After a few hours the Impala pulled up to a cozy looking house. “Well, nice neighborhood,” Dean said as he got out of the car.
“Yeah. I pretty much grew up here,” Jenna got out of the car with baby Amara. “Learned to ride my bike down the road. Had my first kiss at that blue house over there. Lost my virginity up there.”
“I'll bet blue house was pissed.”
“She was.” Jenna handed Amara over to Dean. “Do you mind?”
“Hey beautiful,” Dean cooed at the baby.
“That's why I asked you to bring us here. After everything that happened, it just feels safe.”
“Well, good. Safe is good.”
“You're so great with her.”
“Well, what can I say? Babies dig me. Well, look, I should, uh... You're gonna be okay, both of you.”
“I know. What about you guys and Sam? Are you gonna be okay?”
Dean let out a soft chuckle. “Well, for us, the bar's pretty low. See ya.”
“Dean, thank you.”
Jenna's grandmother came out onto the porch so Dean got back into the car and left. He turned to Liam beside him. “You up for a little talking now?”
“You're kidding?” Liam's eyes narrowed. “You wanna do this now while Sam is...”
“I told you, Sam is several hours away. There's nothing we can do until we get there, other than trust him to handle it. Look, I know you're one raw nerve right now, but we've got a long drive ahead just the two of us. I don't want it to be in silence.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“What's going on in that head of yours would be a start. You lied to me by omission because you wanted the mark gone. I assume you wanted it gone so things could go back to the way they were. You got what you wanted.”
Liam sighed and turned his head to look out the passenger window. “I was hoping for something a little less... I didn't want the darkness released. It's just one crisis after another.”
“Yeah, that seems to be the way our lives go. But at least we have each other. Even with the mark, right up until things started getting bad, I loved you. I'm myself again and I still want you.”
Liam turned back to look at his husband. “I'm glad the mark is gone and you're you again. But all that grief over all that time, it can't be erased overnight. I have nightmares about you attacking me.”
“And I'm sick about it happening. You know that, or you should, because I said the same thing after I was a demon.”
“I do know that.”
“It took an ancient curse to get me to hurt you after the first time.”
“To hurt me physically anyway. You do a very good job of delivering emotional blows.”
Dean frowned. “I don't mean to. You knew from the beginning I wasn't very good at relationships. You're the first person that things lasted more than a weekend with. I try, I really do.”
“I know you do. Don't worry, I'm not leaving you. I'm way too much of a masochist for that.”
“Thanks...”
Liam slapped Dean's shoulder. “And of course I still love you. I wouldn't have put myself through all of that if I didn't. Why don't we just focus on getting back to Sam for now. We'll deal with any situation there, and then we'll go home. And since I doubt we'll solve the mystery of the darkness quickly, I think we can afford one night of watching movies together in bed. Spend some quality time together.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Shortly after it had gotten dark Dean's phone rang. “Ghostbusters,” he answered. “Jenna, hey. Uh, whoa. Slow down. What's wrong?” After he hung up with her he quickly turned the car around.
“What's going on?” Liam asked.
“Nothing good,” Dean said as he pushed down on the accelerator.
Dean also called Sam, both to check up on him, and to tell him what Jenna said was happening. “I mean, it sounds like something out of 'The Exorcist'.” Sam commented when Dean told him. “So you thinking demon?”
“Or kid got infected by something. You know, who knows what was in that giant, crazy fart.”
“Wow. Vivid. Thanks.”
“Look, man, I know you're flying solo.”
“No, I'm fine, Dean. Look, don't worry about me. Just help Jenna. And if you need anything, then call me.”
Just a few short hours later they arrived back at the house and went to the door. Dean knocked and Jenna answered. “Hey. Where's the kid?” Dean asked.
“We got another problem,” Jenna flicked her gaze inside the house.
“Figures.”
“I tried to stop her, but my grandma's real Catholic, and after the crazy, she called her priest, who sent over an exorcist.”
“Really?”
They walked inside and were shocked to find Crowley sitting on the couch in priest's clothes drinking tea. “Oh, this just got real interesting,” Liam mumbled.
“Do you know each other?” Jenna asked confused.
“Oh yes,” Crowley answered before they could. “They were scrumptious altar boys.”
“Can we talk to you outside, Father?” Dean asked.
“Of course. After I finish my tea.”
When Crowley was ready the three of them went out into the front yard where they could have some privacy. “Really? Father Crowley?” Dean couldn't believe it.
“I'm sorry, aging, pathetic, has-been rock star. Did I offend your delicate sensibilities? Where have you been? Your brother and that idiot angel, do you know what they've been doing?”
“I just recently found out. What are you doing here?”
“Same as you two, I'm working the case.”
“You usually are the case,” Liam commented. “So answer the original question, why are you here?”
“I have sources in the Catholic church, nuns that owe me a favor, priests with a taste for...”
“Okay, alright, yeah, I can imagine,” Dean stopped him.
