Episode 22: A matter of Honor
Being as careful as he could, Jesse laid Honor down on his bed and then sat down beside her, stroking her cheek gently. She looked up at him with a hazy expression in her shifting green eyes. Tentatively, she moved her hand up to rest on his thigh. Jesse placed his other hand over it, giving it a squeeze.
“Everything’s going to be alright, Honor,” he reassured her. “Adam will figure this out. He’s a genius.”
Her eyelids drooped briefly. “What if he can’t?” she asked quietly. “What then?”
“Don’t even think about that, Honor. Just focus on getting better.”
Tears came to her eyes. “Jesse?”
“Yes?”
“I’m scared.”
Jesse tried to swallow the rapidly forming lump in his throat. “Me, too,” he admitted, leaning closer to her face and resting one arm on the pillow around the back of her head, resting his other hand on her stomach. “I just found you. The last thing I want is to lose you to this.”
“Do something for me?”
“Anything that you want.”
“Don’t leave me alone.” Honor’s voice held a distinct note of panic as she clutched at his arm. “I don’t want to be alone.”
He smiled at her and scooted her over slightly so that he could lie down on his side beside her. “You have my word. Just don’t die on me. I might not ever forgive you for leaving me.”
Honor managed a weak smile. “Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.”
Jesse wrapped his arms around her and held her as close as he could without hurting her. Adam had said to keep her still and quiet, so as much as he wanted to use his body to comfort her, he did his best to keep it in check.
Honor rolled over to face him. He had failed miserably, despite his best efforts. She curled up against his chest. “I know, Jesse. If Adam hadn’t been so insistent on me staying calm and quiet…” She left the thought unfinished as he knew exactly how she’d finish it. “It’s so unfair. It’s the one thing that would relax me the most and I’m not allowed.”
He stroked her hair silently for a few minutes. “If you can’t have that, how about the next best thing?” he asked, lightly rubbing her neck.
She closed her eyes, moaning a little. “I think I can learn to live with that,” she replied hoarsely.
Jesse helped her sit up and get out of her shirt. Because she’d been planning on changing out of what she was currently wearing and into something a lot more comfortable, she didn’t have any underwear on. Topless now, he eased her onto her stomach with her head at the edge of his bed. He smiled at the sight, remembering the first time he’d seen her like this. It had been just after they’d rescued Claudia from Ashlocke. She’d been so shy that day. He would never forget how she blushed when she touched his hand after he told her how he felt. He would forever hold that day in his memory.
“What are you thinking about?” she asked sleepily. “I’m getting a warm fuzzy feeling from you.”
“Remember the first time I gave you a back rub?”
She smiled and nodded. “How could I forget? No one had ever done anything like that for me before. Although I do have to admit that it isn’t the massage that’s foremost in my mind right now.”
“I know how you feel.”
“Oh, so you’re a telempath now, too, eh?” she teased.
“Keep that up and I might just have to flip you over,” he growled into her ear.
She squirmed. “Your breath tickles!” she squealed.
He moved over and laid his head down on her back, wrapping his arms around her protectively. “What did I ever do without you?”
“Good question.”
He sat up so that she could roll over and sit up. Her loosed red hair spilled down over her front, covering her in a manner more suggestive than any lingerie possibly could. Again, he felt his body reacting to the sight. “Damn it!”
She reached up and stroked his cheek. “I know.”
“Adam better find some way to help you or I’ll never forgive him. All I want is to bury myself in you, to enjoy this time that we have together. I have no idea what it would do to you, though. Would it have no effect on your condition or would it make this progress faster? Could it kill you if you got too worked up?”
“This sounds really morbid, but I can think of worse ways to go.”
“That is morbid,” he told her, pulling her close. “I don’t want to loose you.”
“I don’t want that, either.”
Jesse was silent for a long time. “Hey, Honor? If Adam does find a way to help you, what then? Where do we go from there?”
“I only know two things, Jesse, and as far as I’m concerned they’re the only things that matter. Item the first: I want to be with you for as long as is possible. Item the second: I want to keep up with my music. Before you came into my life, it was what made me the happiest.”
