Back in the bunker Lucifer seemed calm as he stood in the war room with Chuck looking around. “So where were you?” Lucifer asked.
“That’s a long story. How do you feel? I healed you.”
“Yeah. Didn’t ask you to.”
“Son, be reasonable.”
Astiratu started laughing. “Daddy made a funny!”
Chuck turned his gaze to the half angel. “One, I hate it when you call me that.”
“Lighten up, it's a term of endearment, sort of.”
“And two, I don't need your help with this. I'm trying to talk to my son.”
“Is it time for us to go play catch in the yard?” Lucifer said sarcastically. “Screw you.”
“Listen, I know I’ve been gone for awhile. I’ve missed a few million birthdays.”
“Yeah, and the second your apes send a distress flare, boom. Daddy’s home.”
“That’s not what happened.”
“Hey, these apes saved your ass,” Dean growled, a bit offended.
Lucifer snapped his fingers, and looked puzzled when nothing happened. “He can’t hurt you,” Chuck said.
“Oh, so you’re controlling me now!” Lucifer snapped.
“It’s just a safeguard.”
“And you're dumber than I thought,” Astiratu said. “Remember the last time you hurt my human? Your ass got owned by me.”
Lucifer growled. “You know, there was a time you disliked humans as much as I do.”
Astiratu shrugged. “So I grew emotionally. That's actually a good thing, you know. I can't say I'm a huge fan of the entire species, but there a few I like having around.”
“So you did just what Dad wanted. Never thought I'd see that.”
Astiratu's eyes narrowed at the comment. “I did what I wanted. Yes, it's also what Daddy wanted, but I still have free will, and you know better than to suggest that anyone, him included, can force me to do anything I don't want to.”
“Hey guys?” Sam interrupted them. “Think we can try and focus here? You know, end of the world, common enemy, all that?”
“Enemy of my enemy is my friend,” Lucifer said as he moved to stand right in front of Chuck. “Team Amara. Go Amara.”
“You don't mean that,” Chuck seemed a little hurt.
“You’re really not gonna say it.” The two just stared at each other for a moment.
“He’s not gonna say what?” Sam asked.
“Screw you,” Lucifer growled. “Screw all of you.”
“Well screw you too,” Astiratu snorted.
Lucifer stormed away and Chuck sighed. “Kids... And you,” he looked to Astiratu, “your mouth isn't helping matters any. It never does, but that never seems to stop you.”
“You made me,” Astiratu pointed out. “And I'm your son just as much as Lucifer is. Younger, the baby if you will, but I never got what I wanted from you either.”
“And what is that?”
“Appreciation maybe. I feel very taken for granted because you seem to have this attitude that if it breaks I'll fix it.”
“That's partly what I created you for.”
“But I still have feelings! Would an occasional pat on the back and a 'good job' have killed you? You have never shown any hint that you actually give a damn about me.”
Chuck sighed again. “Like I said, kids...” With that he walked away.
“Unbelievable,” the half angel growled.
“Hey,” Dean put his hand on Astiratu's shoulder. “So I guess everybody's got father issues, but we have to focus on the bigger picture here. Amara is going to end the world. And as much as I hate it, we need Lucifer to be on board, so let's go run some interference.”
The three of them went down the hall to the bedrooms, and Sam knocked hard on the door where loud rock music was being played. “Lucifer! You know, sometime you’re gonna have to come out and talk to God,” Sam shouted over the music.
There was no response. “It’s like the worst episode of Full House ever,” Dean commented.
Then the music stopped. “If Dad has something to say to me, I’ll hear it from him! Until then, I’ll be in my room,” Lucifer shouted through the door.
“It’s not your room,” Dean shouted back.
“It's my room,” Sam said.
“Whatever,” Dean shook his head and walked away.
Next they went into the kitchen to talk to Chuck while he made pancakes. “Talk to him,” Sam urged.
Chuck shook his head. “Won’t do any good.”
“Why not?”
“Because I can’t give him what he wants.”
“And what's that?” Dean asked.
“What everyone wants. My sister, my children, you humans. An apology. A big, wet I’m sorry.”