“You really can't. Anyhow, they hear of a demonic possession, they call me. If it's one of mine, I tell them to ignore it. If it's a, uh, demon gone rogue, well, that's when Father Crowley comes out to play.”
“So you think there's a demon in there.”
“Not even a little bit. Whatever's in that house, I can taste the power radiating from it. That thing... It's old, deep, dark.” They heard a scream come from inside and Dean and Liam ran in. Crowley followed and caught up to them standing in the kitchen over Jenna's grandmother's dead body. She had been stabbed. “Well, hello, plot twist.”
“Jenna!” Dean called out.
“Really?” Crowley raised an eyebrow at that.
“What?”
“We have no idea what ancient, world shattering evil we're dealing with, but go right ahead. Let him know we're coming!”
“Listen, Velma, this isn't the Scooby gang, okay? So either shut up or get out.”
“Easy, tiger. Just trying to help.”
They heard Amara crying and Dean headed upstairs. “Never thought I'd say this, but I'm kinda with Crowley on this one,” Liam said as he followed. “We have no idea what's going on.”
“Well, then, we'll figure it out.” The men entered the nursery and Dean leaned over Amara. She quieted down, and that was when he noticed there was something on her collar bone. He moved the fabric aside to find the Mark of Cain, and he froze.
Crowley appeared in the doorway. “The child likes you. No surprise, really. You're very maternal.”
“We gotta find Jenna,” Dean snapped out of his surprise and started looking for her. They found her in her grandmother's bedroom breaking angel figurines. “Jenna? What are you doing?”
“My grandma collected these things, but I always thought they were so... Blah. Don't worry. She won't care. I cut her throat.”
“Why did you do that?”
“Because this woman doesn't have a soul,” Crowley answered the question. “Fascinating.”
“What are you talking about? How is that even possible?” Dean didn't understand.
“Amara's hungry. She's a growing girl,” Jenna answered while still smashing the figurines.
“Jenna. Listen to me. Whatever's happened, whatever's going on, we can fix it, okay?” Dean tried to assure her.
“But I don't want to be fixed. I like the new me. She's a ball.”
“Just come with us, okay? Jenna! Stop!” Dean cried as she lunged at him with the knife. Liam grabbed her from the side and snapped her neck. “What did you do that for?” Dean demanded when her lifeless body fell to the floor.
“Self defense! If she really didn't have a soul there wasn't much that could be done for her anyway.”
“Where are you going?” Dean asked when Crowley turned to leave.
“To see the child that eats souls,” Crowley answered.
“You don't get what that thing is.”
“Enlighten me. Come on, darling. Don't play coy.”
“I think Amara is the Darkness.”
“Interesting. So, what now? You kill her?”
“I don't have a choice,” Dean seemed pained.
“Please. Even if you could murder a baby, you couldn't murder that baby. I saw the way you looked at her. Me, on the other hand, it's not like it'd be my first.”
“Stay away from her!”
“Oh, Dean. Adorable little Dean. I want that child, and I get what I want. You and Sam don't understand. I'm not your bloody sidekick! We've had some good times. So I'm gonna give you one chance, just one, to walk out that door, or I'm gonna take you apart atom by atom. Do you understand?”
Crowley left to go find her, but she was gone. The demon cursed and left. Dean and Liam had little choice but to erase any evidence of their presence before they went back for Sam. They were happy to find Sam in one piece, and he even told them about how he figured out that burning holy oil was the cure to what was wrong with the people. He had saved as many as he could.
They decided to drive back to the bunker, talking everything over during the drive. It was nearly morning when they walked in, the place still a mess from the Styne invasion. “Alright, I still don't understand. I mean, I thought the darkness was a woman, not a child,” Sam was trying to wrap his mind around it still.
Dean shrugged. “Well, same here. I don't know. Maybe whatever I saw wasn't real. Maybe it was a vision.”
“Vision? Huh. Pretty weird.”
“Yeah, weird with a weird cherry on a weird top. We got to get maid,” Dean said as he looked around.
“Put it on the to do list for tomorrow,” Liam said. “It has been a very long day, and I want to spend time with you.”
“Really?” Dean was a little surprised.
“You already forget the deal we made in the car?”
“You said it was gonna take you a little time. And I know you got some sleep in the car, but aren't you still tired?”
“I am, but we can sleep together, can't we? And don't go where I know your mind is going. I'm not ready for that, but we can actually sleep.” The blond took a step forward and leaned up to kiss Dean tenderly. “I am glad to have you back.”
“Glad to be back. Just tell me what you want and I'll do it.”
“I uh, I need to catch a few winks myself,” Sam headed up to his room.
“I feel bad that Sam's been kept away from his family for so long,” Liam said as he took Dean's hand and started leading him to the bedroom.
“You feel bad? I'm the reason we had to stay here. He got to visit here and there, but I know it wasn't enough. We should go and actually stay for a while.”
“We should,” Liam agreed. “Let's hope nothing else falls on our heads right away.”
