Dean had set an alarm for seven in the morning so they could get up and leave without wasting too much time. Liam couldn’t sleep though. He kept thinking about Alice and how something must really be wrong for her to be asking for him like that. She never asked for him to come. All her life she was always content with him visiting when he could. Deep down he knew what that something was, but he didn’t want to face it. For a while he buried his face in Dean’s chest and cried, but then he stopped himself. Since Dean was probably going to be the one driving he needed to get some sleep, and he couldn’t do that with Liam bawling next to him. So the blond forced himself to lay still and quiet. He dozed off at some point, and his eyes snapped open when he heard the alarm go off.
Liam got right up and threw some clothes on. Dean moved a little slower. Apparently Liam had kept him up later than he should have. They came out of their room with their bags at the same time Sam did. “How you holding up?” Sam asked Liam as they headed down the stairs.
“I’m not,” Liam answered.
They could smell the food when they hit the bottom of the stairs. It seemed Natalie had gotten up even earlier to make sure they had a proper breakfast. She had eggs, bacon, hash browns, and buttered toast all laid out for them with a pot of coffee and a pitcher of orange juice. “I’m sorry Alice isn’t doing so good,” Natalie said as she moved to give Liam a hug when he entered the kitchen.
“Thanks,” he mumbled and hugged her back.
“Sammy, eat fast,” Dean said as he sat down and poured himself a cup of coffee. “And Liam, I know you’re upset, but you will take a pain pill and you will eat something.”
“I’m not hungry,” Liam argued.
“I understand, but at the same time I don’t care. Humans gotta eat, and that includes you now.” He took a big swig of coffee and started loading his plate with food.
Liam sighed, popping a pill as told and he sat down at the table and grabbed a plate. He only took a piece of toast and two strips of bacon to make Dean happy. Dean poured him a small glass of orange juice and set it by his plate before stroking his hair. Sam and Dean shoveled the food in their mouths while Liam only nibbled. “Here, at least try the hash browns,” Dean plopped two spoonfuls of the potatoes on his plate trying to get him to eat a little bit more. “Babe, I know you’re upset, but I need you to stay healthy.”
Liam really just wanted to get going, but he ate what was put on his plate. He knew Dean was right, that he had to keep himself going, at least long enough to see Alice again anyway. Dean seemed to be satisfied when he ate the hash browns and finished the orange juice, and Sam started loading everything in the car.
Dean and Liam stood with Natalie in the entry way. “Thanks for everything,” Dean gave Natalie a hug. “I think if Liam were in a more chatty mood he’d tell you he’s very grateful to both you and your father.”
“Whoa, you sound like you’re never coming back,” she looked a little sad.
“We’ll be back for a visit someday, but probably not for a while. I think this was the kick in the ass we needed to get ourselves on the move again. There’s some law written somewhere that Winchesters can’t stay in one place for too long, and we’ve already broken that law, so...”
“I get it,” Natalie nodded and gave Liam a sad look. “I know this weighs heavily on your mind, but don’t go letting yourself fall to pieces. All of you take care and give me a call in a few days to let me know how you’re doing.”
“We will,” Dean gave her a smile and led Liam out to the car.
Liam sat in the back seat and just stared straight ahead as they pulled away. He didn’t move or say anything, even when they stopped halfway there. Dean had to open the rear door and shake him a little. “Liam, this is where you get out and move around a little and pee. You do that now, and on the road you have to do it when you can.”
Sam and Dean exchanged worried looks as Liam silently got out of the Impala and headed to the bathroom. When he came back Dean handed him a bottle of strawberry kiwi juice. “I didn’t know what you’d like, but it’s important to keep hydrated too.” Liam got in the car and took a drink of the juice before replacing the cap and setting the bottle aside. “Sam, why don’t you drive for a little?” Dean tossed him the keys and climbed in back with Liam. “I know...” he whispered as he pulled Liam close to cuddle him.