“Well, so give it to him. It’s not like he’s asking for a weapon, or for hell, or for heaven. He’s asking for words.”
“I can’t say I’m sorry if I’m not.” Three plates of pancakes suddenly moved from the stove to in front of Sam, Dean, and Astiratu. “What he wants an apology for, I did it for humanity. For the world. Look, Lucifer wants what everybody wants: Amara gone, okay? Let’s just give him a little time to cool off.”
“That's your problem,” Astiratu said. “You like the challenge of me arguing with you, but you always have to be right. No one else can question you. You speak and it must be done. I've pointed it out to you before, but it hasn't seem to have sunk in. You're not perfect.”
Chuck seemed annoyed at that. “So you disagree that Lucifer was becoming a danger?”
“No, I don't. Something did have to be done, and you made a decision. But he's here now, and he could be of some help I suppose. You made us kiss and make up after all that happened. I mean, you literally had us kiss. Don't you think what's good for the goose is also good for the gander?”
“Not a good analogy because you and I are not equals.”
“Exactly my point! You can't make nice with anyone because we're all your underlings. Your ego crushes mine, and that is saying something.”
Chuck sighed. “Alright, I've heard you, and that's enough. Now eat. You still have an earthly body to sustain, and you haven't been taking care of it as you should.”
“What's this now?” Dean entered the conversation.
The half angel grumbled. “I really don't need a speech from you right now. Just pass the butter and syrup, I'll eat the damn pancakes.”
Eventually they got Lucifer and Chuck to agree to talk. The two sat down in chairs opposite the other. “One of you is gonna have to, uh, go first. You know what? Lucifer, you agreed to have a sit down if God would show, so...” Sam motioned to Chuck.
“And Chuck, you did say you’d talk,” Dean added.
“Him first. I’m the one who’s owed an explanation,” Lucifer said, and Chuck let out an exasperated sigh.
“Okay, let’s try ‘I feel’ statements,” Dean suggested.
“I am sorry that you feel that I betrayed you. That I acted without cause,” Chuck started and Lucifer shook his head. “I’m sorry that you can’t see you gave me no choice.”
Lucifer turned to Sam, Dean, and Astiratu. “You heard that, right?”
“We all know that you are God, but maybe could you be a little less lordly?” Sam suggested. “I mean, Astiratu did have a bit of a point back in the kitchen, even if he didn't express it in a very respectful manner.”
“He makes very good points, but I am the lord,” Chuck argued.
“Wow. There he goes,” Lucifer rolled his eyes.
“I did what I had to do!” Chuck shouted. “To create the world I had to lock Amara away. And when the mark corrupted you, and I saw you posed a threat to humankind, I did the same with you.”
“No, you betrayed me. You gave me the mark to lock her away, and when it changed me, when it did what the mark inevitably does, you threw me away.”
“No, son. The mark... You always cast a jaundiced glance at humans. The mark didn’t change you. It just made you more of what you already were.”
“Can't argue too much with that,” Astiratu commented.
“And you're innocent?” Lucifer snapped. “Dislike of humans is one of the things we bonded over.”
“Yeah, well, time changes things. I've only tried to rule the world like twice.”
“And I stopped him both times,” Chuck said. “He isn't what you are.”
“What I am is your son. Your child,” Lucifer got a bit emotional.
“Why should I put you first above all others?”
Lucifer turned to the guys again. “You have any idea what it’s like to argue with your father when your father is God?”
“Who exactly do you think you're talking to?” Astiratu asked. “I've been arguing with him for millennia.”
Lucifer turned back to Chuck. “Everything is a tautology with you. Everything is because I told you so. Everything’s, it had to be done.”
“Pretty sure that’s all fathers,” Dean said.
Lucifer sat up a little straighter. “Okay, fine. Big picture, as God. You did what you had to do. But little picture? You sucked at being a dad.”
“Can't argue with that either,” Astiratu said.
Chuck glared at the half angel. “You be quiet.” He turned back to Lucifer. “Okay, maybe I didn’t handle everything perfectly. But tell me, could I have kept humankind safe with you on the board? I know about your little bid to replace me with the angels. Okay, new God, what would you have done about you?”
