Liam opened his eyes that morning to find Dean watching him sleep. “I think someone doesn't trust me,” he said as he rolled to face his husband.
Dean let out a deep sigh. “Liam, that baby isn't even born yet and he torched a Prince of Hell. I'm sorry, but that worries me.”
The blond frowned and sat up. “So a powerful being must be evil?”
“No, I...” Dean ran his hands through his hair in frustration. “I'm not implying anything about you. I know you. I knew you before I knew what gifts you have. I don't know this baby, and he was fathered by Lucifer.”
Liam shrugged and got out of bed to get dressed. “Lucifer is... Well, Lucifer is Lucifer. And may I point out that he's not a demon. He's an archangel who needs his wings cut off and shoved up his ass, but I digress.”
Dean started pulling some clothes on. “I'm actually not finding a lot of comfort in that. Angels, at least the ones I've met, Cas excluded most of the time, are dicks.”
“At least try things my way. I don't think it'll take long for us to figure things out. And if I have somehow miscalculated, we'll talk.”
Sam was in the library looking at what was left of the Colt. “Can you fix it?” Dean asked his brother.
Sam sighed and picked it up. “I hope so.” They heard a phone start buzzing. “It's not me.”
Dean checked his phone. “Not me either.”
They searched around and Sam found the phone under one of the books. “Must be one of Mom's,” he said as he picked it up and answered. “Hello?”
“Oh, uh, Sam? I didn't know... Uh, it's Alicia. Banes.” she sounded a little freaked out.
“Alicia? Hey, what's going on?” Sam put the phone on speaker.
“Yeah, sorry to um... Mary gave me a couple different numbers to reach her, and we thought-”
“No,” her brother Max could be heard in the background.
“I thought Mary would be down to help. Uh, be our backup on this.”
“You sound crazy,” Max was protesting.
“Hey, guys. It's Dean. Uh, you okay?” Dean spoke up.
“Yeah, depends who you ask. Um, Mom was hunting this witch who's killed people all over Wyoming. Uh, anyway, Mom usually checks in with us, but she's sort of disappeared,” Alicia sounded worried.
“Oh my god. She did not disappear. She's busy,” Max wasn't nearly as worried.
“Wait, so your mom is missing?” Dean tried to clarify.
“Where are you guys?” Sam asked.
“We're on our way to Rock River, Wyoming. But Max thinks I'm overreacting, but I-” Alicia tried to explain before Max interrupted her again.
“Because you're being dramatic. Mom's fine. Stop bothering them.”
“We're not bothered,” Liam assured them. “Hey, why don't you text us your address? We'll meet you.”
“You will?” Alicia seemed relieved.
“We'll see you soon,” Sam said as he hung up the phone.
“What the hell man?” Dean wasn't thrilled. “Lucifer Jr. could pop any minute, and we don't know where Cas took Kelly.”
“Do I look worried to you?” Liam asked.
“No, but you're fucking insane. I say that with love.”
Liam picked up a book to throw it, but Sam snatched it out of his hand and set it back down. “Dean, look, there's not much we can do about Kelly or the baby other than wait. We've just been sitting here. Let's get out and...” Sam sighed. “Their mom's on a hunting trip and hasn't been home in a week.”
Dean shook his head. “Alright, let's go.”
They drove to a charming little bed and breakfast where Alicia texted that her mother was going. Dean parked beside them and they got out. “Hey, guys,” Sam greeted them.
“Alright, well, we're here. What do you got?” Dean still seemed unhappy about the whole thing.
“Our mom was after a borrower witch,” Alicia explained.
“Okay, so you tracked your mom here?”
“We tracked her to the only vegan restaurant in town. They told us where she was staying.”
“Anything else?” Sam asked.
“I got the bartender's phone number,” Max smirked and Alicia rolled her eyes. Then Max eyed the Impala. “That car is still major.”
“You want the tour?” Dean offered.
“Don't encourage him,” Liam said to Max.
Max then eyed Liam. “You and Dean still an item?”
“You're getting a tour of the car,” Dean answered the question.
While Dean and Max were focused on the car Alicia turned to Sam and Liam. “Yeah. Max isn't really feeling this.”
“Yeah, I hadn't noticed,” Sam said with a bit of sarcasm.
“He always thinks he knows Mom better, but it's because they're both natural witches. It's who they are.”
