Setting: between the end of 5x8 and first half of 5x9
I suppose that Bronte’s ankle took some days/weeks to improve, so this happens in that gap of time (when they were sooo happy together *sighs*)
Plus, there’s a little change, at the beginning of 5x9, this time Joe didn’t frame Harrison.Prompt : Pet sitting
Summary:
Summary:Maddie needs someone to look after her lovely new puppy dog. Who is she gonna choose?
Bibi and Boo-Boo
Bronte’s POV
“Isn’t she gorgeous?” Maddie yelps, holding a beautiful puppy in her arms.
She weighs probably not even three pounds, she’s all fluffy, with three different shades of brown melting into each other, eyes almost bigger that his little, cute head and such a furry forehead I’m sooo tempted to gather it into a pretty little ponytail, with a little pink ribbon.
That’s her level of cute, awww.
“What is that thing supposed to be?” I hear you ask, your tone so piqued.
Okay, it sounds like we have very divergent opinions about that issue.
“Oh c’mon, Boo-Boo, what kind of question is this? It’s a puppy dog, of course!” Maddie explains what is obvious. “She’s an Imperial Shih Tzu, she’s quite precious!”
“German Shepherd, Husky, Australian Shepherd, Labrador, Old English Sheepdog, Golden Retriever, every kind of Shepherd is a dog, but NOT that way too furry shrew mouse!”
“Ugh! Bibi and I won't stay here hearing your insults!” Maddie strikes back.
And for once I’m sticking up for her; geez Joe, how could you call that quintessence of cuteness ‘way too furry shrew mouse’?!
“Actually I can’t stay, but Bibi will remain.” She rectifies.
“Bibi?” I repeat, amused.
“Remain?!” You repeat, disappointed.
“Of course, I’m going to leave Bibi here as I have important matters to attend to!” Maddie replies.
Oh-oh, I can see the storm approaching.
“Did you mistake me for a fucking shrew-mouse-sitter?”
“Bibi is NOT a shrew mouse!” Maddie snaps, before glancing at me and the way I’m looking at that super cute puppy. “And I think at least Austen here would be very glad to take care of her.”
Who the hell did you dare to call ‘Austen’, you… Miss-Bleached-Brain?
“It’s Bronte, but yeah, you’re right about the rest!” I eagerly offer.
“Yeah, okay, whatever. The most important thing is that we have a deal then.” Maddie approaches me, putting the furry cutie in my arms. “I’ll be back in about three hours; just the time to buy all the stuff and set up her personal room. Harrison and especially Gretchen will be so happy when they come home and find Bibi there. And finally I don’t have to act like Reagan anymore!”
Maddie pauses, looking as someone who said one word too many and I also notice the way you’re glaring at her.
Uhmm…
But who cares, when you have the sweetest dog in the world licking your face? Awww.
“Well, it’s a twin thing, don’t ask questions.” Maddie adds with nonchalance.
“I wouldn’t anyway.” I shrug. “See ya in three hours, then. Your puppy is in very good hands!”
“I know, thank you Bronte.” She replies as she reaches the door.
Well, at least this time she picked my name right.
“See ya later, dear. Bye Bibi, bye Boo Boo!”
I’m so busy playing with Bibi that I couldn’t tell exactly how long you have been glaring at me.
“Look, Bronte, I don’t pay you to play with dogs.”
Your tone is bitter, but at least you finally admitted she’s a dog.
That’s what I call progress.
Not to mention that I perfectly know how to strike back.
“You’re right.” I place the puppy on the floor and I walk towards you, sensually. “But last time I checked, you don’t pay me either to have sex in the cage.”
Of course, I just whispered the last part in your ear, otherwise the customer around here would become a little suspicious.
You’re looking at me as the King on the checkerboard who knows he just received the end of checkmate.
“Oh. Sorry, I didn’t mean what I said. And after all, there’s no customer searching for you and I don’t see why you shouldn’t enjoy some time with a puppy you seem to love so much…”
“I think so, too.” I triumphantly approve, before gulping down. “If only I could find her.”
Bibi is not anymore where she was supposed to be.
Lesson learned, Bronte. Never leave a baby on their own. Baby humans or animals; it doesn’t make any difference.
“What do you mean? You just lost it?” You frown.
“First, ‘it’ is a ‘her’. And second, lost is such a big word, she’ll just be here wandering around…”
“Then let’s go find her, before she destroys half of my bookstore!” You snap.
Geez, I curse Mooney’s for being this big.
After half an hour of searching - Thanks god the customers are too engrossed in browsing the books and no one is about to buy them to notice that you and I are sort of .. missing.
Suddenly I feel a clear noise of scurrying and I catch a glimpse of furry brown crossing the corridor.
I run after her, but the little devil is incredibly fast and finds shelter between some books on the lower shelf.
“Joe, I found her!”
You reach me just when I’m busy pulling Bibi out of the shelf, wondering why she seems heavier than before.
Then, with pure terror in my eyes I found out why: Bibi is holding a book in her mouth, or rather gnawing at it.
One of your rare books.
I try to take it off her mouth, before you see it, but it’s too late.
“What the hell is that fucking shrew mouse doing?” You roar behind my back.
“Please Joe, I’m too afraid to find out which book she ruined. Look at it for me.” I plead.
And you please me, taking the book out of her little fangs and examining it.
Then I see you sigh with relief, which makes me double relieved.
