Rufus looked a little shocked.
“Yes,” Dean insisted. “Now, where is Liam, or Astiratu, or whichever one he is at the moment? We saw a bright flash of light and everyone regained their senses, and I have a feeling I know who did that.”
“He’s in here,” Rufus led the way to the room they were keeping him in and there was an empty chair in the middle of the room. “Where’d he go?”
“He’s right here,” Astiratu emerged from the closet. “Everyone sane again?”
“Thanks to you,” Sam nodded, and swallowed hard when he saw the blood on Astiratu’s lip. “But I don’t think War will let that stand for long.”
“No, probably not,” Astiratu agreed. “It’s the guy in the glasses. He was here to poke at me. I knew something was off in that basement.”
“Rodger?” Ellen raised an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”
“Lady, that’s just the image of Rodger now.” A gunshot suddenly rang out and Astiratu sighed deeply, closing his eyes and letting out another pulse of light. The firing stopped. “Okay, people, since the Energizer Bunny I am not, let’s go hunt the War bitch!”
They found him going to get into the red Mustang. “I don’t think so,” Astiratu said as the car moved several feet away.
War turned around and glared. “You really wanna do this?”
“Yeah, I do,” Astiratu nodded and a gold sword with runes etched in the blade appeared in his hand. “So, hurry up and wet your pants so we can get started.”
A silver sword appeared in War’s hand he advanced on Astiratu and took a swing. The two fought viciously, both getting in a few good hits. Then Astiratu landed one particularly hard hit and sent War flying into a brick wall. “That really all you got, bitch?” Astiratu laughed and spit a little blood onto the pavement. “What, I kill so many they had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for you?”
War growled and got back up to attack again. They slammed each other around a little while longer. “Okay, I’m just bored now,” Astiratu said as he plunged his sword into War’s chest and the blade came out the other side. A flash of red light burst out of War’s eyes before he fell dead.
The gold sword disappeared and Dean approached. “So, that’s it? War is dead?”
“Yep, ding dong, War is dead. He’ll be replaced eventually, they always are, but for now...”
Astiratu closed his eyes and his body collapsed and groaned. “Babe?” Dean knelt by him. “You okay?”
“No,” Liam answered. “Was I possessed again? Last thing I remember is being tied to a chair while holy water and salt was thrown at me. Now I hurt and I am really tired.”
Dean helped him to his feet. “We’re gonna have to walk back to the car, but then you can lie down and take a nice nap, okay?”
“Okay,” Liam nodded.
Sam turned to Ellen and held out a hand. “Good to meet you.”
She shook it. “You too. Thanks for coming and bringing the pit bull. Don’t be strangers.”
They got Liam to the car and into the back seat where he passed out. Sam and Dean sat a nearby picnic table. “Dean,” Sam sighed. “I’m not whole yet.”
“I know,” Dean nodded. “We were told it would probably take a while.”
“Yeah, but what you don’t know is what went through my mind when I saw Astiratu bleed. I wanted it, Dean. It was all I could think about. I know that part of me is supposed to be out, but...”
“But what?” Dean stared at him.
“I think I really miss the feeling. I tell myself it’s for the right reasons, but deep down I think that’s all just a pretty lie I tell myself. When I was crushing the life out of Lilith like she was nothing, that felt really good. And that was only a taste of what normal is for Astiratu. I can’t imagine, but I want it.”
“He was built to handle it, Sammy, you weren’t.”
“I know, and these thoughts, the fact that they’re still there after all I was put through… It scares me. And my soul, it still feels raw and sore. I feel like I wasn’t at the top of my game this time. That’s why I think I need to sit out for a while. I need to concentrate on my family and becoming whole again.”
Dean nodded. “If that’s what you think is best. Can I trust you around Liam during downtime, or are we gonna have to start living out of motels again?”
“I think I’ll be okay during downtime, at least I hope so. I need all the support I can get right now, and that includes my brother.”
“You got it,” Dean nodded. “I don’t know about you, but I’m starved. What do you say we get some grub, then head home?”
“Yeah,” Sam nodded. “Sounds good.”
