Three days passed without incident. Dean did stay by Liam’s side for the most part, but kept his promise to take care of himself. He ate three meals a day and got out of the room once in a while. Of course, while he wasn’t there he made sure either Sam or Natalie was. Liam remained stable, his wounds showing no sign of infection when the bandages were changed. He was healing, and for that everyone was grateful.
Doctor Fish came in once a day every day to check on him, and after three days of slow but steady improvement decided he could be moved to a regular room. Liam was moved to the third floor to a bigger room with a second bed. Dean was told that since the other bed was empty he could sleep in it. They weren’t given a time table of when Liam could go home though. He was transferred to Doctor Finnegan, who said he wanted to watch Liam a few more days at least.
Since the one visitor at a time restriction was now lifted, Sam and Natalie came to visit as well. Natalie thought to bring a Monopoly game in for them all to sit and play. It was a welcome thing because there wasn’t much to do in a hospital room besides watch TV and sleep. Liam was of course still whacked out on morphine, so he didn’t play so well. Even though he was losing badly he still had fun. He couldn’t help but look around him and smile. The brothers trading smack talk and insults with smiles on their faces and Natalie rolling her eyes, this was the way things were meant to be. It would’ve been nicer if the setting was in a cozy living room instead of a cold hospital room, but they had John to thank for that.
The game lasted pretty much all day, and when it was over Liam sent them all down to the cafeteria. While it had been an enjoyable day it had taken a lot out of him to stay awake so long and he was tired. He fell asleep in short order, and woke not being able to breathe. John was standing behind him with a cord wrapped tightly around his neck. Liam flailed and tried to punch him off, but John was too smart to stand near enough. Liam’s hands moved to his neck as he tried desperately to get the cord loosened enough to get some air.
Just when everything was starting to go black he saw Dean come in with security. “When will you learn to leave him the fuck alone!” Dean growled.
“Sir, step away from the patient!” one of the security guards shouted.
John ignored them and kept chanting, one hand holding tight to the cord, the other grasping a knife. The security guards tried to stop him, but John fought, stabbing one of them. Liam’s vitals were all over the place, his oxygen levels steadily dropping. All Dean could do was watch and feel helpless as the love of his life flat lined.
Finally a security guard managed to taser John. That got him to let go, and he was very quickly escorted out while a medical team rushed in. Dean was pushed out of the room while they worked. Two very long minutes later Liam was finally alive again and stable.
“Who was that?” a nurse asked Dean.
“My dad,” Dean said truthfully, very tired of the bullshit. “He doesn’t approve of the relationship.”
“Some people...” the nurse shook her head. “Well, Liam should be fine now. He was deprived of oxygen for a little while, but it was less than five minutes, so… Anyway, security will be on the lookout for your dad from now on.” She gave him a smile and went back to work.
Sam and Natalie came back, noticing the commotion that was settling down. “What happened?” Sam asked.
“Same old, same old,” Dean sighed. “Our father tried to kill my boyfriend.”
They went back into the room and Dean sat by the bed holding Liam’s hand until he woke about a half hour later. “I’m alive...” he said surprised.
“You almost weren’t,” Dean frowned. “They had to shock you back.”
“Yeah, I’m feeling that,” Liam said as he gingerly rubbed his chest and pressed the morphine button again. “I guess your dad isn’t giving up so easily.”
“Nope,” Dean sighed and pulled his lover’s hand up to his lips to kiss it. “Honestly I think I might have to shoot him to get the point across. This is my mess and I have to clean it up. Killing you is not the answer. Losing you again, that’ll just make me do something even more crazy.”
“No, it won’t. You told me you knew there were no guarantees in life. Should something happen to me, you will grieve and move on, got it?”
“Got it,” Dean sighed. “But I also told you I’m not good with emotions.”
Two more days passed, and the doctor decided to let Liam go home. A nurse came in to unhook him from everything, and she went over how to care for him with Dean, Sam, and Natalie. She gave them detailed instructions on everything from how to change his bandages to how to bathe him. She also told them about things to watch out for. Then he was to visit the surgeon’s office in another five days to get the stitches removed.
All the paperwork was done and he was free to go. “They took away my morphine, the meanies,” Liam pouted.
“Relax,” Dean said as he helped him put a shirt on. “The doctor gave you a prescription for something else. We’ll go get that first and you’ll be high as a kite again in no time.”