Dean kept him close the rest of the way, urging him to drink a little every so often. Dean was really worried about his mate, but didn’t know what to do for him other than try to comfort him. When they finally reached the hospital Liam took a deep breath and got out of the car. He led the way up to Alice’s room. When he saw her lying in that bed and looking so frail, hooked up to all those machines, he felt helpless. Missy was sitting in the corner looking pretty upset herself.
When Alice saw him her eyes lit up just like they had done before. “Uncle Liam, you came!” she said weakly.
“Of course I came, as soon as I could,” he rushed over to her side and sat in a chair by her bed, taking her hand and giving it a little squeeze. “When have I ever refused my favorite girl?” he gave her a small sad smile.
She returned the smile. “Oh, your hands are so warm!”
“Yeah,” he nodded. “I have a little surprise for you.” He grabbed her hand and put two of her fingers on his wrist right over his pulse.
Her eyes widened. “You finally did it. See, I knew things would work out.”
He laughed softly. “Yeah, you seem to know everything, don’t you? A friend of a friend of Sam and Dean’s here was able to find the same spell your daddy did.”
“Come over here, you,” she motioned to Dean. Dean moved to her other side and she took his hand too, looking up into his eyes. “You take good care of my uncle. He’s very special, and I love him very much.”
“I know,” Dean nodded. “I love him very much too. When you really get to know him, it’s hard not to.”
She laughed a little and started wheezing. “It is, isn’t it?” she nodded.
It was then Alice’s gaze moved to Liam’s stomach. “You’re hurt,” she frowned.
“It’s just a scratch.”
“Liar. You got yourself shot again, didn’t you?”
Liam shook his head. “I can’t hide anything from you, can I? By now I should know better than to even try. Yes, Dean and Sam’s dad tied me up and shot me twice a week ago. It’s a very long story, but this time a surgeon at a hospital had to dig it out of me. Anyway, I’m all stitched up and healing just fine. You don’t have to worry about me.”
Her hand moved to cup his cheek. “Yes, I do. I’ll always worry about you, Uncle Liam. That’s how love works. You’re squishy now and going back to doing a very dangerous job. You better start listening now.”
“Good luck with that,” Dean mumbled.
Alice turned back to him and smiled. “I know, but then he wouldn’t be Uncle Liam and we wouldn’t love him as much as we do. By the way, you need to find the boss who holds your contract and kill him.”
Dean’s jaw hit the floor. “Wait, how do you know about that?”
Liam chuckled and shrugged. “Alice knows everything, she always has. Haven’t you been paying attention?”
“Seriously?” Dean glanced to Sam who just shrugged. “That’s all I’ve gotta do?”
Alice raised an eyebrow. “Young man, you think that will be easy?”
“No, I just… We’ve been looking for an answer for days, and it just popped right out of your mouth. I’m not used to that is all.”
She chuckled and patted his hand. “I don’t think anyone ever really gets used to being around me. Anyway, I’ve done my job now. It’s time for me to rest.” She turned back to Liam. “I really do love you. You’ve been like a second father to me. Any girl would be extremely lucky to have a step father like you, but I was the one who got the honor, and for that I am thankful.”
A tear was welled up in the corner of Liam’s eye. “I really love you too. It was me who had the honor of being your step father. I loved your daddy more than anything, and you’ll always be my favorite girl,” there was a crack in his voice.
“Uncle Liam, please know that what I want more than anything in the world is for you to be happy and all right. I think Daddy would want that too, and he’d be just as happy as I am that you’ve found love again. Now, will you stay with me while I rest a while?”
“I’ll do anything you need me to,” he nodded.
She gave him one last smile before closing her eyes. After only a few minutes her vitals went wonky before going flat. The monitor alarm went off and Liam burst into tears, leaning over her and squeezing her hand tight. A single tear slid down Dean’s cheek as he moved to stand behind his mate, gently stroking his hair to comfort him. Alice was wearing a red DNR bracelet, so all the medical staff did was send a doctor in to pronounce her. “I’m sorry for your loss,” the doctor said. “I’ll give you all a few minutes.”