“That is not the point,” Lucifer grumbled.
“I can’t believe I’m actually about to say this, but, um. Lucifer is right,” Sam spoke up. “All he wants is an apology, and you’re too concerned about being right to give him one. But apologies aren’t always about being right. Sometimes they’re just about apologizing.”
“Yeah, and the great thing about apologies is you don’t even have to mean them. You know, I lie and tell Sam I’m sorry all the time,” Dean added, which earned him a glare some Sam.
“You don't give me fake apologies, do you?” Astiratu asked with a raised eyebrow.
Dean let out a nervous little chuckle. “Of course not. You're different.”
“I don't believe you, but smart answer.”
“Enough from the peanut gallery,” Chuck said as he waved a hand and Sam and Dean were gone. Astiratu opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out. He glared angrily as he kept trying to talk, but couldn't.
“That's one way to shut him up,” Lucifer mused. “Probably the only way.”
“What would you have done?” Chuck asked Lucifer.
“It doesn’t matter. You are my father and you forsook me.”
“I did. I was supposed to love all creation equally. I wasn’t supposed to have favorites. But you, you were mine. I gave you the mark because I loved you the most, because I thought you were strong enough to bear it. And when I saw that I was wrong, when I watched my choice devour my most cherished son, I hated myself, and so I punished you. And I am so sorry.”
Lucifer smiled a little. “I don't know if you really meant that, but thank you.”
As Lucifer walked away Chuck turned to Astiratu. “I kept you here because I wanted you to hear that.”
“A fake apology?” Astiratu blinked.
“Is that what you think?”
“Well, you only apologized after Sam said you didn't actually have to mean it. I mean, what you said about Lucifer being your favorite was true enough.”
“It was, but like you said, you're the baby of the family. You act like a spoiled toddler as well, that's your problem.”
The half angel scoffed. “How am I spoiled? I've been kept just happy enough to keep doing my job.”
“I don't do that for everyone. Not even Lucifer.”
“I'm the only one who can demolish heaven in a giant temper tantrum.”
“You think I would let you get that far? As I've always reminded you; I created you, and so I can destroy you.”
“Well, you didn't do anything when you're children were fighting for control. You didn't stop the apocalypse, I did with help. And you let Amara get pretty damn far before you showed up.”
“But I did show up to stop Amara. And I gave you Dean Winchester's soul to appease you.”
“That was really you?”
“It was. Look, I know I've placed a lot on you, but I've never given you more than what I thought you could handle. You are my unique creation. I put myself into you. To say I don't care, well, that just isn't true.”
Astiratu took a deep breath and let it all sink in. “Being unique has led to a lonely existence, but for the most part I've been okay with that. All I ever wanted was a little appreciation and affection from you.”
“Keeping you happy is my affection. And no, you weren't okay with being alone. You got some companionship from Jesus, but he's usually too busy to give you the kind of attention you deserve. So I created Dean. It took a while, but I was trying to get things just right. And it looks like I did.”
“Yeah, I fell for him, sure enough. He says he loves me, but... You made him straight.”
“Don't give him such a hard time about that. I had my reasons for making him a normal skirt chaser. He had to have a high sex drive to be matched with you. But there was also something put deep inside him that would activate in your presence. I had to send a cupid to get him to acknowledge it, but his love for you, and his need for you, they are quite real.”
“Alright,” the half angel sighed. “I will keep that in mind. But we really should get back to the task at hand.”
“So, you're not going to say anything about everything I just told you,” Chuck seemed a little frustrated.
“I heard you,” Astiratu replied. “Annoying as fuck, isn't it?” the half angel smirked a little as he went to find Lucifer and the brothers.
“Kids,” Chuck mumbled under his breath.
“So, are we good?” Dean asked as Astiratu and Chuck entered the war room. “All father issues taken care of?”
“Somewhat,” Astiratu answered.
Chuck shook his head. “Can anybody win with you?”
“No,” Dean and Lucifer said in unison.
“All that aside, what now?” Sam asked.