He nodded. “I’m glad to hear that you want me. How are we going to work this, though? I’m here in Sanctuary. This is my home, my family, not to mention my team. You have your house with Claudia. If we’re going to be together, the distance could be a problem.”
“I feel weird being in that house, what with everything that’s happened there. All those people are dead because of one man’s need to get back at another. I’ve been giving serious thought to selling it and moving into a smaller place closer to the edge of town.”
“Closer to Sanctuary, you mean.”
“You know that’s what I meant. It doesn’t have to be anything special, really.”
“Why don’t you come stay here, with me? I don’t want to be apart from you for very long. If you were here, that would make me incredibly happy. Never mind that your powers would be a great help.”
“I’d considered it, but if things are going the way I think they’re going between Adam and Claudia, it would be awkward if both of us were to stay here.”
“At first, maybe, but-“
“Jesse?” Adam’s voice called from the other side of the door. “Can you and Honor come to the lab? I think I’ve got it.”
Honor looked up, hope flashing in her eyes. She reached for her shirt. “We’ll be right there, Adam,” she answered him.
“Don’t rush, Honor,” he warned and then headed back to the lab.
Jesse looked at her, a hue smiled on his face. “I told you so,” he crowed.
Honor stood up and took a couple steps before collapsing to the ground, holding her stomach with one hand and her head with the other.
“Honor!” Jesse dropped down beside her. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“I can’t feel my legs,” she said, panicking. “My stomach feels like someone’s squeezing it and my head-“ She doubled over in pain. “I can feel everyone in Sanctuary. It hurts so much!”
He got up and opened the door, then came back and picked her up. “Let’s get you into the lab.”
Adam and Claudia were waiting for them, concerned looks on their faces. “If you’d put Honor into the chair, Jesse, I’ll explain what I’m going to do.”
She shook her head. “Adam, don’t bother with the explanation. “I don’t really want to know. I hurt too much to care.”
Claudia nodded. “Get going, Adam. I don’t want to prolong this anymore than necessary.”
Adam injected something into her shoulder before turning the diagnostic machine on. That was the last thing that Honor knew before she passed out from the sedative he’d given her.
When she came to, she was in Jesse’s bed under the covers, wearing a pair of her own baggy pajamas. She felt weak, drained. She tried to sit up, but got dizzy before she was even half way up, so she gave up and lay back down. The pain was gone and the overwhelming emotions she’d felt before going into the lab were gone. She couldn’t feel anyone and it was wonderful.
The door opened, so she turned her head towards it. It was Claudia, Adam, and Jesse. All were smiling.
“So, doc, how’m I doin’?” she asked, her words slurring together.
“I guess the drugs haven’t worn off yet,” said Claudia. She sat down on the foot of the bed, resting one hand on Honor’s foot.
“You’re doing just fine, Honor,” Adam reassured her. “You’re not in danger anymore. You just need to recover from the procedure, but that should be a walk in the park.”
“I’ll live?”
“You have a nice, full life ahead of you,” he confirmed. “Now that I know you’re awake and coherent, I’ll leave you and Jesse alone. You two have some talking to do.” He walked over to her and gave her a fatherly kiss on the forehead before he and Claudia left the room.
Jesse immediately lay down beside her. “How do you feel?”
“Strange,” she replied. “I’ve had those telempathic powers for so long, it feels odd to not be getting a reading off anyone, no matter how minor.”
“Well, to hear Adam tell it, you won’t ever again. From studying Emma’s gift, he figured out how to block the part of your mind that lets you read others.”
“He can do that?”
“He only did it to save you the pain. If he’d had more time, he says that he could have helped you grow into the gift, but you were to far gone for that. You should still be able to access your gravitational powers, but that’s it.”
She pondered that. “Well, I can’t say I’m sorry to know it’s gone, but that does mean that I have to relearn to do things the old fashioned way.”