Missy came up to stand beside Liam, tears streaming down her own cheeks. “She waited just for you, I’m sure of it.” She wiped her eyes and blew her nose with one of the tissues from beside the bed. “Listen, if you guys want to stay for the funeral, I guess you can stay at the house. We’ve only got one guest room, but we’ve got a couch too.”
“Do you want to stay, babe?” Dean asked, brushing a lock of hair out of his face.
Liam straightened up, wiping his eyes with both hands. “I need to.”
“Okay, we’ll stay then.” He turned to Missy. “Thanks for the offer, but I think you’ve got enough on your plate without adding three house guests. We’ll just get a motel room.” He put his hands on Liam’s shoulders. “I’m really sorry, babe. We’ll stay as long as you need to.”
Liam sat there and cried for nearly an hour until he was ready to let go. As they left Missy told him she’d call to let him know about the funeral arrangements. Dean held an arm around him the whole way back to the car and climbed in back with him again, pulling him close. “I know it hurts to lose someone you love, but you said she was ninety two. That’s pretty old, so she had a long life at least, and had you for most of it.”
“I’m three hundred and thirty eight,” Liam sniffed. “And you didn’t think I was ready to go.”
“That’s different. You’re that old because you weren’t human, you were immortal. Everyone who knows you agrees that you deserve a long human life, and to die of old age like she did.”
They reached a motel and Sam went to get them a room. As soon as they were inside Liam took off everything but his boxers and climbed into the bed. “We’re just gonna go get something to eat,” Dean said as he and Sam headed for the door. “We’ll bring you back something.”
“Don’t bother,” Liam pressed his face into the pillow. “I really don’t want anything.”
Dean sighed, but decided not to push things. Three more days passed, and Liam still refused to eat anything. The only thing Dean really pushed was water. He made Liam drink at least two small glasses a day to keep him alive. On day three Dean came back from getting dinner with what looked like a black chip bag in his hand. “Hey, I know you said you still weren’t hungry, but I saw these cinnamon and sugar pita chips and they looked really good. How’s about you trying a few?”
Liam just huffed and rolled over. Dean threw the bag down and moved over to face his mate. “Look, I have tried to be patient and understanding, but I am beginning to get really sick of this shit. You’re alive now and you have needs. You haven’t had a bite to eat since that tiny breakfast four days ago. I try to at least get you to drink some, but you piss so little and it’s so dark it really fucking scares me. I don’t get it. I gave you the gift of life twice, the second time I had to sell my own soul to do it, and you’re just going to throw it back in my face like it’s garbage? Alice loved you, and she said she just wanted you to be all right. This is far from all right. I love you, and can’t watch this anymore.”
“I love you too,” Sam said as he swallowed hard. “I mean, not like my brother does, more like a close friend, but… This is really scaring us.”
“Let’s go, Sam,” Dean said as he started packing up his things. “If he wants so fucking bad to just lie there and die, we don’t have to watch him.”
“Don’t go,” Liam pleaded, the first thing to come out of his mouth since his last words to Alice. With a heavy sigh he sat up, taking the glass of water that had been sitting on the night stand and downed it in two gulps. Then he picked up the chip bag and opened it, putting one in his mouth.
Dean nodded with a little smile and sat back down on the bed. “Much better. Now, the funeral is tomorrow morning, and you need a shower. Once you’ve had a little to eat we’ll do that.”
Liam ate a handful of the chips and took another drink of water before Dean led him into the bathroom. Liam slid off his boxers and Dean undressed as well. Liam gave him a strange look and Dean grabbed the side of his face to kiss him. “I still want to help you through this, I just need you to help yourself a little too.”