“We trap Amara. Put her back in the box,” Chuck answered.
“Wait, what?” Dean did a double take.
“Well, you were right. She needs to be destroyed. But I won’t kill her.”
“Why not?”
“Amara’s been caged for billions of years, but you know, she was always there. She had to be there. You know, yin and yang. Dark and light.”
“Same reason I'm only allowed to maim Lucifer and not kill him?” Astiratu asked.
“Yes, that's exactly it.”
“English for the rest of us,” Dean was trying to follow.
Chuck sighed. “There’s a harmony, a balance in the universe. Light needs dark. Dark needs light. If you blow one of them up, then, I mean...”
“It wouldn’t be a good thing,” Lucifer finished the thought.
Chuck nodded. “It’d be really not a good thing. Like end of reality not good.”
Sam nodded in understanding. “Okay, so we gift wrap Amara. I mean, we got the team back together, so...”
“Not quite. We’re still a few members short of the original line up.”
“Yeah, first time it took the combined strength of me and my brothers to weaken Amara before Daddy finished her off,” Lucifer told them.
“Even then it was close. Now with just the two of us, we’ll lose.”
“You have me, which you didn't before,” Astiratu pointed out. “Won't that make a difference?”
“Maybe,” Chuck thought about it. “You can hurt her, but I don't think your power equals that of several archangels.”
“Okay, so what? We need more, uh, group therapy between you and the archangels if we wanna have a shot?” Dean asked.
Chuck shook his head. “Well, Michael’s in no condition to fight, and it’s outside of my power to bring Gabriel and Raphael back.”
“But you restored Castiel,” Sam pointed out.
“Archangels are different. They’re the stuff of primordial creation. Rebuilding them, that’s... It’s time we don’t have.”
“So what do you need to win?” Sam asked.
“What do you have? So what do we bring to the table to make up for archangel power?”
“We could try and find more Hands of God,” Sam suggested.
Chuck held up his hands. “A little redundant.”
“And it didn't seem to help Lucifer much anyway,” Astiratu pointed out.
“Well, maybe if you would have tried to help me,” Lucifer shot back.
“Don't start,” Chuck warned.
“What about Crowley?” Dean suggested. “Big demon power, former king of hell. He was a player in his day.”
“Right,” Astiratu nodded. “As odd as your relationship with Crowley is, if we go, so do the demons. They're selfish bastards, but they have a dog in the fight same as us.”
“We have the angels,” Lucifer said.
“Rowena. I mean, she's a snake, but she's a powerful witch,” Sam suggested.
“With the Book of the Damned,” Astiratu added. “That would help.”
Chuck looked to Astiratu. “You're my brilliant warrior. What do you think?”
The half angel gave it a little thought. “Well... Each group on their own has the power to hurt her, but not defeat her. However, if we can get everyone together for an orchestrated attack, it should do her in. Power in numbers and all that.”
“Getting these groups to enlist and then work together, it's not gonna be easy,” Sam didn't seem that hopeful.
“Couldn't you just compel them?” Dean asked Chuck.
“I invented free will for a reason.”
“So we're tying our hands on principle?”
“No, you can't make an effective soldier by force. They have to choose this fight.”
“That's very true,” Astiratu agreed.
“But they're gonna want to know they're backing a winner,” Dean pointed out.
Lucifer looked to Chuck. “So...”
“I'll take Crowley,” Dean announced. “Since as it has been pointed out, I have an odd relationship with him.”
“I'll work on the angels,” Lucifer said. “My baby brother isn't the only one who can rally a crowd.”
“When you call me your brother like that...” Astiratu looked a little sick.
Lucifer shrugged. “No relationship is perfect.”
Sam sighed. “I guess I should take Rowena then, if I can find her.”
“I can help you with that,” Chuck said. “I will send you all to your destinations.”
Suddenly Dean, Lucifer, and Sam were gone. Astiratu looked around the room. “I feel so useless just standing here and waiting.”
“Your part will come later,” Chuck assured him. “You will decide how best to use what we get. That is, after all, your talent.”
“It is, and I'm already thinking about it.” He jumped a little in surprise when Chuck reached out and hugged him. “What was that?”
