Chapter 2: The Unsub and the Victims
They arrived in a small town in the middle of the forest, where everybody knew each other. There really was no secretes here, or so they thought. The police here did not want to believe that they have a serial killer on their hands.
When the members of the BAU arrived, they were relieved, but then bewildered. Why were there only two people here? The police chief looked at the two, then the area surrounding them, but there was just those two.
JJ stepped in front of Reid and held out her hand. “I’m Jennifer, and this is Dr. Spencer Reid, we’re with the FBI.”
The chief shook her hand politely. “I was kind of expecting more people.”
“They went to the crime scenes to get a feel for the unsub.”
“Unsub?”
“Unknown Subject.” Reid said, figiting where he stood.
He always felt uncomfortable around strangers. He never was very good at social gatherings. His past continued to haunt him, especially his younger school years when he got tied to a pole. Ever since then, he felt awkward around a large group of people.
The officer paused, giving Reid the glance over before looking back at JJ. “You’re welcome to use the conference room, you’ll have the most space there. I’ll have an officer bring you in a whiteboard.”
“Thank you.” JJ gave Reid a comforting smile.
It was so like JJ to want to make sure that Reid knew that no matter what, it will be all right. She always had been the mother of the group. When Tobias had kidnapped Reid, she knew what to say to make him feel better. It didn’t make it all go away like it never happened, but with Jennifer, he didn’t feel like he was going to fall apart. Aaron had always been the father of the group; just do not call him that.
The two followed the officer to the conference room where many of the files were already laid out across the table, covering it from end to end. The two FBI agents stood there in surprise.
JJ looked to Reid. “I hope you’re ready to do some reading, Spence.”
Reid just blinked a few times. Reading would not be the problem, it would be what the contents of all that paper had. Just how bad has it already gotten before the FBI got called in?
Reid had only paused for a moment before sitting down and taking the first file into his hand. His eyes scanned back and forth as his long slender index finger moved across the paper and then down to the next line. It didn’t take him long before he was on the next page, and then the next. If anybody can find anything in all these papers it would be Reid.
He had no idea how much time had passed, but when he looked up from the stack he was reading, JJ was setting down a cup of coffee for him.
“Thank you.”
JJ smiled. “Anything?”
“This unsub is very methodical. Everything he does, down to the last detail is planned. Nothing with him is accidental.”
“Are you sure it’s a him?”
“At least ninety percent.”
“What else can you tell?”
“Well, the unsub is pretty young, but not younger than twenties, possibly some knowledge in either the medical field or something in the science field. He has a good knowledge of the human body, and how to disconnect the human skin from the muscles. He also knows how to cut the skin to pull off long strips of skin, which leaves the possibility of him being able to take the skin off to be all one piece.”
JJ shuttered. “I really hope we can catch him before he kills again.”
The sound of multiple footsteps caught their attention and they looked toward the door to find the rest of the BAU. Nobody looked happy about this assignment.
“Do you have anything?” Aaron said, ignoring the officer beside him.
Reid told the rest of his coworkers what he had just told JJ. Their frowns deepened.
Aaron looked around to the rest of his team. “That means that there is a good chance that the unsub will kill more people.”
As if he had conjured it up, an officer stepped into the average sized conference room. “Another body has been found.”
“Damn.” Derik muttered. “This guy doesn’t stop does he?”
Reid fixed the glasses on his face. “He’s either deaerating rapidly or he’s building confidence.”
“Come on.” Aaron said. “Let’s get to the crime scene.”
The team made their way to the two dark SUVs, climbed in and followed the chief down a long road. It twist, and turn, showing off the beautiful cliffs and the Ocean below. The side of the mountain in places was so covered with trees that you could hardly see the ground below them. The entire area was so green with plants, and the air was so clean and fresh. It reminded JJ of her hometown.
She hated the small town life.
There was a small rest stop along the long road that went up the side of the mountain, like all the other stops, it had an amazing view. For quite a ways, there was nothing but trees. Miles and miles of green before anyone could get to the next city.
Just like any other rest stop, the parking was limited and with the vehicles from FBI, the police, and so on, it was beginning to become crowded. Already the police had the yellow tape up, blocking any visters from contaminating the crime scene. The two large black SUVs holding the FBI agents pulled up, barely having any space to park without blocking the street.
They all exited the same time, getting to the caution tape; they flashed their IDs and were waved in. All they could do was hope that they can put a stop to this as soon as possible.
Just like their other victims, she was tortured, bound and skinned, with none of her skin in sight. Her wrists and ankles were tied to trees, as if she had been sacrificed. Not one bit of skin had been left behind, leaving behind someone with muscles and organs showing. There was no puddles of blood meaning that she had been killed and skinned somewhere else.
“He’s leaving them here to be found.” Reid said. “He’s taunting us. She’s out in the open for anyone to stumble across.”
“Great.” Aaron said. “We need to catch this guy before it escalates. He’s just taking victims now.”
“Being at the wrong place at the wrong time.” Derik said, standing over the body.
What was left of the young woman was hard to look at and Reid was the first to look away. Even after all these years of working for the BAU, seeing the victims after the killer got finished with them always bothered him, some still haunted his dreams.
“Are you alright, Spence?” JJ always seemed to be watching over him.
“Yeah. I’m fine.”
But he wasn’t fine. The nightmares had returned again, and sleep didn’t come easy anymore. It was becoming more and more noticeable as the days passed. Bags under his eyes, he yawned a lot and even became irritable. He had even snapped at JJ a few times. He quickly apologized of course, but the others had noticed.
“We should get some rest.” Aaron said, glancing over to Reid. “We’ll start fresh in the morning.”
The others nodded and after a very long day, they went to their hotel room where they were planning to get some rest. Yet not everybody was going to get some rest.
Reid would spend his night sitting up in bed, drinking cheap hotel booze as he struggled to face his nightmares, the faces of victims that they were too late to save. Why did they haunt him so? Why keep him up late into the night?
There was no answer he could come up with tonight, just like all those other long sleepless nights; and he would go on with his day drinking cup after cup of coffee.

*Ok so hopefully this chapter was a little better than the last? Between working the night shift and sleeping during the day, I’m making some progress by bringing my laptop to work. I do get some funny looks but hopefully I will make each chapter longer and better than the last. Go easy this is my first “Adult fanfiction” ;) ;) ;)
I'm already working on chapter 3