They got Liam into the car and headed to a nearby pharmacy as promised. Dean did his best to avoid potholes and bumps because he knew his lover was in pain and tender. They had to wait a little while for the pills, but when they got them Sam let Liam have a swig of his water to take one. “I don’t feel better yet,” Liam huffed.
Dean chuckled. “Babe, it doesn’t work like that. The stuff in the hospital worked instantly because it was injected straight into your vein. A pill has to be worked through your digestive system and get absorbed into your bloodstream in your small intestine. That takes a little time.”
“There’s a flaw in that system,” Liam crossed his arms.
“Once again, welcome back to life,” Dean said as he pulled out onto the road.
They were all hungry so they decided to stop at a burger joint. “You know, I was thinking,” Dean said when they got their food and sat down. “When you’ve got your stitches out and are well on your way to being mended, maybe we could put some feelers out for a job. I’d like you to come with us, that is, if you want to. Sam and I were talking, and we agree that another set of hands might be helpful. Of course, you’re human and squishy again, so you’ll have to listen to us and learn how to hunt as a human.”
“Yeah,” Liam nodded. “I can do that.” It didn’t come as a surprise to him that the brothers were getting restless. They’d probably never been in one place so long in most of their lives. Liam’s big concern was whether or not he could adapt to being human fast enough that he didn’t end up putting his friend and his lover in danger. Dean had such a bad reaction to his death that he’d sold his soul. What lengths would he go to on a job to protect his ex-vampire boyfriend?
After they finished eating they made one more stop for Natalie so she could pick some things up for the house. Then they went back to the place they’d been calling home. Dean plopped on the couch and sighed. “I am exhausted.” He looked to Liam and noticed the now familiar glazed over look in his eyes. “You look like you’re back among the clouds and feeling better. Why don’t we go up to the bathroom and I’ll wash all the glue and crap off you from those monitor stickies, and then we’ll take a nap. You look like you’re about to fall asleep again, and I could really go for a nap in a comfortable bed.”
“Okay,” Liam nodded compliantly and let himself be led up the stairs.
They went into the bathroom and closed the door. Liam took his shirt off and Dean grabbed a washcloth, wetting it in the sink. He lovingly washed and picked any remaining glue and grime off his lover from the stickies, being careful of the bandages. When he was done Liam slid his hands up Dean’s shirt and leaned in to kiss him passionately. The kiss was returned with equal passion, but Dean gently pushed him away. “I know you think you may want to, but none of that,” Dean said, cupping Liam’s cheek with his hand. “You’ve still got stitches. I don’t wanna do anything that might hurt you or set you back. Let’s just rest, okay?”
Liam sighed and nodded. He followed Dean to their bedroom and they both undressed before climbing into bed. Dean pulled his lover close, glad to be able to cuddle with him again after five days. Liam rested his head on Dean’s shoulder, put an arm around his waist, and wrapped a leg around his. “I love you,” Liam mumbled and closed his eyes.
“I love you too,” Dean kissed the top of his head. “Very much.”
Liam was asleep soon, and Dean not far behind. Liam woke about five hours later in excruciating pain. The medication had worn off. Now there wasn’t a button to push for relief. He would have to go find the pill bottle and take one, then wait for it to get into his system. He didn’t do that though. As much as he liked the pain relief, he wanted to be clear headed for a little while.
He untangled himself from Dean, careful not to wake him, and he made his way down to the kitchen to forage for something to eat. He found a bowl of pasta salad that looked good, so he grabbed a fork and a bowl and got himself some. After a few minutes he felt Dean behind him. “Couldn’t sleep?” Dean asked as he came in and sat down beside his partner.
“Pain meds wore off,” Liam answered truthfully before taking another bite.
“I figured,” Dean nodded. “How are you feeling?”
Liam shrugged. “Okay for having been shot.” One of his hands moved to rest on Dean’s knee.
“Take the medication if you need it,” Dean urged. “I know being in a constant fog is fun for a while, but kinda tough when all you can do is sleep. Still, it takes the edge off, and I don’t like the thought of you suffering any more than you have to.”
“Okay,” Liam nodded as he finished his food and took the dish to the sink. “I’ll take another and go back to bed.” He kissed Dean on the cheek before hunting down the pill bottle and taking one. Then he climbed back into bed and waited for the room to start spinning.