“Me caving on another one of your demands. You are very demanding, you know. I do love you, but you make it so difficult sometimes.”
“Dean says the same thing.”
“I think it's because you aren't as sure of yourself as you should be.”
The half angel thought about that a moment. “Well, Lucifer hooked me, and you know how that turned out. And Moses... I'm supposed to be good at reading people, but never saw that one coming.”
“You weren't supposed to resist him the way you did.”
“Yeah, you tell me that after the fact. I was afraid. And so I failed my very first assignment.”
“You were still fairly young, and it was your first time on earth. And you learned from that failure. Also, things still worked out in the end.”
Astiratu huffed. “Yeah, after I got hurt. I got my heart broken twice in the same century.”
Chuck put a hand on Astiratu's shoulder. “Son, everyone gets hurt from time to time. What matters is how you pick yourself back up.”
Dean reappeared. “Crowley's in.”
Lucifer and Sam weren't far behind. The angels and Rowena agreed to the plan as well. They gathered in the situation room, Sam standing at the head of the table. “We assemble our band of brothers, hit Amara with everything we've got. Then when she's weak...” he motioned to Chuck.
“I finish her off,” Chuck said.
“So, a page from the original playbook. This time with witches and demons subbing for archangels.”
“Exactly,” Lucifer nodded.
“I still don't like it,” Dean sighed. “Why trap her when you can kill her, you know? I mean, you got to admit, there's a lot less room for error if you shoot to kill.”
“I explained why,” Chuck was getting a little irritated.
“Right, but why keep her in play? So she can escape and we can go through this all over again?”
“Dean, what is this about?” Sam asked, a little worried.
“Nothing. Am I the only one thinking rational here?”
“It's about her. Sam, it's about his girlfriend,” Lucifer said.
“Okay. Shut up,” Dean snapped.
“I mean, think about it. Dean Winchester meets the biggest evil in the universe, and he takes a pass? Come on. Now he wants Daddy to do what he couldn't.”
“Is he right?” Sam asked his brother.
“Oh, I'm not getting into it with him,” Dean growled. “Not gonna happen.”
“Hey, Dean. Come on, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. We opened a vein for you,” Lucifer taunted.
“Lucifer hit a nerve because he's right,” Astiratu wasn't at all happy about it.
“Why do you never leave well enough alone?” Dean growled. “It has nothing to do with us, how many times do I have to tell you that?”
“Oh, she was only your deepest desire. Do you really think I forgot about that?”
“I tried to kill her. And it didn't work.”
“Maybe it didn't work because you didn't want it to work. Maybe you didn't want to kill her,” Chuck theorized.
“You want God to kill Amara because you don't want Amara to be killed?” Sam was confused by that.
“Yeah, maybe there's a part of me that just can't hurt her,” Dean admitted. “But if she's already dead...”
“Then she's already dead. Right.”
“Well, that got weird,” Lucifer commented.
“Dean, we always sweat this stuff, these choices. But for once we have God on our side. I mean, for once we can actually just do things his way,” Sam said to his brother.
Sam, Dean, Astiratu, and Lucifer went to the abandoned power plant they chose for the showdown. When Crowley arrived he stood by Lucifer. “I don't hold grudges. Besides, that dog collar was a lovely touch, really made my eyes pop. Almost wore it here today.”
Lucifer smirked. “Oh, I'm glad you're such a good sport.” He turned to Rowena when she entered. “Hey, Red. Looking gorgeous as ever. Hey, I think a little apology is in order.”
Rowena scoffed. “You think you're the first man to try and kill me?” Crowley rolled his eyes at that. “Hello, Fergus.”
“Mother.”
Chuck appeared before them in a blaze of light. “Hello, my children. Rowena. Crowley. It's good to finally meet you in person.”
Rowena seemed a bit flushed. “Sorry about, well, everything I've ever done in my life. Really, you can't have been a fan.”
“Oh, yeah, I've been quietly rooting against you both for some time now. Although, I can't deny you're one of my guilty pleasures.”
Rowena giggled at that, and Crowley rolled his eyes again. “Oh god.”