Dean turned the water on and waited until it was nice and hot to pull Liam in with him. Liam just stood there while Dean washed him, starting with his hair. He had to admit the hot water felt nice, and so did the gentle touches from Dean. When Dean finished with Liam he switched their places so he could wash himself. While Dean was washing his own hair Liam leaned in to give him a tender kiss. “Thank you for making me alive, and trying so hard to keep me that way.”
“Don’t thank me. Just start keeping yourself alive, if for nothing else than for all the people who care about you.”
“I will,” Liam nodded.
Dean finished and they got out to dry off. Liam went out to the room to get clean clothes and slipped into a fresh pair of boxers and white jeans. “Feeling any better?” Sam asked.
“Its nice to be clean again,” Liam answered. “And I do feel a little hungry now. I don’t have any cash on me right now, but if I order a pizza do you mind getting it?”
“As long as you actually eat it, not at all,” Sam answered.
Liam nodded and picked up the phone book to find a local pizza joint. He called and ordered a medium pizza with onions and mushrooms, bread sticks, and lots of garlic butter dipping sauce. Dean came out dressed. “He’s hungry and I’m buying him a pizza,” Sam told his brother.
“Very good,” Dean nodded with a little smile as he sat on the bed beside his mate. His hand lovingly ran up Liam’s back. “It’s gonna be okay. Hey, I think it’s been long enough, so when you’re finished eating I’m going to take those stitches out of you, okay?”
“Okay,” Liam said as he got his laptop out. He figured since he’d decided to live again maybe he should check some things. He logged into his bank account and a small smile appeared on his face. “Well, look at that.”
He showed the screen to Sam and Dean. Sam noticed the charge from the restaurant first. “You spent that much on one dinner?”
Liam sighed. “Not that, the deposit above it.” Right there was a deposit for fifty seven thousand, nine hundred, and forty two dollars. “I was right again.”
Sam’s eyes went wide. “What did you do, electronically rob a bank?”
“No, he didn’t” Dean said, putting his hands on Liam’s shoulders and looking proud. “He found a better way. This also means he’s paying for everything from now on.” He kissed the side of Liam’s neck and hugged him tight. “Anyway, we think there’s a werewolf in San Francisco, so, we thought, as long as you’re up for it of course, that we’d go do that job after the funeral.”
Liam nodded. “That’s fine. I’ve got to get my feet wet sometime. We still need to go to Chicago to see my guy for my papers though.”
“We’ll do that after the werewolf is dealt with.”
The pizza was delivered and Liam sat on the bed with it. He ate three small slices, dipping the crust into the garlic butter. “I’ll eat the rest later, maybe for breakfast tomorrow morning,” he said as he stacked it all neatly on top of the dresser. “Dean, will you cuddle with me for a little while?”
“Of course I will,” Dean answered as he got into bed with his lover and pulled him close. “Look, I’m sorry for the tough love earlier, but I didn’t know what else to do.”
“I understand,” Liam said as he nuzzled into Dean’s neck. “You needed to do something to shock me back into the world of the living. I just… it really hurts that she’s gone. I love her so much and I don’t wanna be in a world without her.” He started crying again.
Dean ran his fingers through his hair. “I know, but am I not enough to keep living for? What about Sam and Natalie? Sam said he loves you as a friend, and I know Natalie cares for you too.”
“You’re enough,” Liam said as he wiped the tears from his eyes. “That’s why the shock worked. I can’t lose you too.”
“Oh, yeah, I was gonna take those stitches out. Get on your back.”
Liam complied and rolled over onto his back. Dean dug out the med kit and pulled out a little pair of scissors. He knelt down on the bed to examine the incision. “Yeah, this healed pretty good,” he nodded. “You’re gonna have a scar.” He ran his fingers lightly over the ugly round scars from where the bullets pierced him. “Yep, you’re gonna have one hell of a reminder of your time spent with our father.”