“You haven’t had the telempathy for very long and it wasn’t very strong or reliable, so I can’t imagine that you got all that used to using it.”
She gave him a sly smile. “Not really, but sex will be different.”
“You read me while we were doing that?” he asked, incredulously.
“It’s not like I could help it,” she said, doing her best to sound innocent. “The things you did to me brought me into a heightened emotional state and that facilitated the use of that gift. Being surrounded by your emotions was an indescribable experience. To know what you were feeling helped to put me at ease and told me what I should do. In fact, it was because of this that I let things progress the way they did the first time. Knowing that your feelings were genuine gave me courage. Are you complaining about that?”
“I guess I can’t,” he said weakly. “Are you ok about loosing them?”
Honor snorted. “I’m confident enough in myself and in you that it’s not a major deal. I know you now.”
“You probably know me better than anyone.”
“Probably,” she agreed.
“So, sex without the use of telempathy,” Jesse mused.
“It’ll be weird. If you think about it, I’ve only ever done it with the telempathy. I’m not even sure where to start without it.”
“I’m sure I can give you a few pointers,” he said, grinning wickedly.
She laughed. “Down boy, down!”
“Not on your life! You’ve been unconscious for the better part of three days now. I was terrified that you’d never wake up again. Still am. I’ve been good, but I don’t think I can take it any longer.”
“Be gentle,” she whispered before he kissed her.
“Do you think she’ll be ok, Adam?” Claudia asked him as she sipped at her tea. The other members of Mutant X were out taking a well-deserved break from Jesse and his constant pacing and worrying. She and Adam were using the time to be together and truly alone for the first time in three days. They could have done things together at night, but by the end of the day, both were so tired from keeping busy lest they worry about Honor too much that they fell asleep almost instantly. Claudia had continued to teach her classes, but she felt uneasy staying in that big house all by herself, so she came back to Sanctuary every night.
“If she didn’t have Jesse, I’d be worried, but she does so I’m not.”
“You didn’t tell Jesse the whole truth, did you?”
“No.” Adam set his teacup down on the table and met her eyes. “I blocked off Honor’s telempathy and repaired the physical damage done by the mutation, but there will be severe side effects. The biggest of which is an inability to have children.”
“That’s something of a relief, really, the way those two go at it.”
“Do I detect a note of sadness in your voice, Claudia?”
“Maybe. I’m too old to be thinking about children.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
She leaned her head on his shoulder. “I know what you meant. We’ve been so busy that we haven’t been able to try again.”
“Well, Jesse and Honor will be occupied for a few hours and the others won’t be back until later tonight.” Adam patted the cushions they were seated on. “These should be comfortable enough.”
“Adam! Have you lost your mind?” she asked, jerking upright.
He gave her a level look. “They’re more comfortable than that cot.”
Her eyes danced with mischief. “You’re so naughty! I didn’t think you had it in you.”
He leered at her. “I think you’ll find that I’m just full of surprises, my dear,” he said before pouncing.
Caught off guard, Claudia collapsed to the cushions, giggling. She brought her hands up and pushed against his chest as he tried to lean in to kiss her. In retaliation, he dug his fingers into her sides, causing her to break into hysterical giggling.
“Stop that!” she laughed, gasping for air. “That’s not fair!”
“Oh? And you trying to push me away is?”
“Who says I was trying to push you away? Not I.”
“Then what are you doing?”
“Just relax.”
Trusting her, he let her push him up enough to give her the space to unbutton his shirt. Understanding, he idly ran his hand up her thigh, pushing her skirt up as he did so, while he waited for her to finish. She ran her hands over his warm skin, letting him lower himself enough to kiss her. They lay entangled in each other’s arms for a time, just enjoying the chance to be together, reveling in the taste of each other’s mouths.
Adam couldn’t take it much longer. He pulled up a little, pleading with her. Claudia swallowed nervously, but nodded. He sat up and took his pants off before coming back to her. Clearing his mind of any other thought, he slid her skirt up to her waist.