“Alright, no flirting, and no fighting,” Dean said.
“Yeah, and no deals,” Sam added. “No talks about who is owed what if we survive this.”
“Nobody likes each other. It doesn't matter. We only have the fight ahead.”
“Amara's looking for me. But I'm warded against her, for now,” Chuck told them. “The second I drop the warding she'll show. She'll be expecting a fight, and we'll give it to her. Shock and awe. You have your troops in position?” Rowena raised her hand. “Yes, Rowena?”
“Fabulous plan, God, but doesn't this strategy strike anyone as a wee bit un strategic? Shouldn't we at least try to catch her off guard? Or have some sort of strategy?”
“Seems to me that the first response should come from the most disposable force,” Crowley said.
“Right! Good argument, Doggie. Demons first, it is,” Lucifer nodded.
Crowley ignored the barb. “The weakest should go first. Naturally, that means the witches.”
Astiratu let out a loud whistle to draw everyone's attention. “Okay, since we're sailing into my territory, you're all going to shut your pie holes and listen to me. I've given this some thought, and the witches will go first. Rowena, you're going to lure her here.”
“What makes you think I can?”
“You found her before. Reach out again.”
“What about me?” Lucifer asked. “I don't put it past you to sacrifice me somehow.”
The half angel sighed. “Lucifer, darling, we're all putting our crap aside for this, even me.” A spear appeared in his hand and he offered it to Lucifer. “You and I are going last, and we're going to do a duet.”
Lucifer took the spear. “I kinda like the sound of that.”
As soon as the plan was laid out they all stood before Chuck. “Once she's been weakened, I will take the mark back from Amara and use it to seal her away. You ready?” Chuck looked to Sam.
“Yeah,” Sam nodded.
“Wait, what?” Dean was shocked.
“God and I talked about this. Someone needs to bear the mark,” Sam said.
“Well, that should be me. I've had it before. I'm damaged goods,” Dean argued.
“Exactly. You've already been tainted,” Chuck pointed out. “I can't transfer it to you. Sam volunteered.”
“It should be me,” Astiratu volunteered. “I'm the strongest in the room, and what's one more cross to bear.”
“You tainted would be much worse than Lucifer tainted,” Chuck argued against the idea.
“You said she's already a part of me, and I'm no worse for wear because of it.”
“Exactly. That piece of her already in you makes you more vulnerable. I made the good in you stronger for a reason. It has to be Sam.”
“And what happens when the mark turns you psycho, then what?” Dean asked his brother.
“You lock me up where I can't hurt anyone and you throw away the key.”
“Sam, no. What about your family?”
“They've gotten along fine without me the past few years.”
“Don't start that.”
“Dean, you told me you couldn't beat Amara, that it would have to be me. Well, this is it. We talked about this. It's time to do the smart thing.”
“So, what am I supposed to do, just sit by and watch?”
“I'll figure something out,” Astiratu joined the conversation. “I might have to get pretty damn creative, but I've done it before.”
“You weren't able to help me,” Dean pointed out.
“Once the bitch is sealed away I'll retreat back into the shadows and I'll keep working on it. You will just have to trust me. Can you do that?”
“Yeah,” Dean nodded with a deep sigh.
“Okay. Are we ready?” the half angel looked around the room. Everyone nodded. “Rowena, go.”
Rowena's eyes went white as she reached out. “Hello, Amara,” Rowena greeted Amara in her head.
“Hello, witch. How did you find me?”
“Been inside your head once before. Easy enough to find my way back. Take it you're still looking for God? Well, I'm with him right now.” She looked to Chuck for a moment before going out a side door.
Sure enough Amara was right there. “He's here.”
“Yes. Right inside. Our deal holds? Safe passage back in time? I went out on a limb for you, betrayed God, of all people.”
“You didn't betray God. You betrayed me. I knew this was a trap the moment you called. I didn't care. All I've ever wanted is a one on one with my brother. And you've just given it to me. The question is how am I going to repay you?” Rowena responded by hurling purple lightning at her. Amara scoffed. “That tickles. Do you really think the power of one witch can hurt me?”
