To All Those Enjoying This Story: This will be my last post for a little while as I take care
of some personal business. I hope to be back writing soon, and hope to find you still

CHAPTER 19
    㼠160;      Fin sat at his desk purposely ignoring his partner. All morning long Munch had made
references to their night out, trying to lure Fin into a conversation about it, but Fin wasn’t biting.
He’d already accepted that Munch was going to have some access to his private life, but he
wasn’t interested in having it spill over onto the job.
            “So what are your thoughts on the Bailey case?” Munch broke the silence and tried to
break through to Fin. “You get in touch with the owner of that club where she worked?”
            “Nah.” Fin kept his eyes glued to the in in front of him. “He’s still dodging my calls. If
he doesn’t make himself available today, though, I’ll send out some uni’s to pick him up.”
            Munch tapped his pen on his desk. “Speaking of clubs,” he made it obvious that he was
looking for an opening, “that was a fairly decent one you suggesteYou You hang out there a lot?”
            Fin shrugged in response. Munch huffed and looked away. He didn’t like being ignored.
He turned back to his partner.
            “Sam seemed a little upset.” That got Fin’s attention.
            “Upset about what?”
            “Well, considering she didn’t seem to have a problem with you the other night,” Munch let
his meaning hang in the air before continuing, “shall I make an ass out of both of us and assume it
had to do with Tori and me?”
            “Why don’t you ask her?”
            “Because, my conversationally impaired friend, she may not tell me the whole truth right
away. She’s sometimes not so forthcoming with her real feelings, if you can imagine that.”
            Fin frowned at him. “So what do you want from me?”
            “How about some perspective? A little heads up on the situation. She say anything221;221;
            Fin thought it over. In the end he couldn’t resist being able to tell Munch something he
didn’t know. “I think she&#;s w;s worried.”
            “About?” Munch prompted.
            “You. And herself.”
             Munch stared at him. “Thank you. That cleared things up immensely.”
            “Look,” Fin put down the file, “she didn’t really concern herself with your ex’s ‘cause she
didn’t think they were worth much, right? But she knows Tori’s different. Maybe she’s worried
about having to share you now. Or losing your attention altoer.&er.”
            “She told you that?”
            “No.” Fin went back to his file. “But I think I got a pretty good read on her.”
            Munch smiled appreciatively. “I’m impressed. You two must be getting pretty close.”
            Fin thought back to the events that took place on his sofa and declined to answer. Munch
took out his phone.
            “I’ll give her a call and see if we can set up something for tonight.”
            “Can’t.”
            “And why not, pray tell?”
            “She’s busy.”
            “So she’ll cancel. What could be more important than dinner with me?”
            Again, Fin couldn’t resist. “Me.”
            Munch put the phone away. “Maybe I should start worrying.”

            Sam waited as Fin unlocked the door to his apartment. She hung back for a moment
knowing he liked to go over it before they went in. She watched him as he quickly scanned the
apartment for signs of an intrusion. God, he’s beautiful.
            Fin was wearing a black turtleneck and black slacks with a cream-colored suede jacket.
The outfit went perfectly with his skin and hair color, and Sam thought he looked downright
edible.
          #160#160;He had invited her to The Culture Center for a showing of Yoruban artwork and
literature. Sam had been fascinated by the writings of Amos Tutuola. Fin told her that his family
often speculated over whether or not they were related to the famous author. She made a mental
note to research him and find out.
            Fin himself had fallen in love with a palm-sized figurine of a warrior tribesman that was on
display. Made of handcrafted wood, it showed extensive details of the warrior’s facial features.
Fin was captivated by his expression and spent quite a bit of time studying it.
            Sam noticed how much he liked it, and under the pretense of using the restroom,
purchased it anonymously. She slipped it into her purse before they left, planning to surprise him
with it later.
            Fin came back into the hall and, takinr har hand, led her into the apartment. He closed the
door, then backed her into it until she was pinned. He gave her a moment to protest. When she
didn’t, he ran his hands down her hips then around to her backside.
      &;     “Are you getting fresh with me, Detective?”
            “Ah-huh.” He kissed her throat, and she lifted her chin to give him more of it.
            “Good.” Sam took both his hands in hers and led him away from the door. They then
resettled on the sofa.
            “Hey.” Sam tried to get Fin’s attention while he kissed her shoulder. “I have something
for you.”
            He gave her a look with a smirk attached to the end of it. She laughed.
            “I have something else for you. Close your eyes.”
            His expression clearly said he didn’t do that kind of thing. Hers said she didn’t care. Fin
sighed heavily then closed his eyes.
            “Now hold out your hands.”
            He decided to save time and held them out. Sam took the figurine from her purse and
carefully unwrapped it. Excited to see his reaction, she placed it in his hands.
            Fin opened his eyes and looked at the figure. He fingered it, looked at Sam, then, taking
her hand, placed it firmly back in it.
            “You shouldn’t have done that.”
            It wasn’t the reaction she had been expecting. “I thought you really liked it?”
            “I did.” Fin got up from the sofa.
            “‘Did’? But not anymore? I thought you’d like to have it. That’s why I bought it.”
   0;�        “But I didn’t ask you to, did I?”
            It was not a tone he usually used with her. Already a little hurt that he wasn’t happy with
her gift, Sam felt the sting of the remark even more. “I know you didn’t,” she said, the hurt
audible in her voice, “that’s why I wanted to surprise you with it.” She got to her feet. “I think
I’d better just go.”
            Fin touched her elbow as she walked past him and drew her back. “Wait.” He
concentrated, trying to find the right words. “I appreciate what you were trying to do. But I
know what that piece cost. There’s no way I can accept it.”
            “Even if it’s from me?”
            “Baby, especially if it’s from you.”
            “But why? If I have the money to . . . ”
            “That’s just it,” Fin faced the issue, “you do. I can’t return the favor for this.”
            “I wasn’t expecting you to.”
            “That’s beside the point.” Fin took a breath then continued. “It just doesn’t feel right to
me.”
            “Then what am I supposed to do, Fin? Keep score? Track everything to make sure my
total stays under yours? That doesn’t feel right to me.” Sam continued to the door. On the way
she stopped at an end table and stood the figure on it.
            “I got that because I wanted you to have it. It’s yours. If you don’t want it, you can
donate it back to the Center.” She opened the door and left.
            Fin shut his eyes at the sight of her leaving. “Damn.”
