In the weeks since the prison fell, Rick, Eugene, Bob, Michonne, Ty, Abe and Shannon all stuck together, going from foot to foot while trying to find a car or shelter. After a few days of realizing they were on their own, and that nobody else could have survived the assault, Rick asked Michonne who the man was. She tearfully told him that he was The Governor. She described the rapes and beatings, and what she remembered what he did to Lori and Maggie.
"Why didn't you kill him?" Rick asked. "Why just take out his eye? You could have killed him and saved Maggie. Where is my wife? You could have stopped everything! My wife is dead because of you! My child, my kids are dead because of YOU!" Rick didn't realize that he was yelling, and pushed away Bob and Abe when they tried to restrain him. In a fit of rage, Rick reached for his gun, intending to shoot Michonne. He was restrained by Ty, and nobody remembers who threw the first punch, but it took both Abe and Bob to separate the two. Days later neither man spoke to each other as they kept walking down the road, they just kept looking for a safe place, and any sign that anybody else from the prison was still alive.
The nights were the worst. Rick would see Ty and Michonne, and Shannon and Abe act as couples. He felt as though he was the only one in the world. He refused to talk or even look in the direction of Michonne, and wondered how Ty could be with the woman who caused the death of so many of their friends. He promised himself he wouldn't help her if a horde attacks. He needed Lori so many times. He would wait until everyone was asleep or otherwise engaged in different activities, and Rick would walk off by himself, sobbing uncontrollable. Not knowing about Lori, Carl, Judy, or the Grimes children by name, not blood, was worse than anything. He didn't know if Lori was alive and alone somewhere, if she was a walker, or if she was at peace. He needed her, and never knew how much of his soul she occupied until she was absent for a few months.
A stray thunderstorm would roll through, and Rick couldn't help but think about his wife. Her father. He thought she was afraid of thunderstorms, because she would wake up and start to cry, but he never knew it was because her father would use the thunder as a way to cover the sound of him raping and beating a young Lori. He wondered where she was. In rare moments when he would let himself close his eyes he would dream of Lori. It was almost the same dream every night. He has never seen a more beautiful woman than on their wedding day. The word 'stunning' wouldn't even come close. He would dream of the two of them sitting on the front porch swing or making love in the back patio in the middle of the night. How she looked on the days their children were born. She would be standing in their back yard on a warm, sunny day, the slight breeze moving her hair just a little. She would turn toward him and he would outstretch his hand. She would hold his hand firmly, and he would pull her in for a kiss. When their lips would part she would tell him how much she loves him. Now and forever. He would be just about to say it, and his eyes would snap open. He wasn't in his back yard with his wife. He was alone, in the dark, by the side of the road trying to hide from the monsters who would try to rip you apart. He wasn't able to tell her how much he love her. How much she meant to him. How much he needs her. He would walk away and try to be quiet when he cried, but his sobs were deep. He was a broken man.
They didn't know where to go, until Eugene said that Washington, DC may have a World Health Organization facility that could hold some answers. They walked for days, and came upon towns and cities that are mere shells of what they once were. Remnants of the old world. They spotted signs of life...a place called "Terminus."
"So you wanna fight? Is that it? After all I've done for you, you wanna fight me? I'll play the game. It'll be bad for you."
"I'm almost 15. I can talk to the people at school and make you go to jail."
"You think they'll believe YOU? You little whore."
She ran to the front door. He pulled her back by her hair, and threw her on the floor. He dragged her down the hallway, ripping out clumps of her hair. She was kicking and screaming. He didn't care.
He held her face down, and pulled her shorts down. He ripped off her panties.
"Why are you doing this? No! Oh God...please stop. I hate you so much. I hate you."
He held her down until he finished, then called her a dirty little whore. He kicked her in the side, and told her to get dressed. He'll watch. He said she's got tiny little boobs. No man will want her. She's damaged goods. He never wanted kids, she was the biggest mistake he ever made. He should have forced her mother to have an abortion. I love Connie more than you. You've been nothing but a pain in my ass since the day you were born. I hate you. You are a pathetic excuse for a daughter. You could die tomorrow and I'll be happy. I should have thrown you out with the trash years ago. Get on your knees. No teeth this time. Get over here now. Now or you'll regret it later. If you think about biting me I'll kill you. Open wide. I know you can do it. Fucking whore.
Lori's eyes snapped open. She was in the same cold, dark room that was her prison for the past few weeks, months…she didn't know.