“I'm not just one witch.”
Rowena struck again, this time with the power of her sister witches behind her. The force of the attack knocked Amara back. “Enough,” Amara got back up and reflected the spell back. Rowena went flying back to the ground and was still. “Points for trying.”
Just then the clouds above started to gather. Amara only chuckled as a bolt of bright light struck her from the sky, shaking the building. As soon as the angels retreated the demons poured in in smoke form. They swarmed around her, lifting her up from the ground as she screamed in rage. Crowley went out to leave his vessel and join the fight, throwing her into the side of a car hard enough to smash it.
As soon as the demons retreated Amara picked herself up and staggered inside, panting heavily with effort. “Hello, brother,” she greeted Chuck. “You cheated. Again.”
A blast of bright white fire came from Astiratu and knocked her back again. As she moved back, Lucifer lunged forward with the spear and ran her through from behind. When Lucifer pulled the spear out Amara fell to her knees bloodied and burned.
Chuck stood over his sister. “I'm sorry. For this, for everything.”
Her breath was labored as she looked up at him. “An apology at last. What's sorry to me? I spent millions of years crammed into that cage alone and afraid. Wishing, begging for death because of you! And what was my crime, brother?”
“The world needed to be born! And you wouldn't let me! Amara, you give me no choice.”
“That's your story. Not mine. The real reason you banished me, why I couldn't be allowed to exist you couldn't stand it. Yeah, we’re equals. We weren't great or powerful because we stood only in relation to each other. You think you made the archangels to bring light? No. You made them to create lesser beings, to make you large.” She forced herself to her feet to meet his gaze. “To make you Lord. It was ego! You wanted to be big!”
“That's true. But it isn't the whole truth. There's a value, a glory in creation that's greater and truer than my pride or my ego. Call it grace, call it being! Whatever it is, it didn't come from my hands. It was there waiting to be born. It just is, as you and I just were. Since you've been freed, I know that you've seen it.” He glanced at Dean. “Felt it.”
Amara looked over to Dean as well, and he quickly looked away. “It didn't have to be like this. I loved you, brother. Well, you've won again. Finish it. Kill me.”
“I'm sorry,” Chuck frowned, looking sad.
The mark started fading from her shoulder and Sam winced as it started appearing on his arm. “No!” Amara cried when she realized what was happening.
“I'm so sorry,” Chuck said again.
“Not again! Not ever again!” Amara gathered the last bit of her strength and grabbed Chuck by the throat, hoisting him up off the ground. Lucifer charged from behind again, but this time Amara knocked him back into a support column. “Goodbye, nephew.” There was a bright flash of light and Castiel's vessel slumped on the ground.
“Cas!” Dean cried as he ran over to check on his friend.
The mark appeared back on Amara's shoulder as Chuck struggled against her. “I'd die a million times and murder you a million more before going back there! Tell me, if you won't change, why should I?”
Black tendrils gathered at her feet and snaked upward before attacking Chuck. Bright light poured out of each hole they pierced. “Amara, no!” Dean cried out. “Don't!”
She turned her attention to Dean for just a second, and in that second Astiratu launched another flaming attack. Amara screamed and dropped Chuck, who was still on the floor. She glared at the half angel, her body shaking slightly. “What are you?” she gasped. “Why can't I defend against you?”
Astiratu stood over her, glaring sharply. “To answer your first question, I am your nephew as well, one who wasn't born yet when you were locked away. I am angel, I am human, I am him,” he motioned to Chuck. “An inspired and unique creation built for events such as this. And to answer your second question, I am also of you.”
“What?” she didn't understand.
“I didn't know until just recently myself. Your brother confessed to putting a drop of your essence in my mixing bowl, so you and I are connected. He put two drops of himself into me, so I am more connected to him than I'd like. Something for you to think about, something for you to both think about actually, is that he did it to see if your energies could co mingle. His contribution is stronger, of course, but here I am. A piece of both of you, and I haven't imploded.”
“Enough with the speech!” Amara snapped. “My brother will watch this world, everything he created, everything he loves turn to ash.” With that she was gone.