“And what about you? Uh, with magic.”
“Nah, I don't have it. It's just kind of a lot of noise to me. Magic is definitely their thing, you know?”
Sam nodded in understanding. “Yeah. When I was growing up, Dean and my dad had the same thing with hunting, that bond.”
“What about with Mary?”
Sam didn't seem to know what to say. “That's a very complicated issue,” Liam answered for him. “Lately she's been very involved in her own hunting.”
Alicia nodded with a small smile. “Mary's a great hunter.”
When Dean and Max were done talking about the car Dean whistled to get Sam's attention. “Let's go find your mom,” Sam motioned for Alicia to walk around with them.
Alicia spotted her mom's car parked at the side of the house. “Well, her car's here.”
“Well, no one's trying to hide it. That's good news,” Dean said as he kept walking around.
They heard a noise, and they all turned to see a man coming out of the cellar. He stared at them awkwardly for a moment before quickly scurrying away. “Not weird at all,” Max said sarcastically.
Dean turned to the younger hunters. “Alright, look, anything happens, you guys stay behind us.”
Alicia pulled out a knife with runes carved in it. “Yeah. Sure.”
They decided to go inside the house first. Everything seemed fairly normal. “Can I help you?” A man behind the counter greeted them.
Sam stepped forward. “Yes, please. We're looking for, uh-”
“Max? Alicia? What are you two doing here?” they heard a woman's voice from the staircase.
“Mom!” Alicia ran to hug her.
“Sam and Dean Winchester, meet the great Tasha Banes,” Max introduced them.
Tasha greeted them with a warm smile. “The kids have told me very nice things.”
“Alicia basically made them come just in case you were in peril,” Max told her, giving his sister an I told you so look.
“Well, that was unnecessary, but very nice of you all the same. Andy, can we get a couple rooms for my children and their friends?”
Andy came out from behind the counter. “Sure. It'll just be a minute.”
“Great. You can wait in my room. I have wine.” They all followed her to her room and she opened a bottle, pouring some for everyone. “So Rock River's a dead end. No witches here, unfortunately. Thought this was the place...”
“Well, then why didn't you call us?” Alicia asked. “I mean we-” Alex cleared his throat. “I called and texted a lot.”
Tasha gave her daughter a slight frown. “I'm sorry, baby. My phone hasn't been charging all day. Oh, but I did find a fantastic acupuncturist.”
“No, but you always call on the fourth day of a hunt, no matter what,” Alicia didn't seem to feel much better.
“Honestly, babe, it just slipped my mind. Put some music on. Oh. I ordered food from that vegan place, but no deliveries.”
“Oh, I can get it,” Alicia offered.
“Oh, I'll grab it,” Sam offered and handed his glass to Liam. “Uh, you guys stay, hang out, catch up.”
Liam looked at the two glasses in his hand. “More for me.”
Dean took the extra away. “Or not.”
Liam's eyes narrowed. “Oh, we're not doing the double standard thing tonight.”
Tasha chuckled. “Alicia told me how protective you can be, Dean.”
Dean shrugged. “Did she also tell you he has a talent for getting into trouble?”
“No more than you,” Liam argued.
“I'm a little more careful than you are.”
“That can be argued,” Liam said as he took a big sip of wine.
A little while later Tasha noticed Dean checking his phone. “Expecting a call?” she asked.
“Oh,” Dean jumped a little. “Guess not.” He looked over to Alicia and Max who were having a discussion. Liam was asleep in a chair. “You know, I gotta say, you did a bang up job with those two.”
“You must be drunk,” Tasha chuckled.
“Off of wine?”
“Your partner is out cold.”
“He's a light weight. Plus he's been burning the candle at both ends lately.”
Tasha's attention turned back to her kids. “Yeah. I did the best I could for Max and Alicia. I got lucky.”
Dean shook his head in disagreement. “I see how you are with them. It's good.”
“Alicia said you grew up in the life.”
“Yeah, my dad raised me and Sam to hunt.”
“And your mother?”
Dean looked away, trying to figure out how to answer without giving too much away. “It's complicated.”
Tasha chuckled at that. “Yeah. Family's always complicated. Parents always seem smart and strong and perfect. It's only when you grow up that you realize that they're just people.”