Unexpectedly, he laughed. “Well, now I know you’re little secret. And you say I’m naughty.”
She gave him an even look. “Being a man you wouldn’t understand the unattractiveness of panty lines,” she said calmly.
He shook his head and lowered himself onto her, gently sliding inside. Claudia wrapped her arms around him. She opened her mind to him and let his emotions surround her.
She blinked up at him, confused. He’d stopped moving. Lost as she had been in his mind, she hadn’t realized that it was over. Adam was stroking her cheek, an exhausted and concerned look on his face.
“Are you alright?”
She flinched as he pulled out. “I feel strange.”
“Strange good or strange bad?”
“Strange good.”
“That’s a relief, but, to be honest, it was more of a relief that you didn’t throw me across the room.”
She flashed him a smile. “I had a little talk with Emma two days ago and we sorted this thing of mine out. I wasn’t entirely sure it would work. I’m sorry for not telling you, but I couldn’t risk getting your hopes up.”
Adam kissed her. “Well, I’m certainly not complaining about the results.” He sat up and pulled his clothes back on while she smoothed her skirt back down.
“Perhaps we should have a talk with Jesse and Honor,” Claudia suggested. “Now that she’s out of the woods and we have this sorted out, we need to figure out where all of this is going.”
He nodded. “I agree, but let’s wait for them to come out of there. In the meantime, I have something to ask you.”
Three hours later, Jesse and Honor joined them upstairs around the table. Honor had some color back in her face and she looked healthier than she had in years. She was dressed in the same jeans she’d been wearing before she’d been brought to Sanctuary, but the t-shirt was Jesse’s.
“So, you plan on selling the house,” Adam started.
Honor nodded. “Yes, that’s right.”
“Might I suggest an alternative?” She nodded. “Why not turn it into a safe house? They’re filling up faster than I can establish new ones. I know you aren’t keen on living there anymore, so this is my proposal. Why don’t you come and live here with us? Claudia has agreed to stay at the house and run it until I can find someone who can devote more time to it than she can.”
She nodded. “Well, that would certainly save me the time and effort of cleaning it and putting it up for sale. Mutant X has done so much for me.” That sounds like a good idea. Jesse wants me to come here, too,” she said, squeezing Jesse’s hand. “I just have one question though, Claudia. After Adam finds a replacement for you, where will you go after that?”
The older woman smiled, shoving a lock of black hair behind one ear. “Well, it’s likely that I would stay on at the house. It’s more convenient to the university than Sanctuary. Besides that, I’m frequently away. You know that.”
Honor made a face. “Good point.”
“So it’s settles then?” Jesse asked hopefully. “Honor stays here? With us?”
Adam nodded. “Even though the two of you are involved, I’m going to give Honor one of the other rooms. It’s always good to have some private space. Why don’t you go help her get set up there, Jesse? When you’ve finished with that, take her back to the house so that she can get her things.”
He didn’t need any further prompting. Jesse jumped up, pulling a laughing Honor with him.
Several hours and many trips to and from the Helix later, Honor and Jesse collapsed, exhausted, on the bed in Honor’s old room. Honor looked around; taking one last look at the room she’d spent most of her life in.
“Well,” she said sadly. “This is it. This is likely going to be the last time I’ll ever be in this room again.”
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Jesse asked her.
“I was sure about selling this place and moving out,” she pointed out. “At least I have an idea as to who’ll be living here.”
“You have no idea how happy I am that you decided to come live with us.”
“Just because I’m living in Sanctuary doesn’t mean that I’m going to run around with Mutant X,” she warned. “I’ll help out once in a while, but that’s it.”
“Come on,” he said, standing up. “Let’s get back to Sanctuary. It’s almost diner time.”
Honor laughed and got up off the bed. “I swear, you’re a giant walking stomach!”
He looked wounded. “There’s more to me than my stomach.”
She punched him in the shoulder. “Sure, sure. Let’s go. I don’t want you to starve.”
Hand in hand, they walked out of the house and onto the Helix. They strapped themselves in and headed back.