Liam shrugged. “That’s alright, as long as you can still love me with a few scars.”
“Why wouldn’t I?” Dean said as he planted a few light kisses on Liam’s belly. “I love you for what’s on the inside. The flawless body didn’t hurt… But hey, scars add character I say.” Dean set to work clipping at the threads and pulling them out of Liam’s skin. “The doc did a pretty good job with these on you. When we stitch ourselves up it’s much cruder.” He clipped and pulled at the last thread, dumping it into the trash. “There, now you are officially stitch free. How’s the pain, by the way?”
“Not too bad,” Liam answered. “It’s almost gone.”
“Yeah, well, you’re gonna take a pain pill tonight and get some good sleep,” Dean ordered as he stripped down to his boxers and climbed into bed.
Liam nodded and removed his jeans so they could snuggle with as much skin contact as possible. Sam turned on the TV and found something for them to watch. They spent the rest of the night in silence until bed time.
Dean woke Liam when it was time to start getting ready to go to the church. Liam groaned and got himself up. Sam and Dean put on their FBI suits while Liam just dressed in his black dress pants and black long sleeved shirt. Once they were all ready they headed out to the car and drove to the church. There were quite a few people there. Seeing Alice laid out in a casket like that made tears stream down Liam’s cheeks again as it tore the wound open fresh. They sat in back and listened to the service. A few people said very nice things about Alice.
When it was over Missy was walking toward the door to go to the cemetery with her husband when she spotted Liam and headed over to them. “Hey, the cars are already lined up to go, so why don’t you guys ride with us?”
“Who are these guys again?” George asked.
“Liam here is a family friend that was pretty close with Gran,” she explained simply. “These other guys are friends of his.”
George extended his hand and Dean reached to shake it. “Yeah, we’re here mostly for moral support. We only met Alice the once that day in the nursing home, but she seemed like a great lady. We’re really sorry for your loss.”
“Thanks,” Missy gave them a small smile. “Now, let’s go. We’re lead car.”
The three men followed them out and they all squeezed into a tan car with Missy driving. “So, what do you guys do?” George asked when the procession started moving.
“We travel selling insurance,” Dean answered quickly. “That’s how we met Liam here, on the job. He only started working with us a little over three weeks ago, only days after the last time we met. He’s been a good friend though. When you pretty much live together in motel rooms twenty four-seven you build a relationship fast.”
“What kind of insurance do you sell?”
Dean shrugged. “What kind do you need?”
“George, quit badgering them about their work,” Missy yelled at him.
They sat in silence the rest of the way to the cemetery. Everyone parked in a line and they got out. The casket was moved over to where a fresh grave was already dug and a contraption with four heavy duty looking straps was over it to lower to the casket down. Alice was put on the contraption and everyone who came out gathered around the grave. The pastor spent about another five minutes talking about Alice and scripture before the casket started lowering down. Everyone stood to go back their cars. Liam paused to stand by the grave. “Goodbye, my sweet girl,” he said with a trembling lip before getting back in the car himself.
“Lunch is being served in the church social hall,” Missy said as she got back on the road. “Are you guys staying for that?”
“We probably shouldn’t,” Liam shook his head. He was the family friend that was kept secret because of what he was. He needed to attend the funeral, but the less exposure to other people the better in his mind.
“You sure?” Dean asked, taking his hand and giving it a squeeze. “If you’re worried about our assignment in San Francisco, don’t be. The boss said it can wait until tomorrow if you need the day. You come first.”
“Yeah, come eat with us,” Missy urged. “I haven’t really gotten to see you in like forever.”
“Okay,” Liam sighed. “We’ll stay and eat.”
They pulled back into the church parking lot and the men followed Missy into the social hall beside it. It was a huge wide open rectangular room with white walls and a wooden floor. White tables with place settings and chairs dotted the place. In the back left corner was a big rectangular window cut into the wall where the kitchen was. In the window was a line of metal hot food containers waiting for people to help themselves buffet style.