“Thank Bibi’s lucky star that it’s just a very commercial banal English translation of ‘Cuore’ and not the original Edmondo De Amicis’ first original Italian version which lies beside it.” You explain. “Otherwise Maddie would get back the stuffed version of this damn devilish shrew mouse!”
Geez, you made your blood-freezing point.
“Excuse me, young man,” an old woman turns to you. “Is this lovely puppy yours?”
After all, whether you like her or not, you’re holding Bibi in your arms and I just have to frame this moment as you’re busy talking.
“Thank god, no!” It's a way too harsh answer from you. “I mean, nope, she belongs to a friend of mine who left her here in custody.”
“Oh, do you mind if I pet her?” The madame asks.
“I guess that her owner wouldn’t mind, so yeah, go ahead.” You agree and Bibi enjoys all the attentions.
As she caresses the dog, she takes a look around.
“Oh, I see that there’s plenty of children’s fiction here. It’ s been a while since I gave a gift to my niece. Would you like to suggest something to me?”
You beam, place the dog back into my arms and give the old lady all your attention.
About fifteen minutes later you walk towards me, a big grin on your face.
“I’ve just sent two rather valuable books to that lovely old lady… and I guess it’s all thanks to you, you pretty little monster!” You pat Bibi’s head and she barks happily in response.
I look first at her, then at you and then at the window shop.
“You know what? This just gave me an idea.”
-----------------------------------------
“I can’t believe how many books we’ve sold today!” You cheer as we’re waiting for Maddie to come here.
“I knew no one could resist seeing Bibi playing in the shop window; people would come in and once they’re here they just have to take a look around. Then you would charm them with your babbling magic and that’s how we get purchases. It’s pure marketing!” I chuckle, kissing you.
Maddie is on perfect time and I feel a little sad to say goodbye to Bibi.
“Mommy is back, my sweetie, and your little sister will be so happy to know you!” Maddie squeaks, lifting Bibi up. “Has she been good?”
“I have to say she behaved quite well and my bookstore is still whole.” You grumble.
“Actually she was the star of Mooney’s! Everyone went crazy for her!” I inform Maddie.
“Oh, I had no doubt about it.”
“Oh, before you go, I wanted to ask if you’re okay if I post some pics of Bibi I took today, tagging you as her owner, of course.”
“Sure, there’s no problem for me at all. And you don't risk ruining my surprise, because Gretchen is still too young to have a mobile and Harrison.. well, he barely knows how to use whatsapp!” She makes me laugh.
“Thank you so much. I guess this will be the very first post for the Mooney's official instagram page I’ve just created.” I grin and I see you nod, just before actually realizing what I’ve just said.
“Wait. What?” You frown, trying to grab my phone, but it’s too late, I’ve just uploaded everything on line.
“Oh, c’mon, Joe, it’s time you learn how to speak some Gen Z language. Think about how many teens will reach Mooney’s this way, maybe learning to prefer a good book to trap music or every sort of influencer!” I try to reason with you.
“You’re right, I hadn't thought about it.” You mumble.
Dear my love, I can speak your language as well.
“Listen to this girl, Boo Boo, she has such great ideas!” Maddie says, before turning to me. “Next time I’ll ask you to do a tik tok interview instead of him!” She winks at me, before leaving.
Happy but exhausted for the intense day, we both lay on a sofa.
“You know what, Bronte? This afternoon made me figure out that it wouldn’t be so bad to have a pet around… “
“Really?” I grin, excited.
“Yeah, why not? Maybe a cat.”
“Uhh, I love cats, as well!”
“Good to know. He or she could become Mooney's mascot. We could name him Hemingway if we chose a male…”
“Or Lady Chatterley if we chose a female.” I suggest, already picturing us in a cattery.
“So, why not both? Anyway, Lady Cat-teerley would be even more perfect!” You make me chuckle, you, genius!
“At this point the male should be named He-meow-ngway!” I suggest, making you chuckle.
“Oh, we’re sooo going to do that!” You grin.”They could be with us as we work and then at our apartment.”
“Waaah. Co-owning two cats. Sounds like a big commitment.” I murmur, putting my head on your lap.
“There’s no big commitment that scares me if it involves you.” You smile so sweetly, holding my hand. “I love you.”
I rise up to hug you and kiss you.
“I love you, too, Joe.”
We spend some other good quality time relaxing on the sofa.
Me, reading a book and you fumbling through your phone.
I got a notification about a new follower of the Mooney’s instagram page: you.
Well, I guess it makes sense.
But you shouldn’t waste your time checking that post.
“Nice caption.” You approve.
Oh-oh.
I close the book.
Please, don’t look at all the pictures.
Please, please, please, don’t notice all the hashtags.
“Nice pictures of Bibi, too… “ You comment.
Please, don’t slide to any single more pic.
“Wait. Did you even put one with me holding Bibi? Without even asking first?”
Here we go.
“Well, it was such a cute picture, and you two are surrounded by books, so.. why not? I thought it would be something nice to show the owner of the bookstore, too…” I explain, as I’m already walking away.
“And you even put the ‘BibiandBooBoo’ hashtag?!” You’re practically roaring and I’m practically running.
“Oh you’re sooo dead.. Austen!” You chase after me.
I bless Mooney’s for being this big.
At least I have many chances to hide from you.
And if you ever find me, as Plan B… there’s always make-up sex!