Sam returned a short time later with the food. “Hey,” he greeted everyone as he entered with a bag full of containers.
“Oh! Who's hungry?” Tasha got up to open the bag.
“Me!” Alicia got up to grab some.
Liam woke up and blinked a few times. “That is not food.”
“I agree,” Dean nodded. “I think I saw a burger joint down the road.” He picked up his coat and motioned for Sam and Liam to follow him. “We'll be right back.”
They were about halfway down the hall when Sam stopped them and pulled a missing person flyer out of his coat pocket. “I didn't want to say anything in front of them, but...” He showed them the flyer. “This was posted outside the restaurant. That guy we saw earlier coming out of the cellar? He's been missing for a month.”
Dean looked at the flyer. “Okay, that's weird. Well, maybe Tasha's wrong. Maybe there is something going on here.”
Liam crossed his arms. “I knew something didn't feel right.”
Dean rolled his eyes. “And you were gonna say something when?”
“It's not like you ever listen to me. Honestly though, I didn't wanna say anything in front of them. I... I'd like to know exactly what is going on here before ruining their happy moment.”
“I agree with you there. Alright, the great and powerful Oz, where do you think we should start?”
“That cellar.”
“Agreed,” Sam nodded and they headed outside.
They found the cellar, and Sam picked the lock. They all took a step back when Dean pulled the door open. “Smells like death.”
“Probably because that's what it is,” Liam commented.
“Go ahead,” Dean motioned to his brother.
“What?” Sam raised an eyebrow.
“You're both giant babies,” Liam sighed as he grabbed Dean's flashlight from his hand and made his way down the stairs.
Sam and Dean followed. When Dean turned the light on there were bodies covered in plastic all over. When they pulled the plastic back they found both the man they saw leaving the cellar earlier and the guy at the front desk. One body was laid out on a table. Dean slowly pulled the plastic back to reveal Tasha. “Son of a bitch. Her heart's been ripped out.”
“So have theirs,” Sam was examining the other bodies.
“I know Necromancy when I see it,” Liam shook his head. “She found the witch. The question is, what do we do now?”
Dean shook his head. “I don't know. If this is the real Tasha, then who the hell was I talking to up there?”
“A doll,” Liam answered the question.
Dean's eyes narrowed. “Have you seen this before?”
“Yes. Jason and I worked a similar case. You were talking to Tasha, but a version the witch can control. It's hard to really explain.”
They heard footsteps coming and drew their guns. They relaxed when they saw it was Max. “Hey,” Max greeted them.
“Hey, Max,” Sam tried to hide his mother's body from him by standing in front of it.
“I saw the light. You guys find some trouble to get into?”
“No, we were just uh...” Sam tried to block him, but Max pushed past.
“I just...” He saw his mother and froze.
Liam took a step toward him. “I know this is difficult, which is why you should let us-”
Max took off and headed back into the house. They followed him as he barged back into the room and pulled his sister away from the creature. “Who are you?” he demanded.
“Max?” Alicia was confused.
He shoved the creature roughly against the wall. “What did you do to my mom?”
“Max! What are you...?” Alicia moved to break it up, but Sam grabbed her arm and pulled her back.
“That's not your mom,” Sam whispered to her.
“What are you doing?” the creature seemed just as confused.
Max slammed her against the wall again. “I don't know what kind of thing you are, but you are not my mom.” His eyes glowed purple as he started to perform a spell. “Reveal. Now! Reveal!”
The creature went still and they could hear crackling noises. “The the room, end of the hall. Top of the stairs.”
Max nodded and ran out the door. Dean and Liam followed him. The man from the front desk rushed them in the hall, but Liam kicked him hard enough in the chest that he flew back and out the window. They burst into the room at the end of the hall and found the older woman who owned the place. She only seemed annoyed. “Really? People are trying to sleep.”
Dean pointed his gun at her. “Alright, lady, craft time's over.”
With a wave of her hand Dean went flying. Liam growled, and with a quick motioned slammed her hard into the wall, but she quickly composed herself. “Oh. How lucky am I? Such an impressive witch. Maybe you'll take the deal the last bitch wouldn't.”
“I'm not a witch. Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with that,” Liam added quickly to not offend Max.
Max was glaring daggers at her. “My mother, you killed her.”
“Did I?” she seemed smug.
“What did you do to those people?” Dean demanded.