“Let’s sit over here,” Missy indicated a table in the middle of the room. They each grabbed a plate off the table and headed over to stand in the forming line by the food. Liam still wasn’t feeling very hungry, but after what happened the day before he knew he needed to eat, so he grabbed two thick slices of ham and two big spoonfuls of buttered noodles. Then he went over to the little table with the drink containers and poured himself a glass of what looked and smelled like fruit punch.
Dean gave him a little nod of approval when they sat down, glad he had something on his plate at least. Missy couldn’t help but stare a little while Liam took a few bites of ham. “What?” he asked when he caught her.
“Nothing, I just can’t believe you really did it.”
“Did what?” George asked.
“He lost weight, sweetie,” Missy answered quickly. “Yeah, when we were kids he was a bit of a porker. But hey, now look at you. You’re gorgeous and you look like you’re doing well.”
“Thanks,” Liam gave her a little smile. “Yeah, I’m okay. Your Gran dying really threw me for a loop, but I’ve got a good support system,” he patted Dean’s shoulder.
While they ate people kept coming over to Missy to offer their condolences. An older woman with brown hair that had big streaks of gray that was tied back in a bun came over and hugged Missy. “How are you doing, honey?”
“I’m okay, mom.”
The woman saw Liam and gave him a warm smile. “Liam, so good to see you again. I haven’t seen you since my Curtis’ funeral I don’t think.”
“Good to see you too, Emily,” he gave her a smile and a little nod.
Emily took one look at his mostly finished plate and her eyes widened a little. “And I see you finally found a solution to your little problem.”
“I did, a little while ago with the help of my two friends and co workers here. This is Dean, and that’s Sam.”
“Hi, it’s a pleasure to meet you,” Sam smiled. “I wish it were under better circumstances.”
“Yeah,” Emily sighed. “I was a very lucky woman, I actually really liked my mother in law. She was a strange woman, but very sweet. She welcomed me right into the family. I’m gonna miss her.”
Dean noticed two men carrying trays full of slices of pie over to a little table at the end of the room by a large window. “Ooh, they got pie! Be right back.” He got up and headed over to the table to grab himself a piece, and decided to bring one back for Liam too. “Here you go, babe,” he set a piece of blueberry pie down in front of the blond. “Comfort food.”
“I don’t want it,” Liam sighed.
“Eat it anyway. Pie always makes me feel better.”
“Wait a minute, did he just call you babe?” George asked with a raised eyebrow. “I thought you guys were co workers.”
“Yeah, well...” Liam blushed a little.
“Sometimes when you live together the lines between the professional and personal blur a little.” Dean explained with a shrug. “So yeah, not only do Liam and I work together, but we’re a couple.”
George seemed to accept that and Liam started picking at the pie. When Dean finished his piece Liam put his fork down. “Okay, it was really good seeing you all again, but we really should get going. We need to be in San Francisco for our job, and I’ve held us up long enough.”
“You’re sure you’re ready to go?” Dean asked, wiping his mouth with a napkin.
“I’m sure,” Liam nodded.
“Well, it was good to see you,” Missy said as they got up from the table.
“You too,” Liam patted her shoulder. “You have my number. Call me if you need anything.”
With that they headed back to the motel to change into more comfortable clothes and gather their things. “Nervous about your first case as a human?” Dean asked as he grabbed his bag and started carrying it out to the car.
“Yeah, a little,” Liam admitted as he grabbed his own packed bag. “But werewolves are pretty straight forward. You figure out who it is and shoot them in the heart with a silver bullet.”
“Yeah, but I want you to mostly observe for now. Do what Sam or I tell you, and only what we tell you, understood? It’s for your own safety.”
“Understood,” Liam nodded as he climbed into the back and got himself settled.
“Good.” Dean climbed into the driver’s seat and fired up the engine. “San Francisco, here we come.”
