Chapter Twenty

New Years Eve

Archangel entered the State Rooms clutching a report. His face full of concern. He looked at the party in full swing and saw Alfred. He limped over and spoke into Alfred’s ear. Alfred nodded and immediately went to find Hawke and Kristien.

Archangel sat patiently waiting in the lounge taking in the warmth from the huge log fire in the fireplace. Dominic and Hawke walked in first. Both men looked very happy and Hawke, Archangel swore he was positively glowing with happiness. Being a father suited Hawke. Archangel felt privileged at being part of bringing Hawke’s family together.

“Michael, you are missing one hell of a party.” Hawke told the spy. “Join us.”

Archangel twisted his moustache with his fingers. “It looks really good.”

“It is.” Dominic raised his beer glass and drank from it.

“Where’s Kristien?” Archangel asked looking for her.

Kristien entered the room in a beautiful dark blue ball gown with diamonds on it, followed by Special Agent Carsten. Every man in the room paused and watched her gracefully enter. All of them in awe of her. Hawke proudly walked over to her and placed his arm around her waist. “How’s Metteo?” He whispered into her ear and gently placed a kiss on her warm cheek.

Kristien smiled. “Happier now he’s had a feed.”

“I am sorry to gatecrash but I thought this should come to your attention rather than wait.” Archangel handed a USB stick to Kristien and she uploaded it into the computer on the desk. The large screen displayed all the information regarding North Laos. A couple of grainy satellite photo’s were also included, showing a compound and some people. Hawke stood up and looked at the screen. “There is some information that there are possibly some Americans being held but….”

“You’ve found Saint John!” Hawke exclaimed studying the photos on the screen and he pointed to one of the figures.

Dominic sat on the sofa shaking his head and placed it into his hands in despair. Kristien carefully watched Dominic and then allowed her eyes to come back to the screen.

“No, well I don’t think so Hawke, but I felt you needed this information.” Archangel replied. “We came across it not by our usual channels hence the Committee won’t sanction any help from the FIRM on this one.” Archangel continued. “As I said possibly some Americans, so we’re waiting for the pentagon on this.”

“Doesn’t matter.” Hawke replied and took the file from Archangel who now stood next to the computer. Hawke looked closely at all the photo’s and information in the file. Kristien sat down at the computer and tried to enhance the photos more. Hawke eagerly waited hoping Kristien would be able to get close ups of the people that you could just make out on the satellite photo. The resolution wasn’t great but you could make out that they were men and that really was it. Hawke still blinkered was convinced it was enough information for him. He looked at one of the men, a fair headed man. “Can you get a better image of Saint John?” Hawke said pointing to the man in the photo.

Kristien set to work on the computer. “It will take a few minutes.”

“Hawke this information is at least a couple of months old it came in when I was ….er….away.” Archangel explained.

Hawke raised his eyebrow at Archangel. “A couple of months?” Hawke looked across at Dominic on the sofa. “No worries, me and Dom will go in and do some recon in The Lady, right Dom?”

Dominic remained silent.

Archangel could see the pain he had inflicted by bringing the information about possible American POWs being held in North Laos to the house. “Hawke I said the FIRM won’t sanction anything and that includes Airwolf.”

“Michael don’t you mess with me, not about this.” Hawke snapped and his cold deep blue piercing eyes narrowed at Archangel. Archangel looked away from Hawke’s determined face. He knew better than to go up against Hawke when he was like this.

“Alright, alright, I will see if I can hurry up the Pentagon but it is the Christmas holidays you know.” Archangel said looking at his watch. “I had better go.”

“I’ll walk you out.” Kristien offered politely and Archangel acknowledged her knowing she wanted to talk to him separately away from Hawke’s ears.

Dominic watched Kristien escort Archangel out and then he stood up and walked over to Hawke who was still studying everything.

“So you gonna go to Laos then?” Dominic asked already knowing the answer.

“Of course we are Dom and in the Lady.” Hawke replied still not looking up from the file.

“String, just think about this for a minute will ya.” Dominic stood up and walked over to Hawke. “You have a seven day old baby and a seven year old son that has turned up after spending all of his life in a different country not knowing who he really is. Archangel has already told you not to take Airwolf and besides where are you going to get all the money for all of this?”

“I have money.” Hawke looked up at Dominic.

“And what about Kristien?” Dominic asked Hawke.

“What about her?” Hawke put down the file and folded his arms defensively.

“See you are that wrapped up in all of this you haven’t noticed.” Dominic replied intuitively.

“Noticed what?” Hawke was in no mood to talk about anything but Saint John.

“You are losing her, if you already haven’t lost her.” Dominic stated.

Hawke instantly marched over to Dominic, clearly rattled by Dominic’s revelation. “That’s news to me.” Hawke spat through gritted teeth.

“Oh come on, she has never forgiven you for that prostitute you were with.” Dominic reminded him of Diana and the blow job that Hawke was subjected to. “You mark my words, you walk out on her now and she will never allow you back into her life, nor your children’s.”

Hawke’s anger tried to engulf him. He stood looking Dominic in the eye as he listened to Dominic’s stark warning and deep down, knew he was right but it was too preoccupied to do anything about it.

“I am going to find Saint John, then I will return, Kristie would never keep me from my children.” Hawke promised Dominic and went back to the file over on the desk. “We’ll be gone a week, two max.”

“What’s this ‘we’ stuff? I am staying put, right here being a Grandpa.” Dominic folded his arms and sat on the corner of the sofa. “I have no family remember, Caitlin, you and Kristien are it.”

“What do you mean you are staying here?” Hawke looked up from the file.

“STRING, for God’s sake will you bloody listen for once in your stubborn life.” Dominic raised his voice and stood up and marched directly over to Hawke and confronted him. “Right buddy I am only going to tell you this once, so pack up giving me that look, it won’t work with me.” Dominic ignored the aloof stare Hawke had gone back to. “You know all those years you shut yourself up at the cabin, I never moaned at you, losing Kristien the first time was hard enough for you to bear, but then when Gabrielle briefly came into your life, I hoped that you would finally stop being a hermit. I gotta admit I was wrong back then for letting you shut yourself off.”

Hawke stood, not moving, not blinking, not breathing.

“One thing keeping the Lady has done, it’s made you crawl out of your hole and see the world and guess what, you found Kristien again.” Dominic provided all the evidence for him. “Never have I seen two people more in love than you two. You’ve had your ups and downs but you still managed to produce a beautiful baby son and you got Bastian back.” Dominic sighed and took a breath, he was building up to his final lecture. “Now whether you have realised, you have a family, right here, right now, I don’t know if it’s sunk into your thick skull yet. One thing is for sure, you are NOT going to find Saint John and why YOU think you will I don’t know.” Dominic looked at Hawke and pointed a finger at him. “You are a father now and have responsibilities to them and to Kristien.”

Kristien stood in the hallway listening to the two men arguing over her. A small solitary tear escaped and rolled down her cheek. Alfred came up behind her and placed his arm affectionately around her and took her away.
