CHAPTER 17
            John and Samantha Munch sat at his kitchen table eating breakfast. Although she loved
her own apartment, there were times when she still preferred to be at her uncle’s. She buttered a
piece of toast and handed it to him.
         0;�  “Can I ask you something?”
            He fashioned his hand into a gun and pointed it. “Shoot.”
            “Do you remember that list you asked me to compile a couple of years ago? That
impossibly long one with a current address and/or phone number for all black males in the tri-state
named Dorian or some variation of it?”
            Munch froze with the toast in his hand, mid-bite. “I might recall something about that.”
            “Hmm.” She picked up another piece of toast and began buttering it as well. “And do
you also recall what you asked me to do with it?”
            “I seem to remember a request to cross-reference it with another list.”
            “Ah-huh. A list of black males, ages six through nine, who had a plane or train ticket
leaving the city purchased in their name thirteen years ago. If I remember correctly, the end result
was still quite a long list. Over five hundred entries, wasnt itt it?”
            “Something like that.” John resumed eating his breakfast.
            “Uncle John? What did you do with that list?”
            Munch pretended to think about it. “I don’t remember.”
            “You don’t? Well, if I had to guess? I’d say you used it to try and find Fin’s son.”
            “Really? Interesting.”
            “Uncle John,” Sam started to lose patience with the game. “Why didn’t you say
anything?”
            “Two years ago you had no vested interest in my partner, so it wouldn’t have made a
difference.”
            “What about now? And did you find anything?”
            “Not yet.”
            “Yet?”
            “I’m still going through the list.”
            “You’re still looking?”
            “I make a lot of phone calls. If I get one back, I can usually cross a name off the list.”
            “And if you don’t?”
            Munch shrugged. “I make a visit. I try to bunch them so I can do a couple at a time.”
            Sam sat back and stared at him. “He has no idea, does he?”
            “No. And I want it to stay that way. I’m not really expecting to find anything. It’s just
become a . . . a hobby, of sorts.”
            “A very sweet, if not time-consuming, one. No one’s ever questioned you about being out
when you make these trips?”
            “Sure. They just think I call out sick a lot.”
            Sam saw her uncle through new eyes. “You’re a very devious man, John Munch.”
            “It serves its purpose.”
            “I don’t know if I like this side of you: Plotting behind people’s backs, sneaking around
with strange women . . . ”
            “That should be singular. And Tori’s not strange. She happens to be a very lovely
woman.”
            “I couldn’t exactly tell with you stuck to her out in the hall that night.”
            Munched laughed. “She didn’t seem to mind. In fact, I know she didn’t.”
            Sam made a face. “Eww. Gross.”
            “No more gross than you and my partner making goo-goo eyes at each other all the time.”
            “We do not!”
            “Sure. And tonight’s little social gathering, as you call it, isn’t a euphemism for ‘double
date’.”
            “Whatever you say, Uncle Munch. Just make certain you guys show up this time. If I
hadn’t already seen her with my own eyes, I’d swear Tori was a figment of your imagination.”
            “Ah, yes,” Munch tho bac back fondly, “Christine.”
            Sam raised an eyebrow at him. “I don’t even want to know.”

            The Velvet Blues was less crowded than usual. Although a few larger parties chose to
remain at their tables, most people had gone to the dance floor to take advantage of the extra
space.
            Fin sat at their table watching Sam become more and more agitated. She checked her
watch for the third time in five minutes, then blew out a breath.
            “They’re late. Correction: They’re very late. If they don’t show up, I swear I’m going to
. . . to . . . I don’t know what, but it won’t be pretty.”
            “Sam. Relax. What are you worried about?”
            “That there’s a Bobblehead #5 in the making here!” She answered exasperated. “I mean,
what kind of woman dates a guy for months without meeting any of his friends and family,
anyway? Wouldn’t she want to meet me, the beloved niece?”
            Fin covered up a grin over her last statement. “Maybe she thinks one of you is enough.”
            Sam gave him a playful shove, then checked her watch again. Trying to distract her, Fin
put an arm around her shoulder and pulled her to him, hugging her side.
            “Okay, here’s the deal. If we find out that she’s just messing with his head, I’ll put in a
call to some people I know who can make her disappear.”
            She arched an eyebrow deviously. “I like it. And then,“ she continued along the same
thread, “I’ll go in and make all traces of her disappear.”
            Fin sl bac backed a few inches away from her. “You know you scare me sometimes,
right?” He looked at hed smd smiled a little. “But if it will make you feel better, then I’m in.”
            Sam gave him an exaggeratedly adoring look and batted her eyelashes. “You’d do that for
little ol’ me?”
            He had to laugh at her expression. “I guess you can always use that look to get us out of
any trouble we might get into.”
            She joined him in laughing, then without thinking, leaned in and kissed him. Realizing it,
she pulled away and froze a few inches from him. Her eyes roamed his face as she breathed in the
scent of him. Hesitantly, she moved forward and kissed him again.
            Fin gave up trying to fight. Cupping her face with his hand, he kissed her back. It seemed
to him as natural a thing to do as breathing.

            Some people need three dozen roses

            Fin tightened his arms around her. He lowered his head and brushed his lips against her
ear, enjoying the quiet moan it drew from her.
            ‘Some people want it all
            But I don’t want nothing at all

            Sam splayed her fingers across his back and rubbed it. Exhilarated by finally having the
freedom to do so, she brought a hand around and reached up to caress his face. Fin took it in his
and brought it to his lips.
            ‘Some people want diamond rings
            Some just want everything
            But everything means nothing
            If I ain’t got you’
            Sam watched as Fin kissed each of her fingers. Flooded with a rush of feeling for him, she
sighed and laid her forehead on his chest.
            ‘Some people want it all
            But I don’t want nothing at all
            If it ain’t you, baby
            If I ain’t got you, baby’
            Fin lifted her chin and softly kissed her lips. When she rewarded him with a long, soft kiss
of her own, he pulled her as close to him as possible.
            ‘Some people want diamond rings
            Some just want everything
            But everything means nothing
            If I ain’t got you’
            He hugged her to him and moved them to the music, oblivious to everything around him
except the feel of her in his arms.
            ‘Nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
            If I ain’t got you with me- baby’
            Munch walked into the club with Tori on his arm. He quickly scanned the tables for Fin
and Sam.
            “I don’t see them. They must have gotten tired of waiting and left.”
            “Or,” Tori nudged him and briefly pointed in the direction of the dance floor, “they found
another way to entertain themselves while wai waited.”
            Munch followed the direction of her finger. A slight smile spread across his face as he
watched his usually stoic partner lovingly kiss his niece.