“Oh. Let me show you.” Both Dean and Max grimaced as images flashed through their minds. “I'm reaching the end of my very long life, and it's a problem.”
“I just bet it is,” Liam wasn't phased. “And it really sounds like a you problem.”
“Unless I can find someone to take the burden, to take my magic.”
Liam laughed at that. “That's what you were told? You're damned no matter what you do.”
“And how would you know?” she snapped at him.
“He knows things like that,” Dean answered.
The witch ignored them and turned her attention to Max. “When your mother found me, and when I realized what she was, I offered to teach her. I offered her my power. But even dying, she was rude. So I made her into one of my creatures. That doll has all of your mother's memories. It's her. Mostly.”
“Mostly being the key word here,” Liam pointed out.
“Just like the others. Rick, Andy. They do what I want, when I want. I'm old. I like things a certain way.”
“No!” Max shouted. He tried casting a spell on her, but nothing happened.
“Nice try. If you kill me, well, then all of them just fall apart. So here's the offer. You take my power. You take my burden, and my doll, your mother, will stay with you and your sister forever. Just one big happy family.”
Max looked like he was considering the deal. “Max, no. Listen to me. Your mother is gone, okay?” Dean tried to talk him out of it. “It's awful and it sucks, but that's-” he doubled over when the witch cast another spell to shut him up.
Liam threw her against the wall again. “Don't touch him, bitch!”
The witch tried to cast the same spell on the blond, but it had no effect. “You clearly have power,” she seemed impressed. “So why deny the same to your friend?” She took her ring off her finger and held it out toward Max. “So do we have a deal? Take it and the deal is done.”
Max looked like he was still thinking about it. Liam rolled his eyes and held out his hand. Dean's gun flew to him and he shot the witch in the heart. “Go to hell.”
Max turned to Liam. “Why did you...?”
Dean straightened himself up and put a hand on Max's shoulder. “Max, listen to me. He had to, okay? That deal wasn't with her. It was with a demon. You even touch that magic and you lose your soul.”
“Dean!” they heard Sam yell from the other room. They ran back to find Alicia on the floor, a knife in her stomach. She wasn't moving. Sam was kneeling beside her, but he stood when they entered. “She, uh...”
Max could barely breathe as he rushed over to his sister. “Alicia? What? Please. No.”
“Can you do anything?” Sam looked to Liam.
“Maybe,” the blond answered.
“No,” Dean shook his head. “I'm sorry, Max, but I just can't let him take that gamble.”
“Let me?” Liam raised an eyebrow at that.
“Liam, please,” Dean practically begged. “I know it would take pretty much everything you've got, and very likely kill you. We've lost enough tonight.”
“He's right,” Max agreed quietly. “Alicia wouldn't want you to risk yourself just for her,”
Liam nodded. “Alright. I probably don't have it in me.”
Sam then turned to Max. “I'm so sorry.”
Max was fighting back tears. “I could've saved them if I had just taken Alicia seriously.”
“Come on, man, you can't think like that,” Dean said to try and help.
“Just stop talking. Please.”
They all stood silent for a moment to allow Max to gather himself. “We'll, uh, go get some supplies. We have to, uh...” Sam bit his lip, unsure of how to put it.
“We gotta burn the bodies, Max,” Dean said it for him.
Max gave a little nod of understanding. “Like my dad. I can do it. I should do it. You three get out of here.”
“You sure about that?” Dean asked. “Because we can-”
“I'm sure.”
Rather than argue the guys gathered their things and headed home. Sam watched his brother for a few minutes, noticing Dean was shaken by the whole thing. “You guys did the right thing. You saved him.”
Dean scoffed at that. “Yeah, he seemed super saved. You know, I was watching them, this loving family. The kind we should've had. And now just like that, it's gone.”
“Dean, you couldn't let Max make some deal for his soul.”
“Sam, we do terrible things all the time to save each other. I mean, that's what you do for family. Who am I to stop him?”
“I was pretty pissed when you sold your soul for me,” Liam commented.
Dean shrugged. “But that ended up turning out for the better.”
“I can't argue too much, but Max isn't you. It's a miracle things turned out as well as they did.”
“Well, he's strong. He'll be all right,” Sam tried to assure his brother.
Dean sighed. “Yeah, I'm not so sure.”