Natalie entered the kitchen and sat down beside Dean. “Your father is the most stubborn asshole I’ve ever met. Have you figured out how you’re going to keep Liam alive and safe from him?”
“I don’t know,” Dean shook his head and ran a hand over his face. “That’s part of why I brought up going on a hunt with him soon. I’ve kind of enjoyed being here, but not only am I getting restless, but I think maybe if we start moving around again we’ll be harder to find. We also have to try and find a way out of that deal if there is one so neither of us has to die.”
Natalie nodded. “That’s more of a you and Sam thing I think, but my father and I will help with the research in any way we can.”
“Thanks, Natalie,” Dean gave her a small smile. “I’m glad this whole mess brought us together. We don’t have many people we can count on.”
“I’m glad too. Making new friends is always good.”
“Alright, I’m gonna go up and cuddle with Liam some more. Not being able to do that while he was in the hospital drove me crazy.”
Dean padded up the stairs into the bedroom, slipping off his jeans and carefully climbing into the bed. Liam was still awake so he cuddled close. The blond put his ear on Dean’s chest so he could listen to his heartbeat once more. Hearing the steady rhythm again was comforting and allowed him to fall back asleep easily.
They both slept until morning. Liam was the first to open his eyes. With a sigh he pried himself away from Dean and dressed in a pair of khakis and a purple t-shirt. He went down to the kitchen where he found Sam at the table munching on a plate of scrambled eggs. “Hey, Liam,” Sam smiled at him. “Want me to make you some breakfast?”
“Nah,” Liam shook his head. “Not really hungry right now. I’m just gonna make some tea,” he said while he got everything prepared.
“Okay, but if you need anything let someone know. I’m gonna be in Patrick’s library looking for anything that might help us.”
Liam nodded and poured the boiling water in the cup and set the timer. When the tea was done he put a little sugar in it and headed out to the porch. It was probably an ill advised thing to do with John no doubt still lurking about and hellbent on killing him, but he didn’t want to live his life in fear. He sat on the porch swing and rocked back and forth while sipping the hot liquid and thinking. He was glad to be alive and to be able to do something as simple as enjoy a cup of tea again, but everything was such a mess because he just hadn’t waited until he was fully healed. Dean was going to die because of him in a year unless they were able to pull a miracle out of their asses.
After a little while Natalie joined him, sinking down on the swing beside him. “They’re both in the library now looking for a solution, and maybe they’ll find one. Maybe you won’t have to lose him. But, if they can’t fix this and you have to say goodbye, are you prepared to do that?”
“No,” Liam answered honestly. “I wanted to be human again partly so I wouldn’t have to watch people I care about die anymore. Knowing he’s going to die so I can live just makes it all the worse.” He set his cup on a little table and Natalie leaned in to rest her head on his shoulder and comfort him.
Liam let himself relax for a few moments before getting up and going to the library to see Dean. His lover was buried in a book on demon lore so Liam sneaked up behind him and wrapped his arms around the man he loved. “Find anything useful?”
“Maybe. Sam’s looking deeper into that while I look for anything else that might be here.”
Liam kissed his cheek, hoping like hell the lead would pan out. “I’ve been thinking. I’d really like to go on a proper date. I mean, I’m already aware of the fact that life with you will not be normal or ordinary, but I’m hoping you can at least indulge me in a little normal couple activity once in a while.”
“I think I can manage a date,” Dean nodded. “When did you want to go?”
“Tonight.”
Dean raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure you’re feeling up for that? You just got out of the hospital yesterday.”
Liam nodded. “I’m sore as hell, but I’m not going to break or something. I also won’t plan anything strenuous.”
“Okay,” Dean nodded. “I’m going to stay here the rest of the afternoon, but come dinner time, I’m all yours.”
“Good,” Liam smiled and moved around to give Dean a tender kiss and squeeze his ass. “I’ll see you at dinner time.”
Liam was a little hungry right then so he went to the kitchen. There was just enough roast beef left for one sandwich, so that’s what he made himself. When he finished he looked for Natalie to enlist her help with part of the evening. She was quite willing to help him. Then he went up to the bedroom and dug out his laptop to fire it up so he could go online and look for a nice restaurant to go to. He really wanted the evening to be special.
